Inland and Coastal Marina Systems expands sales team

Pontoon manufacturer and water access specialist, Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) is delighted to announce the appointment of Bryan Stewart, expanding its sales team in the UK.

In his new role as Sales Manager for the central and northern areas of the UK and Wales, Bryan will focus on business development as well as supporting the company’s offices in Southampton and Lossiemouth in Scotland.

“I am really pleased to come on board at Inland and Coastal Marina Systems,” says Bryan. “Oliver and his team have built a highly respected brand with a fantastic reputation for the highest quality and service, and I am looking forward to playing my part in the next phase of the business’ growth.”

Inland and Coastal Marina Systems sponsors the Harbour Master Sailing Challenge, supporting The Seafarers Charity

Committed to providing safe water access for all workers afloat, Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) is sponsoring the Harbour Master Sailing Challenge.

The pontoon specialist announced its support of Mark Ashley-Miller’s bid to sail around the British Isles to meet every Harbour Master in the UK and Ireland at the UK Harbour Masters’ Association’s Spring Conference yesterday.

For the last three and a half years, Mark has been sailing his 34ft Nauticat, Good Dog, clockwise around the UK. Raising money for The Seafarers Charity as he goes, Mark’s journey has so far taken him into every river and creek in England, Scotland, and Wales where he has received a friendly welcome in over 250 harbours and ports.

It is estimated that there are nearly 300 Harbour Masters in Britain and Ireland, although the exact number is not known as there is no official register. The support ICMS brings to the challenge will enable Mark to continue his quest and finish the 8,000 nautical mile challenge by circumnavigating Ireland and visiting the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

“Harbour Masters have a vary varied role, from welcoming vessels as they enter a harbour to being responsible for the overall safety of anyone getting afloat within their designated area of authority,” says Oliver Shortall, Managing Director at ICMS.

“By supporting Mark, and following him on his adventures, we hope to gain a greater insight into the safety challenges faced by harbours masters and further understand their changing requirements to provide safe water access to harbour users, whether that’s CTV crews for offshore windfarms, sailors on recreational yachts, or paddleboards and kayakers.”

Mark comments: “I am very pleased to be supported in my challenge by Inland and Coastal Marina Systems.  The provision of high-quality pontoons in a harbour makes it much more attractive to visiting yachts, not to mention the safety aspect for commercial use. I look forward to having them at my side as I circumnavigate Ireland and raise more money for The Seafarers’ Charity in 2023.”

Mark has raised nearly £20,000 for The Seafarers’ Charity, a non-profit organisation which supports those who work – or have worked – at sea, and their families. With a specific focus on safety, the charity tackles the root causes of seafarer hardship and disadvantage in the UK and around the world.

“Through our collaboration with Mark, we now have greater awareness of the life-changing work that The Seafarers’ Charity does. In addition to supporting the Harbour Master Sailing Challenge, we have decided to support The Seafarers’ Charity directly, designating it as our chosen charity for 2023,” continues Oliver.

“As a business, we help many seafarers get to work by providing safe access to commercial boats and fishing vessels. By donating and raising money for The Seafarers’ Charity, we want to ensure that they’re looked after and supported while they’re afloat too.”

Ocean Business 2023 conference programme announced

Preparations for next month’s Ocean Business 2023 are well underway, with a sold-out exhibition plus a full conference programme, more details of which can now be unveiled.

The roll-call of conference speakers reflects the scope and ambition of the sector as it gathers together for the global marine technology and science show, to be held at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton from April 18-20.

With the theme Sustainability for our Oceans, the opening session of the conference, taking place on Tuesday, April 18, will focus on technology in a changing climate and look at how the ocean science community is meeting challenges in the blue economy.

Sector leaders at the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), Marine Technology Society (MTS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and industry partners will be reporting their findings from the recently launched Ocean Decade action initiative, and highlighting the potential for a next-generation global ocean observing system to meet the needs of the blue economy.

The speakers include Zdenka Willis of MTS, Emma Heslop of GOOS, and Ralph Rayner of NOAA, along with Peer Fietzek, Senior Business Development Manager Ocean Science at Kongsberg Maritime.

Sonardyne Business Development Manager Aidan Thorn will chair the Autonomy Operations session, with a presentation from UTEC’s Lead Surveyor, Torsten Marten, on the company’s new USV solution to accelerate subsea survey and inspection. Marten will also discuss the enabling communications technology that is a prerequisite for any remote survey operations.

Next up, in the Autonomy Regulations session, Esmè Flegg, the Code Vessel Policy Lead at the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, will provide an update on the national and international regulatory developments for autonomous vehicles, and Matthew Palmer, the Global Naval Business Lead at Lloyds Register, will discuss the LR Unmanned Marine Systems Code set up in conjunction with industry.

Also not to be missed is a new Pan-Sector Workshop and Panel, which this year will address the trends and challenges for autonomous vehicles in both the marine and aviation sectors. Session Chair Ruth Mallors-Ray, Director of RMR Consultants, will introduce a notable line-up of participants, including Ajit Jacob of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, Tim Wilkes of Nash Maritime, Adam Parnell of CHiRP, Julia Jiggins of Thales, and Richard Derrett-Smith of Egis Aviation.

Another conference highlight is the Future Workforce session, which will focus on the science of surveying at sea. Becky Conway, CEO of THS:UKI, will explain how the company is supporting the future hydrographic workforce and promoting the status of the hydrographic profession.

