New additions to the London transport network named

MBNA Thames Clippers has announced the names of the two new passenger boats joining its growing river transport network operating across London. Launching this summer Mercury Clipper and Jupiter Clipper will provide additional capacity across the River Thames network.

The two newest boats swiftly follow the addition of two boats in late 2015, in total adding an additional 30 per cent capacity in two years to the MBNA Thames Clippers fleet. When the two new boats enter service, MBNA Thames Clippers will be the biggest commercial passenger fleet operating solely in English waters.

To name the new boats over 1,100 children entered a competition with Fun Kids radio station. Lucky eleven year old Lennon from Scotland was crowned as the winner and together with his family will be joining the MBNA Thames Clippers team in London this summer for the official naming ceremonies.

Since the foundation of the business in 1999, MBNA Thames Clippers has hosted over 34 million passengers on their network of 15 boats. The addition of two new vessels will see this number soar to over 38.5 million by the end of 2017.

Both Mercury Clipper and Jupiter Clipper began construction six months ago by the Wight Shipyard Co at East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Representing an investment worth over £6.3million, the order has seen the creation of 75 new jobs across the Isle of Wight and London, and the involvement of over 100 businesses in the South of England as part of the delivery supply chain. The finalisation of the two new fast ferries is the largest ever order for the recently rebranded Wight Shipyard Co.

The first boat, Mercury Clipper will be launched onto the water at East Cowes in June and conduct endurance trials later that month before making the journey to London for the official launch. Jupiter Clipper will follow shortly afterwards.

MBNA Thames Clippers is London’s leading river boat service, connecting many of the capital’s top attractions and providing passengers with the opportunity to take in the iconic London skyline from the river along the way such as The Houses of Parliament, London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe, Tower of London and on to Greenwich for the Old Royal Naval College and Royal Museums Greenwich.

Marine goes ‘Green’ for Seawork 2017 – securing the future of your business with hybrid/electric technology.

With hybrid/electric technology a hot topic within the industry right now, operators are looking for cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions to ensure the future of their business. This year at Seawork, propulsion and driveline experts, Marine and Industrial Transmissions will be showcasing the Transfluid HM560 Hybrid and Electric driveline system, suitable for marine applications.

The Transfluid solution has been developed to suit commercial applications such as: workboats, windfarm crew transfer boats, pilot vessels, patrol vessels and is also suitable for a range of pleasure craft operations.

Within Europe, the technology has already been heavily adopted, with over 10 boatyards installing the system into their applications. To date, the hybrid module has been installed into 13 single engine craft and five twin-engine craft, with German manufacturer BAVARIA choosing the Transfluid solution as a partner to launch its first displacement boat with hybrid propulsion.

The HM560 module is engineering simplicity at its best. Designed to be fitted on any internal combustion engine with a suitable SAE flywheel and housing, and to any type of SAE standard transmission. The “electric machine” has a double function, working as an electric motor in the electric mode and as an electric generator in battery charging mode. The HM560 model can also be turned 360 degrees to achieve the best position onboard the vessel.

The system allows the user to work in three specific modes. Electric propulsion, to drive or sail at zero emissions in absolute silence. Engine Propulsion, using the electric machine as a generator to recharge batteries, and booster, which allows the electric motor during acceleration to assist the engine – providing extra torque to the driveline.

The engine power approved for the HM series can go up to 1100 kW (1475 hp) while the electric motor power can reach 300 kW (400 hp) by using four heads as power take-offs to fit the nominal 75 kW (100 hp) electric machines.
To install the HM system, all that is needed is an additional few hundred millimetres between the diesel engine and the transmission, allowing the unit to be fitted on new vessels or installed as a retrofit.

The flexibility of the system allows users to install on any head of an electric motor not in use, and supply hydraulic or electric appliances for onboard facilities. The HM systems have a series of SAE standard power take-offs to install pumps or any other accessories normally used on vessels.

The HM system can be easily fitted to any transmission system such as: mechanical or power shift variable speed drives, hydrostatic transmissions, marine gear boxes and cardan shaft.

For 2017 ‘Green’ solutions are high on the agenda for MIT, who will along with the Transfluid hybrid system, also discuss the Twin Disc ‘QuickShift EC300DP, power commander electronic control system complete with Dynamic Positioning interface’.

The Twin Disc Dynamic Positioning interface, paired with QuickShift marine transmissions (MGX series) and the EC300DP power commander electronic control system is a game changer for delivering high-performance DP. The Twin Disc solution is available at a lower cost than standard shaft designs, and positions fleets for huge cost savings by allowing instantaneous, shock-less and virtually constant forward and reverse shifting – keeping supply vessels on station. Drivelines can execute directional reversals at variable torque levels and reduced engine speeds more than 30 times per minute maintaining fuel efficient engine speeds even with low prop rpm.

The Twin Disc QuickShift transmissions and EC300DP controls are compatible with DP0 – DP1 – DP2 systems with standard shaftline propulsion and DP interface control packages.

MIT will also be discussing standard marine drivelines and propulsion systems from across the product portfolio, including marine transmissions, single and multiple pump drives, standard and hybrid marine transmissions, anti-vibration systems, boat steering systems and air compressors.

