IMH bolsters senior team as part of long-term growth strategy

Industrial and Marine Hydraulics (IMH) has recruited an operations manager and service manager to support its project and service teams.

Headquartered in Middlesbrough, UK, IMH delivers major hydraulic engineering projects and offers services across design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, maintenance and repairs, as well as component supplies and training.

The appointments have been made in line with IMH’s five-year growth plan. This has seen the business open a new facility at the Port of Blyth, which is equipped to provide full onsite service and inspection operations, and make significant investments in machinery and an ERP system, which is reshaping how the business operates and is generating process efficiencies. 

Jonathan Marley, who has 14 years project and operational management experience and performed a number of roles at pumping solutions specialist Sulzer has been appointed as Operations Manager. He will have day-to-day responsibility for operational efficiency and quality control across the service and maintenance work streams of IMH and will manage the execution of all longer-term major project commitments.

Joining as part of the senior management team, he will also be responsible for identifying and implementing continuous improvement measures across the business. 
 
Chris Mosley, who has been appointed as Service Manager, will work closely with Jonathan and lead IMH’s fast-paced service delivery team. 

Chris spent 20 years with the British Army, working his way up to Avionics Supervisor / Flight Line Crew Chief, where he co-ordinated maintenance support on various aircraft in high-pressure environments. This experience will be invaluable when working in the demanding and responsive environment at IMH, which is driven by the complex needs of its customers.

IMH signs distributor agreement and brings high-pressure hydraulic technology to the Port of Blyth

Industrial and Marine Hydraulics (IMH) can now offer an even greater range of hydraulic solutions to customers, thanks to a new agreement with SPX Flow.

IMH, headquartered in Middlesbrough and with a facility at the Port of Blyth, creates innovative hydraulic solutions for a range of industries by drawing on its extensive engineering knowledge and experience of real-world applications.

The company has entered into a distribution agreement with SPX Flow on its Power Team brand, which has a broad range of component parts, accessories and tools suitable to the needs of the shipbuilding, manufacturing and industrial processing sectors. This means that IMH can further support the needs of clients based at the Port of Blyth, and the wider area, with hand pumps, pumps and jacks

Following an intensive two days of theory and practical training on site at SPX Flow’s EU operation centre in Holland the IMH team based at the Port of Blyth are all certified service and repair technicians for the full SPX Flow portfolio. A further SPX Flow-trained IMH engineer will operate from its Middlesbrough facility – ensuring the company is able to offer a full range of Power Team equipment from either location. 

Two IMH employees received further sales training in the UK which means that should a customer have a need, IMH can identify and recommend the best product for the job. Under the contract IMH is also able to quickly source a replacement should any SPX Flow jack or pump become damaged. IMH is also able to provide servicing on the jacks which have to be tested every 12 months as part of safety inspections.

Manor Renewable Energy Unveils COVID-19 Compliant Vessel Design for Manor Endurance

Portland-based Manor Renewable Energy (MRE) has been working on the challenge of social distancing and work environment safety for offshore technicians and vessel crew throughout their fleet of vessels. 

MRE’s newest vessel currently under construction, the Manor Endurance (due to be delivered in July 2020) was originally designed to transport 24 passengers; however, in order to meet the new social distancing requirements currently in place, the design has been amended. The updated vessel design allows 12 offshore technicians to be transported safely with the inclusion of 2 metre social distancing.

The updated seating layout for the technicians is effectively split between the port and starboard side, with 7 seats in one half and 5 in the other. Each section of the vessel is accessed from a separate dedicated entrance and has separate mess rooms, toilets and shower units, ensuring each team is isolated from the other. 

A new series of virtual tour videos has been released detailing the updated COVID-19 compliant vessel design, together with virtual walk-throughs of the port and starboard sides, highlighting the safety measures that have been implemented.

New Managing Director to lead Marine Division

Virus or no virus – people still need Loos!

Although we are all trying to cope with the “New Normal”, the team at LeeSan are still working hard to satisfy the demand for toilets and sanitation products.
The latest orders are packed and ready to go in the warehouse.

They include:
Specialist, low water flush HeadMaster Toilets for use in railway carriages. These are for trains currently “in build” in one of the larger railway works in the country.

Toilet and waste tank systems for delivery to canal boat builders who are still working and building narrow boats.
Specialist waste transfer systems for floating homes being built in the South of England And EcoFlush toilets to be fitted into portable welfare units for on-site applications.

Technical Director Karl Sutcliffe comments: “It’s obvious when you think of it, some things just have to keep going no matter what. At LeeSan we are providing equipment which is absolutely essential and we will continue to do so to the best of our ability in these difficult times”.

