Horizontal recovery
People who have been in the water, the injured and the incapable, should be lifted in a horizontal or near-horizontal position if possible. (IMO Guide To Recovery Techniques, MSC.1/Circ.1182/Rev.1)

Whenever possible, a horizontal recovery position should be undertaken, upon recovery of a casualty. Vertical lifting causes immediate loss of the G suit effect. The already reduced blood volume instantly pools in the lower body and the heart rate cannot increase to compensate for this sudden loss of central blood volume.

As a result, circulatory shock and sudden death can occur. This is called circum–rescue collapse and is a recognized major hazard of vertical lifting when recovering someone who is hypothermic. A horizontal position with a full body support will limit the possibility of shock and worsening of injuries are reduced.

Power- assisted method of recovery
A power- assisted method of recovery by use of a Dacon Scoop will retrieve a person in a horizontal position with full body support to avoid further injury or shock, which is a very important factor to emphasize. The crane operated rescue system requires no interaction from the casualty. Hence, the system is fully capable of rescuing severely injured or even unconscious persons.
