Damen presents the next generation in harbour towage: safe, green and connected tugs

With the presentation of the RSD Tug 2513, on the 25th June at the ITS 2018 in Marseille, France, Damen introduces its next generation ship-handling tugs. Composed of a mix of new designs and a further evolution of existing designs, this next generation series is built on a solid foundation.  New and proven technologies are combined and applied in a modular way, to achieve the best balance in flexibility with high value for money over the entire lifecycle.

RSD Tug 2513
The next generation range is led by the innovative RSD Tug 2513, a compact and powerful tug redefining compact agility in harbor towage. Fully focused on ship-handling, this vessel offers 70 t bollard pull in both push and pull mode in the safest possible way by its always bow first principle and patented Twin Fin skeg design. A safe, simple and efficient concept, ideal for terminal operations. 

ASD Tugs 2312 and 2813
In answer to the needs for efficient ship-handling operations, with the possibility to perform occasional additional jobs such as salvage and coastal towing, Damen added a new series of compact multi-purpose vessels, the ASD Tug 2312 and ASD Tug 2813. 

At 60 t and 80 t BP respectively, again both in push and pull mode, these vessels offer the ultimate mix of versatility and compactness by featuring smart layouts. The ASD Tug 2312 offers six person MLC compliant accommodation and aft deck area of 54 m2and the ASD Tug 2813 10 person MLC compliant accommodation with an aft deck area of 82 m2. Sailing with extended crew is now combined with optimal towing positions forward and aft, a compact design for efficient and versatile operations.

ASD Tug 2811 and ATD Tug 3212
To complete the next generation range, Damen redesigned the benchmark in harbour towage, the ASD Tug 2810 to become the new ASD Tug 2811 and upgraded the successful ASD Tug 3212, which was first introduced during ITS in 2012. These proven designs have been further optimised and made ready for the next decade, offering solid performance for harbor, coastal and exposed terminal operations, with 60 t and 80 t BP respectively, again both in push and pull mode.

Safe 
All next generation vessels are laid out to comply with the new stability regulations, initiated as Harmonised Class rules and enforced by the IMO for adaptation in January 2020. Increasing the standards for stability requirements is a clear and necessary answer of the IMO and classification societies to the increasing power and compactness of modern ship-handling tugs to ensure maximum safety in operations. 

Green 
Damen now also introduces a modular Marine NOx Reduction System, to enable compliance with IMO Tier III regulations. By preparing these next generation designs, Damen achieves flexibility for owners to comply with the newest emission regulations – which will be gradually extended over the world’s ports – directly from the start of building, during building or even as easy retrofit.

Connected 
With the new Damen Digital Platform, Damen Tugs are fit for the future. This platform is built to deal with the everyday challenges in operations planning and maintenance and enable customers to increase efficiency of their operations for a sustainable future.

Kingston Council takes delivery of Damen CSD 350

Kingston District Council, in partnership with the Cape Jaffa Development Group, has recently taken delivery of a Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) from Damen Shipyards Group. The CSD350 will be used to dredge along the breakwater at Cape Jaffa, the Cape Jaffa marina and within Maria Creek Boat Launch Facility in Kingston. This is the only dredger owned by a South Australian council, and has been the most significant purchase Kingston District Council has undertaken in terms of the logistics involved in an overseas purchase, transportation and assembly. The procurement process was completed in conjunction with LGA Procurement.

The CSD350 was selected as it can dredge at a max dredging depth of -9m and pumps some 2.000 m3/h an hour – being 10 times the capacity of the aged dredger which has worked across some of the waters previously.

Another of the reasons the Council selected Damen was because of its philosophy of building standard solutions for stock. This meant that the dredger was both proven and available for faster delivery than a custom build, allowing the Council to commence dredging as quickly as possible. 

The modular CSD was transported aboard a container vessel from the Netherlands to Port Adelaide in six shipping containers and three breakbulk items – where it then commenced its transit by road some 330kms into Cape Jaffa for assembly.  On location, the stationary dredger was assembled swiftly by the local crew assisted by two Damen Field Service Engineers.  The 55 tonne dredger has been commissioned and has undergone all start up trials, after which it was handed over to the council.  The joint assembly and testing process was completed in difficult winter weather conditions ahead of programme.

Kingston District Council Mayor Reg Lyon said, “Council has a thriving fishing industry and extensive tourism industry. The Cape Jaffa Marina is located on the Indian Ocean, and has a key role housing the rock lobster fishing fleet.  An open and easily accessible marina will assist the flourishing local economy, ensuring the ongoing sand management plan will ensure ocean access of the marina throughout the year.”

Council’s Chief Executive Officer Andrew MacDonaldsaid, “Damen has worked proactively with the Kingston team to assist with the requirements of Australian Maritime Safety Authority surveyors to ready the dredger for approval to operate in South Australia.  We are looking forward to continuing the ongoing relationship we have established with Damen – who will support our team from their Brisbane maintenance operations.”

Cape Jaffa Development Company Director David Lucas said he, “is thrilled to see the dredger onsite, and looks forward to seeing the Cape Jaffa Anchorage thriving once again.”

A new catamaran for Scotland from Wight Shipyard Co

Wight Shipyard Co has delivered its latest vessel to high profile Scottish tourism operator Loch Ness by Jacobite. The new 20 metre day-cruise passenger catamaran Jacobite Maverick is joining the company’s fleet sailing between Dochgarroch, just outside Inverness, Clansman Harbour and the historic ruins of Urquhart Castle.

“We are delighted to see Jacobite Maverick sail to her new home on Loch Ness as she represents our first order for Scotland,” says Wight Shipyard Co CEO Peter Morton.

