Substantial investment into new site announced by Kloeckner Metals UK

Kloeckner Metals UK is pleased to announce they have completed the purchase of a site in Thurrock, Essex to develop a new state of the art facility.  

Part of the global Klöckner & Co Group, Kloeckner Metals UK boasts 14 business units across the UK and is one of the leading multi-metals processing suppliers in the UK.

The substantial investment into the new site was needed to support the relocation of the existing site at Thames Wharf, London, which, over the years, became too small for the business’ needs. Conveniently located adjacent to the M25, the new site is expected to be operational during the fourth quarter of 2021. Once completed, the new site will create more than 110K square feet of internal space, including newly built offices, state of the art processing equipment, and the latest digital logistics & operations technologies.

Advanced Insulation strengthens Subsea growth opportunities with Bardot acquisition

Already a leading provider of subsea products, Advanced Insulation is strengthening their Subsea division with the acquisition of Bardot, a French-based specialist who engineer and design all S.U.R.F functions based on polymers, syntactic or steel technologies. 

As part of the acquisition, a new company, AIS Bardot has been created.  They will operate independently but collaborate with Advanced Insulation to bring a wider range of products to both company’s customers.  

To facilitate this, Greg Hue, currently Global Sales Manager, will become country manager for France.  In his new role, Greg will continue to lead sales for AIS marine division (Manuplas®) whilst integrating AIS Bardot product range and solutions into the portfolio.  Greg Hue commented; “Our combined strengths will help customers, achieve cost efficiencies and have access to a broader range of products and solutions”. 

This acquisition comes just weeks after Advanced Insulation announced the expansion into a new unit in Gloucester to meet increasing demand for their subsea product range.

The Bardot Group is well known as a designer and manufacturer of polyurethane moulded products including bend restrictors and bend stiffeners.  They have developed a range of additional solutions (e.g. subsea buoyancy, water intake risers, ballast systems, clamps etc.) to support the oil and gas and renewables sectors which complements and extends Advanced Insulation’s current product range.

Film-Ocean expands its fleet of ROV with further investment

UK ROV services company, Film-Ocean Ltd, continues to expand its ROV fleet with the addition of a further Quasar 150HP Workclass ROV system.  This significant investment is part of Film-Ocean's fleet expansion strategy, which has seen four ROV systems added to the fleet over the past 12 months.   
 
Working at depths of up to 3000m Film-Ocean's Quasar 150HP Workclass ROV, a medium-sized high-power ROV, is well-suited for surveying, IRM, drill support and construction tasks; it's an all-rounder and the backbone of Film-Ocean's ROV fleet. The Quasar ROV is fitted with the latest technologies used for a broad range of operations.  
 
Film-Ocean's Quasar systems are both currently deployed in the North Sea and the Aegean Sea, supporting an electrical interconnection cable installation project.

When Will We Monitor our Gaseous Extinguishing Systems Properly ?

Abstract 

In this article the Chairman of a a high-exporting UK manufacturer in the Fire Sector asks why people and property remain at risk because they do not monitor the gaseous fire extinguishing systems that protect them.

In July 2020, at the height of COVID19 in the USA, the USS Richard Bonhomme, an amphibious aircraft carrier, developed a 5-day fire during a maintenance interval. It injured 68 military and civil personnel. It also made “out of service” a core strategic amphibious asset of the US Navy. It was one of only four ships in the US Pacific Fleet able to handle the F-35B 5th generation aircraft.  "As tensions mount with China in the South China Sea, as well as with North Korea, the loss of this ship and her capabilities will make it more difficult for the Navy to meet all its war-fighting requirements," said John Kirby, a CNN military analyst and former US Navy Admiral.

The top US Navy acquisitions official said, "Anyone who steps aboard our ships must be ever vigilant about ensuring fire safety. I urge you to use the recent fire to ensure that our work spaces are clean, that unnecessary clutter is removed, that all fire safety measures are being followed and that there is unrestricted access to firefighting and damage control equipment." Excellent, you may think. Regardless of the reason for the fire itself, a reason that the fire became uncontrolled … was because its fire suppression system had been shutdown and its compartment doors left open. For maintenance.

