PSM Working with Terasaki in Singapore

PSM Instrumentation were recently approached by the Singapore division of their Partners Terasaki who'd been awarded the contract to undertake a complete MCMS upgrade of the Machinery Control and Monitoring System onboard the chemical tanker, MT Caspia. During the installation phase of the project it became apparent that the originally installed radar transmitters were not working and in need of urgent replacement.

PSM quickly identified that their Scanrad Radar Transmitter would provide an ideal replacement for the vessel, together with custom made adaptors for mounting and specifically produced protection hoses and glanding to suit existing connections.  Terasaki confirmed the order and PSM urgently manufactured the entire package within a week, whereby it met the vessel at its first port of call after the retrofit.

The Radar transmitters were then installed and commissioned while the vessel was en-route to its first cargo loading post refit. The feedback from Terasaki was that the installation all went to plan and that the vessel owners are very happy with the highly accurate performance.  They are now considering similar upgrades to the monitor systems on their other vessels.

This is just one example of PSM delivering custom made solutions in a very short time-period, whilst providing full support during the commissioning stage.

Damen Anchor & Chain Factory delivers two anchors for the luxury yacht sector

Marking a return to production for the high-end yacht industry, Damen Anchor & Chain Factory (AKF) has delivered two galvanized yacht anchors. AKF carried out the fabrication, Class approved testing, and galvanization of the anchors – each weighing 1080kg – within two weeks of receiving the order.

Damen AKF is well known for its large stock of anchors and chains for the commercial shipping industry, but its scope of activities go further than that. The company’s expertise also extends to the manufacture of custom-built towing and heavy lift components, which is supported by the much-respected ISO 3834 welding certification.

Furthermore, AKF personnel possesses the craftsmanship and knowledge from the times that the company produced anchors in-house. It is this wealth of experience that is now being drawn upon in response to the increasing demand from clients in the yacht industry for high-end quality anchors made in the Netherlands.

All in-house
“We decided to return to our roots and start producing yacht anchors here in Schiedam, the Netherlands. Production of yacht anchors is for a large part about the small details, and in-house production allows us to be on top of the whole process,” says Laurens van Gelder, Managing Director of AKF.

Production of these two yacht anchors began with delivery of the steel plating from metalworking company Kroon Metal Technology. “And then, within one week of ordering the material, the anchors were ready for Class inspection, weld checking, and proof load testing on our own test benches before delivery to the client,” Mr Van Gelder adds.

“We have four Lloyds-approved test benches for this – where we can carry out proof and break loading from 5 to 2,000 tonnes.”

When fabricating a product for the yacht sector, the quality of the finished product goes well beyond mere functionality. “Looks are obviously very important, so these anchors have a high quality hot-dipped galvanized finish.”

SP Load Cells Integral to Floating Crane Software Package

Polish marine electronics integration specialist Navinord has installed a state-of-the-art software package that includes four Straightpoint (SP) load cells on a 440t capacity floating crane, which is currently based near the Third Millennium John Paul II Bridge spanning the Martwa Wisła River in Gdansk, Poland.

Its new owner renovated the crane, originally named “Consulado De Bilbao Dos” when it was built in Bilbao, Spain in 1971, last year. It is now bi-located at Marine Projects Ltd.’s shipyards in Gdansk and approx. 20km further north in Gdynia. The crane is currently known as “Conrad Consul”, taking half of its name from Marine Projects’ daughter company Conrad S.A., which specialises in the production and delivery of complete luxury sail and motor yachts.

Consul boasts two pairs of hooks, two of 100t capacity at the front and two bigger 200t capacity units behind them. However, its overall capacity is only 440t as, while four hooks can be utilised for a single lift, not all of them can lift to their full capacity at the same time. On each hook is an SP 25t capacity Radiolink plus load cell, each of which was installed during the major refurbishment of the crane last summer.

Navinord’s load monitoring system—LMSmk1—is capable of gathering data from up to 16 strain gauges, explained Piotr CywiÅ„ski, marine electronics specialist at Navinord, also headquartered near Gdansk.

Straighpoint, industry leaders in marine lifting equipment, and, in addition to the four SP units, two other devices feedback on boom line forces. All devices feed data to a master computer that can be read remotely, over the internet, and / or in Consul’s cab. The system also provides error notifications; generation of information graphs covering designated time periods; and customisable interface colours.

There are many other features of the crane itself besides, said CywiÅ„ski. Consul is equipped with navigation and communication devices, primarily for use in marine salvage, ship emergency response service (SERS), and wreck removal applications. Meanwhile, CCTV facilitates lifts out of the line of sight when it is necessary to work, say, inside a cargo haul or when another vessel might be obscuring the operator’s vision.

