Winel Introduce A New Addition to Their Range of Tank Vent Check Valves

Winel BV are proud to announce a new addition to their product range, the type ‘CMO’ aluminium OVERFLOW tank vent check valve, suitable for direct discharge ‘over-board’.

Winel’s latest development is manufactured from a seawater resistant ALMG4.5 aluminium alloy. Available in sizes DN40 to DN400, this latest valve has a high flow capacity, it is a lightweight, yet extremely rigid slimline design.

The new CMO compliments Winel’s ‘standard’ type CM aluminium tank vent check valve which was launched in Autumn 2016. The standard CM discharges on deck. If discharge on deck is not possible, the new CMO tank vent check valve can be simply mounted in the piping system, allowing discharge directly overboard.

Winel have been producing tank vent check valves for over 50 years and have Type Approvals from all major Classification Societies for the whole range of tank vent check valves. The new CMO has been tested and certified in accordance with the relevant requirements of the European Union Recognised Organisations Mutual Recognition procedure for Type Approval.
Tank vent check valves or vent heads as they are more commonly known, are used on all ships in order to ventilate ballast and void tanks, while also preventing any contamination of the contents of the tank with water during rough seas. It is a requirement that all tanks aboard ships are protected from penetration of seawater in accordance with the International Convention on Load Lines 1966.

Winel tank vent check valves can be used on any type of commercially used ship or yacht, navy vessel and offshore platform. By using Winel tank vent check valves, you are taking advantage of a solid, maintenance free and fully automatic operating system.

Tug Malta’s Damen ASD 2913 named in Malta

St. Angelo named in the presence of island’s Prime Minister

On Friday, 9th February Tug Malta’s Damen ASD 2913 was named St. Angelo at a ceremony attended by the Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat, and the island nation’s Minister of Transport, Ian Borg. Acting as sponsor of the vessel was Mrs. Michelle Muscat, the wife of the Prime Minister. Tug Malta is part of the Rimorchiatori Riuniti Group. The ceremony was also attended by Tug Malta Chairman John E. Sullivan and CEO Mario Mizzi, Rimorchiatori Riuniti Group Chiefs Giovanni Delle Piane and Gregorio Gavarone and Damen Sales Manager Antonio Marte.

In his address, the Prime Minister said that the vessel was an indication of Tug Malta’s commitment to helping Malta establish as a global player in the maritime sector. He pointed out that the tug will provide port towage services and environmental assistance, and will also be able to serve the island’s LNG needs, by safely operating at Delimara LNG terminal.

Mr. Sullivan in his speech explained that Damen has outfitted the tug with a number of options to ensure its suitability for such tasks, including a gas protection system, double drum render recovery winch, firefighting system and oil recovery capabilities. Mr. Sullivan stated that the acquisition of the tug is fully in line with Tug Malta and Rimorchiatori Riuniti ambitions to provide an excellent service with a modern fleet.

The standard design of the Damen ASD Tug is a compact, yet powerful vessel offering over 80 tonnes of bollard pull for escort and direct towing operations in harbours and coastal waters.

During the ceremony, Mr. Marte, who is responsible for Damen sales in the region, thanked Mrs. Muscat for carrying out the role of ship’s sponsor and said, "On behalf of the Damen Shipyards Group I would like to thank the management of Tug Malta and Rimorchiatori Riuniti for the trust they have placed in Damen. Over the years we have established a relationship that goes beyond that of customer and supplier – a partnership and friendship based on mutual trust. I wish for this relationship to continue for many years ahead."

Mr Marte concluded saying, "I would like to offer my best wishes to the crew of St. Angelo, for many pleasant and safe operations aboard."

Jack-up vessel Seafox 5 departs Damen Verolme Rotterdam ready for the next generation of wind turbines

The 151-metre, self-propelled, DP2 jack-up rig Seafox 5 has left the Damen Verolme Rotterdam (DVR) shipyard following a four-month refit in which the boom of its main crane was lengthened to prepare it for a new contract, along with a range of maintenance and other upgrade works. Seafox 5 is now equipped to undertake offshore wind projects involving the next generation of larger wind turbines in water depths of up to 65 metres.

