Interview with Coltraco Ultrasonics: Why should I test seals using ultrasound?

With navies such as the Indian Navy and Royal Navy successfully implementing ultrasonic testing of watertight seals as part of their onboard safety management, Coltraco Ultrasonics answer questions about the importance of ensuring watertight integrity to delivering the Safeship®: protecting crew, cargo and vessel.

Why is watertight integrity an issue? 

In 1989 IACS introduced its guidance to owners concerning the care and survey of hatchcovers as follows:

“Loss of weather-tight integrity continues to be a constant factor leading to cargo damage which could result in a threat to the safety of the crew, the ship and its cargoes, despite advances in modern shipbuilding technology, construction, navigation and means of preventing ingress of water into hold spaces.”

The importance of watertight integrity to hatch-covers is equally applied to testing hatches, watertight and weathertight doors, and internal multiple cable transits as found onboard the wide range of maritime vessels and infrastructure (including naval, shipping, shipmanagers, marine surveyors, classification societies, offshore oil and gas, offshore renewable wind).

Other regulations such as SOLAS Reg II-1/11.1 – Initial Testing of Watertight Bulkheads etc requires “a thorough inspection of the watertight bulkheads shall be carried out” using ultrasonic leak test or hose test or equivalent test.

Little appears to have changed over the intervening years.

What risk does water ingress pose to the crew?

Lives are at stake. This is unacceptable and must change.

As the main cause of vessel loss is sinking, the maintenance, testing and monitoring of watertight hatches, doors and multiple cable transits on vessels is essential. A watertight hatch cover is designed to prevent the passage of water in either direction under a head of water for which the surrounding structure is designed.  Many mariners may think hatches are robust, monolithic structures, thereby failing to appreciate the small tolerances on panel alignment and gasket compression. It is both better and safer to think of hatches as complex, finely-made structures, to be handled with care.

CASE STUDY: 2015 El Faro incident
The case study of the 2015 El Faro disaster exemplifies the danger of water ingress. SS El Faro was a United States-flagged, combination roll-on/roll-off and lift-on/lift-off cargo ship crewed by U.S. merchant mariners. All 33 crew members tragically died in the sinking, when El Faro sailed from Jacksonville into Hurricane Joaquin, while heading to Puerto Rico. The wreckage was discovered more than 15,000 feet below the sea surface, Northeast of Acklins and Crooked Island, Bahamas. The NTSB have concluded that gaps in safety management contributed to the sinking of the El Faro. One of the significant issues was “poor watertight integrity which allowed seawater into the ship” stating that this accident may have been avoided if “crew had more information about the status of the hatches”. The tragedy of the El Faro has exemplified why it is crucial for the watertight integrity of vessels to be upheld. 

Coltraco Ultrasonics strongly believe that tragic incidences such as these must become a thing of the past. Safety of life at sea is paramount when pushing forward with the implementation and development of regulations. 

How are we failing to protect the crew by not maintaining seals?

Wrongly applied and poorly maintained cargo hatch covers and sealing systems increase the risk of cargo and vessel becoming damaged by water. The most common wet cargo problems include leaking cross joints, and compression bars, rubber gaskets, hatch coamings, drain channels and cleats in poor condition.

The importance of continually maintaining seal integrity must take a more prominent position in ship maintenance scheduling as demanded by regulations:

SOLAS Reg II-1/11.1  states that hatches and watertight seals must be regularly tested: “Where a hose test is not practicable [sic] it may be replaced by [sic] an ultrasonic leak test or an equivalent test. In any case a thorough inspection of the watertight bulkheads shall be carried out.”

How is ultrasound used to ensure watertight integrity?

The Swedish P & I club recommend using Ultrasound. As stated in their 2018 report “A much more effective method is to use an ultrasonic device, which is designed for this purpose and can pinpoint the area which is leaking, and if the compression of the gasket is sufficient. The advantages of using this type of equipment are evident, since ultrasonic tests can be carried out during any stage of the loading without risking cargo damage. The test can also be completed in sub-zero temperatures. The ultrasonic test should be carried out as per the class requirements.” 

