Seismic vessels Oceanic Sirius and Oceanic Vega complete tandem drydocking at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam

Sister-ships Oceanic Siriusand Oceanic Vegahave completed a round-the-clock, 10-day maintenance programme at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm). For eight of those days the two 106-metre vessels were in the yard’s 250-metre drydock no.4 in a tandem arrangement, to maximise the efficient use of resources. The twin SX120 type seismic research vessels are state-of-the-art and owned by CGG Eidesvik Ship Management AS, a joint venture betweenEidesvik Offshore and CGG. The builder was Ulstein Verft in Norway.

The primary reason for their visit to DSAm was to have a series of repairs and upgrades as well as their hulls cleaned and repainted. The repairs and upgrades included maintenance on the propeller nozzles of both vessels and, by tenting the area around the propellers, DSAm was able to undertake the work without interrupting or delaying the paintworks. This helped minimise valuable time spent at the yard. The two vessels departed DSAm on the 4th November.

The works were overseen by CGG Eidesvik Ship Management AS, a longstanding Damen client, on the basis that, when it comes to safety, quality and working hard around the clock, there is a high degree of consensus between CGG and Damen. Comments from the CGG Eidesvik team included: “The crew and staff members from Oceanic Vegaand Oceanic Siriuswere pleased with the mutual cooperation and impressed by the quick response on several repair items related to the seismic equipment on board. The safety level and culture were also up to both parties’ expectations and standards.”

Tjeerd Schulting, managing director of DSAm, added: “When riding a tandem, one is steering and one is working the pedals. Only excellent team work will bring you quickly and safely over the finishing line.”

Product Launches and High Profile Project Wins â€“ A Busy 2018 for PSM

It’s been an exceptionally busy and rewarding year for PSM with product launches and high profile project wins throughout 2018.
The launch of their highly anticipated APT product got off to a flying start with many diverse orders, and approaching 2,000 units have been ordered in the first six months of release.

In addition, they have launched their redeveloped VPM display. This small but powerful touch screen display provides a highly cost-effective solution for smaller tank gauging systems or as a repeater display for larger packages.

One of their most notable project wins was working with Cammell Laird on their £49.5m refit of the British Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) combined fleet ship, the RFA Fort Victoria, one of the largest vessels operated by the British Ministry of Defence. Another project credited to the successful track record of their products was for the Belgian Rock Dumping Vessel, MV Pompeii.

They’ve also diversified further into other applications by developing and supplying an alarm and control system for the monitoring and warning of water entry into the dry area compartment of new floating wind turbine platforms.
These are just a few of their 2018 highlights, and theyhave already got some exciting new products and projects in development for 2019.

WEG and Praxis sign MoU to support Damen Saab bid for the Brazilian Navy

On December 13th, Brazilian company WEG Electric Equipment, and Dutch company Praxis Automation Technology, both leading companies within their respective fields, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the bid of Damen Shipyards Group and Saab for the construction of four corvettes for the Brazilian Navy. For the Tamandaré class corvettes bid, Praxis and WEG will be partners for the supply of the complete Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).

The signing took place at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in the Netherlands and was witnessed by staff from Damen, Saab and its strategic Brazilian partner Wilson Sons Estaleiros.

Praxis and WEG already have a track record of cooperation in Brazil, with the two companies jointly installing equipment on board more than 40 vessels built by Wilson Sons Estaleiros and designed by Damen, including the first diesel-electric PSV in Brazil. Praxis develops, manufactures and delivers innovative automation and navigation equipment, while WEG is a Brazilian technology company that among many other activities is active in the area of industrial automation.

With this MoU, the Damen Saab Tamandaré consortium is ensuring another strong partnership with two leading Brazilian companies, which will be part of the project to build four corvettes in Brazil. It proves the intention of the consortium to present a credible and reliable offer to the Brazilian Navy with a proven ship design (SIGMA 10514), a world class Combat Management System and strong partnerships with Brazilian companies for the construction and ‘through life support’ of the future Tamandaré class.

The barriers are made from polyethylene which is durable and UV resistant. They can be used for setting your own limits in large bodies of water, such as securing marinas and providing low to medium security out at sea or in lakes. Each module of the barrier is joined together with galvanized axles and joined to the next module with galvanized chains and clamps. They have a compressed foam filling, making them extremely buoyant. The colours they are produced in (yellow, orange, red and white) are highly visible and perfect for the open oceans, areas with high waves, output channels with strong currents, and dams, to name a few.

