Join the Albwardy Damen Experience Day on 28 September

Thursday, 28th September 2017

Visit the new-build and ship repair facilities in Sharjah, UAE, and participate in seminars and on-the-water demonstrations

Albwardy Damen will once again be holding an Experience Day at its shipyard in Sharjah, UAE, immediately following the three-day Seatrade Middle East event taking place in Abu Dhabi. The Experience Day is open to all those interested in innovative and high-quality workboats, and during the day guests will have the opportunity to tour the new-build and maintenance facilities, attend a range of seminars and enjoy on-the-water demonstrations of various Damen vessels.

On-the-water demonstrations and seminars
Guests attending the Experience Day will be able to inspect and experience other Damen vessels including tugs, additional classes of crew supply vessels and a high-speed interceptor. During the day there will also be a number of seminars that guests are welcome to attend. Topics under discussion will include crew boats and crew transfers, harbour and terminal operations, rotor tugs, dredging, customer finance and simulator training.

Delivery ceremony for Damen FCS 4008 AMPI
The highlight of the day will be the 1200 noon delivery ceremony for the new Damen FCS 4008, named AMPI. This will be the first of two identical vessels for the Dubai-based Marine Core & Charter LLC (marinec2.com), an integrated offshore support and marine services company that manages and operates a wide range of workboats, tugs and barges.

The contract for the two Damen Fast Crew Suppliers was placed just two months previously and the protocol for the delivery of the first was signed yesterday on the Damen stand at the Seatrade Offshore Middle East Exhibition in Abu Dhabi. As part of the signing, Mr Pascal Slingerland of Damen Shipyards Group presented Mr Adib Abdel Massih, Chief Executive Officer of Marine Core & Charter, with a scale model of the FCS 4008 to mark the event.

The FCS 4008 is a recently introduced class of Damen crew boat in the DAMEN SEA AXE family. 41-metres in length, its steel hull ensures strength while its aluminium superstructure keeps the weight down and allows it reach speeds of up to 28 knots. AMPI has industrial-grade seating inside for 90 personnel and the 150m² aft deck has ample space for containers and other equipment. Damen's famous 'axe bow' design ensures excellent sea-keeping in a wide range of weather conditions, ensuring that personnel arrive at their destinations in good shape.

AMPI and her sister ship AMIA will be used for the long-distance delivery of crew and equipment for an oil and gas major operating in the Gulf. However the FCS 4008 design is also ideal for other operations including safety stand-by duties, security/patrol missions and they can be even outfitted as dedicated, high-speed, oil recovery vessels.

Veracel Celulose contracted Damen for a dredging solution to keep their maritime terminal accessible

Thursday, 28th September 2017

Veracel Celulose, one of the world’s most advanced pulp manufacturers, has found Damen in their quest for a solution to keep their maritime terminal at sufficient water depth. Jointly Veracel and Damen evaluated the situation on site and developed a solution to maintain the terminal water depth.

The solution was a combination of a submersible dredge pump, type DOP 250, and a Booster station, type BS 250. To improve the dredging efficiency the DOP Pump is equipped with a mining head fitted out with jet water nozzles, specially designed to loosen the sand. The pressurised water is delivered to the nozzles by a separate diesel driven jet water set. The DOP 250 pumps the dredged material over a distance of 450m to the Booster Station, which than transports the mixture for another 800m to the desired discharge location.

Besides the equipment Damen delivered an extensive training and commissioning package performed by one of Damen’s dredge masters assisted by the technicians of the Rio de Janeiro based Damen Service Hub. The training enabled Veracel to fully use and maintain their equipment within two weeks after delivery. The Service Hub in Rio ensures Veracel of 24/7 service to their equipment when needed.

Veracel has ordered a Production Measuring Unit as an add-on to their equipment.

The PMU will enable Veracel to real time measure the dry sand production which will help to increase efficiency even further. The PMU has been enhanced to be used in Veracel’s remote equipment monitoring system.

Damen is very pleased to have been able to supply Veracel a turnkey solution for the dredging of their port.

