Manuplas® supplies foam-filled barrel buoys to port in Southern England

Barrel buoys (also known as admiralty buoys) have traditionally been made in steel.  This can be problematic for operators due to:

  • Need for regular maintenance checks (at least once per year) to check for rust.  If there are signs of rust, this needs to be removed and the buoy repainted.  If the rust is not removed and repaired, there is a significant risk that the buoy will erode enabling water to seep inside, which ultimately will result in the buoy sinking
  • Marine growth that needs to be removed
  • Depending on the size of the buoy, they can be incredibly heavy to lift out of the water and may need specialist lifting equipment to lift safely

 
By recommending our lightweight barrel buoys produced using our foam-filled technology, a port in southern England will be able to avoid these issues.  This reduction in maintenance allows our customer to achieve long term cost and maintenance time savings. Using foam-filled technology minimises maintenance and provides self-fendering properties – if the buoys are hit when operational, the damage will be non-existent as the vessel will bounce off.  If the collision had been between a vessel and a steel buoy, there could have be significant damage.

Can mines really afford USD $125m in fire damage?

Fires and explosions pose a constant threat to the safety of miners and to the productive capacity of mines. Mine fires and explosions traditionally have ranked among the most devastating industrial disasters. The prevention and control of these in mines is fundamental. 

On a mine site, fire hazards may occur in and around process plants, underground conveyors, static and mobile plants, draglines, workshops, substations, monitored control rooms and switch rooms. All mines have highly expensive and mission-critical equipment that typically operate day and night under extremely hostile conditions: vast, remote, and difficult to access environments, especially underground. In many cases fixed fire suppression systems are the preferred systems installed to protect the high value assets, to safeguard the operators and to guarantee business continuity. 

Fire is dangerous. Fire is expensive. Is there a price for safety?

Below are several examples of fire incidents in the mining industry between 2013-2019 and their associated property damage and business interruption and business interruption costs*:
 

  • Fire in a benefaction plant – USD120m
  • Hot work failure – USD65m
  • Conveyor fire – USD60m

It can be argued that the competitive nature of the free-market places great pressure on the fire industry to deliver systems which minimally comply with, rather than exceed, the regulations. Too often fire protection is seen as a cost – not a vital investment for business continuity – let alone to save lives. 

High value assets such as critical mining infrastructure, may have catastrophic results in the event of downtime or shutdown due to fire. The risk far exceeds the cost of choosing minimal compliance, instead of advanced real-time monitoring systems. The cost of damage to reputational integrity as a result of downtime far exceeds the cost of integrating a real-time monitoring system.

Fire safety is still an “ungoverned space” 

In terms of fire extinguishing systems there exist 2 broad categories: sprinkler systems and liquefied gaseous systems such a clean agents FM-200®, Novec™1230 or CO2.  The former can suffer leakage, but the latter can cause greater damage given its physical pressures. Regulations require that the extinguishing agent stored in cylinders must be checked annually. The traditional method requires turning off the system, dismantling, and weighing each cylinder. Thorough testing can take hours and several qualified, trained personnel.

Anecdotes of bad practice
 

  • Low labour rate servicing crews being unskilled, unreliable, and untrained
  • Disreputable companies randomly checking a few cylinders and placing “tested stickers” on the rest of the untested ones

These issues risk the integrity of mining operations, because, in the event of fire, there may be an insufficient agent to extinguish it. For such safety-critical operations, these systems should be permanently monitored. Yet they remain unsupervised and unmonitored 364 days a year until their annual certification check.

Case Study: Zambia Copper Mine switches to Ultrasonic Level Sensor
 

  • One company who researched the market to find an easier, accurate and more efficient method for inspecting their fire system is a copper mining project in Zambia.
  • This well-established, growing mining company annually produces hundreds of thousands of tonnes of copper worldwide.

Manuplas® provide foam filled fenders to a port in Southern England

Our marine team recently supplied six foam filled orange fenders to a port in Southern England. They needed fenders able to produce a specific standoff distance between the quay wall and any vessel that may want to berth in the port.
 
The customer could not use inflatable pneumatic fendering, which is the traditional choice, as they are made to a standard size and our customer required flexibility in the diameter.  
 
Our marine team were able to provide a bespoke solution that ensured the customer was supplied with fenders to their exact requirements. We were able to do this as our manufacturing processes are flexible, which enabled us to produce products that had the precise dimensions required to produce the minimum standoff distance.  
 
