Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam completes major maintenance programme on OSV Deep Arctic

Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam has bid farewell to the Diving Support Vessel Deep Arcticfollowing a significant maintenance stopover, a substantial proportion of which was spent in dry dock. It was an exceptionally complex project with a total of 2198 work permits issued, an indication of the large number of individual jobs that were completed and the number of stakeholders involved. The work was completed with zero hours lost to injuries and restricted work cases.

The 156-metre, TechnipFMC-ownedDeep Arctic came to Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm) primarily for a main class renewal (intermediate) docking and for maintenance including the renewal of the steel plates to her box coolers. To achieve thisthe yard removed 31 separate box coolers from the forward, midships and aft sea chests. The preparations needed to accomplish this involved the disconnection of all the associated piping on both the coolers and the anodes, the removal of any associated deck plates and benches, and the installation of lifting pad eyes above the box coolers where required. 

Following the secure and precise removal of the coolers according to a pre-prepared lifting plan, they were placed either on the floor of the dock, on the quayside, or into shipping crates specially fabricated by DSAm for transport to the owners’ own specialists. Once all the overhauls and inspections were completed and the coolers returned, the yard reinstalled them all. The works required renewing the box cooler steel plates included cropping the old sea chest plates and replacing them with new steel plates prefabricated in the DSAm steel workshop and machine shop. 

Once the works were complete, all the interior areas affected, including the ballast water tanks, forward tanks, coffer dam tanks and hull plates, were treated with a coatings programme. The yard also blasted and painted all the repaired sea chests and 16 additional forward sea chests.

Thrusters overhauled
Whilst the Deep Arcticwas in the dry dock, she also overwent a complete thruster overhaul including upgrades to her tunnel, retractable and Azimuth thrusters, six in total.  Her propeller shaft and centre line rudder also had their 10-yearly overhaul. These operations all took place in close collaboration with the Owner’s specialists Rolls Royce and OEM. Additional associated works included the fabrication of new piping for both tunnel thrusters, renewal of the lower gear units, repairs to the rudder stock actuator and the overhaul of the stern tube seal boxes. 

To finish off, the yard also performed a large number of works at considerable heights. These included repairs to the gangway and load tests on the accommodation ladder and platform. Maintenance was also done to the structures of cranes no.1 (400T) and no.2 (58T), which included the removal of rust and painting the main and navigation masts and the helideck support structure.

All the works were undertaken to TechnipFMC’s and DSAm’s exceptionally high safety standards, aided by the close cooperation and planning that took place between the Damen and TechnipFMC project teams. The carefully configured seven-man DSAm project team ensured that the yard had enough resources to meet the high demands of TechnipFMC, and it included three junior project managers plus one, fully project-dedicated safety officer, which is relatively unusual. Both teams also had a planner onboard to keep the works operating to schedule. The overall result was a project delivered on time and to the highest quality.

AMI Marine Seawork 2019 Roundup

We enjoyed a very successful Seawork exhibition this year, showcasing our NEW X-VHFR, X-MDR, our ECDIS and much more.

We also hosted a networking lunch and participated in the Women in Maritime event.

Our networking lunch was a massive success and was a brilliant opportunity for us to meet with existing and new customers from the UK South Coast and further afield.

We met up with representatives from Kelvin Hughes, MAIB and many more friends in the industry, enjoying a few drinks along the way.

Our team enjoyed exploring the show, discovering brands and equipment that compliments our own. 

We particularly enjoyed the Cardboard Boat Regatta, although we are still unable to persuade anyone in the office to take a dip in the Solent!!!

The Women in Maritime event was attended by our Director Martin Cox and our Marketing Manager Lucy Speed. It was great to see how many women are engaging with the maritime sector currently and that so many were at the show. We were informed about several networking opportunities for our staff to get involved with.

Also, as recruiters of new apprentices, we will definitely be using the complimentary resources for writing job adverts, as we hope to maintain our 50/50 gender balance.  We look forward to developing our relationship with Women in Maritime and expanding on the work already started.

Overall, a great show and we look forward to next year's event.

New Employee Stuart at Wardle Marine Services

Wardle Marine Services have been steadily growing over the past couple of years and with their appointment as Sole UK distributor for PMS Dock Marine, Oliver Wardle decided it was high time to expand their install team, and so set about finding a suitable candidate with relevant experience to join the burgeoning Wardle Marine workforce. We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Stuart Clarke, who has now been appointed ‘Install and Warehouse Assistant’ and has already proved himself, jumping in at the deep end, completing a number of different installs with Chris (Installation Manager) over the past couple of weeks, with fantastic feedback from clients. Stuart joins Wardle Marine from BC Construction, where he was a Construction Officer, specialising in refurbishments and renovations. Previous to this, he worked for AVS fencing, and constructing event spaces, altogether proving his construction and engineering skills that we need at Wardle Marine. With all his transferable skills and professional manner, he was immediately appointed and has proved himself as a great asset for our team. We look forward to expanding with him at our side.

