Rotec Ensures Operational Readiness for Cruise Vessel

Leading fluid power and engineering specialist Rotec Hydraulics has successfully completed a critical Electro-Mechanical Maintenance project on a luxury cruise ship during its recent dry-docking at Falmouth.
The project centred on essential overhauls of the vessel’s main engine combustion, supply, and exhaust fan units—a key requirement for optimal engine efficiency and regulatory compliance.
The contract, which followed Rotec’s successful work on the sister ship the previous year, underscores the company’s growing reputation for delivering robust, high-standard electromechanical services, alongside Hydraulic expertise, within the demanding marine environment.
Key objectives executed by the Rotec team included:
– Comprehensive inspection, pre-recording, and safe disconnection of electrical and mechanical units.
– Precise extraction of old bearings and fitting of Rotec-supplied replacements.
– Rigorous post-disconnection insulation testing and reporting of findings.
– Thorough reassembly, reconnection, and final operational testing to the satisfaction of ship staff.
The project’s success hinged on Rotec’s ability to handle unforeseen complications. During disassembly, the engineering team proactively identified several critical faults that could have led to in-service failure:
1. A cracked mounting bracket was found on a supply fan, requiring immediate on-site welding repair.
2. A significant crack was discovered on the lug of the Non-Destructive Examination (N.D.E) endshield, necessitating the swift sourcing, adaptation, and fitting of a replacement part.
3. Both vibration sensors for the bearings were damaged, requiring the urgent sourcing and installation of new components.
Despite these emergent works, Rotec’s highly skilled engineers demonstrated exceptional problem-solving and rapid adaptability, ensuring the work remained on schedule. Each fan unit was meticulously reassembled with new, high-quality bearings. A rigorous insulation test confirmed electrical integrity, and the unit was run up to the complete satisfaction of the vessel’s engineering team.
The client’s Assistant Electrical Manager praised the on-site team, stating:
