Cammell Laird use Taylor Hobson Alignment Technology on The RRS Sir David Attenborough

Shipbuilders and marine engineers Cammell Laird recently won the £150m contract to build the Sir David Attenborough polar research vessel against fierce international competition. When it came to alignment of the ships propeller shafts to the marine engine they turned to another UK company, Taylor Hobson, and used their Micro Alignment Telescope to ensure precision alignment of their propulsion machinery.

Cammell Laird has a long history and wide experience in the shipbuilding, conversion and repair markets and understands the complex nature of the build and the polar specifications required. A robust design combined with optimum fuel efficiency is essential in propellor and engine design and alignment is a vital factor, since any distortion can lead to vibration and wear.

The Taylor Hobson range has been used for applications such as alignment of propulsion machinery since the late 1930s. The range includes Micro Alignment Telescopes (used for checking and setting straightness and alignment) which are typically used to align the position of the ships engine in relation to the propellor shafting and stern tube. Other tasks include alignment of the engine to the stern tube and alignment of rudder bearings.

Despite the advent of laser techniques, the Taylor Hobson Alignment Telescope remains a popular choice throughout the shipbuilding and repair sector due to its’ high accuracies and ability to withstand harsh environments. The Alignment Telescope has the advantage of being capable of running entirely without power since it is essentially based on sound mechanical and optical principles. Equally, this established technology can be enhanced with the use of new CCTV and CCD technology for enhanced magnification and remote viewing when working in difficult locations, allowing a number of operators to view the image at the same time and to digitise the telescope allowing computer processing of the measurements.

The Alignment Telescope is sold around the world through Taylor Hobson’s worldwide network – the equipment is also sent on hire for individual jobs during refurbishment projects.

Damen Shipyards Cape Town contracted for CSD 250 for Dredging Africa

Dredging Africa (Pty) Ltd has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) for the delivery of a Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 250. Due to Damen’s policy of series building standardised vessels, the CSD was in stock and available for fast delivery in March 2018. This will be the first Damen CSD to operate in South Africa. The contract for the CSD came about after Dredging Africa signed a memorandum of understanding with DSCT at the yard’s first African Dredging Seminar, held in October last year.

Mr Arend van de Wetering, Director of Dredging Africa said: "We are very happy to be working with DSCT for the delivery of this dredger. From the outset, the collaboration has been excellent; Damen have gone out of their way to create the opportunity for this project to be realised. They really thought along with us to create a solution that matches exactly our needs – including looking at various financing options that are available."

Damen Product Director Dredging Olivier Marcus concurred, saying, "We are very pleased to be delivering this CSD to Dredging Africa. The cooperation between us has been very fruitful and we are looking forward very much to delivering the vessel in a short space of time. Dredging has enormous potential to open up new trading opportunities in South Africa and we are proud to play our part in supporting this."

DSCT decided to host the African Dredging seminar, understanding the importance dredging has for South Africa and the wider region. CSDs such as this also have the capability to maintain reservoirs ensuring the supply of drinking water in the country. Damen has previously delivered a number of products from the Damen Dredging Equipment (DDE) portfolio to Africa. Dredging Africa intends to use its dredger on multiple contracts in South Africa and Southern Africa at large.

Damen’s CSD portfolio features a range of standardised dredgers often built for stock and customised for individual client requirements via the application of standard options. Damen has optimised its designs based on user experience. As a result, the CSDs offer an outstanding high production to low operating cost ratio, extreme ergonomics, low noise & vibration and a layout aimed at ease of maintenance. The modular nature of the design means that the CSD 250 can be transported easily, in just three containers, to the remotest of locations.

DSCT will be on hand to support Dredging Africa in the ongoing service and maintenance of the CSD, including with the supply of spare parts from stock in order to ensure maximum uptime of the dredger.

Damen Maaskant scores second twin-rigger contract

Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam has secured another contract to build a twin-rig fly shooting fishing trawler; this time for brothers Rense and Johannes de Boer. This is Damen Maaskant’s second fishing trawler contract in as many months, following close behind the contract to build the 32-metre long Spes Nova that was signed in November.

Although the new vessel, to be named Meindert Senior, will have the same Vripack naval architects design as the Spes Nova, it displays some major differences. At 31 metres long with a beam of 9 metres, the Meindert Senior will be able to operate with a gross tonnage of less than 400 tonnes. Furthermore, the new vessel will have a conventional diesel propulsion configuration.

An established relationship
This will not be the first Damen-built vessel in Rense and Johannes de Boer’s fleet, as Eric Moerkerk, Deputy Director at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam, explains: "The De Boer brothers already have two vessels from us: the LT60 and the UK195."

"In fact, our relationship with their family goes back even further as their father built a cutter here 25 years ago. So we are extremely pleased to be working with them again with this new trawler."

