World’s First Carbon-Free Ammonia Powered Vessel

Amony, a provider of ammonia-to-power solutions, today announced that the world’s first carbon-free, ammonia-powered marine vessel successfully completed its maiden voyage.

The NH₃ Kraken, a tugboat retrofitted with Amogy’s ammonia-to-electrical power system, sailed on a tributary of the Hudson River, upstream from New York City.

This demonstration is a significant step towards reducing global carbon emissions and moving the maritime industry closer to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) target of net-zero emissions by 2050. It proves both the viability of Amogy’s technology and the potential of ammonia as a carbon-free maritime fuel, an important addition to the marine renewable energy solution.

How it works

Amogy’s patented ammonia-to-electrical power system splits, or “cracks,” liquid ammonia into its base elements of hydrogen and nitrogen.

The hydrogen is then funneled into a fuel cell, generating high-performance power with zero carbon emissions. This technology offers a sustainable, clean energy solution, tailored for hard-to-abate sectors like maritime shipping, as well as stationary power generation applications.

During this demonstration, the NH₃ Kraken was fueled with green ammonia, produced entirely with renewable energy, further reducing its carbon footprint.

Vast Potential of Ammonia

The global shipping industry emits close to 1 billion tons of greenhouse gasses per year, equivalent to the emissions of a G7 country like Germany or Japan. The successful voyage of the NH₃ Kraken validates the vast potential ammonia holds for transforming the shipping industry, and other sources of power generation in the future.

Ammonia is the world’s second most produced chemical, with around 20 million tons moving around the globe through 200 ports each year. Shifting the industry mindset to use it as a fuel is achievable, and can happen at an accelerated pace.

ADIPEC offsets carbon emissions of 2023 exhibition

ADIPEC has moved forward on its sustainability journey by reporting its 2023 carbon emissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and offsetting some of its 2023 edition emissions through the UNFCCC Carbon Offset Platform.

As part of ADIPEC’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions, carbon credits equivalent to a set portion of the emissions produced by ADIPEC 2023 were purchased through the UNFCCC Carbon Offset Platform for credits in two projects in India.

Carbon Offset Projects in India

The projects, one in the city of Hazira and the other in the village of Jegurupadu, work to support the global transition from coal reliance to less emissions-intensive natural gas, as part of the ‘fossil fuel switch’ that the energy transition requires. The projects help in the conservation of depleting fossil fuels while also avoiding the intense carbon emissions of coal-fuelled power plants.

Carbon Footprint Reduction Strategy

ADIPEC began its emissions reduction journey in 2021 when DMG Events signed the Net Zero Carbon Events pledge, a joint commitment across the events and meetings industry to achieve the targets laid out in the Paris Climate Accord. In 2023, ADIPEC furthered its obligation to sustainability when it became a signatory of the Climate Neutral Now Pledge from the UNFCCC, through which ADIPEC is committed to report its emissions footprint annually.

In 2023, ADIPEC announced details of its carbon footprint reduction strategy, which included the following measures:

Development of the ADIPEC Carbon Management Plan to monitor, report, and offset emissions.
Development and use of a carbon tracking tool for ADIPEC vendors/suppliers.
Devehttps://www.adipec.com/opment of a detailed Exhibitor Manual and Guidelines in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, to encourage our more than 2,200 exhibitors to adopt environmentally responsible behaviours and practices.

Maximising reuse of materials on site, including temporary structures, equipment, and signage.
Integrating waste segregation and recycling facilities, resulting in 6.58 tonnes of cardboard and paper recycling.
Use of solar energy to partially power external tent structures.

A highlight of Inland and Coastal’s presence at this year’s SIBS 2024 (Southampton International Boat Show) will be a special talk by Jess Allen, a PhD student from Plymouth University, who will be discussing the ecological advantages of the award-winning Living Seawalls.

Living Seawalls

Living Seawalls is a Sydney-based company that designs modular panels that mimic foreshore and intertidal habitats and can be affixed to harbour walls and marinas, earning the company a trove of awards for design, innovation and biodiversity – and was also named finalist for Prince William’s prestigious Earthshot Prize.

Living Seawalls represents a radical shift in coastal protection, actively reviving marine habitats by creating a haven for invertebrates, seaweeds, small fish and other marine fauna on the concrete infrastructures that form the foundations of many ports and harbours across the UK and Ireland.

Jumbo Offshore completes TP T&I scope at Yunlin Wind Farm

Jumbo Offshore has completed its TP (transition piece) T&I (transport & installation scope) on the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) in Taiwan under a contract with Yunneng Wind Power Co., Ltd. For its role on the project, Jumbo Offshore deployed its DP2 Heavy Lift Marine Crane Vessel Jumbo Javelin.

Reliable project execution

Prior to undertaking the project, Jumbo Offshore carried out extensive project preparations to ensure a smooth, reliable project execution.

Following this, Jumbo Javelin was outfitted in a project-specific set-up. This included the Jumbo Fly-Jib modular marine crane boom extension. This feature can be mounted on a Jumbo J-Class vessel to increase the lifting height. With this, the vessel was provided with the capability to lift the 27 m high TPs.

Jumbo Javelin performed the final TP installation on Friday, August 23. The vessel was loaded out with TPs in Kaohsiung, transporting up to four 450t TPs at one time. In total, Jumbo Javelin transported and installed 80 TPs during the project.

Proud safety record

Jumbo Offshore completed its scope ahead of schedule, contributing to the client’s target of completing the OWF before the end of 2024 and maintaining an excellent QHSE record and safety culture during the project execution.

Versatile execution

Water depths at the Yunlin OWF vary between 7 and 35m. The shallower water location are not suitable for installation in DP mode. Therefore, Jumbo Offshore switched between installation on DP and installation on anchors, making full use of the vessel’s versatility.

The Yunlin OWF is located in the Taiwan Strait, between 8 and 17 km from the coast of Taiwan. Covering an area 82km², the OWF comprises 80 WTG (wind turbine generators), able to provide up to 640 MW clean electricity, sufficient to power 600,000 Taiwanese households.

Designed and manufactured by Britlift, the Multilifter M180 is the most versatile modular beam on the market. The expanded portfolio and newly fitted-out premises will mean quicker response times and better shared knowledge so customers will be serviced more efficiently.

The investment in Erith follows LGH’s agreement with Rotrex in 2022 to use its base in Motherwell as a distribution centre. This has acted as springboard and has helped LGH to significantly grow its presence and reach across the Central Belt of Scotland.

Two industry leading experts in Lifting Equipment under one roof

The new Erith site has 11 members of full-time staff. This number includes the transfer of all team members from the legacy depots as well as four new recruits. The warehouse and its operations are headed up by Paul Skingle, an experienced service centre manager with 17 years experience in winching and lifting equipment who recently joined the business. He will report to Paul Smith, UK National Operations Manager.

Paul Smith said: “We have been carefully planning the new Erith site for a while and we believe it will be a strategic turning point for both LGH and Rotrex as we bring these two industry-leading businesses under one roof. Its location near the M25 means that we can serve London and the whole of Southern England far more efficiently and – most importantly – deliver more choice and a more rounded offering to our customers.

Paul added: “This investment also includes industry-leading facilities for the testing and maintenance of our winches and lifting equipment – all of which will be handled by our in-house, LEEA trained engineers. We are excited to see the impact the move makes, and we are confident that it will deliver considerable added value to both the business and our customers.”
