New Holland Ship Yard Ltd are an established, environmentally licenced and certified shipbreakers based at the New Holland site on the south bank of the river Humber. Our 5 Acre site has a working and storage capacity of 5000 tons permitted by the environment agency of salvaged material. The site is in the process of upgrading to two new quays with hardstanding to accommodate 300×90 foot barges opening up the possibility for North Sea decom projects on one quay and ship decommissioning on the other.

Decommissioning
A decommission program identifies all the items of equipment, infrastructure and materials that have been installed on a vessel.

An inventory of hazardous materials (HM) is taken and this not only states which hazardous materials are present on board a ship but also which quantities and their specific properties. Tests are performed to establish the presence of any Asbestos, BCB Mercury Components.

If the ship still has ballast water on arrival this also is tested. Once all of the information has been gathered it is sent to the environment agency with our RAMS (risk assessment & method statements). We then must wait on the environment agency for approval before we can commence decommissioning and breaking of the vessel. All Hazardous material is removed prior to any demolition and is disposed of in the manor that is safe for the environment and human health. Control measures based on our RAMS are in place during the entire decommissioning process to protect our personnel, public and the environment.

It is important to note that we will also need approval from the Environment Agency prior to accepting any vessel into the New Holland Shipyard and we will help you in getting that approval.

Ship Breaking
Once a vessel has been decommissioned and made environmentally safe, we then start the breaking process. We do this by traditional ship breaking methods but also employ the use of a high-performance excavator and  mounted hydraulic shears – which massively speeds up the process. All materials are then recycled or disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

Salvage
During the decommissioning and dismantling process of any vessel we will often remove parts or salvage that can be reused on other vessels as replacement parts. These can include engines, propellers, electrical equipment, controls, navigational equipment,  lights, doors, portholes and many other items.