Concordia Damen ships 18 hulls from Shanghai to Rotterdam

On Monday, 17th June, heavy-lift vessel Black Marlin departed Shanghai. On deck with eighteen Concordia Damen inland shipping vessel hulls and a Damen Crane Barge 6324, bound for Rotterdam. Concordia Damen regularly conducts such heavy-lift transportations as a means of providing its customers with cost-efficient vessels. 

The hulls and crane barge had been constructed at yards in China. They are scheduled to arrive in the Port of Rotterdam mid-August. Upon arrival the hulls will be towed to Concordia Damen and other local yards for outfitting and the Crane Barge to Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. 

The idea of constructing the hulls in China is to ensure a cost efficient product. However, with the market for these types of vessel being mostly found in Europe, it is important that repositioning the hulls is done in a manner which maintains this cost efficiency. 

Bert Duijzer, technical manager, Concordia Damen explains the logic behind heavy lift transportation, “Sending one large vessel, with many smaller ones, is far more efficient that sending multiple small vessels. This way we are able to pass on the cost efficiency we have gained in construction to our clients in Europe, at the same time as minimising the environmental footprint of our operations. 

“On this particular shipment, most of the hulls have already been purchased, though one of them will be placed on stock. In the way, this process also ensures our clients of a very fast delivery of their new vessel.”

The Damen Crane Barge, built for stock, will become available for a visit or demonstration from the end of August 2019.

Kaymac Marine and Civil Engineering Ltd. are announced winners of the Marine and Coastal Civil Engineering Exhibition M&CCE Best Project Award 2019

The M&CCE Best Project Award recognises companies who have made innovations and overcome challenges within the marine civil engineering industry. Kaymac were commended for challenges they faced during the works carried out at on the River Tawe Barrage maintenance project. The project comprised of three phases; scour repairs to spalling/deteriorating Quay wall above and below waterline, scour protection installation, refurbishment to the main Barrage lock gates and installation of new post and rail fencing.

The European Commercial Marine judges commented “The Kaymac Swansea Tawe Barrage project deployed a wide range of skill and services in adverse conditions, which were delivered on time and in budget. The project is a clear achievement and shows the depth of marine civil engineering offerings. Congratulations Kaymac!”

Cornish company wins the main award at the European Commercial Marine Awards 2019

WorkFloat, a self-propelled floating work platform that 'folds' up to tow behind a 4×4 on the road or slide into a standard shipping container, has won the main award at The European Commercial Marine Awards last week at the SeaWork 2019 trade show in Southampton. 

The award was presented to WorkFloat as industry experts on the judging panel felt it absolutely exemplified the innovative ethos and practical value which is at the heart of Seawork, and ingeniously fills a gap in the market. 

WHAT IS WORKFLOAT?

WorkFloat is a self-propelled, floating work platform that ‘folds’ up for easy and economical transportation. 

MARKET GAP: WorkFloat has been designed to bridge an identified gap in the market between small workboats (RIBs, dorys, small landing craft etc) that have limited lifting and carrying abilities; and larger, more expensive workboats and steel multicats that, whilst very capable, have limited and costly re-location options and require deep water, and a large crane or hoist, for launching and recovery. 

CONSTRUCTION:A metal space frame provides WorkFloat with its strength, and then utilises tough plastic floats for buoyancy. OPERATING AREA:With such fast and easy mobilisation, this ‘mini multicat’ can reach the parts other workboats can’t. Designed to work on lakes, reservoirs, ponds, rivers, canals, flooded land, and large puddles; as well as tidal estuaries, hard to reach coastal sites, conflict & disaster zones and the developing world coastline. 

TRANSPORT:Simply tow or ship it to where you need it in the world – then use local plant to self launch it on any suitable slipway or beach in under an hour. You then have a large, stable, self propelled work platform with lifting capabilities and all necessary paperwork to go about your commercial activity and get the job done. 

VERSATILE: This little vessel is all about versatility – it can be used for commercial diving, civils, bridge repairs, aquaculture, light dredging, oil response, disaster & flood relief, SAR, ferry (cars and passengers), survey work, sampling, drilling, superyacht support, military, and film work. 

STRONG: A bit like a worker ant, WorkFloat might be small and light but she’s incredibly strong. Lube Oil Filtration Solutions for 2-Stroke Engines

The system transports lube oil from the main tank to the engine. The system consists primarily of the supply pumps (redundant), pump protection filters, an automatic filter with a defined filtration rate, and a lube oil treatment system (optional). The lube oil is transported via the supply pumps, screened by the pump protection filters, through the automatic filter (fine filtration). The majority (approx. 95 %) of the filtered lube oil is supplied directly to the engine. The rest of the oil is filtered even further by an additional automatic filter and is used for the hydraulic power supply in two-stroke engines (common rail).

Collett’s In-House Engineering for Midlands Cold Box

Utilising Scheuerle clamp systems, with in-house designed transport brackets, Collett deliver the first of three cold box sections to the West Midlands.

