Another Damen ASD 2913 for Rimorchiatori Riuniti

Rimorchiatori Riuniti has taken delivery of a Damen ASD 2913. The new vessel – named Germania – was handed over to the Italian tug operator last week from Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania. The delivery follows Rimorchiatori Riuniti’s order for a second, identical vessel; the contract for which was also finalised at the end of December.

Rimorchiatori Riuniti’s newest addition to the fleet has had some additional extras installed by Damen. "These include FiFi 1, oil recovery and escort notations as well as an aft winch meaning that she will be capable of some offshore duties too," says Damen Regional Sales Manager Andrea Trevisan. "The Germania has also been built to be fully compliant with Italian Flag requirements."

Twin sisters
The Germania – a powerful 80-tonne bollard pull tug – will be put into action in the port of Genoa. As Italy’s largest seaport, Genoa is also the country’s busiest in terms of cargo tonnage. The port also handles a substantial amount of passenger transport in the form of ferries and cruise ships.

The delivery of the Germania follows hot on the heels of the contract signing of a second ASD 2913. This tug will also be built at Damen Shipyards Galati and, using the same design and additional equipment as the Germania, will be a true sister vessel.

Smart customisation
During the construction of the Germania, Rimorchiatori Riuniti had an inspector at the yard for several months: "We are pleased that they are happy with the quality of work that we have delivered. Therefore, we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to build an additional vessel for this respected client," said Mr Trevisan.

The second ASD 2913 is due for delivery in just four months. Damen will accomplish this swift turnaround by outfitting a built-for-stock vessel. "A mid-May delivery is very fast, but using our ‘smart customisation’, we will manage this challenge," continues Mr Trevisan. "The trust that Rimorchiatori Riuniti Group has in Damen demonstrates the excellent spirit of cooperation between the two companies."

In addition the unit is scalable – so energy storage can be built up with units in parallel. This allows larger vessels to take advantage of lithium batteries as part of a larger hybrid system.

DLM Design successfully undergo a range test over 3.13km

DLM Design carry out a range test on a new custom design transmitter and receiver display, designed specifically to reach a clients exact requirements of 3km range across a body of water.

A prominent cable laying company recently contacted DLM Design to come up with a solution for a cable pulling operation that measures load on a sheave block on the beach, then wirelessly communicating to a cable laying vessel up to 3km offshore in order to monitor the load on the sheave at the vessels deck.

DLM Design took on the challenge and headed to Southampton waters last week to test the equipment. With the transmitter box at Hamble Spit and receiver at Calshot, the test was carried out on a misty January morning across a distance measuring 3.13kM. The test was performed several times and pleased to report that it successfully exceeded the distance required.

NRG Appoints VETUS as Sonihull Distributor

UK-based ultrasonic antifouling specialist NRG Marine has just announced two new distributors for its Sonihull range of marine antifouling products.

Piraeus-based VETUS Hellas will be responsible for sales and distribution of NRG’s range in Greece and WorkShip based in Rio have been appointed as the first dealer in South America to represent the Sonihull brand in Brazil.

The new distributors join 14 other partners around the globe who are transforming the way that commercial, military and leisure craft are dealing with marine fouling issues.

Since 2006, NRG’s ground-breaking Sonihull transducer has grown into a complete range of fit-and-forget ultrasound devices for any solid surface that is exposed to marine fouling. Sonihull now protects everything from hulls, shafts, propellers and jet-drives to sea-chests, tanks, box-coolers and pipework; keeping weeds, barnacles and mussels away season-after-season without using any hazardous chemicals, cathodes or paints, with no lift-outs, scraping or high-pressure cleaning.

How it works: All Sonihull systems produce multiple pulses of ultrasonic energy in a range of targeted ultrasonic frequencies. These pulses are transmitted through the material that the transducer is attached to; the hull, prop-shaft, pipework, jet drive, sea chest, box cooler, tank etc…

The pulses produce a pattern of alternating positive and negative pressure on the surface of the material. Microscopic bubbles are created during the negative pressure cycle and are imploded during the positive pressure cycle.

This microscopic surface agitation has a cleansing effect that destroys algae, the first link in the marine food chain. This keeps the surface clean and makes it a much less inviting habitat for larger organisms that feed on the algae. The microscopic movement of water also prevents barnacle and mussel larvae from embedding on the surface.

Famous Bridge Refurbishment uses DLM Load Cell

Hampshire Rigging Services used a DLM load cell to measure tension on a historical suspension bridge wire rope during refurbishment in Thames Ditton last month.

Hampshire Rigging who regularly use DLM Load cells due to their great customer service and rapid response on hire items contacted the firm in need of a 12t telemetry tensile link in order to measure the tension on the steel wire rope of an old bridge in Thames Ditton, Hampshire.

The beautiful 1939 suspension bridge located on the River Thames, leads across to an inhabited island in the middle of the river adjacent to Hampton Court Palace where Henry VIII once lived. The once wooden bridge first opened in 1753 and had a toll collected by a bridge-keeper. It has since been replaced three times to the existing suspension bridge we see today. Due to general wear of the bridge it was decided that the wire ropes would be replaced and the bridge would be refurbished. One of DLM’s TL-2.0 12t Telemetry Tensile Links will be rigged in line at the base of the bridge and will be used to measure the applied tension during replacement of the wire rope. The load values can be seen on a wireless hand held display up to 200m from the load cell allowing the operator to be mobile while still monitoring tension.
