Workboat Training – Apprenticeship Opportunities in Whitby

Monday, 4th March 2024

Whitby has a wealth of maritime history going back hundreds of years, including connections with the whaling, cargo, and fishing industries.

54 North Maritime Training was established in 2014 with the aim of delivering quality safety training to new entrants to the workboat industry, as well as further enhancing the skills of existing seafarers.

54 North Maritime Training continues to be a centre of excellence within the workboat industry, providing essential safety training to any person wishing to start a career at sea.

Level 3 Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember Apprenticeship

The company is a member of the Workboat Association and is very proud to be successfully delivering the newly accredited Level 3 Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember apprenticeship to the workboat industry. The program is very comprehensive and serves as an excellent introduction to any person wishing to strive for a career in the maritime industry.  New entrants are recruited from a wide geographical area to study at our dedicated training facility in Whitby, North Yorkshire.

This 2-year apprenticeship course is made up of a mixture of both academic and practical hands-on learning.  Each apprentice is employed by a workboat company and sent to Whitby for the classroom phase of their training.

The apprentices will then return to their respective workboat companies to undergo practical training on vessels such as tugboats, crew transfer vessels and multipurpose workboats.

Apprentices under the instruction of the Master of the vessel will fulfil mission-specific tasks, by using specialist equipment and machinery onboard the vessel, such as handling cargo, slinging of loads, crane operations and securing cargo on board.

Many employers are based around the coastal ports of the UK or by rivers and canals.

They range from large organisations like the Royal Navy, to smaller private operators offering specialist services. There are currently opportunities available to join the Level 3 Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember apprenticeship.

This program offers a wide range of career opportunities in various specialist vessels, both commercial and military, including tugs, multipurpose workboats, aquaculture, and fast pilot boats, as well as crew transfer vessels that transport personnel to offshore installations or vessels.

If you are a workboat company or a potential learner interested in this workboat training apprenticeship program, please do not hesitate to contact 54 North Maritime Training via email: info@54northmaritime.co.uk or telephone: 01947 602098 for further information and a detailed explanation of the course.

We look forward to hearing from you and helping you embark on an exciting career in the maritime industry.