“The Loch Ness by Jacobite order was announced in September last year and came only a matter of days after the confirmation of a repeat Red Funnel order which itself followed the delivery to MBNA Thames Clippers of two 35 metre low-wash river catamarans for London.

“The Jacobite Maverick underpins WSC’s track record in building sustainable and low environmental impact vessels,” Peter Morton says.

“Loch Ness by Jacobite is seeing incredible growth and last year we welcomed almost 300,000 passengers onto the waters of Loch Ness,” says Freda Newton, Managing Director of Loch Ness by Jacobite.

“The new catamaran built by Wight Shipyard Co continues our investment in Loch Ness by Jacobite, our people and our fleet so we can offer the very best visitor experience. We have been most impressed by Wight Shipyard’s skills and in particular the quality of finish in their vessels,” she says.

Designed by One2three Naval Architects the hullform of the new catamaran is designed to provide through-life efficiency with low structural weight assisting lower fuel consumption.

The Jacobite Maverick accommodates 200 passengers who board over the forward and aft decks. The aft deck seats 13 passengers while the foredeck has 15 seats and is fitted with hinged boarding ramps. Passengers enter a well appointed and tastefully finished cabin with seating arrangements for 102 passengers tailored to Loch Ness by Jacobite requirements. Specially crafted bench seating finished in the company’s own tartan is complemented by tasteful oak tables manufactured by the shipyard. There is also provision for securing two wheelchairs in the cabin and throughout, all passengers can view 32” flat screen televisions showing the depths below.

Providing refreshments and snacks is a spacious café/kiosk which is fully equipped with two servery bench sinks, an under counter refrigerator, two fridge coffee machines, a hot chocolate machine and an ice maker.

The Four toilets are located at the rear of the accommodation, one of which is for disabled customers. Each WC includes a dual water flushing toilet and a raised bowl hand basin complete with a Dyson airblade tap hand dryer.

Above, on the upper deck, outdoor seating is provided for 84 passengers aft of the elevated wheelhouse which is equipped with the very latest in navigational aids. The instrument panel with all gauges, indicators and warning lights associated with main engines is positioned so that each component is readily visible to the helmsman. The bridge wings are fitted with a control station.

In the hulls of Jacobite Maverick, the engine rooms are laid out in a clean, accessible manner and feature removal hatches over each engine, completely clear of overhead obstructions. The vessel is powered by two Scania DI9 main engines, each producing 257kW @ 2100 rpm. Capable of reaching a maximum speed of 15 knots, the vessel will cruise at 12 knots on Loch Ness further slowing to 5 knots in the Caledonian Canal.

Kotug Smit Towage performs naming ceremony for Damen tugs Rotterdam & Beagle

On 13thJune 2018, the naming ceremony of the newly-built Damen tugsRotterdamand Beagletook place in the Port of Rotterdam, during Kotug Smit Towage’s annual ‘Maatjes-party’ (Herring with friends,a traditional Dutch event to mark the beginning of the herring season).

During2017 and 2018, Kotug Smit Towage has taken four newly-built Damen tugs into service for its European harbour towage activities. Two of this quartet, the Rotterdamand Beagleare currently operating in the Port of Rotterdam. 

The Rotterdamis an ASD Tug 2913 and has a bollard pull in excess of 80 tonnes. The tug is renowned for its manoeuvrability and environmentally efficient performance. The naming ceremony of Rotterdamwas performed by Lady Sponsor Ms Janet van Bergen, the partner of Captain Tjitte de Groot, President of the Regional Pilots’ Corporation Rotterdam-Rijnmond.

The Beagleis an ATD Tug 2412 Twin Fin. With her 72 tonne bollard pull, she combines compactness with manoeuvrability. The naming ceremony of Beaglewas performed by Lady Sponsor Ms Renee Naaktgeboren. In 2017, Renee received the Young Port Talent award in Rotterdam. This award is intended for committed and talented young people between 20 and 30 years of age, who work in the Port of Rotterdam with passion and enthusiastic drive.

Manuplas to exhibit at Seawork for fifth consecutive year

Manuplas will showcase its range of vessel fendering systems, foam-filled quayside fenders and marine buoys at the Seawork Commercial Marine and Workboat Exhibition, 3-5 July 2018.

In recent years Wind Farms have been constructed in deeper waters than ever before. This has led to greater need for vessels to operate in tougher conditions and at higher speeds. Vessel owners are therefore focusing on reducing operational costs, particularly in terms of fuel consumption.

This has driven Manuplas to develop lightweight vessel fendering systems which are up to 60% lighter than traditional rubber D fenders. These fenders help to improve speed and fuel consumption of wind farm vessels and crew transfer monohulls/catamarans. Such lightweight fender systems are also proving popular for a range of other vessels which operate at high speeds in challenging maritime conditions including high speed interceptor vessels, lifeboats, military vessels, patrol boats and search and rescue vessels.

The fenders are manufactured from a cross-linked polyethylene foam with a non-marking spray applied polyurethane elastomer skin.

Manuplas lightweight, sprayed fenders are often supplied as a modular configuration which makes it easier, quicker and more cost effective to replace worn or damaged sections. Vessel service downtime is therefore also reduced dramatically.

Ballast Water Treatment – How Digital Tank Gauging Can Help

Ballast water is an essential component of ship operations, with larger vessels requiring thousands of cubic metres to maintain stability and maneuverability.

The recently enforced International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships Ballast Water and Sediments requires that an approved water treatment system is fitted to ships to prevent the spread of harmful aquatic organisms from one region to another and prevent damage to the marine environment by minimising the uptake and subsequent discharge of sediments and organisms. Ships will also now be required to implement a ship specific ballast water management plan and to record and report on all ballast treatment and exchanges.