For a gaseous extinguishing system to function, whether liquefied, such as CO2, NOVEC™ 1230 or FM-200™ or non-liquefied, such as Nitrogen or Inergen, one needs two things: Firstly, sufficient contents to generate the design concentration required to extinguish the fire event, and secondly, compartmentation integrity, so that the extinguishing gas is contained within the space on actuation. Without either, the fire event risks escalation.

So how can one test that either exists ? To cater for the contents, one can shut the system down, dismantle it, and weigh each cylinder of extinguishing gas. Then re-instal each of them. There can 600 45KG cylinders on a commercial ship, 100 on an offshore platform. Hundreds in a Data Centre. It takes 2 licensed fire technicians people 15 minutes to do this, per cylinder. On a good day. For the compartmentation integrity, one can pressurise the compartment space, either by air or water, and see where it leaks out. Neither works when the fire technicians are away from the asset for the other 364 days per annum. 

This is how our industry has worked since gaseous systems were first developed. In 1924 the Walter Kidde Company developed the first CO2 extinguisher and in the 1960’s DuPont developed the first Halon system. In the 1990’s DuPont developed FM-200™ and 3M™ NOVEC™1230 as  “clean agents” to replace Halon, banned under the Montrael Protocol. After that came the use of natural un-liquefied gases. We know them today as Inergen™. What unites all of them is that they are highly pressurised. Some of them up to 300 Bar, or over 4,350 PSI. And anything that is pressurised can leak. Hence the reason why BS EN ISO 14520 was developed – to check that their contents had to be checked, and checked for content loss. If they lost more than 5% the cylinder had to be re-filled.

So our industry sensibly knows that anything that is pressurised can leak. That is science. Perfect physical principles. The mathematics are clear. Do you know a mathemetician or a physicist in our industry ?

The same with compartmentation. Like any ship the USS Richard Bonhomme is constructed to withstand damage. Since the principal reasons for ships loss at sea remains sinking and fire, all ships, offshore oil & gas platforms, even offshore wind turbines, understand the need for “compartmentation”. Below the waterline they are known as watertight compartment doors, and the areas between the watertight bulkheads, containing the electrical cabling that pass through every marine structure at sea, are called Cable Transit Areas, and they are designed to maintain compartmentation integrity. Not just to prevent water ingress and sinking, but to stop fire passing between the compartments too.

One way to test them is to fill them with water and to learn at what “head of water” the bulkhead collapses, or the watertight compartment door, bursts. But it is not very practical. Another is to pressurise the compartment by positive pressure and see where it leaks. All grand … on a cool calm day when no-one is inside the ship. Even better in a lab.

But here we are in our industry using gases for fire systems that are nearly 100, 60 and 30 years old, and we still test them inadequately. It is as if there has been no technological advance in any field other than our own.  And the accidents keep coming. The fires keep hurting and destroying and our regulations gently modify themselves, all at a time of some of the highest-paced technological change the world has ever seen.

A dairy farmer does not check a pregnant herd by weighing them. A bat does not fly through a forest at night by sight. A whale does not communicate hundreds of miles by using morse code. Submarines rarely see their adversaries or even the sea that they glide through. The blind “see” by hearing sound and in 4 of the above examples, it is the use of sound beyond our audible range that enables them to “hear the [ultrasonic] sounds that others cannot hear”.

A cylinder containing a Clean Agent is in itself acoustic. Like a bell. A compartment is a room. Unless it is an anechoic chamber designed to completely absorb reflections of either sound or electromagnetic waves, it reflects them. And its leak sites let them pass through.

So just as a vet, a bat, a whale or a submarine sonar, uses ultrasound to “see the sounds that others cannot hear”, so can our fire industry use ultrasound to test both the contents of its gaseous extinguishing systems and the compartmentation integrity of the spaces that they are meant to be “held” in.

All we need are the mathematics. Mathematics is the language of the universe. It expresses the physical principles that enable it. And it can be at the heart of our industry too. It already is by some of you reading this article.