Consul is powered by two Voith Schneider propellers that provide propulsion and steering in one unit, while a new generator, power converters, chain blocks, lifting ropes, glass wheelhouse, and steering consoles were among other new installations.

There are two other, similar floating cranes in the region—the 330t capacity Maja and 100t capacity Conrad Goliath (the latter also belongs to Marine Projects)—but Consul is the largest. While it is primarily engaged in lifting activities in Gdansk and Gdynia, it is also capable of open sea voyages, making ports elsewhere in Poland and Lithuania accessible.

Offshore Industry Welcomes Straightpoint’s DNV Approval

Straightpoint (SP) has received a DNV GL Type Approval Certificate, acknowledging that its equipment meets the rigorous standards of the global quality assurance and risk management company for their use offshore.

The certificate was issued in mid-March and confirms that SP’s Loadlink plus, Radiolink plus and Wirelink plus products comply with DNVGL-ST-0378, the standard for offshore and platform lifting appliances. Offshore purchasing decision makers can have even greater confidence therefore in the load cells’ performance on all vessels classed by DNV.

David Ayling, director at SP, said: “We already had 100% faith in our products’ ability to perform even in the world’s most demanding industries; that’s been proven time and again. However, what DNV [approval] does is verify to end users that our entire operation, from the smelting of the aluminium we use to application of product on site, meets the requirements of an organisation that serves to safeguard life, property, and the environment.”

SP has been striving towards DNV approval for 18 months, following the results of a questionnaire put to key partners that revealed overwhelming support for proceeding with the application. Additionally, other below-the-hook equipment suppliers—notably, spreader beam manufacturer Modulift—had also endorsed its value in competitive tenders and other situations.

The approval complements SP’s comprehensive range of ATEX and IECEx products, which meet Zone 0, 1 and 2 hazardous area classification. Ayling noted that in many cases both DNV and explosion proof status will both be applicable, especially in the oil and gas market, which is a major consumer of SP’s force measurement technologies. Through Kyle Milne, technical sales engineer, and Aaron Orsak, regional business development manager, based in offshore hotbeds in Aberdeen and Houston respectively, SP is well placed to leverage such accreditations.

Ayling said: “Kyle and Aaron are reporting back positively from their geographies and we’re now even better equipped to take the opportunities increased offshore activity might create. As BP, Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and others proceed with projects, it’s reassuring to have a product range that, first, meets their operational criteria and, second, pre-qualifies against any likely tender specifications.”

SP will raise the profile of its DNV approval at a number of trade events throughout the year, starting with the Norwegian Society of Lifting Technology (NSLT) and Offshore Mechanical Handling Equipment Committee (OMHEC)’s 23rd International Offshore Cranes & Lifting Conference, which takes place in Milne’s hometown next month (April). There, new display banners and literature will be part of a product centric exhibit showcasing a myriad of relevant technologies, including the Loadlink plus, Radiolink plus and Wirelink plus.

Wight Shipyard Co wins second export order with two fast ferries for Mexico

Export orders continue to advance Wight Shipyard Co’s reputation as a world leading fast ferry builder with a multiple vessel contract from Mexico’s largest ferry operator. 

Until now Ultramar has built all its high speed ferries in the United States and the order for two 37 metre ferries, the first British vessels to be built for Mexico in living memory, is more positive news for the Isle of Wight shipyard following a highly successful 2017. 

At the end of August last year Red Funnel confirmed an order for a second 41 metre high speed passenger ferry, followed soon after when Scotland’s Jacobite Cruises placed an order for a 21 metre day cruise catamaran for Loch Ness. More recently, a contract was inked for a 39 metre high speed craft for passenger services between Vienna and Bratislava. 

“This order for Ultramar really is very satisfying as it continues our move into international markets,” says Wight Shipyard CEO Peter Morton. 

“Our reputation for high quality ferries is spreading and we are delighted to be awarded the contract to build our largest ferries yet. Ultramar operates a fleet of ferries between Cancún, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel ports in the Quintana Roo Peninsula. 

“Ultramar is also hosting the annual conference of ferry industry body Interferry to be held this year in Cancún during October, so we are looking forward to joining with them at this important event,” he says. 

“We are very proud to start a relationship with Wight Shipyard Co and we are certain that it will be a long and happy one for all,” says Germán Orozco, Chief Executive of Ultramar. 

