Meercat Boats wins build contract for Guernsey Harbours’ new multirole workboat

Market-leading steel multirole workboat builder, Meercat Boats, has today announced that it has been awarded the build contract for Guernsey Harbours’ workboat. 

The Meercat M15 is a 15.6m steel multirole vessel featuring a new side wheelhouse configuration, which will be built at Meercat Boats’ design and build facility in the Port of Southampton (UK). 
Jim Mair, Technical Manager of Meercat Boats commented, “Guernsey Harbours’ tender was extremely challenging due to the complexity of the multiple tasks that the workboat is expected to undertake. The wide variety of onboard equipment, combined with exacting performance requirements will certainly make her an incredibly versatile vessel. 
He continues. “As well as Meercat’s broad portfolio of proven workboat designs on offer, our main differentiator is our unrivalled ability to work with our customers in order to fully tailor a vessel to their specific needs.”

The Head of Technical & Estate Services for Guernsey Harbours, Martyn Stanfield, said, “The new workboat will provide a modern, safe and highly manoeuvrable working platform, with the addition of increased deck space and crane capacity, to carry out a wide range of duties. The design of the vessel will provide improved safety and comfort for our maintenance team.  It will be ready for a wide range of tasks, including towage, equipment transportation, infrastructure repairs, beacon and buoy maintenance and commercial diving activities. The ability to be able to work closely with the design team at Meercat will enable us to achieve the right vessel for the ever-demanding role that is required now and for the future of Guernsey Harbours.”

The " CLEGHORN " bronze bilge / deckwash pumps have been re-engineered to give a radically faster priming time. Types AM50D ( 2" ) & AM40D ( 1/1/2" ) have identical dimensions to the long-established models which have been widely fitted on fishing vessels throughout Ireland since 1987 and are thus fully interchangeable.

James Fisher continues Middle East expansion with the acquisition of Murjan

  • The acquisition harnesses local talent to bolster provision in the nearshore marine construction and maintenance sector James Fisher and Sons plc (JFS) has further expanded its capabilities in the Middle East with the acquisition of Murjan Al-Sharq Marine Contracting LLC (MSMC). 

MSMC is an established service provider based in Saudi Arabia, with a 10-year track record of successful projects with Saudi Aramco. The acquisition brings a wealth of local expertise into the JFS group. In particular, the move adds strategically important nearshore marine construction and maintenance capabilities to the JFS offer, supported by new, high-quality vessels and equipment from MSMC and the group’s existing shallow water fleet.

Chris Clark, vice president at MSMC, said:

The merger follows the recent announcement of multi-million dollar contract awards to support a major contractor in the region and wider investment from JFS to develop a significant and permanent presence on the Arabian Peninsula.

Concordia Damen celebrates naming of innovative Sendo Liner

On 15th February, at its yard in Werkendam, the Netherlands, Concordia Damen held a celebration to mark the naming of the Sendo Liner, an innovative dry cargo vessel.

Sendo Shipping in cooperation with Concordia Damen has designed a completely new vessel for the optimally efficient transportation of high cube containers between Rotterdam and Groningen, the Netherlands, and other inland terminals. Its specially-designed ballast system also further increases its container capacity. 

Sendo Shipping Managing Director Sebastiaan van der Meer says, “The Sendo Liner’sdesign is driven by our findings over many years of research and experience. It showcases our long-term strategy and vision for the future and will enable our goals of increased sustainability while increasing operational capabilities considerably.” 

The vessel is fully optimised for the transportation of containers. The liner, measuring 110 x 11.4 metres, has the ability to carry additional containers in its cargo hold. Additionally, it features an innovative ballast system which enables it to sit lower in the water to increase its available air draft when passing under the bridges it encounters on its route at full loading. In total, the Sendo Liner delivers an 8% increase in loading capacity relative to a conventional vessel of similar size. 

The Sendo Liner’sefficiency is not limited to increased capacity. Its diesel-electric propulsion results in very low in emissions, offering a reduction in CO2of 40% per container transported. This is a vessel that demonstrates Sendo Shipping’s long-term view; a vessel for the future.

The future-proofing of the Sendo Linergoes beyond its sustainable credentials and increased cargo capacity, however. The design is modular, thereby providing the vessel with the versatility for fast adaptation in the future, as well as easy maintenance. 

“It’s been a pleasure to work on a vessel as forward-thinking as this one,” says Concordia Damen. “The Sendo Liners is in many ways a vessel that reflects our own philosophy for a more efficient, cleaner future on with their new vessel and look forward to constructing similar vessels in the future.” 

Sendo Shipping has already placed an order with Concordia Damen for the delivery of two similar vessels that are currently under construction.

Why Pressure Gauges Alone are Insufficient for Detecting Leaks in Gaseous Suppression Systems

Do you protect your assets with fire suppression systems?
 
Gaseous extinguishing systems safeguard vitally important infrastructure against special hazards. 
 
Failure to monitor the gaseous extinguishing system which is fundamental to the protection of the workers and asset is inadmissible. It imperils the lives of occupants of the premises. It risks incurring crippling financial and reputational loss to the facility is a fire event comprises the critical infrastructure.
 
