Gas Technology Institute and China Energy Research Society Host "Global Unconventional Gas 2011"

AUGUST 18, 2011/LONDON, UK - Unconventional gas resources are generating interest around the world, ushering in what some are calling the golden age of gas. History has shown that collaboration and adaptations of technology hold the key to unlocking the potential of gas shale, tight gas sand, and coal-bed methane. This collaboration enables solutions to be identified, developed, and deployed that reduce the risks and costs of production and minimize the environmental footprint of developing these vital resources.

To support the dissemination of technical experience in support of this collaboration, GTI and the China Energy Research Society have partnered with event organizer DMG Events to host the 2nd Annual Global Unconventional Gas 2011 Conference in Beijing, China. The event will run from September 13 through 15 and will take place at the JW Marriott, Beijing. The event has the support of the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA), the International Gas Union (IGU), and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The first day of the event (September 13) will focus on what the development of unconventional resources in China and elsewhere around the globe makes possible and what will be required to enable this success. Top thought leaders and operators from China and the international energy community will provide their perspectives. Highlights of the first day will include a panel of senior officials moderated by the China Energy Research Society sharing what they see as the opportunities and an afternoon keynote presentation on the subject of "China Unconventional Gas Challenges and Opportunities" to by delivered by Dr. Michael Economides, currently Editor-in-Chief of the Energy Tribune.

The second day of the event (September 14) will delve into the cutting edge applications of technology that enable unconventional gas resource development. GTI has assembled a world class mix of experts to address next generation R&D challenges, best practices, and potential solutions. Technical sessions will provide context on technology developments to date and the future of unconventional gas technology in China, the latest thinking on the resource potential of shale gas and coal-bed methane in China, a panel discussion of key world leading service companies and water technology providers sharing their perspectives on the latest developments, and GTI's perspectives on a model for collaboration for technology development as well as new natural gas utilization technologies that put new supplies to best use. Speakers will include Vello Kuuskraa of Advanced Resources International and lead contributor to the recent report on global unconventional gas potential released by the U.S. Energy Information Agency, Porter Bennett of Bentek Energy, Dr. Zhang Jinchuan of China University of Geosciences Beijing, and experts from the China National Center of Coal Bed Methane, the China United Coalbed Methane Corporation, Shell Global Solutions, Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, and key water technology companies.

The post-conference technical workshop (September 15) will go even deeper into an exploration of key technologies. This rich program offers insights on the latest techniques being used to get the most out of hydraulic fracturing, production optimization, and well design along with a session designed to separate fact from fiction associated with produced water handling and treatment options. Featured speakers include Dr. Julia Gale of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas and Ernie Brown from Schlumberger who is a Distinguished SPE Lecturer. They will be joined by speakers from Optimization Petroleum Technologies, Baker Hughes, GTI, AECOM, and 212 Resources.