Working at the company base in Warwickshire, the team are operating a socially distanced, shift system. This involves some of them working from home for part of the time. New Build Export Delivery for the SMS Group

SMS delivers a 24m new build aquaculture workboat for a Maltese fish farm specialist operator.

In the midst of the most challenging global pandemic, The SMS Group in Southampton has delivered a new build 24m aquaculture vessel to a Tuna farm operator in Malta.

The SMS Group has an enviable reputation as specialists in ship repair, marine engineering and major fabrication projects in the commercial marine, defence and superyachts sectors. 

The company also builds workboats for the marine civils, aquaculture, fisheries and ports and harbours sectors.
This latest vessel has 24m LOA, 8.5m beam, and a 3m draft.  She’s been built to the MCA-MGN-280-Catergory 1 (150nm from safe haven) workboat code.  

Her principle purpose will be tuna harvesting and aquaculture/fish farm logistical and maintenance support.
Mr David Azzopardi, Director of Fish and Fish Ltd, said:

“This represents a major investment for Fish and Fish Ltd, and it illustrates not only the strength of our business but also our belief in the environmental sustainability of the aquaculture industry here in Malta.”

“We’re currently exploring two further new build workboats and several major pontoon projects.

The SMS Group has changed the way that it works since the onset of the pandemic. It has new risk assessments which are frequently updated and method statements, increased on and off-site hygiene and sanitation. 

It is also enforcing social-distancing across all working environments.  The firm is also following the advice of the Government, the World Health Organisation, Public Health England and the National Health Service.

DLM Design, Develop and Dispatch 1.5m Detrenching Grapnel

Dynamic Load Monitoring (DLM) launch their new 1.5m De-trenching grapnel to aid the offshore industry in recovering subsea products buried in the seabed up to 1.5m. 

The Southampton based load cell and load monitoring company have been supplying the offshore industry with a variety of Grapnels, including Flatfish, Rennie, Gifford and Sandpoint grapnels for hire and purchase for over 15 years.

Recently, DLM saw a gap in the market and today launch the new 1.5m De trenching grapnel, designed and developed by DLM engineers.  

The Grapnel is manufactured from high tensile steel, suitable for withstanding the harsh offshore environments. In order to further test the structure and material of the grapnel, finite element analysis was performed during the design phase, utilising DLM’s Solidworks 3D design suite. This simulates the various stresses and strains acting on the grapnel in a variety of different seabed conditions and allowed for optimisation of the design. 

The Grapnel itself is scissor shaped at one end, which is designed to break the surface of the seabed and fitted with stabilising bars at the other end, to assist its dynamics and balance in the water column, while also for use in the seabed. In addition, there is an option to fit two Tyne’s if required either side of the grapnel, Tynes are removable and fitted with wear tips at the end, prolonging Tyne life. 

The grapnel, which has recently been shipped to a customer in Asia for an offshore project, has been designed to withstand tow tensions of up to 15t. It has a built in shear pin rated to a breaking load of 15t which shears and protects the tow line and the Tyne if tension is exceeded beyond this point. 

The De trenching Grapnel is typically used in conjunction with DLM’s Saddleback monitor, which measures the line tension on a cable when being towed. When set up on a ship’s deck, the Saddleback will measure the tension on the tow cable and a spike will then indicate that the cable has been caught by the de trenching grapnel. 

Martin Halford, Managing Director comments ‘DLM have been working alongside the offshore industry for many years. We speak to many customers regarding their requirements and it soon became apparent that there was a need for recovering out of service cable at greater burial depth. With our in house design capabilities and our manufacturing background, we put our heads together and developed the 1.5 De trenching Grapnel.’

‘Our dynamic and dedicated design team are always keeping abreast of changes in the industry and coming up with new innovated ideas to support offshore projects. Our future plans consist of increasing the penetration depth by designing a new larger Grapnel. Furthermore, we have the option to fit load pins and load monitoring equipment on the grapnel and acoustic packages, which transmit a load signal to the surface along with the condition.’

Improve safety and best practice in level monitoring of industrial tanks with the all new Portatank®

Tanks are used across a range of industries including chemical and food, process and system engineering. Measuring the amount of liquid present inside a storage vessel, pressure vessel or tank is a common requirement in the process control sectors. The scale of demand in the process industry requires innovative technology, so that manufacturing remains smart and efficient.  The latest innovation from Coltraco Ultrasonics, Portatank® is the ideal solution for non-invasively identifying levels of water and clean liquids in large industrial tanks. The Portatank® is a handheld ultrasonic tool to accurately identify the level of liquid contents in large containers safely, quickly and easily.

