Siemens Energy Selects EST-Floattech for CSOV Battery System

Thursday, 15th October 2026

EST-Floattech has been selected by Siemens Energy to supply a battery system for Marco Polo Marine’s new Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) Plus, currently under construction in Batam, Indonesia.

The contract covers the delivery of EST-Floattech’s Octopus High Energy (HE) battery modules, with a capacity exceeding 1 MWh. The system will support the vessel’s hybrid power plant and dynamic positioning (DP) operations, with Siemens Energy acting as the system integrator.

The project marks EST-Floattech’s first in Singapore and Taiwan, extending the company’s presence in the Asian maritime electrification market.

CSOV Plus Designed for Offshore Wind and Oil & Gas

Designed by Norway’s Salt Ship Design, the CSOV Plus is the first vessel of its type developed from the outset to serve both the offshore wind and oil and gas sectors.

The vessel combines a 100-tonne active heave-compensated crane with a motion-compensated gangway, enabling walk-to-work personnel transfers in significant wave heights of up to 3.0 metres. Its hull and propulsion configuration are optimised for station-keeping operations.

Construction began at Marco Polo Marine’s Batam shipyard in the second quarter of 2026, with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.

Octopus High Energy Supports Hybrid Power and DP

The Octopus High Energy battery system will operate alongside the vessel’s generator sets and Siemens Energy’s BlueDrive PlusC propulsion and power system.

During dynamic positioning operations, the batteries will provide spinning reserve and absorb variations in power demand. This will reduce the number of generators required to operate while helping those in service run closer to their optimum load, supporting improved operational efficiency.

EST-Floattech’s experience in maritime electrification, with battery systems operating at sea for more than ten years, was a key factor in its selection. The Octopus High Energy system was chosen for its suitability for the CSOV Plus’s operational requirements and its potential to accommodate future expansion.

Battery System Prepared for Future Electric Sailing

Sustainability has been incorporated into the CSOV Plus design from the outset. The vessel has been configured to allow its battery capacity to be expanded to a 20 MWh package, potentially enabling fully electric sailing.

The modular architecture of the Octopus Series supports this future upgrade. Additional battery modules can be integrated with the existing battery management system within the space reserved during the vessel’s design, providing a scalable solution as operational requirements evolve.

CSOV Plus to Support Taiwan’s Offshore Wind Industry

Following delivery, the CSOV Plus will be operated by PKR Offshore (PKRO), Marco Polo Marine’s Taiwan-based subsidiary, which provides offshore vessels to support the region’s offshore wind industry.

The vessel will be deployed for Siemens Gamesa under a multi-year framework agreement covering offshore wind projects in Taiwanese waters.

It will join PKRO’s existing fleet, which includes the MP Wind Archer, the company’s first CSOV, which entered service in Taiwan in 2025.