Because the barrier is created from a number of modules, should it be damaged, it is easily fixed without having to interrupt the barrier’s service and without having to replace the entire unit. The system is anchored to the sea floor keeping it in place, and due to it’s unique design, the barrier can be created in a configuration specific to the area it is needed in. Each module’s dimensions are as follows: width – 95cm, Length – 190cm, Height – 95cm.

Damen signs with Port Nelson for ASD Tug 2411

New tug increases capabilities in support of port expansion project

On 10thDecember, Damen sales manager Sjoerd de Bruin signed a contract with Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne in New Zealand. Damen will deliver an ASD Tug 2411 to Port Nelson in support of the port’s expansion strategy.

As part of the expansion, Damen’s client will increase its wharf in order to accommodate vessels up to 280 metres in length. For this, the port requires additional bollard pull. The ASD Tug 2411, with its 70 tonnes bollard pull, will replace two tugs from Port Nelson’s existing fleet.

The port have saidthey are pleased to be able to extend their relationship with Damen with the purchase of the new, still to be named ASD Tug 2411, so soon after purchasing the Damen ASD Tug 2310 Toia in 2016.

“Without exception our experience with the Toia has been a positive one,” said Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne. “And we look forward to working with Damen to ensure the future towage needs of our business continue to be met and enable us to continue to facilitate regional prosperity in the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough regions.”

Damen has built the ASD Tug 2411 according to its standardised philosophy of shipbuilding – which ensures clients of fast delivery of proven, reliable products. As such, it was available from stock, enabling Damen to deliver the vessel swiftly.

Though the vessels come as standard, Damen is always able to tailor them to meet the individual requirements of its clients. In this instance, this has involved the installation of a gangway to facilitate crew access in the up to 4-metre tides experienced in the port.

Sjoerd de Bruin, speaking on the occasion of the contract signing, said, “It is a privilege to support Port Nelson with the increased tug capabilities they require for their port expansion. We wish the port and all those working there safe and successful operations”.

New survey vessel showcases Blyth and DuroWipers expertise

Blyth Catamarans Ltd has handed over its largest vessel to date, an 18m survey vessel for the UK’s Swansea University, a project that has been in the making for nearly 14 months.

‘Mary Anning’ features a large A frame, dive lift and survey station for Swansea University. And it boasts hard-wearing DuroWipers pantographs, synonymous with the new Shannon class lifeboat builds.

“With this being our largest vessel built to date we are very proud of the outcome and are confident that Swansea University will be pleased with her,” said Stuart Davidsen, managing director, of Blyth Catamarans.

“Among many of its advanced features are its DuroWipers which is a reputable brand which has always given us excellent reliability for our customers for over 7 years. DuroWipers are the obvious choice because they offer a ‘linked marine wiper system’ where a second wiper is connected to the motor to give a wider wiper area, required for the larger front windscreen on the Mart Anning.”

Advanced specs

Among some of the other advanced specs onboard Mary Anning are two trawl winches, a moon pool with multi-beam deployment, dive lift and an external TV to show survey results.

The wheelhouse has a wet lab with TV, survey station, dinette with TV, workshop, bow fender for turbine transfer, raised helm to give 360-degree visibility and observation platform for bird watching.

Mr Davidsen said that the vessel has been constructed under dual coding for both MCA class VI to carry 26 students, plus standard coding for cat II 12+2.

Following successful sea trials, the vessel has achieved a top speed of 28+ knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots being powered by two MAN V8 1000hp engines with five blade props from Clements Engineering.

The Swansea University department of Biosciences will use the vessel for coastline surveys, mapping critical habitats, studying water quality, observing marine wildlife and deploying marine equipment.

Next up for Blyth Catamarans is a 14m survey vessel, 15m passenger vessel and 12m fishing vessel, currently under build, with a further two vessels also contracted.

In order to cater for building larger vessels in the future, the company recently opened an onsite factory featuring a 9m high building with gantry.

Florida based Rockledge Marine Services becomes the US agent for Walker Marine Design

Walker Marine Design (WMD) has today announced that Rockledge Marine Services have been signed as their agent across America. The news comes after the Florida based company and WMD have been working closely together for over a year.