Natural trim
The relationship with designer and naval architect Vripack has been taken to the next level as they were the creatives behind the bigger sister vessel as well. "By rearranging the traditional lay-out we ensured that the ship trims as naturally as possible. Fishing vessels traditionally trim aft a bit, especially with a full hold. This adversely affects the ideal streamline of the vessel, resulting in less comfort at sea and higher fuel consumption. The weight components are more evenly distributed under varying conditions when placing the wheelhouse and the fish hold a bit forward," explains Ierring Faber, Naval Architect at Vripack.

Construction of Meindert Senior’s hull will take place in Poland, followed by outfitting at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam. Delivery is scheduled for Q2 2019.

Damen signs contract with Canada’s Group Ocean for two Modular Multi Cats

Workboats’ modular design enables easy transportation to oil sands project in northern Canada

Recently, at the New Orleans Workboat Festival in the United States, Damen Shipyards Group signed a contract with Canada-based Group Ocean for the delivery of two Modular Multi Cats 1205. The vessels, which are made of standard, container sized units for easy transportation anywhere in the world, will serve as dredging support vessels on an oil sands project in the north of Canada. The contract fits with Group Ocean’s vision to become a world class organisation and a trusted partner for its clients.

Ocean, is a major Quebec society in the maritime industry, operates mainly in Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and now in Western Canada. Ocean has nearly 850 employees and is one of the largest providers of marine solutions in Canada whose core business is towing, pilot boat, marine services, equipment rental and dredging.

The location of the oil sands tailings ponds upon which the Multi Cats will work is inland and not easily accessible by water. The modular nature of the vessels means that they can be easily transported to site by truck and then quickly assembled for operation on location. The modularity of the design also makes any future relocations straightforward.

Damen has a strong relationship with Group Ocean, dating back to 2011. This is the second contract between the two companies, whose shared approach and philosophy ensures a smooth, dynamic and complementary flow of work.. The synergy between both companies has been proven during the first join project for the construction of Ocean’s first TSHD which Damen was providing all technical support and the steel/component package for the construction of this vessel at Ocean’s shipyard.

Tommy Theriault, Business Development Director for Ocean Marine Works and Dredging, explained: "In addition to the ease with which we can transport these vessels to inaccessible locations quickly and cost-effectively, Damen’s standardized shipbuilding process meant that they already had one of the vessels on stock for extremely fast delivery. It will also allow us more flexibility for future development across Canada."

Because one of the Multi Cats was in stock already, the first delivery will take place in February – less than three months following the signing of contract. The second vessel, which is being built at Damen Shipyards Kozle in Poland, will follow in Q2 2018.

Damen Regional Sales Manager North American, Daan Dijxhoorn said, "The speed with which we are able to deliver these vessels, as well as the convenience that results from modular construction, really goes to show the unique advantages of standardised shipbuilding as practiced at Damen."

The Damen Multi Cat has is a versatile workboat with an extensive track record in many sectors. It is used for towing and anchor-handling, dive support, marine engineering, offshore energy operations and for dredging and dredging support operations.

Mr Dijxhoorn concluded, saying, "We look forward to delivering these Multi Cats to Group Ocean and have every confidence in their ability to perform excellently in the work ahead of them. We wish Group Ocean and their clients the very best with these vessels."

Happy 150th Birthday to B Hepworth

Still going strong and looking to the future, Midlands based manufacturing company B Hepworth & Co Ltd is celebrating its 150 years anniversary in 2018.

B Hepworth & Co Ltd was founded in 1868 by Mr Benjamin Hepworth, originally as a manufacturer of chemicals for the carpet manufacturing industry in Kidderminster. The Eddy family acquired the business in the early 1900’s and continued with the business, however during the 1950’s and 1960’s environmental pressures of operating a chemical plant in a town centre, coupled with commercial pressures led to the company looking at a different future direction; the design and manufacture of windscreen wiping systems.

In 1988 Jonathan Eddy (Hepworth’s current CEO) became Managing Director of B Hepworth & Co Ltd and was responsible for a strategic change of direction, taking the company from its traditional UK Commercial Vehicle and Bus markets to the Marine and then Rail markets, targeting development of those export markets.

In 2004 Jonathan Eddy concluded the successful purchase of Hepworth’s largest competitor, Wynstruments Ltd. and then in 2009 a Fabrications company was bought, adding to the company’s portfolio of services. De Boer/Dutch Dredging and Iskes Towage take delivery of ASD 2310 SD at Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld

French flag vessel to carry out harbour towing work in French Guiana

On 9th January, Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld delivered an ASD Tug 2310 SD (shallow draught), named Papillon, to De Boer Remorquage SARL, a subsidiary company of Dutch Dredging (Baggerbedrijf De Boer) and Iskes Towage & Salvage. Damen has customised the ASD for a 12-year contract with Grand Port Maritime de Guyane in the ports of Cayenne and Kourou in French Guiana.

