Solace Global Maritime Prep for Final Campaign of Shetland Project

Solace Global Maritime is currently in the final stages of planning guard vessel deployments for Campaign 3 of an offshore project in Scotland.

Once complete, later this year, this project will allow for the export of renewable energy generated from Shetland to the UK mainland, connecting Shetland to the nation’s electricity transmission system for the first time.

Solace has the most recent, proven experience in cable protection for some of the UK and Europe’s largest critical infrastructure projects, and their success protecting the first 100km of cable on Campaign 1 in 2022 saw them deploying further guard vessels for Campaign 2 earlier this year, due to complete later this summer.

This final push will see completion of the full 260km subsea HVDC link and with Campaign 3 guard vessel deployments beginning this weekend, and the number of vessels on protection duty more than doubling in the coming weeks, it’s a busy time for the project team, but the focus remains on quality and safety above all else.

Marine Fire Safety secures hire agreement for NEW 14 person liferaft at Seawork

After an incredibly successful Seawork show, Marine Fire Safety; specialists in firefighting and lifesaving equipment, has secured their first order for a new 14 person ISO liferaft.

The hire agreement, which was established at last week’s show, will see a new Seago 14 person ISO liferaft delivered and installed on board Southampton RIB Charter’s brand-new Highfield Patrol 860.

Akis Zissis, Managing Director at Southampton RIB Charter comments, “The arrival of the 14 person raft, presents a huge opportunity to boost our income here at Southampton RIB Charter. Until now, we have been restricted to carrying a maximum of 10 passengers on our charters, however, with this new liferaft, we can now take an additional two passengers per charter and have the option of having an additional crew member whilst carrying just one raft. This is a huge advantage for us as a business.”

Big Orders for Ultra Guard at Seawork 2023

Ultraguard have been given the contract to provide ultrasonic biofouling protection on twenty-four new vessels ordered by Farra Marine on the first day of Seawork 2023 in Southampton.

The new vessels are to be built by Penguin International Ltd in Singapore.

These new vessels are a significant investment by the Irish-based Farra Marine. This expansion of their fleet of modern new built CTVs is a mark of the success that Farra has built in the offshore renewables sector.

Both Farra Marine and Penguin International are repeat Ultraguard customers and we’re extremely proud to be their preferred choice for ultrasonic protection. It was great to see them again at Seawork 2023.

Each vessel will have six Ultraguard Master Series MS02 units installed, three in each hull sponson. The twelve transducers will give the vessel an even spread of protection from biofouling such as mussels and barnacles which would cause the vessel to lose operating speed as well as increase it’s fuel consumption and emissions.

Ultraguard’s Sales Director Gavin Fisher said: “I am really happy for Martin and everyone at Farra Marine with their fleet expansion. The 144 MS02 units we will be supplying them will help keep the vessels operating efficiently and clean”

In what was a record-breaking day for Ultraguard at Seawork 2023, we also took significant orders from two further customers.

Dramatic change in wave climate at Haslar Marina following breakwater installation

Berth holders and visitors to boatfolk’s Haslar Marina in Gosport can be certain of a good night’s sleep now Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) has completed the installation of a 70m wave attenuating breakwater at the eastern end of the Haslar marina.

As part of a two-phase project to expand berthing at this popular south coast marina, ICMS has used its expertise in pontoon design and manufacture to create a bespoke floating concrete breakwater to reduce the wave climate in a particularly exposed section of the marina.

“We’re delighted with the work that Inland and Coastal has done, completing the final piece of our overall marina extension work,” says Ben Lippiett, Marina General Manager.

“One of the unique selling points of our marina is its position close to Portsmouth Harbour entrance, but this has meant that there has always been a bit of motion at this exposed end of the marina, which has previously made it difficult to fill the berths.

“What our new floating concrete breakwater has done is to create a wave screen effect and has given us greater protection from the action of the wind and waves.”

Extending the frontage of the marina from the bow of the iconic green lightship, the protection provided by this new fully serviced floating breakwater has enabled Haslar Marina to create new berths, maximising usable space as demand for quality berthing across the UK goes up, and increasing return on investment.

Ben continues: “Feedback from customers so far is that they’ve seen a dramatic change in the wave climate. It is quite literally rough on one side, and calm on the other.

“What the new breakwater has also given us is very usable, high load capacity space to accommodate much larger boats, superyachts and sail training vessels. Between the increase in berthing and the wave protection, it’s just finished off our berthing plan tremendously, we’re very happy.”

Haslar Marina’s new floating concrete breakwater comprises two 60-tonne 20m x 4m and two 53 tonne 15m x 4m concrete breakwater units.

Manufactured in house, ICMS’ floating concrete breakwaters are an option where a fixed breakwater isn’t feasible and are designed to attenuate waves to a level where sheltered berthing can then be provided.

Built from reinforced concrete with internal floating blocks, the breakwaters incorporate high yield stainless steel wire rope and IRHD 70 rubber buffers combining high strength and high flexibility.

Given the severe environments in which they function, ICMS pays particular attention to the lifespan of the units. Built in accordance with exposure classifications, coupled with a detailed analysis of the site, the galvanised reinforcing steel and concrete cover ensure the longevity of the breakwater units.

ICMS to host networking event and charitable reception at Seawork

Specialists in commercial pontoon and crew transfer vessel (CTV) berthing, Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) will be hosting a networking event and charitable drinks reception on the opening day of Seawork (13 June 2023) between 15.00 and 17.00.

Managing Director of maritime civil engineering firm TILT, Ian Dobson is joining ICMS on its stand (M6) at 15.30 to give a short presentation around adapting harbour infrastructure to meet the needs of future low carbon fuel supply. Commercial maritime and marine trade professionals are invited to join Ian on ICMS’ stand and network with like-minded industry colleagues while enjoying a drink.

The event will also be shining a spotlight on the fundraising efforts of Mark Ashley-Miller though his Harbour Master Sailing Challenge. Supported by ICMS, Mark is attempting to sail around the British Isles to meet every Harbour Master in the UK and Ireland, raising money for The Seafarers’ Charity as he goes.

Mark has raised over £20,000 for The Seafarers’ Charity, a non-profit organisation which supports those who work at sea, and their families. Attendees at the drinks reception will be given the opportunity to donate to this worthwhile cause via a specially created QR code on the stand.