Jim Cutts the engineering and business development director for Rockledge Marine Services said: “We have comprehensive experience in the marine engineering and manufacturing industry and are extremely excited to be officially working with WMD”

The wind farm sector in the US is due to significantly expand over the next few years and with both companies experience in this market, this partnership has come at a perfect time.

The business development director of WMD, Nikki Walker, said: “The wind farm sector is a fast-establishing market in America, so having a representative like Rockledge is a big advantage for us.”

WMD have already had two boats built in Asia, with a third currently under construction in the region. The American market has become the next business step for the company.

She continued, “We feel our designs, already well-proven within Europe will be ideal for the US market andas such we have been speaking with Jim for over a year about this partnership and it’s great to have him on board with the WMD team.”

WMD have also confirmed that Rockledge will be representing them at the International Work Boat Show starting on the 28 November 2018 in New Orleans.

AMI Marine giving back at Christmas with Cash for Kids

AMI Marine have partnered up with 'Cash for Kids' this year to give back to underprivileged children living in Hampshire.

Who are Cash for kids?
Cash for Kids responds to the needs of children in our communities, so they can live life to the full and realise their individual potential.

Based across 22 areas in the UK and advertised across radio stations. Cash for Kids support children aged 0-18 who are disabled, disadvantaged or suffering from abuse or neglect.

What have we been up to?
7 team members from AMI have volunteered at the warehouse. They worked alongside the charity organisers sorting and preparing the gifts that had come in. We sent them in 2 teams. Team 1 prepared and sorted gifts for 190 children! Our next team (who went when the warehouse had started getting busier) prepared and sorted gifts for 451 children!

Our new apprentice Sam, who joined team 2 said "It was a fantastic afternoon. I'm so happy that I was able to get involved and help the kids."

In addition to volunteering we also decided to not do a 'Secret Santa' this year. Instead decided to donate to 'Cash for Kids'. We were able to buy 10 backpacks and fill them with goodies.

Our Sales Support Manager Lauren said "When we volunteered it became apparent that there was a shortfall of gifts for teenage boys. We were also told that some children who move between homes do not always have suitable bags to carry their possessions in."

Following from Lauren's observations we decided to do our part to help these kids. We put together 10 backpacks filled with both a selection of daily necessities and some other little gifts to keep them occupied.

Company Director Martin Davidson said "We love getting involved in great local causes. As a father myself I understand the joy at Christmas and want every child to have that!"

Our Operations Manager Cheryl added "We had the best time. It was great fun and fulfilling. I also felt very emotional at how important these gifts are and the fantastic work being done."

Effortlessly stop Diesel Bug in its tracks

WHAT'S IN YOUR FUEL TANK?

Diesel powered equipment, such as heavy plant equipment, generators and emergency standby pumps etc. rely on having pure, clean diesel fuel in the tank. The ultra-fine tolerances of today's super efficient diesel engines mean they are extremely sensitive to any fuel contamination or fuel quality problems.

Fuel is easily contaminated through simple human error, poor fuelling practices and neglect. Water in fuel is bad news. We all know that water can wreck your fuel injection systems but it can also encourage the growth of "diesel bug" in fuel tanks – a well known phenomenon. A cocktail of bacteria and fungi that will live and thrive in water in your fuel tank, causing growth of slime and chunks of bio-mass which will easily clog your diesel engine filters and cause power failure.

It may sound extreme but some of the most powerful engines and generator systems have been brought to a standstill by something as simple as bacteria.

THE SOLUTION

The Aqua-Zorb water-free cell is a simple and effective means of removing water from the bottom of diesel, petrol, AVGas, Hydraulic and petroleum storage tanks. By just inserting into the tank. Aqua-Zorb uses a fabric sheave containing water absorbing formula which eliminates the need to drain fuel tanks to remove water. The cell can be easily replaced to constantly provide a method of maintaining the integrity of the oil, whether it is in storage storage tank or on a vehicle.

The absorbent in the Aqua-Zorb water-free cell is an inert, non-toxic chemical formulation designed to achieve maximum results. The formulation will not break down once mixed. The composition remains intact for the life of the cell which is one year. HOW IT WORKS