Ultrasonic testing is a dramatically more sensitive, accurate and reliable method for testing cargo hatch covers, bulkheads and doors for watertight integrity on all vessels. A multi-directional ultrasound emitter is placed in a hold. The opening being tested is then sealed and the receiver is switched on ready to receive any leakage of ultrasound via a set of headphones. An increased reading of ultrasound signal signifies an issue with the integrity of the door/hatch. Further, and closer inspection will allow identification of any specific leakage site along with it’s severity. This test will take approximately 10 minutes and requires only one operator.

Jenkins Marine Responds to Stricken Yacht

Jenkins Marine recently received a call at 4am from the skipper of a 41m sailing yacht that had lost power (It was later discovered it had net caught in its prop). As there was no wind she could not return to port under her own steam. Thankfully the conditions were ok so we mobilised the tug ‘Polmear’ with crew to meet her near Bournemouth Pier within a few hours of receiving the call.

Motor Tug POLMEAR is a twin-screw tug, certificated under the MCA Workboat Code of Practice for operation up to 60 miles offshore. She normally provides towage and survey works throughout the UK and her powerful 880 hp engines combined with a very experienced crew enabled her to find and safely return the stricken yacht to Ocean Village in Southampton.

Dredger purchase is a ‘win-win’ for Poole

Jenkins Marine is pleased to announce the purchase of the grab hopper dredger C.H. Horn from the Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC). This is a significant investment in the dredging fleet for Jenkins Marine who have now secured a new ten-year contract to perform dredging services and provide marine support vessels for PHC within Poole Harbour and the Port of Poole.

Jenkins Marine, own and operate specialised workboats, barges and dredging vessels established in Poole since 1988. They continue to have a strong working relationship with PHC helping to maintain and support the port with marine engineering, salvage and general marine works. The C.H. Horn will complement their existing dredging fleet of shallow draft workboats and split-hopper barges by being able to work quickly and efficiently to remove materials from difficult to reach areas. C H Horn is a 25m long, self-propelled grab hopper dredger, with a capacity of 125m3 operated under the workboat code of practice for operation up to 20NM from a safe Haven.

The Manor Venture Returns to Manor Renewable Energy’s Portland Site

The Manor Venture has returned to Manor Renewable Energy’s Portland site for the first time since July 2018, after 20 months at sea and the successful completion of 4 temporary power projects.

The Venture continues to break boundaries in offshore wind and has maintained a reliable service throughout this period, while accommodating her 12 crew offshore for up to a week at a time. On the most recent project, MRE utilised her unsurpassed deck space to demobilise their temporary power sets, carrying five at a time back to shore.

During the time the Manor Venture has been at sea MRE has seen vast changes within the company; with the acquisition of Manor Marine UK Ltd more than doubling their workforce and a quickly expanding fleet, there are exciting times ahead.

The Manor Venture will now undergo a short refit period at MRE’s Portland shipyard before embarking on the next chapter.

Diverse Marine Awarded 24m CTV New Build by Turner Iceni

Industry leading new construction, refit and repair provider Diverse Marine Ltd. and industry leading crew transfer vessel service provider Turner Iceni are pleased to announce that a new build contract has been signed for the construction of ‘Iceni Valour’.

The 24m offshore wind crew transfer vessel has been designed keel up by Walker Marine Design of Southampton to meet the specific requirements of Turner Iceni and Gwynt Y Môr Offshore Wind Farm Ltd. who have the vessel under long term charter from next year.

As well as developing a hull form suited to the prevailing wave conditions on site other main considerations were to maximise the superstructure width whilst still allowing for full crew walk around, a resilient superstructure to minimize structure-borne vibration noise levels throughout the saloon and wheelhouse, flat working decks forward and aft with ramped side decks and simplified systems to maximise reliability and ease of maintenance by the crew and shore side support teams.

The vessel is to be powered by MANV12-1400 main engines coupled to ZF gears and Hamilton HM651 waterjets complete with AVX control system, featuring JetAnchor GPS positioning system.

Humphree ride control system provides active stabilisation and improved performance/reduced fuel consumption in varied load and trim conditions.