Friday, 22nd September 2017

Safe, quick and agile: PALFINGER MARINE's new generation FRSQ 630 fast rescue boat offers optimal working conditions in rough sea conditions – at competitive pricing.

In 2016, Harding Safety and PALFINGER MARINE merged into one company. Now the first product combining the lifesaving systems expertise of former Harding and the boat expertise of PALFINGER MARINE's professional boats division is introduced to the market: The new generation FRSQ 630 fast rescue boat. "FRSQ 630 features the best of both our worlds. The joint development has resulted in a boat with innovative design and excellent capabilities, ensuring great stability and optimal working conditions", says Trond Paulsen, PALFINGER MARINE's Sales Director for Lifesaving Equipment.

The GRP hull is based on former Harding's bestselling fast rescue boat, and the FRSQ 630's deep V-shape design ensures a soft ride at speed and in rough sea – also providing excellent control in sharp, high-speed turns. The vessel can be delivered with waterjets ranging from 144 to 258 HP, and can achieve speeds of up to 34 knots. It has the capacity to carry up to 15 people including stretcher.

"The possibility to have the entire console lifted off in a single lift also makes the FRSQ 630 extremely maintenance-friendly – allowing replacement of an engine within only two hours", Paulsen highlights.

PALFINGER MARINE's new generation fast rescue boat is suitable for a wide range of operations for offshore, merchant and passenger vessels, including search and rescue missions, raft assistance and towing, diving support, crew transport and workboat duties. It is designed and manufactured in compliance with the latest SOLAS and NMA Offshore regulations.

The FRSQ 630s are built in our fully owned high quality production facility. The factory is already having busy days preparing deliveries scheduled for September and October.

Damen to open Service Hub in Russian Black Sea port

Thursday, 21st September 2017

20 September 2017: Damen Shipyards Group has announced plans to establish a Service Hub in the Russian port of Novorossiysk in a Letter of Intent (LOI) signed with Delo Group of companies. The primary aims of the Service Hub will be to optimise the services provided to the growing number of Damen vessels operating in the region in addition to strengthening Damen’s cooperative relationship with Delo Group of companies.

Part of DeloPorts (which is, in turn, part of the Delo Group), Aleksino Port Marina Shipyard is a ship repair facility located in the Port of Novorossiysk, on the north-eastern coast of the Black Sea.

The LOI was signed by representatives from the two companies during the NEVA 2017 trade fair in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The open-ended agreement states that cooperation between Damen and Delo Group of companies regarding the new Service Hub will commence before the end of 2017.

Quick response
Damen’s decision to set up the new Service Hub is based in part on the large number of Damen-built vessels that operate in the Black Sea area. Currently more than 30 vessels that Damen built are operating in the region. Having a Service Hub here will allow Damen to react very quickly to any service or maintenance issues, by which Damen ship owners can increase the uptime of their vessels. Moreover, an ongoing service programme can also lengthen the entire lifetime of a vessel while reducing the Total Cost of Ownership.

This current number of Damen vessels operating in the area is set to increase in the coming months, as Delo Services (also part of Delo Group of companies) takes delivery of three Damen ASD 2310 tugs in November. Handover of a fourth ASD 2310 is scheduled for 2018.

A global network
In addition to providing service support to vessels in the area, the new Service Hub will also have relevance to operations at Aleksino Port Marina Shipyard. Damen intends to assist the local shipyard by adding value to their service and repair portfolio.

Damen operates Service Hubs around the world. The new Service hub in Novorossiysk will be the next step in Russia to further professionalize the service delivered to Damen customers.

Monday, 18th September 2017

E. P. Barrus Ltd is pleased to announce that September 18th, 2017 marks their official 100-year birthday.

Today, the company has long-standing partnerships with global suppliers, representing over 30 leading brands which are distributed through over 3000 authorised dealers nationwide. Mariner and Mercury outboard engines; Quicksilver leisure and fishing boats; John Deere and Yanmar marine and industrial engines, Cub Cadet garden machinery; WOLF-Garten and Wilkinson Sword garden tools are just a few of the well-respected brands in the Barrus portfolio. cont.