90 years for Damen

Damen is celebrating nine decades of operations in the shipbuilding industry. From small beginnings in the 1920s, the company has grown into a renowned maritime service provider that employs 9,000 people. With Dutch roots, Damen’s expansion has been global. This growth can be viewed in terms of its yards, service hubs and other subsidiary companies as well as a globally-operating client base. For 90 years, Damen’s vessel designs have successfully served customers operating on all over the world.

Damen was originally established by two brothers, Jan and Rien Damen, in 1927. From facilities located on the banks of the River Merwede in Hardinxveld, the Netherlands, they managed the growing firm into a well-respected business.

Production progress

When Kommer Damen took over in 1969, he introduced numerous changes to the ship fabrication process. Advances such as modular construction techniques and series production of standard designs resulted in considerable increases in efficiency. Damen’s clients could benefit from shortened delivery times and flexible vessel configurations.

The subsequent growth since the late 1960s has been as swift as it was broad. The company’s worldwide coverage developed with the acquisition of foreign yards and the establishment of dedicated service centres. The vessel portfolio has grown too – today the company’s vessels serve an ever-evolving range of maritime sectors.

A team performance
Looking back at Damen’s success over the years, Chairman Kommer Damen highlights the contribution made by the company’s personnel: "I am honoured to celebrate 90 years of Damen. What started as a small team, has grown into a global company. And yet – we have achieved this while still retaining our family values.

Birthday celebrations
Damen is marking its 90th anniversary in numerous ways over the coming months. An interactive platform, this website will allow visitors to upload and share their own photos and recollections about Damen.

A special exhibition illustrating many of the key moments in Damen’s history will be on display at the company’s headquarters in Gorinchem, the Netherlands. This will also be the location for the Damen Workboat Festival, which will also focus on the 90 year celebrations. Open to clients and industry partners, this event will take place on 5th October 2017.

And, last but not least, the company’s annual magazine will feature several articles that will take a retrospective look at some of the most important and interesting milestones of the last 90 years.

Looking forward
With a view to forthcoming decades, it is essential to note that Damen is still very much a family-orientated business. Kommer Damen’s four children all play significant roles in operations: Arnout Damen is Chief Commercial Officer, Rose Damen is Commercial Director at Amels, Annelies Damen manages the corporate properties portfolio, and Bear Damen recently directed the company’s corporate film.

Never a company to rest on its laurels, Damen has always been defined by its constant forward-thinking strategies. Successful sea trials for Australian MATV

Damen Shipyards Group has announced the successful completion of sea trials of the Multi-role Aviation Training Vessel (MATV) MV Sycamore. The sea trials included testing of all on-board military systems. Following final vessel handover, MV Sycamore will perform diverse training and support duties for the Royal Australian Navy.

In addition to the more traditional elements of sea trials such as manoeuvring and speed tests, the MV Sycamore was put through her paces with an extensive testing programme of all on-board military systems. This included testing of the air traffic radar, flight deck lighting and firefighting, flight deck communication systems and helicopter traverse installation procedures.

The results of the sea trials were successful. All systems and processes of the vessel were accepted by representatives of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Helicopter training tool

"We are proud to hear that the MV Sycamore has passed her first tests with flying colours," says Damen Sales Director Asia Pacific Roland Briene. "Based on Damen’s successful and proven OPV series, the MATV is a very versatile ship."

The chief role of the vessel will be to provide a training platform for all possible helicopter-related operations, such as helicopter deck landings and take off, helicopter (in-flight) refuelling operations and air traffic control.

Additional humanitarian role

However, Damen’s versatile MATV design will enable the Royal Australian Navy to accomplish numerous other secondary tasks also. To this end, the MV Sycamore will be able to undertake torpedo and mine recovery operations, navigation training, dive support, Officer Sea Familiarisation, target towing and consort duties as well as unmanned aerial vehicle support.

Furthermore, the 94-metre long vessel has a large storage capacity, which gives her the potential to be mobilised in humanitarian relief operations.

The coming weeks will see the MV Sycamore being prepared for her maiden voyage to her home port of Sydney, Australia, where she is expected to arrive at the end of May.

Talking about the future of Damen’s activities in Australia, Mr Briene comments: "We are making headway towards our ambitions of building further vessels for the Australian Navy, having recently submitted out tender for the SEA 1180 Program. It is our intention to work in close concert with local industry for the project, building not only the required vessels, but a sustainable shipbuilding industry for Australia with strong export potential."

Ocean Zephyr Sale to A1 Offshore Solutions

GRS Global Renewables Shipbrokers, OWS Off-Shore Wind Solutions and A1 Offshore Solutions announce the Sale of the DP2 Walk-to-Work Vessel OCEAN ZEPHYR.

GRS has developed and arranged the sale of OCEAN ZEPHYR (incl. Ampelmann A Type) from Emden based OWS Off-Shore Wind Solutions to Denmark based A1 Offshore Solutions. The delivery took place on the 24th of March 2017 in Emden and the vessel will continue a charter for a German Wind Farm under its well-known name OCEAN ZEPHYR.