Unlike traditional methods of testing, the Portatank® boasts its core capability of non-invasive testing.  The Portatank® measures levels of fluids, particularly hazardous liquids, where the tank cannot be opened for safety reasons and a float gauge cannot be installed. With external, non-invasive, non-intrusive technology, the Portatank® is suitable for testing hazardous liquids without the risk of contaminating the liquid. As the liquid storage system is undisturbed during testing, with no removal of lids needed, risk is limited to the tester. The unit has a straightforward testing process, requiring only the simple application of the sensor to the external container wall. This protects the operator from the health and safety problems that are presented through invasive methods as well as increasing efficiency. Using Ultrasonics is non-invasive, robust, easy to use and avoids the risk of harm to site engineers.

As an example, Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) can present challenges to efficient monitoring of liquid contents. IBCs are reusable storage tanks which commonly carry circa 1,040 litres, however there is often a lack of confidence in the internal IBC monitoring systems. Most of the time, manual verification is needed for the contents and amounts in IBCs. One such manual verification method is simply , opening the top valve of IBCs for the physical dip stick measurement which can create risk  to the person testing and also of contamination. As a solution, the Portatank® is ideal because it is non-invasive and able to identify levels of liquids in large industrial tanks and IBCs of diameter range: 0.5 – 15 metres.

Designed to increase process efficiency, the handheld portable Portatank® requires no installation time or cost. With clear LIQUID / NO LIQUID result, the Portatank® is accurate to +/- 10mm, providing the plant a safe, quick and accurate method to monitor contents. The non-invasive technology also means there is no downtime, as liquid level measurement can be taken when the tank systems are “live”. This adaptable technology can work with liquid levels that fluctuate over time, as well as test a wide range of tanks and liquids. SMM 2021: New impetus for the maritime transformation

Every two years SMM brings together industry stakeholders from around the world. Because of the coronavirus crisis, the leading international maritime trade fair has been postponed until 2-5 February 2021. Not surprisingly, the effects of the pandemic were the main topic at the SMM Advance Press Conference. Leading experts assessed the current situation in the shipping industry and its consequences for the SMM agenda, which will focus on Green Shipping and Digitalisation.

Hamburg, 14-05-2020 – Social distancing, face masks, avoiding crowds: In a matter of weeks the coronavirus has turned our lives upside down. That goes for the SMM advance press conference, as well: This year the CEO of Hamburg’s expo centre, Bernd Aufderheide, did not welcome his guests in person but to a virtual venue. Panel experts and dozens of top-ranking media representatives from around the world joined him for a video conference.

The President and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH first commented on the postponement of SMM, the leading international maritime trade fair. “The continued, highly dynamic development of the pandemic and the resulting ban on major events have compelled us to reschedule SMM to February 2021. The vast majority of exhibitors support the new dates. We have been receiving plenty of positive feedback. We are therefore confident that we have made the right decision,” said Aufderheide. The expo CEO takes an optimistic view of the future: “Together we will overcome this crisis and host an SMM that will live up to the high standards everyone expects.” 
The panel of experts who joined the advance press conference exemplified SMM’s claim of reflecting the entire value chain of the maritime industry. From shipowners and suppliers to a classification society, leading representatives of the industry’s key segments were part of the digital expert panel. The theme of the event was the coronavirus and what it means for the transformation of the maritime sector.

Globalisation is slowing
The maritime industry has been facing climate change, the digitalisation challenge, and now, the coronavirus crisis. These changes are of “a similar scale as the move from sail to steam”, said Martin Stopford, President of Clarkson Research. It is important to remember that trade growth was already slowing before COVID-19 hit, he added. “We are moving into an era where globalisation is no longer the issue. We will see more short-sea shipping and local manufacturing,” said Stopford. He anticipates three conceivable scenarios for shipping after the coronavirus: In the best of cases sea trade will pick up again in 2023, growing by 3.2 per cent annually. The second scenario assumes a prolonged recession with world trade shrinking by one per cent between 2020 and 2024, followed by renewed growth at a rate of 2.2 per cent. “In scenario 3 there is an extended recession with sea trade declining by 17 per cent by 2024,” said Stopford in his most pessimistic forecast.

As for future ship fuels, the renowned shipping expert expects three innovation waves. “Diesel is wonderful stuff and replacing it is not going to be easy,” Stopford pointed out. The first wave will see conventionally propelled but optimised vessels. This will be followed by gas and hybrid or electrically powered ships featuring low emissions, advanced digital control systems and batteries. In the third wave, fuel cells will allow ships to operate emission-free.