Regulations demand maintenance of the systems to ensure that they are operational in the event of a fire: ISO 14520-1:2015(E) assumes that these systems accidentally discharge and leak. The reality is that gaseous systems are checked for contents annually because they are pressurised and anything that is dynamic offers risk of loss of contents, but this fails to deal with the probability of discharge or leakage for the 364 days per annum in the interim between certification checks.
 
Using pressure gauges to monitor your systems?
 
Generally speaking, when a portion of the contents of a pressurised suppression cylinder escapes, the internal pressure inside the vessel will decrease. However, due to the dependence of the internal pressure on the temperature of the agent and the difficulties involved in accounting for this, this can sometimes lead to false negatives, thereby endangering the lives of those in the vicinity. Testing fire suppression systems with an ultrasonic liquid level indicator is therefore a necessary test required to ensure that suppression systems are safe and functioning correctly.
 
Variation in Pressure Over Modest Temperature Fluctuations
 
A change in temperature of just 5°C, for example from 17°C to 22°C can lead to significant changes in pressure in cylinders, while the liquid level remains comparatively constant. The below data demonstrates this for three typical super-pressurised cylinders.

Official ISO and NFPA regulations state that if the pressure in a cylinder was to drop by greater than 10% of its initial value it should be replaced, however, if the temperature of the contents increases, the base pressure may increase by up to 5% (or more for greater temperature changes). This means that the equivalent isothermal pressure would have to drop by close to 15% before a leak is recognised.
 
One should account for the effect of temperature when checking a pressure gauge however it is often difficult to determine an exact pressure value from a gauge (for example gauges frequently consist simply of a green section and a red section with widely-spaced tick marks). In addition to this, sometimes the internal temperature of the cylinder varies with respect to the ambient temperature.
 
The Solution?
 
Given that the liquid level in a cylinder tends to vary far less with temperature, using a portable ultrasonic liquid level indicator (Portalevel® MAX) is a reliable method of detecting leaks in cylinders, even when pressure gauges fail to do so.

LeeSan provide upgraded Pump Out Facilities for Belfast Harbour Marina

Lee Sanitation, the UK’s leading supplier and installer of pump out stations, was approached recently by Belfast Harbour Commission to examine the existing arrangements for sanitation waste at their Belfast Harbour Marina.

The existing system was installed almost 10 years ago and has not given good service. With this in mind, and taking into consideration future plans to increase the number of berths, the team at LeeSan were tasked with specifying a more efficient system and reconfiguring the existing infrastructure so that it would meet the new criteria.

After everything was planned and agreed, the company installed a Leestrom LS160-WTS station which features an integral transfer unit. This allows for an efficient discharge of the waste through smaller diameter pipework over maximum distances and heads.

The system was successfully commissioned and handed over to the Marina at the beginning of October 2018 and is now providing a reliable and efficient Pump Out facility.

Additionally, LeeSan have arranged for local pump engineering company FM Environmental to provide ongoing servicing and maintenance, ensuring that the system will continue to work well for many years to come.

OceanWise and Valeport supply environmental monitoring system to Harwich Haven Authority

Harwich Haven Authority (HHA) has chosen OceanWise to supply, install and maintain new tide and weather systems at the 900-year old east coast of England port. British marine instrument specialist, Valeport, has partnered with OceanWise to deliver the environmental monitoring systems and continue its long-standing relationship with HHA.

HHA, a trust port, is responsible for 150 square miles of the Haven and attracts trade from all over the world seeing 40% of the UK’s container traffic travel through its area.

The bespoke system for HHA uses the latest technology to measure tide, weather and wave conditions at Harwich and Felixstowe. It includes a modern and dynamic environmental monitoring system with dual telemetry to ensure that continuous real-time data is available to the Port for its 24/7 operational needs.The integrated system provided by OceanWise was designed to incorporate best in class sensors within a robust, weather-proof Valeport Tidestation. Housed within these tidal observation hubs are Valeport TideMaster tide gauges fitted with vented pressure sensors or the water level VRS 20 radar level sensors and in some cases a Met Station from Gill Instruments.

The data from the sensors within the TideStation is collected and transmitted via GPRS using OceanWise’s smart telemetry and is transmitted to OceanWise’s cloud-based data management and display system, Port-Log.net for storage and publication of information. Port-log.net provides fast access to the data, in a variety of displays, which can be viewed in real time or historically on portable or fixed devices.
The new environmental system provides HHA with continuous real time tide and meteorological data instantly to assist in all operational aspects of the port aiding survey, dredging and vessel movement. 

Although Port-Log.net is instrument independent, OceanWise and Valeport have collaborated on numerous environmental systems and supplied similar solutions to many ports and harbours since 2012.

Guy Frankland, Valeport marketing manager added: “Valeport has supplied HHA since the mid 1980’s with tide measurement instrumentation and this new dynamic environmental monitoring system delivered with OceanWise will be our third installation of tide gauges with HHA.  Working with OceanWise we’re providing vital, accurate data in real-time which will enable precision planning and decision making at this busy port.”