Due to the dimensions of the 4.4m high, 35m long cargo, Collett were required to engineer a bespoke solution to deliver the first, and largest, of the three cargoes. 

Flat trailers and turntable technology would provide an unsuitable option as the loaded cargo would prove unable to traverse the UK motorway network, therefore, Collett began developing a solution in which the cargo would be suspended between two multi-axle bogie trailers. 

Employing their clamp trailer, which is predominantly used for the transportation of wind turbine tower sections, would provide the necessary hydraulic capabilities.  This would allow the Collett Team to raise and lower the height of the load as the route demanded but would require additional modification to engineer a suitable system for securing the load to the trailer.

Engineered in meticulous detail, Collett designed a bracket system to secure the load to the trailers.  This bracket and pin system would attach to the cold box, providing an anchoring point for the clamp to secure to the load.  Each of the brackets, pins, adaptors, box sections and lugs were fully BS EN:1993 and PD 970:2005 compliant, and would allow Collett to securely transport the loaded 45m long rigid cargo the 110 miles from collection to delivery.  Once design of the system was complete, and having undertaken 3D Solidworkssimulations to analyse the behaviour of the components, fabrication of each element began.

Whilst Collett’s Engineering Team manufactured the loading solution, the Collett Consulting Team analysed the route, undertaking extensive swept path analysis reports to ensure the safe delivery of the 76 Tonne cargo.  Due to the length of the cargo and loaded vehicle, numerous sections of the route demanded street furniture removal, road widening, parking restrictions, tree pruning and manual steering requirements.  This also included full motorway closures to allow the combination to undertake contraflow manoeuvres and continue on the route.

Employing their in-house designed and engineered bracket system, Collett loaded the cold box to their clamp trailer and set off on their 110 mile journey.  Departing early afternoon the Collett Team exited Eggborough under the escort of their Code of Practice pilot cars and accompanied by Humberside Police.  With the movement through South Yorkshire taking place at night, the convoy parked on the M62 at Hensall, and as darkness fell Collett began the evening stage.  Having been met by Leicester Police the following morning, the Heavy Transport Team completed the final stage of their journey, from Junction 28 of the M1 safely arriving at the delivery site.

With the largest of the three cargoes safely delivered to site, the two smaller 29m and 25m loads followed the same route over the proceeding days successfully completing the project.

Wight Shipyard Co hybrid patrol vessel – Big Reveal at Seawork 2019

UK shipbuilder Wight Shipyard Co (WSC)’s newbuild hybrid vessel unveiled at Seawork 2019. Peter Morton CEO and Joanna Daly COO of WSC will host Nusrat Ghani MP for a tour of the vessel before she officially opens Seawork 2019.
Setting new standards in the patrol and pilot vessels the 9m Hybrid is a step change for operators including port and river authorities, Police, MOD and Royal Navy who need to meet strict new pollution standards.

Port authorities, harbour and river patrols need to keep pace with the changing environmental requirements seeking solutions and vessels that can operate zero emissions but switch easily between variable speeds when necessity arises. 

“The Chasewell is the first 9m Hybrid Patrol vessel to be built in the UK. This revolutionary vessel sets new standards in hybrid vessel design and build and is fitting that it comes from WSC. SMS – Shoreham Port Gears Up For Ship Repair

The SMS Group, one of the country’s leading ship repairers and marine engineering services providers, has partnered with the Shoreham Port Authority to provide dedicated alongside ship repair wharfage, and to increase awareness of its Adur dry dock facility.

SMS has an enviable reputation as specialists in ship repair, marine engineering and major fabrication projects in the Commercial Marine, Defence and Superyachts sectors.  

The business also operates, in-house, a diving and sub-surface marine engineering division.

This partnership expands on the existing relationship with Shoreham Port to promote the use of its 50m x 10m Adur dry dock to SMS’s customer base along the South Coast.

Nicholas Warren, SMS Commercial Director, said: “In addition to our recent partnership with the Hythe Shipyard in Southampton Water this goes someway to further geographically extend our low-cost operating model.

“In addition to the dry dock we’ve now got 110m of quayside (max draft 6.7m) with shore-side space and good access for cranage.  

“Shoreham is the perfect setup for short, sharp, emergency alongside repairs or longer-term planned alongside refits.  

“With many customers opting for biannual dockings the quantum of works that we, as a Group, complete annually alongside, is definitely increasing so this partnership has to be good news for our customer base.”

He added: “SMS’s recent growth comes from developing various partnership approaches to business, and by continually putting the customer’s aspirations first.

“Shoreham allows us to extend our reach that little further and work in genuine partnership with both the Port and many of our local customers.”

The Port operates a 24/7/365 operation and both the Port and the team at SMS will do all that they can to accommodate the varying ship repair requirements of all customers.

With both parties committed to the agreement, Shoreham Port is now open for commercial ship repair works and alongside refits.  

The agreement was signed at the Seawork International maritime conference and exhibition in Southampton yesterday. (JUNE 11)
