Damen launches cutting-edge Fishery Research Vessel for Angolan Fisheries Ministry

On 9th November, Damen Shipyards Galati launched a Fishery Research Vessel (FRV) 7417 for the Angolan Ministry of Fisheries. The sponsor of the vessel, named Baía Farta, was Dra. Isabel Cristóvão, director of Gabinete de Estudos, Planeamento e Estatística.

The Ministry is a long-standing client of Damen, having previously taken delivery of two 62-metre Fishery Inspection Vessels 6210 and a smaller FRV 2808. This new vessel boasts a number of state-of-the-art features.

The FRV has Silent A/F/R Class notation. Close attention is being paid to the design, construction and outfitting of the vessel in order to minimise noise and vibration both on board and underwater.

The FRV 7417 is suited to various purposes, including hydrographic operations, acoustics research, pelagic and demersal trawling, plankton, water, environmental and geographical sampling, oil recovery and emergency towing operations.

Friso Visser, Damen Regional Director Africa, said: “This vessel represents the future of fishery research, featuring cutting-edge technologies to make operations both sustainable and comfortable. She will enable the Angolan Fisheries Ministry to carry out research into its fishing grounds that will help to develop and preserve the nation’s industry and environment.”

Baía Farta features a basic design from Skipsteknisk. Her construction has been an international project, involving input from Damen Shipyards Gorinchem and Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in the Netherlands, with building taking place at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania.

Ekofish Group builds twin-rigger at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam

Dutch fishing company Ekofish Group has contracted Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam to build a new twin-rig fishing trawler. The design and on-board equipment of the new vessel will all be in line with Ekofish’s dedication to sustainable fishing methods.

Family-owned Ekofish Group has a history that goes back more than a century. The company’s working practices can be seen as a product of this rich fishing heritage and a truly sustainable way of thinking. An especially pertinent example of this was when Ekofish was the first European flatfish fishing company to receive MSC certification back in 2009.

Pushing for change
The design of the new vessel has been a collaboration between Ekofish, Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam and Vripack naval architects. “We got together in March 2017 to design the various design parameters,” comments Ekofish’s Louwe de Boer. “We wanted something innovative; in that respect we are not scared of change.”

With its 32-metre length and 9.6-metre beam, the design of the new vessel reflects this multi-disciplinary approach. “This has been a very enthusiastic cooperation – combining Damen’s know-how with our own fishing experience,” says Mr De Boer.

Innovative design
For Vripack – a company more well-known for its yacht design portfolio – the new vessel represents their first twin-rigger fishing vessel design. “We were invited to look at the creation for the trawler with a fresh pair of eyes; approaching the project from a non-conventional angle from our position of a holistic design and naval architecture studio,” says Ierring Faber, Naval Architect at Vripack.

“In the next phase of the project, the valuable input from Maaskant Shipyards made the design develop into a feasible fish trawler while still doing justice to the innovative concept design that we started off with.”

Efficient power supply
Taking on the requirements of returning customer Ekofish, the team at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam aimed to optimise the efficiency of the vessel’s systems wherever possible. Using the design of the power plant as an example, Eric Moerkerk, Manager Operations at the yard, explains: “The vessel will have diesel-electric propulsion, using three generators lined up to a DC-Bus. This will reduce the peak load demands that are characteristic of the operational profile of fishing vessels.”

In addition, the power plant will be supplemented by a battery pack. “The batteries can be used for short-term tasks at sea, and also while in harbour – removing the need to use the main engines. They can be charged in various ways; during periods of engine overcapacity or even capturing the energy created when the winches are paying out. These techniques are ground-breaking for the fisheries industry.”

Construction of the hull, taking place in Poland, is due to commence in Q1 2018. Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam will perform outfitting, aiming for completion in Q1 2019.

LK Valves & Controls Add New Winel Tank Vent Check Valve To Their Product Range

LK Valves & Controls Ltd, the Liverpool based stockist and distributor, has added the new Winel product to its extensive range.

Winel’s latest development, the new aluminum type ‘CM’ tank vent check valve is made of a seawater resistant lightweight aluminum alloy ALMG4.5. Available in sizes DN40 to DN450 this latest valve is a slim line small design, lightweight, with a high flow capacity. It has been tested and certified in accordance with the relevant requirements of the European Union Recognised Organisations Mutual Recognition procedure for Type Approval.

Winel have been producing tank vent check valves for over 50 years and they have Type Approvals from all major Classification Societies for their whole range of tank vent check valves.

Tank vent check valves or vent heads as they are more commonly known, are used on all ships in order to ventilate ballast and void tanks, while also preventing any contamination of the contents of the tank with water during rough seas. It is a requirement that all tanks aboard ships are protected from penetration of seawater in accordance with the International Convention on Load Lines 1966.

Damen acquires Daewoo’s shares in Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries

Damen Shipyards Group has entered into a share purchase agreement with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) for the acquisition of its majority share in Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries (DMHI).

