Southbay Civil Engineering Limited to upgrade existing fish quay on North East Coast of England

Southbay Civil Engineering Limited are currently responsible for the refurbishment of the Protection Jetty at North Shields Fish Quay, located on the North East Coast of England.
This marine design and build contract involves the complete refurbishment of the structure, with site works including the installation of bearing piles to support a new deck system.
Due to the reduced load capacity of the existing jetty, temporary works in the form steel grillage is being used to install the new bearing piles through the existing deck. The existing bearing piles have been incorporated as part of the temporary works arrangement.
Outside of this, further works will include the replacement of fendering, the installation of a new king pile wave wall, the replacement of existing services, and the installation of new cladding panels to an existing canopy structure. The new quay design has been developed to utilise the existing structure as formwork throughout the construction process, mitigating against the need for extensive temporary works.
The project involves progressing works within a limited site footprint, with the jetty subject to daily vessel movements associated with the busy fish market.
The fish quay, which dates back to the 13th century, is the main fishing port on the River Tyne and is the biggest producer of prawn in England. The project will help to secure the future of the fish quay by providing improved berthing facilities and attracting larger size fishing vessels.
This is the second such project delivered by Southbay on behalf of the North Shields Fish Quay company, following the award winning upgrade of the Western Quay.
