PDL Marine is contracted to refit two of the PLA Hydro vessels

PDL Marine, a boat building and fabrication company, has signed a contract with the Port of London Authority (PLA) to refit two of the organisation’s vessels that are used for hydrographic services.

With a jurisdiction of 95 miles of the tidal Thames, the PLA, the UK’s largest port, has contracted PDL Marine for an extensive refit of these two vessels, ensuring the PLA’s in-house marine engineering team is free to focus on routine vessel maintenance as trade on the river continues to grow.

The PLA has a world-leading hydrographic department, the busiest in the UK. The contract with PDL Marine, signed in January, is to refit the PLA’s 18 metre survey vessel Maplin and the 14-metre vessel Thame, formerly an offshore wind farm vessel that was converted for hydrographic use in 2017.

The Maplin is finalising the refit this week with target now of being completed by the 6th and transiting back to the Thames at the end of the week. Work will begin on the Thame soon.

John Dillon-Leetch, the PLA’s port hydrographer, said:

“This is Maplin’s first major refit since it was built and it will see us well-positioned to deliver our safety of navigation survey programme across the 400 square miles of the tidal Thames, as well as supporting the PLA’s commercial services provision for customers on the Thames and in the South-East.”

Daniel Harwood, the PLA’s marine engineering superintendent, said, “With in house demand for our core engineering services continuing to increase, it is helpful to outsource the refit of these two vessels to PDL Marine, and we’re confident that they will do a good job.”

Build projects

Centa has recently been working with Wight Shipyard Co on its latest build for Uber Boat by Thames Clipper – Earth Clipper.
The service and product Centa supplied is a full Tortional Vibration Calculation (TVC) service which resulted in the supply of two couplings solutions. The boat is powered by an innovative hybrid engine supplied by PME Power Systems Group Ltd that blends both traditional fuel and electric power, making it incredibly eco-friendly.

This hybrid design allows Earth Clipper to operate solely on battery power while transporting commuters and sightseers through central London and recharge while using bio fueled power outside of the city.

Williams Shipping New Pilot Boarding Agreement with Portsmouth International Port

Williams Shipping marked their pilot boarding agreement with Portsmouth International Port, by welcoming their new pilot boats to the city earlier today.

Portsmouth International Port’s pilots have detailed knowledge of Portsmouth Harbour and are experts on how to manoeuvre a wide range of vessels.

They board ships in the outer Solent and help the crew to guide the vessel safely into and out of the port, working 24 hours a day in all sorts of weather.

This new agreement is tailored to the needs of Portsmouth International Port’s pilotage service, and will mean increased flexibility for the ever-increasing number of cruise and cargo vessels that use the port.

The contract was awarded to Hampshire-based Williams Shipping following an in-depth nationwide tendering process.

The new pilot boats, named Willserve and Willfreedom, were greeted by Leader of Portsmouth City Council, Cllr Steve Pitt; Managing Director of Williams Shipping, Philip Williams and Portsmouth International Port’s Harbour master, Ben McInnes. Port Chaplain Rev. Phil Hiscock blessed the boats for the service they will provide for the port’s pilots.

Ben McInnes said: “I’m delighted to welcome Williams Shipping’s launches to Portsmouth. The launches will be essential in the safe boarding of our team of pilots onto ships, as they arrive at Portsmouth International Port. As the port becomes increasingly busy, we have found a provider who we can work in tandem with to ensure we can offer the best possible service to our customers.

“I’ve been working closely with Philip and the team at Williams Shipping to ensure a smooth start to the new service. I can’t wait to get started on this new chapter for the pilotage service here in Portsmouth.”

Kenc Engineering Chosen for Design and Fabrication Monopile Upending Tool

On the 10th of March, Kenc Engineering has been awarded a contract from an international marine contractor, to design and build a Flange Mounted Upending Tool (FMUT). The FMUT will be deployed on a jack-up vessel and used for various upcoming projects.

Kenc Engineering was requested to develop a versatile tool that can assist in the upending, down-ending, and lifting of monopiles with various weights and dimensions. The FMUT can handle diameters of 7,5 – 8 meters and is designed for a SWL of 1600t.

The FMUT will be delivered in December 2023 including a sea fastening cradle and will be deployed for the first time at a UK offshore wind farm project.
