Propulsion Control Systems

Propulsion control systems are a crucial component of an operation’s power system, yet they often go unchecked until a problem arises. While we frequently receive requests for engine upgrades, control systems are often overlooked or temporarily fixed until a major issue necessitates a complete control systems upgrade.

We were recently called in to urgently address a marine power system failure after the outdated main engine controls failed. Our team responded promptly, setting up in the engine room to design, build, install, and commission new engine control systems and engine wiring harnesses, restoring the vessel’s operation in record time.

With our expertise in engine repair, generator, electrical, and propulsion control system services, we are your trusted partner across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. From inspections, testing, and troubleshooting to full upgrades and retrofits, we ensure your power generators, main engines and auxiliary engines run smoothly and efficiently.

DLM & LGS Combine on HMS Warrior Historic Warship

Wednesday, 9th October 2024

Dynamic Load Monitoring (UK) Ltd (DLM) and Lifting Gear & Safety Ltd (LGS) worked together to measure tension on mooring chains of HMS Warrior, keeping it safely docked in Portsmouth, UK.

Southampton-based DLM is a specialist in the design, manufacture, repair, and calibration of load cells, load testing, and cable working equipment for the offshore, renewable energy, marine, subsea, and lifting and rigging industries. LGS, which has a facility at nearby Fareham, specialises in the hire, sale, and service of lifting equipment, marine, and safety equipment.

LGS accepted a scope of work from a longstanding customer that handles mooring and marine construction in the Portsmouth area. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard had a requirement to measure the tension on mooring chains that keep HMS Warrior, the crown jewel of the Victorian Navy, safely docked. The iconic ship is reimagined exactly as she was in 1863 and is still afloat over 160 years later.

Ryan Phillips, technical manager at DLM, said: “We have been working with LGS for a number of years, on various projects serving a variety of important industries. This latest project is a good example of us providing distributors with technical support, while they oversee equipment supply and project management in order to provide a combined service at the point of use.”

Stuart Wilson, business development manager at LGS, said: “DLM supported us as a supplier by attending the jobsite and complementing our skills in rigging with their highly technical knowledge in load monitoring; without the data-logging technology and the Bluetooth connectivity to a laptop, we would have had to organise manual logging of data. DLM’s service support and products saved us and our customer time, money, and effort.”

Hardware, software combines

DLM provided two telemetry dongles; two 100t capacity tensile links; two laptops, complete with the TW-3.0 toolkit installed; two uninterruptible power supplies, to keep the system running even in the event of a loss of power; and two TW-3.0 handhelds, which served as a further failsafe system. LGS provided four 120t capacity shackles and carried out installation of the load cells aboard the vessel. Lever hoists were used to create slack in the anchor chain, before high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) grommets were used to attach the chain to the load link.

Phillips added: “As part of our standard product range, the selected fleet of equipment provided an ideal solution for this mooring chain application. The dongles are designed to be used alongside the TW-3.0 toolkit, and together they provided the end user with all the tools required.”

Tests were ongoing for three months, giving Portsmouth Historic Dockyard a large volume of data, gathered over a significant timeframe, which can be used to analyse the load being pulled on the mooring chains. DLM’s Phillips was on call for the duration and visited the ship on multiple occasions to provide in-person support.

The dockyard remained open to visitors throughout; extra precautions were taken due to the risks associated with working in a public space.

Jumbo has installed wind assisted propulsion to the Jumbo Jubilee

Tuesday, 8th October 2024

Jumbo has announced the installation of two mechanical sails to Heavy Lift Vessel (HLV) Jumbo Jubilee. The wind assisted ship propulsion (WASP) solution is the latest in a series of installations to the vessel in a bid to boost fuel efficiency and cut carbon.

Jumbo is committed to advancing sustainable heavy-lift shipping with innovative energy-saving and decarbonisation initiatives across its fleet.

CEO Daan Kornneef..“At Jumbo, we believe that every step towards sustainability is crucial. The installation of these mechanical sails on Jumbo Jubilee is a testament to our commitment to decarbonise and innovate. While there’s always more work to be done, initiatives like this propel us closer to a greener maritime industry. We’re proud of our team’s continued efforts in making Jumbo a leader in sustainable shipping.”

Unique approach to measuring fuel efficiency

The company’s approach is to apply multiple fuel-saving solutions to a single vessel, thereby making possible the measurement of each technology’s contribution to the overall picture.

Examples already applied to Jumbo Jubilee include an efficiency-boosting propeller coating, AI powered anti-fouling monitoring system and an eco-control system. This latest move, the installation of two Econowind ventofoils, will assess the impact of WASP on the vessel’s efficiency.

Jumbo Technical Manager Andres Cassanova explains, “While not fully optimised for our vessel type, these sails will help us to gather valuable insights on real-world fuel savings and explore further optimisations that will allow Jumbo to reduce its environmental footprint even more.”

The relatively small footprint of the sails makes them an ideal solution for installation on a heavy lift vessel, where space is required for project cargoes. Additionally, the sails are flexibly mounted on a customised frame engineered in-house by Jumbo structural engineer Estelle Bongers. With this, the sails can be moved, or even transferred to another vessel should additional space be required for cargo.

AI powered anti-fouling monitoring

The installation of the ventofoils follows application of an antifouling coating on the ship’s propeller to maintain efficiency, as well as the introduction of an AI powered antifouling hull coating monitoring system.

This innovative system captures a wide range of date including vessel speed, geographical position, as well as sea water temperature and other environmental conditions and parameters. This allows the system to make predictions and provide notifications when there is a risk of accelerated fouling.

This means that Jumbo can perform an inspection and undertake maintenance in advance of a decrease in fuel efficiency. It also means the system can be maintained using less aggressive methods, ensuring its preservation for longer durations between dockings.

Intelligent cruise control

A further measure is the installation of an eco-control system to the vessel. “This can be viewed as a type of intelligent cruise control,” explains Andres. “It allows us to set a fuel consumption or maximum speed limit. With this, the eco-control system takes over and, based on RPM and propeller pitch, is continually adjusting to ensure optimally efficient performance, minimal fuel consumption and emissions.”

With these significant technologies installed to the Jumbo Jubilee, Jumbo expects to achieve fuel savings. A crucial factor in this, says Technical Superintendent Patrick Feddes, is collaboration. “If you want to reduce your environmental footprint, it’s not only down to one part of the company. It’s a team effort between those on board the ships and those on shore. The technologies play an important supporting role in creating energy savings, but a significant factor is awareness and cooperation throughout the various departments of the organisation.”

About Jumbo

Jumbo is a family-owned company with two divisions: Shipping and Offshore. For over 50 years, Jumbo has delivered innovative and reliable heavy lift transportation solutions across various industries. Operating a versatile fleet of state-of-the-art vessels with lifting capacities of 650 to 3,000 tonnes, Jumbo services a range of cargo needs, from large equipment transport to offshore installations.