At Coltraco Ultrasonics we share a British legacy in ultrasound that began in 1916 when the Admiralty used it to hunt enemy submarines. It is 104 years since we have had it. It has taken over 80 years for the fire industry to use it in the portable and constant monitoring of gaseous extinguishing systems, and the compartment spaces into which they actuate and protect.

Shamrock is a Damen Pushy Cat 14.5 metre workboat, coded under  MCA Workboat registry, Category 2 up to 12 passengers.  She can be used as a survey vessel, dive support operations and general port towage, she has also been adapted for plough/dredging work. 

This vessel will supplement our existing marine plant which includes barges, landing craft, various safety boats/small workboats, Unifloat modular pontoon systems, and a general-purpose, self-propelled, spud legged work barge fitted with an on-board deck crane.

All-Energy & Dcarbonise Postponed until 12-13 May 2021

Reed Exhibitions Limited has announced that All-Energy, the UK’s largest annual renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference, and the co-located Dcarbonise, are now scheduled to take place on Wednesday 12 – Thursday 13 May 2021 at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). This follows the announcement by SEC that NHS Louisa Jordan will continue to be in place at the venue until 30 April 2021.

As SEC explained: 

“The SEC has now concluded a licence extension with the Scottish Government to extend the tenancy period for NHS Louisa Jordan until 30 April. The extension accommodates an appropriate decommissioning period which allows full reinstatement to be made to the venue followed by a thorough clean. SEC will be back as a fully operational event venue from 1 May 2021.”

Star International launches unmanned piracy detection vessel

  • The Narwhal Star Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) is designed to identify piracy threats and inform evasive actions 
  • The USV improves safety for passengers and crew, whilst safeguarding vessels, cargo and other valuable assets 
  • The USV is piloted via a remote command centre and is equipped with a payload specifically developed for surveillance missions

Star International, worldwide supplier to the offshore and marine industries, has launched a new Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) that has been designed for use by shipping operators to identify piracy threats.

The Narwhal Star USV is a highly effective, ocean going Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) that improves safety for passengers and crew, whilst safeguarding vessels, cargo and other valuable assets on-board ship.    

The USV is a highly versatile surveillance platform that can be piloted via a remote Ground Control System (GCS), or used as a conventional, manually piloted vessel. The USV has been designed for rapid deployment from a parent vessel and can be launched using a standard davit or cargo crane. 

Jeff Antley, Managing Director at Star International said: 

“We are very excited to announce the launch of the Narwhal Star USV. The vessel meets a growing demand for ocean going unmanned surveillance solutions that can identify piracy threats without endangering crew.

The technology behind the USV is the product of a long-term research and development project between RIB manufacturer Narwhal and UTEK, a specialist in unmanned control systems. Star International has then brought its knowledge of shipping to bear in the development of the Narwhal Star USV, a high-performance vessel that includes a payload specifically developed for surveillance and reconnaissance purposes.   

Capabilities include an operational range of up to 300 nautical miles, a top speed in excess of 50 knots and marine grade day and night vision cameras with a range of up to 35km.

Defensive capabilities on-board also include flare and smoke cannons, laser dazzlers and decoy buoys, meaning the USV is well equipped to evade any hostile vessels it may encounter. 

Despite a global drop in piracy over recent years, the past 12 months has seen a resurgence in attacks on commercial shipping. In the first three months of 2020 alone, the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre recorded a 24% rise in piracy attacks worldwide. 

Western and Eastern coasts of Africa, coastlines around the Indian Ocean, Malaysia and the Philippines are particularly affected, with recent incidents also occurring in the Caribbean and on the Pacific coast of South America.*

Northern Offshore Services ambulance catamaran protected by Manuplas®

Our marine team worked closely with Northern Offshore Services (NOS) to manufacture two fender pads for their purpose built ambulance catamaran, that has been designed to enable an ambulance to be transported on the catamaran to improve the transfer and treatment of potentially critically ill patients.