The tug’s primary function will be the assistance of vessels entering and leaving the ports. She can also provide emergency assistance, such as fire-fighting, survey activities and small transports. Additionally, the vessel is built under French flag rules, ready for operation in the French overseas department.

The ASD has been designed to meet the requirements of the end client – Grand Port Maritime de Guyane – which contributed to the design with its own consultant, Hydro GC. The ASD Tug is Damen’s first delivery to Dutch Dredging, though Iskes Towage & Salvage has a number of Damen vessels in its fleet.

Managing Director of Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld Jos van Woerkum said, "The collaboration with all parties during the design and construction of this vessel has been excellent. Working together closely, we have been quickly able to identify the full scope of requirements and turn the versatile Damen ASD 2310 SD design into something that exactly meets the needs of the end user. We wish De Boer Remorquage SARL and Grand Port Maritime de Guyane every success with Papillon."

In a statement, the Managing Directors of Dutch Dredging and Iskes Towage said, "Due to the extensive demands of the contract, Damen had to cope with some tough challenges during construction in order to meet all requirements and limitations. It has certainly not always been easy, but they managed to meet every challenge and delivered a vessel that perfectly matches our and our clients’ requirements. We are also pleased that during the entire construction process a very good cooperation with all other parties involved – our client Grand Port Maritime de la Guyane, their maritime experts Earthcase and Hydro GC as well as the French maritime authorities ‘Direction de la Mer’ and the French customs office – has led to a smooth delivery of the vessel."

Joining Papillon in French Guiana later this year, will be a WID 2915 Hybrid Tug. Damen is configuring the vessel with dredging capabilities using the air and water injection dredging method (AIRSET). Following delivery, both vessels will undergo an official naming ceremony in French Guiana.

Digital Ship is excited to return to Singapore, with the next in our series of Cyber Resilience Forums, taking place during APM on 15 March 2018.

Cyber security is high on our agenda with ever-increasing threats being proven to disrupt business continuity. Real life examples in the maritime industry, and related sectors; including ports, terminals and the supply chain, clearly demonstrate the impact of cyber-attacks.

An up-to-date insight into the cyber-threat landscape is imperative to protect our business processes and data from attacks, damage or security breaches. Ship operators need to analyse potential risks, explore legal aspects, and incorporate cyber resilience into their daily operations in order to organise business operations to reduce vulnerability.

In this era of the connected ship, with developments such as the cloud, IoT, electronic data exchange in the logistic chain, electronic navigation systems, we rely increasingly on technology, which makes cyber resilience business critical. So, how do we embed this into the maritime organisation, and how do we incorporate cyber security into all our systems and operations? If incidents occur, how do we respond and make the necessary contingency or recovery plans? We will also investigate regulations and guidelines to develop a safe, compliant, cyber capability in shipping.

The human factor is often claimed to be the weakest link. Ship operators need to increase cyber awareness both in the office and on-board. In this Forum, we will discuss ways to mobilise internal commitment, set up training and incorporate cyber awareness into daily procedures.

Successful naming and launch ceremony for TSHD DC ORISANT by Royal IHC

Royal IHC successfully named and launched the multi-purpose 5,450m3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) DC ORISANT, for a joint venture between Den Herder (Reimerswaal Dredging) and Group de Cloedt. The ceremony took place on 11 January at IHC’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands and was performed by Mrs Ria den Herder, the wife of Mr Bert den Herder (owner of Reimerswaal Dredging).

"The contract was awarded on 8 August 2016, and the keel-laying took place on 17 July 2017,” says IHC Account Director Benelux André Kik. “IHC is proud to build this versatile gravel hopper that it suitable for both the dredging and offshore wind market. The vessel is going to be an important benchmark for the industry.”

“The DC ORISANT is a TSHD with full system redundancy and can perform a wide range of projects. This is due to its integrated design and the high standard of dredging equipment on board,” says Mr Bert den Herder. “The dredge installation has been configured to dredge marine aggregates for the construction industry. The TSHD is also highly suitable for performing other projects, such as maintenance dredging and beach nourishment.”

In addition, the DP2 installation will allow the DC ORISANT to perform support activities during the construction of offshore wind farms. It is the first complete diesel electric aggregate dredger on the market, which enables it to sail at the most economical speed in all situations. DC ORISANT will be handed over to her owners in mid-2018.

ASAP expands to Fareham

ASAP are one of the UK's largest suppliers of marine components and equipment. Since the acquisition of ASAP Supplies by Arleigh International in June 2017, and the resources available from the UK holding company Euro Car Parts, ASAP Supplies have some very ambitious expansion plans during 2018 and 2019.

With its base in Beccles Suffolk, ASAP Supplies are embarking on opening a series of UK branches, most of which will be based within ECP facilities. The first branch to open is ASAP South, operating from the ECP facility in Fareham, Hampshire.

Cheryll Gill, Head of Business Development for ASAP Supplies comments that 'We have always tried to pass on our award winning customer services to the marine industry, irrespective of location.