Designed by Incat Crowther, the Ultramar twins will each provide accommodation for 459 passengers over three decks. Passengers will board the new craft on the main deck forward and aft, where a bright and airy cabin is capable of seating up to 169 passengers. 

A kiosk providing a range of snacks and refreshments will be provided on the centreline in the middle of this cabin. On the external foredeck seating is provided for 24 passengers while located aft is a generous luggage space area and toilet block. 

Above, the mid deck is accessed from a centre staircase in the main cabin. External seating will be provided for 120 passengers while aft of the elevated wheelhouse interior seating is available for 24 passengers. Two external staircases aft lead to a roof deck where 122 seated passengers can enjoy commanding sea views. 

In the hulls, the engine rooms are designed to provide crews with maximum access with all machinery arranged in the same space. The engine rooms are designed so the engines, two MTU 12V4000 M63 marine diesels, can be removed without slipping the vessel or damaging the superstructure or hull.

Karachi Shipyards & Engineering Works delivers two Damen Stan Patrol 1605 FRP patrol boats to Pakistan Customs

Pakistan Customs has taken delivery of two Damen Stan Patrol 1605 FRP patrol boats. The handover ceremony took place on 10th March at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW). The celebration was attended by distinguished guests including Dr Miftah Ismail, advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance, Revenue & Economic Affairs, Mr. Iftikhar Ahmed, Collector Pakistan Customs, Rear Admiral Syed Hasan Nasir Shah, Managing Director of KS&EW and Mrs. Ardi Stoios-Braken, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. 

The vessels were built by KS&EW with technical and material support from Damen. The entire project took just eight months and was completed successfully thanks to the high level of cooperation and trust between the two partners. The patrolling boats shall be used for monitoring and enforcement activities in Pakistan’s territorial waters.

KS&EW received the order for the two Stan Patrol 1605 FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) craft from the Pakistan Customs in July last year. The bid was supported by Damen’s Technical Cooperation (DTC) programme, which cooperates with shipyards around the world.

Damen supplied prefabricated material kits along with the hulls to KS&EW. Knowledge transfer was also an integral part of the DTC programme, and for this project KS&EW production staff went to Damen Antalya for training in working with FRP by Damen’s experienced trainers. Technicians from Damen Antalya also travelled to Karachi to transfer knowledge during the production and testing phases.

These are the first Damen vessels to be built for Pakistan Customs, however KS&EW and Damen have a long history of working together. This has resulted in the delivery of four Damen Stan Tug 1605s for the Pakistan Navy and two more of the same type to the Karachi Port Trust, plus a Damen Multi Cat 1908, also for the Karachi Port Trust. The delivery of the two SPa 1605 FRPs to Pakistan Customs completes this order, however the agency is considering an expansion of their fleet in the future.

Albwardy Damen receives Superbrands 2018 award

Albwardy Damen, the joint venture shipyard in Sharjah, UAE, between the Damen Shipyards Group and UAE-based Albwardy Investment, has received a prestigious Superbrands 2018 Award from Superbrands Worldwide, the world’s largest independent arbiter of branding. It pays tribute to the strongest and most valuable brands in the world through its publications and national marketing programmes. The winners of these awards were selected by the International Arbitration Board of the Award, made up of more than 4,000 marketing experts from the UAE business community.

The Hamriyah Free Zone in which Albwardy Damen operates won the Superbrands UAE Award for 2018 for the second time in a row. Based on its recommendations, a number of other companies within the zone including Albwardy Damen also received Superbrand awards.

Albwardy Damen received its Superbrands Status and Superbrands Certificate from the Superbrands Council at a grand event held in the Hamriyah Free Zone in early February. The awards ceremony was attended by representatives from Superbrands Middle East, a number of senior officials from the Hamriyah Free Zone Authority (HFZA), and representatives from the companies that operate in the HFZA that had also won awards.

Albwardy Damen brings Damen quality and technology to the UAE. The main yard is located in the Hamriyah Free Zone, Sharjah, and offers the highest standards of modern ship construction and repair. Among its many facilities it features a covered build hall, a 5,200 tonne ship lift and eight dry berths, each 125 metres in length. In 2017, it opened a new office and workshop facility in Dubai Maritime City to operate alongside its other facilities in Sharjah, Al Jadaf and Fujairah.

The Infield Support Vessel (ISV) RT Raven was built at Albwardy Damen to a Robert Allen design and is a customized, 46 metre, DP2, 100-tonne bollard pull Rotortug® for offshore support. One of the most powerful tugs ever built in the UAE, the vessel is operated by Perth-based KT Maritime Services Australia Pty Ltd.