Delivered in 2012, Seafox 5 is owned and operated by jack-up specialist Seafox BV; the world´s largest offshore jack-up ASV / offshore support company. 151 metres long and with a breadth of 50 metres, she is the largest vessel in the Seafox fleet and has a 1,200 tonne main crane and accommodation for up to 150 personnel. Her arrival at DVR in September last year marked her first time in drydock since her initial delivery.

The primary reason for the visit was to lengthen the main boom of her Liebherr crane. This will enable her to fulfil an upcoming contract with GeoSea to install 66 six-megawatt wind turbines at the Merkur wind farm off the coast of Germany. While she was alongside, a series of other works were undertaken including a special periodic survey, testing the jacking system up to 70-metres above sea level, renewing the leg guide wear plates, installing a secondary Sormec crane and a repaint.

Seafox 5 Rig manager Alex Eijgenraam commented: "Seafox 5’s call at the Damen Verolme yard marked a busy and intense period for Seafox 5, its crew and office project team. However, all the scheduled works were completed on time and without incident. Seafox 5 left the yard as good as new and ready for her next assignment for the offshore wind industry. The long experience of Damen Verolme with jack up rigs has contributed greatly to this result."

"It was a tight time frame, but we finished on time and to budget," added Mark Heuders, Project Manager at DVR. "The key to success was, as always, preparation and cooperation, with careful planning of lead times for each activity and regular progress meetings. It has once again been a pleasure to work with Seafox."

Damen has a longstanding relationship with Seafox, with the latter’s vessels regular visitors to both DVR and Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam. The most recent arrival is the Seafox 2, which moored at DVR in the early hours of the 4th of February for some minor maintenance.

Optimising vessel performance has always been on our agenda. Increasing regulation, fluctuations in bunker prices and a growing concern for the global environmental impact of shipping has led to an even higher focus on the way vessels operate. This increased pressure forces shipping companies to improve vessels’ technical and operational efficiency even further.

The design of a ship, the shape of its hull, its propulsion systems, onboard communications, route optimisation and navigation software, maintenance, fuel type, environmental technology and dry-docking procedures are just some of the variables that will have a significant impact on a vessel’s energy efficiency, fuel consumption and overall cost of operation. Even marginal improvements in these areas can combine to create a material difference to a company’s bottom line.

An up-to-date insight into current and future regulations, such as the upcoming CO2 regulations, Global Sulphur Cap, NOx Tier III, Ballast Water, Biofouling regulations is imperative. Ship owners need to analyse the impact of the regulations, explore necessary vessel adjustments, and evaluate performance implications.

There is an ever-growing list of actors with a stake in a vessel’s performance management. Ship owners, cargo owners, cargo operators, pool operators, charter companies, technical managers, crew, banks, investors and insurance companies will have to deal with transparency and evidence of commitment to efficiency measures in their contracts. We will look at how these different interests affect one another.

This Forum will provide a tactical approach to vessel performance – with practical discussion, and an overall holistic approach to ship operations. We will investigate regulations, innovations and best practices for vessel performance in design and operations. We will look at the future of integrated whole ship operations, and consider the impact of ship efficiency on ship shore operations.

Through two defined plenary sessions and informative question and answer panel sessions, we will focus on practical methods, and will bring together representatives to discuss vessel performance optimisation to achieve operational excellence.

Session 1: Ship Planning and Design for Optimal Efficiency
A vessel should be designed optimally for the operations that it will encounter over its lifetime. There has been much change in the industry over the last five to seven years, and focus on efficient designs has increased significantly. Experts in ship operations and ship design will use this session to discuss how design methods have improved, both in setting new requirements to efficient tonnage and also in today’s ship design methods.

Session 2: Fleet Performance Management
Companies are slowly learning how to manage new anti-fouling coatings, quality of dry-dockings, how and when to conduct hull cleanings, and propeller polishing. Hull and propeller degradation during and after a dry-docking period is a major contributor to ship underperformance, but other factors also leave for improvement; engine efficiency, power production and power consumption, paint, use of boilers, shaft generators, consumption in harbours – these all have an impact on the efficiency of the typical merchant fleet.
