Global supplier of marine distress signals, WesCom Signal and Rescue confirms it will be exhibiting this year at Nor-Shipping, the bi-annual event which attracts key decision makers in maritime industries from across the world.

In support of its many distributors and partners around the world, WesCom Signal and Rescue has been developing a range of bespoke programmes to enhance training facilities. SMS Wins Big in Cruise â€“ New Market, New Opportunites

The SMS Group, one of the UK’s leading ship repairers and marine engineering services providers, has entered the buoyant cruise market with a bang.

SMS has an enviable reputation as specialists in ship repair, marine engineering and major fabrication projects in the Commercial Marine, Defence and Superyachts sectors. The company also operates, in-house, a Cruise and Ferry centric interior and exterior outfit business.
The interior team, headed by Dan Lockyer, has a tremendous amount of experience with regards to outfitting both conventional and high-speed ferries, superyachts and cruise ships.

This latest win comes from Holland America Line. The scope of works is to supply and fit decorative joinery frames to house new, large, TV screens to 576 passenger cabins and 166 suites. This also includes the additional joinery panels to be added to the bulkheads.
Twenty skilled SMS operatives will carry out the works over a 14-day refit period in Victoria, Canada, in Q3 of this year.

SMS have 10 weeks to procure, manufacture, assemble and then ship the goods. Whilst the program is tight the SMS approved supply chain is both geared up and experienced enough to ensure on-budget and on-time delivery.

Wardle Marine Services are proud to supply Ultrasonic transducers for bodies of water, of any size, that require the removal of algae and bacterial pathogens for aesthetic or other purposes.

Years of research and product development have gone into creating this reliable system that can be used singularly or as multiple units depending on the size of body of water that needs treating. The transducers have successfully treated algae growth in ponds, lakes, irrigation tanks, water tanks, reservoirs, swimming pools, marinas, cooling towers and many other aquatic areas. The units come in three sizes:

ESI-50-1T – 50m range (0.4 hectares)
ESI- 150-1T – 150m range (3.5 hectares)
ESI-300-1T – 300m range (14 hectares)

Padstow Boatyard release new PB40 fishing boat from the mould

Padstow Boatyard, one of the UK’s leading GRP commercial fishing boat builders, has just released its new 12m commercial fishing boat hull from the mould, the PB40. The heavy displacement PB40 model was designed by internationally renowned naval architect Gary Mitchell in conjunction with Pelagic Design to enable maximum stability in rough seas, large capacity to store catch and fuel-efficient design.

Built for a customer based in the North West of England, the boat will be setup as a crabbing vessel and should be added to the UK fishing fleet once the fitout stage has taken place and full sea trials completed.

Padstow Boatyard Owner Will Claxton stated, “We are delighted with how the build has progressed, now that the hull is out of the mould and customers can see the kind of vessels we are building, we are sure the demand for this range of boats will continue”.
The company currently boasts a range of commercial fishing boat designs from 8.5m Norwegian style inshore fishing boats to 15m crabbers and trawlers all built to Seafish construction standards.

He added, “Feedback from customers has been very positive, we have been in the process of gearing up the yard to increase build capacity as well as promoting our new designs and with Brexit uncertainty sure to end at some stage everything is heading in the right direction”.

The Maritime Community Meet at Digital Ship Forums

Earlier this month Digital Ship brought together the maritime community in Athens at the Maritime Cyber Resilience Forum to provide perspective about where the real cyber security threats are in the maritime industry and what to do about them. With more than 100 shipping company personnel in attendance, the day was filled with engaging discussions and offered interesting networking opportunities.

Each session of the agenda was followed by a panel discussion, predominately attended by IT managers. The broad subjects discussed ranged from security framework design, raising awareness on cyber security, the security of the vessel, and maximizing input from technology companies.

After the event Dimitris Lyras, Managing Director at Ulysses Systems, who moderated two panels commented: "We realized that security is not just firewalls and converting your network into a cyber lobster that does not allow you to do business." He continued: "We came to the conclusion that a cybersecurity ecosystem is needed where vendors develop software that understands and reports illicit use and access as well as the traditional cyber security good practices."

"I believe that leaving an office for a day to come to the conference was useful to make necessary contacts and potentially solve some of the work challenges with experience exchange among peers" said conference producer Vaida Stockunaite.

This was preceded by the hugely successful Digital Ship – Vessel Performance Optimisation Forum, Cyprus in March with over 120 maritime professionals listening, learning and networking on the day.

SMS Group brings a new shipyard to its customer base in the Solent

The SMS Group, one of the country’s leading ship repairers and marine engineering services providers, has partnered with the Hythe Shipyard to provide a dedicated shipyard solution to customers within the Solent and Southampton Water.