Among the final talks of the day, Gordon Meadow, CEO and Founder of SeaBot Maritime, will emphasise the importance of human-centred digital transformation; Maritime UK’s Stuart Baker will offer an overview of the Solent’s world-leading maritime cluster; and Mike Liddell of Fugro will consider the revolution in marine geodata acquisition and what it means for the future workforce.

Damen Marine Components delivers rudder and steering gear for new coastal research vessel

A single high-lift Barke® flap rudder together with a piston-type steering gear system was delivered by Damen Marine Components’ (DMC) to Holland Shipyards Group’s yard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. There they were fitted into a 35-metre coastal research vessel that was built for the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and which is named the RV Prinsesse Ingrid Alexandra.

DMC’s Barke® flap rudders are specifically designed for ships engaged in activities such as research, fishing and dredging that require excellent manoeuvrability, low noise and vibration levels, and first-rate fuel economy. Their progressively rotating flaps generate high lift forces at large rudder angles and low drag at small rudder angles, delivering the necessary performance in all situations. The enclosed linkage system also provides overload protection and prevents any material present in the surrounding water from entering the rudder assembly.

DMC’s piston-type steering gear systems are an ideal match for the Barke® flap rudders. They are highly reliable and, with multiple options regarding rudder stock connections, rudder angles and cylinders, the installation process is both efficient and economical when it comes to the space required.

The state-of-the-art ship will undertake a wide variety of duties. These will range from data collection and fish stock sampling to the deploying and retrieval of ROVs, buoys, ocean landers, autonomous ocean gliders, AUVs and other equipment.

Worldwide delivery
Barke® flap rudders can be found installed on other specialist vessels including the UK’s 90m RRS James Cook research ship and the MN Colibri, a unique RoRo vessel built to transport launcher components for the Ariane 5 and Soyuz heavy-lift space launch vehicles. DMC also supplied the complete steering system for Australia’s recently delivered 160-metre, Research and Supply Vessel (RSV) Nuyina, including full-spade rudders, steering gear and control systems. Last, a Barke® rudder and piston-type steering gear were delivered for the Multi-Purpose Research Vessel of NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) in New Zealand.

Worlds first In-Air Offshore Vessel Power & Charging System Completes Successful Harbour Trials

The UK’s leading marine electrical engineering company – MJR Power and Automation, together with their project partners Blackfish Engineering and Tidal Transit – announce announces the successful harbour trials of its platform mounted automated offshore power and charging system, set to revolutionise the marine sector by enabling the transition to heavy hybrid and fully electric vessels for zero emission operations.

The harbour trials have been successfully carried out at the Port of Blyth – the UK’s premier offshore wind energy support base – using the TIA Elizabeth Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) owned and operated by Tidal Transit.

The set-up at the port replicated the installation of the offshore power and charging system on an offshore wind turbine and/or substation validating the safe connection, mooring, and charging of battery bank installed on the CTV.

With safety embedded throughout the system, all interconnection, mooring, automation, monitoring, and safety systems, including wireless communication and emergency disconnection were vigorously tested and validated during the trails.

Designed to convert energy delivered directly from the offshore wind farm , the offshore power and charging system will enable all heavy hybrid and electric crew transfer vessels and other offshore support vessels to connect in the field to a 100% green energy source generated directly by offshore wind turbines for the efficient, safe and reliable transfer of power.

It will also enable offshore power to be supplied to other support vessels allowing them to turn off their diesel generators whilst standing by, in the same way that they can connect to shore power.

Speaking about the successful trial, Paul Cairns, Managing Director at MJR said: “Our offshore power and charging system is a ground-breaking innovation set to revolutionise the marine sector and which has huge potential to enable the industry to seamlessly transition to electrically operated CTV fleets.

“By providing a solution to power vessels and charge batteries in the field – primarily during periods when they would otherwise be idle – MJR’s offshore power and charging system will prove to be a key enabler for the large-scale deployment of eCTVs and larger electric hybrid vessels across the offshore sector.

“Put simply, if 50% of the UK’s CTV fleet converted to electric operation, this would eliminate approximately 131,100 tonnes of CO2 each year. These figures are staggering and highlight that such technology, and the adoption of it, will be pivotal in reducing emissions in the field and helping owners, operators and governments to achieve their net zero targets.”

“Also, without the funding support of the UK’s department for transport and delivery partner, Innovate UK, through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, we would not be leading the world in delivering this innovative technology and we are extremely grateful for their ongoing support and vision in delivering clean maritime technologies”.

With successful harbour trials now complete, MJR will now demobilise the equipment and prepare for installation on an operational offshore wind farm substation in the North Sea.

In addition to charging CTVs, with a maximum charging time of two hours, MJR are also developing a similar system for delivering higher powers for providing offshore power and charging for larger vessels, including Service Operations Vessels (SOVs).

Rotrex Group expands fleet following significant investment in UP40 winches

Rotrex Group – which provides winch hire, sales and support worldwide along with high level cradle and fall protection equipment services across the UK and Europe – has ramped up its fleet of rental winches after investing in a number of UP40 winches which are manufactured by OMAC in Italy.

The investment means the Group now offers customers the largest fleet of 4t rental marine winches in the UK. In the recent years, the UP40 has become a popular winch in Rotrex’s portfolio due to its exceptional capabilities and features. It is suitable for use across many industries – including telecoms and the wider utilities sector – for both above and below ground projects.

The UP40 boasts a maximum pull of 40kN, a maximum speed of 65m/min, a 12mm maximum rope capacity, and steel rope fitted up to 1300m. It has a light composite material canopy and is more streamlined than comparable winches, making it efficient for towing while allowing for more rope to be carried. With a superior speed of rope pull, it reduces man hours on site and delivers constant and reliable tension.