The design and installation of effective fendering was key in this project to ensure benefits including:

  • Reinforced for extra protection – reduce any effect of any impact on quay or harbour walls
  • Lightweight design – enable the catamaran to reach maximum speed quickly, critical in an emergency
  • Reduced fuel consumption – reduce operating costs
  • Quick and easy to install – ensuring the catamaran is out of service for a short time frame

After sharing their design ideas, we worked with NOS to supply an appropriate solution to protect their vessel that is now operational in Sweden. We were delighted to be part of a project which resulted in the region’s ambulance helicopter being used less, and consequently lead to a reduction in costs.

Wight Shipyard Co delivers four ferry simultaneous build to Malta

Wight Shipyard Co has achieved a UK first by building four ferries simultaneously at its yard in Cowes, IOW, for a leading Maltese tour operator.

The order, WSC’s largest ferry export order to date, consists of two 20m and two 33m light weight ferries, designed by One2Three Naval Architects.

Jo Daly, COO, WSC, said: “We are proud of being able to produce four large ferries within a year, despite the restrictions and changes to working brought about by the worldwide pandemic Covid19. This is testament to the outstanding team that made such a quick completion possible whilst still achieving the same high build standards and attention to detail that WSC has become synonymous with.”

Bespoke design

Valletta’s Grand Harbour is both steeped in history and a geological site of significant interest dating back to prehistoric times where many of the ancient wharfs still exist. Creating a vessel that could operate within these parameters was led by One2Three Naval Architects, the clients, and the design team at WSC.

The bespoke vessels for Captain Morgan Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of Fortina Investments Ltd, have been created to be lighter and more fuel efficient than anything that the yard has built before.

WSC specialises in the build of light weight ferries with the subsequent benefit of lower fuel burn. Meticulous attention is paid to the weight of every element of the materials and equipment used on the builds, which has led to outstanding weight reductions on all four of the ferries offering substantial fuel savings. Every one percent of weight saving equates to one percent of fuel saving.

The 20m

The two newbuild 20m harbour catamarans will replace existing vessels which already service the historic harbour cruise around the two natural harbours surrounding the capital city of Valletta and the 3-cities.

The 20m is designed to be a slower harbour waterbus for frequent stopping in ports surrounding the sheltered waters around the capital. It is designed for optimum efficiency achieving speeds of between 8-10 knots, with a top speed of 20 knots.

It is powered by two MAN D2676 LE434 rated to 2 x 270kW = 540kw total @ 1800 rpm coupled to ZF500 marine transmissions and twin CJR 5 bladed dynamically balanced fixed pitch propellers.

The vessel’s layout provides for seated passengers on both the main and upper decks whilst providing excellent comfort levels in an open-plan deck arrangement. The wheelhouse main steering station is located on the second deck level for excellent visibility. It can carry 197 passengers and three crew.

The 33m

The two 33m medium speed vessels meanwhile will service a new commuter/tourist hop-on hop-off service along the east coast of Malta as far as the island of Gozo. These vessels are also replacing a number of old existing vessels which transport commuters between the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino.

The main aim for these vessels is to move commuters and tourists quickly in and out of different locations around the coast and offer commuters flexibility and comfort. Whilst operating below 20 knots and under high speed code it can achieve a top speed of 30 knots.

This vessel requires more power than the 20m ferry with two MAN D2862 LE466 marine diesel engines rated at 2 x 749kw = 1498kw total @ 2100rpm coupled with two ZF3050 marine transmissions and two CJR 5 fixed propellers.

The layout of the 33m is slightly different to the 20m. The main deck features an enclosed airconditioned cabin with seating and a kiosk/bar located at the aft end of the cabin, while the open upper deck provides protection for the passengers from rain with a large overhanging roof. It can carry 298 passengers and four crew.

Top service

Despite the changes to safe working practises and subsequent problems brought about by the worldwide pandemic, the builds have been received in good time and on budget. Compared to the older boats they are replacing the vessels will achieve considerable fuel savings and reduced operating costs.

They will also help to achieve sustainability targets and obtain lower emissions across the fleet. It is anticipated that current traffic congestion around Malta will be eased by large volumes of people using water transport not cars or buses.

Going forward, these vessels shall form an integral part of Fortina Investments’ innovative iSeeMalta concept, which provides visitors with access through a single pass to the ferry service, city sightseeing buses and public transport, as well as to Heritage Malta sites and other attractions.