The Daewoo shipyard in Mangalia, Romania was established in 1997 as a joint venture between Daewoo and 2 Mai Mangalia Shipyard with Daewoo as majority shareholder.

With the acquisition of the majority share in the shipyard in Mangalia, Damen takes the next step in strengthening its international shipbuilding and ship repair activities. The Mangalia shipyard is located on the Black Sea coast. The yard is spread over an area of 980,000m2, has three drydocks with a total length of 982 metres and 1.6 kilometres of berthing space. The docks, with a width of between 48 and 60 metres, will provide Damen with capacity to cater for the largest maritime vessels and structures. As such, this move represents a strategic complement to Damen’s current shipyard portfolio.

Damen already owns a shipyard in Romania, in Galati on the banks of the River Danube, currently the group’s largest shipyard. Since joining Damen in 1999, this yard has developed into a highly efficient production yard with a significant output of many hundreds of vessels and structures. The yard’s shipbuilding expertise and closely-managed supply chain have been behind some of Damen’s most important deliveries to date, fully representing the group’s diverse product portfolio. With the Mangalia shipyard, Damen will have its two largest shipyards in close proximity to one another.

The Romanian competition authorities have already approved the envisaged transaction. Furthermore, constructive meetings are being held with the Romanian Government in relation to future cooperation in Mangalia and the further development of the Romanian shipbuilding industry.

Ontario Government awards two ferry contract to Damen

The Government of Ontario and Damen Shipyards Group have signed a contract for the design, build and delivery for two “road” ferries to operate in the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes. The ferries will be a 68-metre Damen Road Ferry 6819 and a 98-metre Damen Road Ferry 9819. Although one vessel is 30 metres longer than the other they will share many design features and equipment specifications. Both will also be hybrid-ready, enabling them to be fitted with batteries when required. Both vessels are being designed in-house by Damen and will be fully customised for the local infrastructure.

The ferries will be based in Kingston and Loyalist Township, Ontario, at the north-eastern end of Lake Ontario. The new ferries will be significantly larger than the existing vessels and will create more economic benefits – helping more people, vehicles and goods travel to and from the islands. The larger of the two new ferries will serve the nearby Wolfe Island while the smaller will serve Amherst Island, just a few kilometres to the west. The new ferries are expected to make crossings faster for the one million passengers and 500,000 vehicles which travel annually between Wolfe Island and Kingston, and the 270,000 passengers and 130,000 vehicles which travel to and from Amherst Island each year.

Leo Postma, Damen Sales Manager, commented after the signing ceremony: “We are very happy and very proud to have this opportunity to further expand Ontario’s fleet of ferries. A rigorous tender process is always a test of how competitive we are and we are very pleased with the result. This new contract is a continuation of successful sales into Canada by Damen and the two new ships will take the number of Damen ferries operating in the country up to eight, along with other Damen workboats. More are also currently under construction. As a result of orders such as these, Damen Shipyards Galati is becoming an international centre of excellence for the production of ferries.”

Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation, issued a statement on the announcement: “Investing in new ferries will keep these beautiful island communities connected to the Ontario mainland. In addition to moving people to and from Wolfe and Amherst Islands, these new ferries will generate local economic opportunities and growth that will benefit all residents.”

The ferries are scheduled for delivery at the end of 2019 (Amherst) and at the end of 2020 (Wolfe).

DLM Loads up with more distributors

DLM give a warm welcome this month to two new distributors, Gammatec in Nigeria and Technik-1 Lifting in U.A.E . Both distributors provide a wealth of knowledge from various offshore, lifting and rigging backgrounds and will complement the existing distributor network. DLM now have a total of eight distributors globally, who all receive full training on DLM products, with the ability to calibrate and service load cells locally. Gammatec Nigeria and Technik 1 lifting are on hand to offer technical advice and have a great customer service track record.

Gammatec Nigeria manufactures and markets all types of non-destructive testing equipment and accessories. They first meet DLM at an exhibition they attended last year. As the business relationship flourished, DLM went on to design and manufacture a unique 50t steel tension and compression test machine. The test machine, which is operated by a hydraulic hand pump and valve set, allows the load to be securely held at certain points for accurate calibration, will now enable them to calibrate load cells ranging from 5t – 50t locally.

Stanley Asiegbu from Gammatec Nigeria , comments ‘ When we first met DLM we had a good feeling about them, they were very professional and had some excellent products on hand to demonstrate. We now have our test machine up and running and are really pleased with it. The test machine is a really exciting additional to our product range and means we can now calibrate DLM Load cells here on site, efficiently servicing the African market. We have already had lots of enquires for not only DLM standard products but also custom built solutions, so we are looking forward to a successful working relationship with DLM.’

Technik-1 Lifting, work across the crane load instrumentation segment of the crane industry and have an in-depth knowledge of this field. Established in 2010 Technik-1 also offers an unrivalled commissioning, calibration and repair services for load monitoring systems for offshore, onshore & industrial cranes. Technik-1 Lifting has been working closely with DLM in recent months on various bespoke projects involving DLM specialise load pins and system designs to mention a few.