The OCEAN ZEPHYR is the first DP2 Walk-to-Work Vessel in the fleet of A1 Offshore Solutions. Her long solid track record and proven capability over the last four years within the offshore wind business matches perfectly with the excellent track record of the new owner A1 Offshore Solutions and their existing fleet of PSVs trading currently mainly on German Wind Farm projects.

OWS Off-Shore Wind Solutions has been very happy with the proceedings of the sale and with the performance of Global Renewables Shipbrokers as well as with the buyers. “We are happy that the GRS driven Tender Sale Process could obtain this high interest in the market for our divestment of the Ocean Zephyr”, said Sellers Management. “This purchase is part of our response to our customer’s demands for more high quality Walk-to-Work vessels”, says A1 Offshore Solutions MD Tom Nielsen.

Even though that GRS have already booked in a long term charter for A1 and the OCEAN ZEPHYR during the next five years (Summer Season) the vessel and its permanently installed Ampelmann A Type will also be made available to other interested charterers. Damen Shipyards Group submits tender for Australian OPV

Damen Shipyards Group has submitted a tender for the SEA 1180 Phase 1 Project to deliver twelve Offshore Patrol Vessels to the Royal Australian Navy. To demonstrate its commitment to on time and within specification delivery Damen submitted its response early.

Damen has teamed with ASC Forgacs Shipbuilding, a joint venture established to build the initial two ships in South Australia and further 10 in Western Australia, to compete for the foundation project of Australia’s continuous Naval shipbuilding enterprise. The joint venture is already investing in infrastructure at the Henderson Shipbuilding Precinct in Western Australia in preparation for the OPV construction to move to WA.

Damen, with almost 100 vessels operating in Australia already, has extensive experience providing vessels that are suitable for local conditions and is fully committed to the long-term integration with Australian Shipbuilding. Key tenets of the bid include maximising investment in local industries and businesses to establish a long term capability; investment in the training of a future workforce including those transitioning from other industries; and assisting the Australian Government to prepare to build future frigates and submarines in SA. The proven Damen design being offered uses innovative technology to improve seakeeping, reduce running costs and decrease whole of life sustainment costs.

54 North Maritime Training

Whitby has a wealth of maritime history going back hundreds of years, including connections with the whaling, cargo and fishing industries.

54 North Maritime Training was established in 2002 with the aim of delivering quality safety training to new entrants to the workboat industry, as well as further enhancing the skills of existing seafarers.

The company is a member of the National Workboat Association, and is very proud to be successfully delivering the Level 2 Diploma in Maritime Studies (Workboats Pathway) to the workboat industry. This level 2 apprenticeship programme is very comprehensive and serves as an excellent introduction to young people aged between 16 – 24 years who strive for a career in the maritime industry. New entrants are recruited from a wide geographical area to study at our dedicated training facility in Whitby.

This first-class apprenticeship course is made up of a mixture of both academic and practical hands-on learning. Each student is employed by a workboat company, and sent to Whitby for 10 weeks to learn the theoretical aspect of the course, the remainder of the course is spent onboard their company vessel building up a wealth of practical skills. Once qualified successful apprentices receive a portfolio of maritime safety certificates, as well as a comprehensive sea going logbook.

54 North Maritime Training continues to be a centre of excellence within the Workboat industry, providing essential safety training to any person wishing to start a career at sea. Scandlines ensures safety on ferries with Roxtec transits

In order to ensure fire protection and water-tightness, before and after a fire, ferry operator Scandlines in Denmark replaced all other kinds of pipe seals on the recently built hybrid ferries M/V Berlin and M/V Copenhagen with Roxtec transits.

"We chose Roxtec as overall supplier of cable and pipe seals because we had so many different pipe penetrations and retrofits to handle. The bulkheads must withstand 2.5 bar water pressure, and with Roxtec we covered all our needs for quality and flexibility," says Joachim Lund, Dualofficer at Scandlines. "We optimise safety by selecting Roxtec as suppler of all transits."

As Roxtec provided full documentation on sealing and insulation requirements and supplied drawings including all needed types of approvals, Scandlines felt very confident in their choice.

Scandlines also uses Roxtec seals instead of traditional cable glands in the cabinets in the engine room. The shipping company wants to increase quality in general, and specifically for the fire-fighting system.

"Safety is extremely important for passenger lines. We invest to be sure that all cable and pipe transits are in order and that we meet all safety regulations," says Fini A. Hansen, Coordinating Superintendent at Scandlines.

Scandlines will continue to use Roxtec transits all over their ferries. Roxtec seals are fire rated to marine standards (A60). The estimated cost of a fire on board a ferry is 134,000 euro per minute.

NEW INDUSTRY AWARDS
Formerly the Innovations Awards, new for 2017 are the Seawork International & Maritime Journal European Commercial Marine Awards (ECMA), which will be presented at Seawork International on the evening of the 13th June.
The European Commercial Marine Awards (ECMA) will embrace the Innovation Awards, incorporating the Spirit of Innovation trophy, plus the Lifetime Achievement award, as well as the Maritime Professional of the Year and Maritime Sustainability awards.