Actisense work with Siren Marine to take connected boat® to next level with NMEA 2000® integration

Introduction to Project
Siren Marine were looking to advance their popular Connected Boat® Platform by adding NMEA 2000 integration and customized app functionalities developed in partnership with leading marine manufacturers including Cobalt Boats, Jeanneau America, ZF Transmissions, and others. Actisense would provide the NMEA 2000 integration using a unique version of the ISO version of the NGT-1NMEA 2000 to PC interface, connecting that to Siren Marine's embedded onboard control unit.
 
Project Activity
Actisense's team of engineers and product developers worked closely with the team at Siren Marine to find a practical solution to fulfil their project requirements. Using the ISO version of their NGT-1 intelligent NMEA 2000 Gateway – which comes complete with OPTO-isolated input and ISO-Drive® output for safe interfacing – Siren were able to offer their MTC customers access to the vessel's NMEA 2000 PGN messages and the ability to send a sub-set of that data to the Siren Cloud server via a cellular connection.

Siren Marine's unique integration of NMEA 2000 data will now allow their customers to connect their systems directly to the cloud and deliver a powerful, custom-branded mobile app experience to users of their products. A rapidly growing group of forward-looking boat manufacturers including Southport, Vanquish Boats, Cobalt, Jeanneau, BassCat, and Falcon Boats have all taken advantage by including Siren technology on man y of their models.

Customer Benefits
Using the Actisense NGT-1 in the development of its NMEA 2000 integration, Siren Marine created the concept of dynamically establishing unique "data channels" for different marine manufacturers, capable of collecting and storing information both onboard within the Siren MTC device, as well as in the Siren Cloud.  Data from different devices is uniquely managed for use in both Siren's mobile and Fleet apps. This technology can provide manufacturers — as well as boaters — with comparative graphic information on RPM, temperature, oil pressure, fuel consumption, tank levels and soon, additional values such water depth and environment readings.  Using Siren Marine's powerful apps, users can plot this information in intelligent, time-selectable ways for up to six engines (vital with the growing popularity of multi-engine centre console boats). Siren Marine can provide graphic engine alert warnings with data and time selection, highlighting multiple engine performance parameters at the exact time of the alert.  This information can also be sent to boaters, manufacturers and even a pre-selected service provider — improving diagnostic accuracy, speeding up service times and increasing customer satisfaction.
Fleet operators will also benefit by being able to better understand and manage their assets with the ability to monitor and report on engine alerts, fluid levels and fuel consumption.

ATEX Certified DuroWipers

A recent order for six External DuroWipers Class 90 pantograph, will go to Excellift, a Malaysia based lift/crane/material handling company. The systems will be installed to two crane cabins for use on Oil Platforms, each requiring a wiper system for one front and two side windows.

EU Directive

ATEX is a European Union directive from the European Committee for Standardization, it’s a gold safety standard that covers: “Equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.”

Under the directive, if you are a supplier to the oil and gas or mining industries – or if you operate directly in them – you will be required to prove the equipment you supply is ATEX certified.

ATEX requirements covering the zones (Zone 0, 1 and 2 for Gas, and Zone 20 21 22 for dust).  Category 2GD Ex d IIB + H2, IIIC for classified zones 1, 2, 21 and 22 is in accordance with the ATEX directive 2014/34/EU.

DuroWipers are designed to operate in hazardous areas due to the presence of gas, vapour or dust. It is designed to work in all types of industrial machinery with a 24V and maximum operating current of 3A.

DuroWipers can work in an ambient temperature range from -30ºC + 60ºC allowing it to work in hot areas with aggressive ambient conditions.

15m Workboat Catamaran build underway at PDL Marine

The team at PDL Marine Ltd are pleased to announce the build of their latest 15m aluminium workboat. Designed with some very specific roles in mind and loaded with additional equipment.

The marine vessel is designed to MCA cat 2 and fitted with twin Doosan L126TIH engines and capable of 25 knots.

Also fitted are a multiple of capstans, winches and an A frame and additional seating internally to accommodate passengers when required.

Working with the client and the design team to ensure the vessel fits into the full criteria of the anticipated tasks was seamless and the green light was given to start the build.