Suppliers in need of support
One possible way to reduce emissions today is wind propulsion, a technology Cristina Aleixendri, COO at bound4blue believes in. She sees the pandemic opening up many new opportunities for the industry: “The coronavirus could be the driving force enabling us to achieve the decarbonisation goals even before 2050,” she said. Her Catalan start-up does its share to make it happen: Bound4blue has developed a smart sail system called ‘Wingsail’. “Shipping companies can save up to 40 per cent of fuel and the associated emissions,” says Aleixendri who has made it onto the 2019 Forbes “30 under 30” list. “The purpose of green technologies and digitalisation is to cut emissions and costs. They must be profitable from day one, without any subsidies,” says Aleixendri. But how can shipowners invest during a crisis?
A question Dirk Lehmann, Managing Director of the Hamburg-based company Becker Marine Systems, and Vice Chair of SEA Europe, has been mulling over. He calls on governments to make far-reaching concessions and provide support: "Shipyards and maritime suppliers are important pillars supporting the sea transport sector. These companies and their employees are suffering from the pandemic in especially severe ways," Lehmann stressed. "They depend on the support of the political decision-makers. Providing this support is the only way a steady supply of goods and technical progress can be ensured in Europe." 

Following through with the green agenda
Smart transport logistics keeps supply chains going and plays a vital role in the economy, especially in times of the coronavirus. At the same time it places a heavy burden on seafarers, some of whom have been on board for months without a break. They are forced to take over their colleagues’ shifts as long as crew changes are impossible and there is no way for them to return to their home countries because of the risk of infection. Sadan Kaptanoglu, President of the International Shipowners Association BIMCO, has called on governments not to abandon ship owners and their crews at sea and on land. Since taking office, Kaptanoglu has also been advocating for greener shipping, a goal the industry must pursue despite the crisis, she said: „We still need to reach the 2050 reduction target for emissions, and one or two years of low revenues will not change that.“

Digital services
The crisis not only affects shipping companies but classification societies like DNV GL, as well. But the class experts were well-prepared: Since introducing its remote diagnostics system DATE (Direct Access to Technical Experts) in 2018, DNV GL has performed more than 15,000 surveys remotely. “We have been lucky to have gained experience working with remote survey schemes over the past few years. DNV GL's unique DATE service allows us to ensure safety and regulatory compliance through the use of modern technology on board,"said Knut Ørbeck-Nielssen, CEO of DNVGL – Maritime. In these times, flexibility wins. To the Norwegian class society this means granting customers more options: "We know that many shipowners are in a difficult situation today. That's why we grant the postponement of surveys, applying a force majeure clause,” Ørbeck-Nielssen added. Every crisis harbours an opportunity for improvement, he said: "We are on the cusp of a renaissance of shipping and the maritime industry. Within just a few months the pandemic has turbocharged the sector's digitalisation journey, advancing it by half a decade."

Discussing crisis management in times of the coronavirus, along with green shipping and digitalisation, the SMM advance press conference gave participants a foretaste of the industry's key topics eight months ahead of the fair. The specialist conferences accompanying the trade fair promise to deliver fascinating new insights, as well. "We look forward to welcoming visitors from more than 120 countries next February. Here in Hamburg they will meet up with exhibitors whose innovative products and services will reflect the maritime state-of-the-art," says Bernd Aufderheide.

New commercial pontoon in Hartlepool Harbour from Inland and Coastal Marina Systems

Hartlepool’s commercial fishing fleet now has new safe access to its vessels in all weather conditions, at any time of the day or night, thanks to a new installation from Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS).
 
In March, working with the main contractor, P&D Environmental, ICMS delivered its Heavy-Duty Pontoon system to the Fish Quay. The company’s extensive experience working with ports and harbour operators enabled it to design a bespoke solution that fitted within, and utilised, the existing infrastructure and assets.
 
Equipped with a 150mm rubber D-fender, the 90 metre by 3 metre pontoon boasts patented composite concrete decking providing a strong, anti-slip, surface and stable berthing facilities, suitable for vessels up to 130T in the busy mixed-use commercial quay.

The P&D Environmental team worked closely with Inland and Coastal’s design and site team to ensure the system was installed with minimal impact on the quay’s daily business,” says Ben Jones, Contracts Director at P&D Environmental.

Existing vessel operators are now making good use of the new robust facility, and by extending the range of the craft now able to operate from the quay, new revenue sources are also being generated.