SMS has an enviable reputation as specialists in ship repair, marine engineering and major fabrication projects in the Commercial Marine, Defence and Superyachts sectors.

The business also operates, in-house, a diving and sub-surface marine engineering division.

The Hythe Shipyard is located just South of Marchwood at the top of Southampton Water.

The facility, owned by Fairline, allows vessels up to 950T (with a 55m LOA and 11.5m beam) to be slipped and hauled ashore.

The site also offers moorings for vessels from 10m to 100m LOA.

There is 10,000 sqm of undercover space and 24/7 onsite security.

The yard is an ‘open’ facility ensuring that SMS can bring its full suite of trades to site, including, but not limited to, structural and mechanical repair teams, electrical and hydraulic engineers, painting and coatings experts and interior and exterior outfitters.

Wight Shipyard Co hybrid patrol vessel – Clean and low cost

UK shipbuilder Wight Shipyard Co (WSC)’s newbuild hybrid vessel promises to set new industry standards in the patrol and pilot sectors helping operators including port and river authorities, Police, MOD and Royal Navy meet strict new pollution standards.

The port environment is becoming an even more strict environment to work in when it comes to environmental regulation and clean air requirements. Port authorities, harbour and river patrols now require a vessel that can operate and switch easily between variable speeds; operating at low speed when environmental consideration is needed in heavily polluted areas and high speed when required.

WSC’s new hybrid vessel also provides operators with a reduction in both fuel costs and engine maintenance because there is the ability to turn off the main engines for substantial periods of time.

“This ground-breaking project aims to set new standards in high speed, fuel economy and lightweight vessels in the sector. Building greener vessels has been an integral focus for some time now so moving into hybrid options is the obvious next step forward,” said Peter Morton, CEO, WSC.

Design
The WSC vessel has been designed by naval architect Chartwell Marine, and is the first in the new Chasewellrange of pilot and patrol boats, first unveiled at Seawork 2018.

It has been designed and built in collaboration with Andy Page, naval architect and managing director of Chartwell Marine. The aim behind the design is to substantially improve air quality at major ports in the UK and further afield and help operators meet emissions reduction goals.

Mr Page said the vessel has a unique hybrid system architecture and an innovative new hull form that minimises drag and resistance throughout the speed range. He said that the hull form results from extensive research undertaken by the team at Chartwell Marine into low speed resistance enabling efficient performance under both diesel and electrical propulsion.

“Ultimately this hull form, optimised through extensive computational flow dynamics (CFD) testing, allows the operator to maximise time spent on electrical power, with substantial advantages when it comes to reducing total emissions,” he said.
“With one of the first hybrids in build, Chartwell Marine and Wight Shipyard Co. are leading in the development of alternative propulsion and putting a significant amount of R&D work into practice.”

He pointed out that WSC was brought into the project because of its strong reputation.
“WSC brings superior build quality and workmanship and a specific focus on weight reduction and fuel efficiency. This has a natural lead in to the growing hybrid requirement. Importantly, it also delivers all of its projects on time.”

Power
Marine and Industrial Transmissions Limited (MIT) and its manufacturing and technology partner Transfluid, are providing the hybrid system for the vessel. MIT’s tried and tested system was selected to form part of the Chasewell power train, plus an integrator that had the technical expertise to do the job.

The Transfluid HM560 marine hybrid unit used in the drive configuration delivers ratings of up to 164kW diesel power and 20kW electric power. Using rechargeable batteries and an integral battery management system, the unit actively manages power output and charge rate depending on the battery status and condition.

Meanwhile, the control system allows users to easily switch between operating modes. The intelligent software can integrate with other on-board systems for extended control and diagnostics.

Seawork
The new vessel will be on show at Seawork this year Wight Shipyard Co berth VB02 and stand PG146 and the hybrid technology will be on display on the MIT stand PO5.

Inaddition, Andy Page from Chartwell Marine will be addressing the audience at the exhibition with a talk at the concurrent Seawork Hybrid Conference.
He is chairing a panel titled: "The case for Hybrid Pilot boats – economic, environmental, & operational".

Strength to strength
WSC is known for its environmentally-friendly builds in the ferry sector including Red Funnel’s Red Jet 6 and two MBNA Thames Clippers.

The yard has also delivered a commuter and sightseeing vessel for the River Danube – its first multi-million-pound export order for a 250-passenger river ferry.

Seawork â€“ the place to do business now and for the future

Seawork 2019, Europe’s largest commercial marine and workboat exhibition opens next month in Southampton UK.

22nd year of industry developments, projects, contracts and partnerships

Seawork, now in its 22nd year, is Europe’s largest commercial marine and workboat exhibition and conference, attracts over 7700 high-calibre marine professionals and provides direct access to the industry’s vessels, equipment and services, innovations and people.