To ensure the solution matched our customers requirements, our team calculated:

  • The precise energy absorption
  • Exact foam density
  • Reaction forces that met specifications

The SMS Group embraces the new norm – business builds as SMS Group diversifies and strengthens

In the midst of the most challenging global pandemic The SMS Group, headquartered in Southampton, has both adapted and expanded.

The SMS Group has an enviable reputation as specialists in ship repair, marine engineering and major fabrication projects in the Commercial Marine, Defence, Cruise and Superyachts sectors.

The period of lockdown has been tremendously challenging for many businesses, including The SMS Group.  

During this period the company furloughed a percentage of staff, focussed on the maintenance and support of critical, key, transportation and infrastructure services, and continued to support UK Plc via the likes of Trinity House, UK Border Force and the Royal Navy, through both BAE Systems and Babcock International.

Referencing the deliverables during lockdown, Nicholas Warren, Commercial Director, said: “During lockdown we completed the delivery of a 24m aquaculture workboat to Malta, several aggregates refits, and several major packages of works on both HM Naval Base Devonport and HM Naval Base Portsmouth.  

“We managed to keep the shipyard in Lowestoft trading positively, and delivered critical support to many ports and harbours, and ship operators.  

“We also moved quickly with regards to ship-side and shore-side sanitation, bio-fogging both vessels and terminals.”

Nick added about the challenges: “We adopted new working practices quickly, risk assessments and method statements obviously changed pretty quickly too.  

“Trading in a ‘COVID-secure’ environment remains a challenge but what’s impressed us the most is the camaraderie and teamwork; at all levels, from customers to colleagues, the industry as genuinely pulled together to work through these challenges and we’ve managed to work safely and efficiently.  

“We also increased customer communication, delivering six Business Continuity Updates across the three-month period.”

When talking about the future Nicholas concluded: “Our biggest worry is the pause in the Cruise market.  

“Defence, ports and harbours, tugs and ship operators all worked on through the pandemic.  
“The domestic and international passenger ferries are now back in business and we’re very much hoping the Cruise industry will follow shortly.  

“We’re very well diversified from a market segment perspective and as such we’ve ‘weathered the storm’ perhaps better than most?  

“Our year-end was last month and despite the pandemic, the business traded ahead of budget, all year, and we’ll post a good profit for the FY19/20 period. For us it’s now about returning to growth.  

“Several of our sites are now back at pre-pandemic revenue levels and we’ll be focusing appropriately on those that are tracking behind.  

“We remain optimistic about the future and very excited about developing further relationships in the Fit Out and Refurbishment space; we’re seeing plenty of opportunities for interior out-fit projects.”

The SMS Group completes numerous Fit Out and Refurbishment projects each year for the international Cruise market; in recent months the business has also been contracted to several Royal Navy projects and several passenger ferry projects.

Maersk Training in the UK joins forces with Babcock Marine Training to offer unique facility

Leading safety and technical training provider for the wind, oil and gas and maritime industries, Maersk Training in the UK (Maersk Training), has recently announced an agreement with Babcock Marine Training, part of the Babcock International Group, to develop a custom-built wind energy training facility in Paisley.

The facility which will launch Maersk Training into the Central belt of Scotland is the seventh facility which the organisation has opened across the UK, allowing the delivery of its market leading GWO (Global Wind Organisation) accredited courses for the renewables industry

The modular training unit, an innovative and unique design using recycled and highly modified freight containers, offers quick deployment and a solution to take training capabilities to clients, removing the need for delegate travel offering a safer solution in the current climate of COVID-19. This on-site solution allows for a safer learning experience, promoting a positive atmosphere amongst learners allowing them to focus on enhancing their safety skills.

The concept has already been tried and tested for the renewables industry in the North West of England, providing delegate training on the Walney Wind Farm, and in Taiwan, where the modular unit was deployed to support the construction and development of a state-of-the-art wind energy training facility. The Paisley facility has been purpose-built to deliver a wide range of GWO accredited courses including GWO Basic Safety Training (Onshore), GWO Advanced Rescue and GWO Slinger Signaller.

James Costello, Senior Sales Manager, UK Renewables at Maersk Training, said: “In spite of the challenges that 2020 has presented, the wind energy sector has continued to grow. The expansion of both offshore and onshore wind in Scotland will increase job opportunities and boost the economy.