Engineering excellence has always been a strong focus with expertise in specialist applications engineering support and the most modern custom-engine building facilities based at the company’s headquarters in Bicester, Oxfordshire. Proudly ‘Built in Bicester’, Barrus designs, develops and builds engines for customers across the UK and overseas.

Robert Glen, Chairman, E. P. Barrus Ltd and the grandson of the founder Ernest Barrus commented, "As we celebrate our centenary we reflect on our proud past and most importantly express our sincere thanks to our customers, suppliers, distributors and partners, and loyal employees who have put their trust in Barrus and helped build the company’s success."

Over the years Barrus has been responsible for numerous innovative products and solutions including many firsts to be introduced to the UK market. These range from the first claw hammer, ride-on lawnmower and gas-fired garden barbecues. The D-BAT, a diesel powered all-terrain vehicle popular with the military; FAST PIRS®, an engine that can be rapidly restarted after being submerged, pioneered by Barrus for the Armed Forces and rescue organisations, and a multi-fuel outboard developed for the UK MoD capable of running on four different NATO fuels.

"One hundred years in business represents a tremendous milestone," commented Robert Muir, Managing Director, E. P. Barrus Ltd. "Not only are we looking back but also forward, focusing on the company’s future to build on our success and best serve our customers. 2017 is, indeed, a momentous year with recent announcements including our exciting new location plans which will enable us to grow the business. Wight Shipyard Co wins order for Scottish day cruise catamaran

Tuesday, 12th September 2017

Wight Shipyard Co has won an order to build a 21 metre passenger catamaran for a high profile Scottish tourism operation. The order, the second for the Isle of Wight-based shipyard in as many weeks, follows the welcome announcement of a second 41 metre high speed craft for Red Funnel.

The new Scottish vessel will join the Jacobite Cruises fleet on Loch Ness cruising between Dochgarroch, just outside Inverness, Clansman Hotel and the historic ruins of Urquhart Castle.

"We are delighted to secure this order, our first for Scotland," says Wight Shipyard Co CEO Peter Morton.

"Coming a matter of days after the announcement of a repeat Red Funnel order and following the recent delivery to MBNA Thames Clippers of two 35 metre low-wash river catamarans for London, the order for Jacobite Cruises’ new catamaran underpins WSC’s track record in building sustainable and low environmental impact vessels," Peter Morton says.

Designed by One2three Naval Architects the hullform of the new catamaran is designed to provide through-life efficiency with low structural weight assisting lower fuel consumption.

The new catamaran will accommodate 200 passengers who will board over the forward and aft decks. The aft deck will seat 13 passengers while the foredeck will have 15 seats and will be fitted with hinged boarding ramps. Passengers will enter a large central space with seating arrangements for 102 passengers tailored to Jacobite Cruises requirements and finished in the company’s own tartan. A spacious café/kiosk will provide refreshments and snacks. Four toilets will be located at the rear of the accommodation, one of which is for disabled customers.

Above, on the upper deck, outdoor seating will be provided for 84 passengers aft of the elevated wheelhouse.

In the hulls, the engine rooms are laid out in a clean, accessible manner and feature removal hatches over each engine, completely clear of overhead obstructions.

The vessel will be powered by two Scania DI9 main engines, each producing 257kW @ 2100 rpm. Capable of reaching a maximum speed of 15 knots, the vessel will cruise at 12 knots on Loch Ness further slowing to 5 knots in the Caledonian Canal.

"Jacobite Cruises is seeing incredible growth and last year we welcomed over 220,000 passengers onto the waters of Loch Ness," says Freda Newton, Managing Director of Jacobite Cruises.

"The new catamaran to be built by Wight Shipyard Co continues our investment in our business, our people and our fleet so we can offer the very best visitor experience. We have been most impressed by Wight Shipyard’s skills and in particular the quality of finish in their vessels built to date," she says.

The new vessel will be delivered in time for the 2018 summer season.