Engineering exhibition colocates

This year Seawork is joined by the Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering Expo (M&CCE), Europe’s leading event dedicated to showcasing the latest equipment and solutions for marine, coastal and other challenging civil engineering projects with unique landscape features. Situated exclusively within its own exhibition arena M&CCE Expo will run alongside the three days of Seawork.

Sea trials and shock mitigation

Fast vessels operating at high speed for security interventions and Search and Rescue (SAR) are a significant specialist sector of the commercial marine business. Seawork’s sister event, Speed@Seawork 2019 is a crucial networking event supported by UK MOD, looking at state of the art developments in shock mitigation, vessel monitoring, navigation, radio and intercom combiners, deck, training and lifesaving equipment. Day one Monday 10 June sees 15 vessels and associated new technology from the USA, Germany, France, Finland, Holland and the UK set to sea trial in the variable waters of The Solent, followed by a half-day conference at Seawork on Tuesday 11 June.

Seawork itself sees more than 70 vessels and floating plant on display and afloat for trial. Demonstrations will take place throughout the exhibition in the specially constructed Seawork marina, built especially for the event.

Looking to the future

Significant developments in Unmanned Surface Vessels and Hybrid Propulsion make ‘The Future of Hybrid Propulsion’ and ‘The Commercial Use of USVs‘ this year’s Seawork Commercial Marine Conference sessions on Wednesday 12 June. USVs can be used across a wide range of applications from bridge and dam monitoring, augmenting or replacing divers in salvage, port security, fish farms, surveillance to research and education. The USV market is expected to reach around $US1billion by 2022.

Marine hybrid propulsion systems are yet another fast-emerging market, estimated to reach around USD 5,252 million by 2024. Seawork 2018 saw delegates agree that hybrid is no longer a concept, it is a reality. At the same time the order for the UK’s first hybrid pilot boat was placed; attendees will see the vessel itself at Seawork this year.

Unique service for exhibitors and industry visitors

Made possible by the valued participation of representatives from DIT, UK MoD and The Royal Navy, Seawork offers a unique service to support business in the military and public sectors. Exhibitors can access one-to-one sessions with representatives from the Department for International Trade; offering valuable information on support for trade and business overseas.

Supporting blue by going green

Seawork is committed to delivering an environmentally friendly and sustainable exhibition and has partnered with the Big Blue Ocean Cleanup, an international organisation that envisages healthy oceans and marine biodiversity.

Encouraging exhibitors to be a part of this initiative and help reduce the exhibition’s footprint, Seawork will also be introducing steps to aid the global drive towards cleaner and healthier oceans. by banning all single use plastics on-site, such as plastic straws and bottles. Don Quixote recycled and repurposed to create the 23m CTV, Iceni Revenge, ready for Seawork 2019

Turner Iceni will be exhibiting the newly recycled and repurposed Iceni Revenge at Seawork. Based on the Don Quixote, a 20m South Boat, purchased by Turner Iceni in January this year from Vroon, Iceni Revenge has been lengthened to 23m and now incorporates 20,000 litres of fuel storage.

Iceni Revenge has been re-engined with twin MAN V12-1400 main engines and Hamilton HM651 jets, incorporating a new AVX control system and jet anchor. Iceni Revenge is capable of sprint speeds of 30 knots and a continuous operational speed in excess of 25 knots at 85% engine load.

To enable refueling operations, the donor- vessel has been lengthened to 23m, enabling a total fuel capacity of 20,000 litres, together with 30,000 kg of cargo capacity split between a bow deck of 24m2 and an aft deck of 63m2,

The interior has been completely refreshed with a re-designed galley and updated passenger saloon, featuring 12 x High Speed Code Annex 10 seats. The updated bridge features a JRC JMA5210-6 IMO main radar system with a Furano TZ Pro second radar, together with seating for up to three crew.

Richard Thurlow, Director at Turner Iceni: "Taking an asset that has seen better days, then recycling and repurposing it for today’s market is, we believe, a first for the industry – one we have achieved together with Diverse Marine on the Isle of Wight. Iceni Revenge now offers substantial fuel capacity, cargo capacity and a very comfortable environment for passengers, whilst also reducing Turner Iceni’s capital expenditure and carbon footprint. We can’t wait to welcome visitors on board at Seawork 2019.”

Ben Colman, Director at Diverse Marine: “With many of the staff and directors having been involved in the development and build of the donor vessel, Diverse Marine had extensive knowledge to offer during the lengthening and refit. But in the space of just a few months we have re-engineered a crew transfer vessel that is now at the forefront of the industry, at a fraction of the cost of a new build.”

Iceni Revenge will be exhibited on the quay at Seawork 2019 at berth VB34 – with tours of the vessel available throughout the event.
