Cement Carrier Lelie C returns to Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf for additional tank capacity

Two years after its previous visit the Lelie C, owned by Cebo Marine, has left Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf (Oranjewerf) following a full maintenance programme and a significant upgrade to its cement carrying capacity. The three-week stopover included a full survey and a range of repairs and maintenance to prepare her for more years of reliable service.

These works included fitting a new fuel filter system, renewing the hydraulic pipes for the hatch crane, and repairing the propeller while at the same time replacing the seals and liner for its shaft and changing the shaft seals for the bow thruster. The hull and topsides also received a fresh coat of paint.

The main project, however, was the installation of eight new cement silos, each with a capacity of 40m³. These tanks were previously fitted on the VOS Symphony, another regular visitor to Oranjewerf, prior to it going for scrap.

Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf removed the tanks, refurbished them and then installed them on board the Lelie C. Prior to their installation, Oranjewerf fabricated a silo foundation and fitted it in the vessel’s hold. 80-metres of stiffeners were also welded into place in the double bottom tanks to provide the necessary support.

Meanwhile, approximately 100m² of grating walkway was fabricated and fitted on the deck to give access to the manifolds on each of the new silos. The supply / discharge and air pipe system for the two existing silos was also refurbished to accommodate the new capacity.

“This was a big project,” commented Jeen van der Werf, Commercial Manager at Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf. “Two years ago we installed the original tanks from the Ritske, a vessel belonging to the same client, and now we have repeated the process again, this time on a much larger scale. The Lelie C began her life as a general cargo vessel, but now her transformation into a cement carrier is complete.

“Cebo Marine is a local and regular customer, continued Jeen van der Werf, “and the excellent levels of cooperation between all involved ensured a smooth project. The only element we could not control was the wet Dutch weather, but the provision of some additional dry boiler suits ensured that our flexible and motivated yard team kept the works on schedule.”

MAN OVERBOARD Prevention & Recovery Workshop aims to reduce the risk caused by people falling in the water on vessels of all sizes. Fast moving sessions highlight the hard lessons learned from recent fatalities. Viable solutions are simple and effective. All sectors are invited to participate in this unique one day event that is being held at the Grand Harbour, Southampton UK on 17 April 2018.

Workshop organiser, John Haynes, said, ‘We focus on current issues, plus emerging areas of concern that operators may need to face tomorrow. In a changing world the use of technology is increasing for many organisations, but safety remains high on the agenda for professional mariners. Preventing and dealing with man overboard situations is relevant to all people going on, or working near to water.’

Using the latest knowledge from around the world this group will identify the effectiveness of traditional man overboard (MOB) methods versus innovative systems. For professional organisations the unique knowledge gained from presentations and networking sessions will help to shape long term decisions that lead to improvements for current operations, along with procurement of next generation boats and equipment.

Workshop topics cover MOB prevention, including improved operating procedures and use of ‘fit for purpose’ personal protective equipment (PPE). Personnel transfer looks at preventing MOB incidents and injury between vessels. Primary reactions highlight effective responses to MOB situations including fast location of casualty. Solutions range from simple and effective crew lookout to complex electronic devices.

MOB communication starts with returning to the person in the water rapidly then expands to engaging shore side emergency services, air sea rescue and other vessels. Managing the casualty examines lifting onboard considering injuries, immediate treatment and the survival timeline. After effects of an MOB Incident range from personal care for the survivor and their family to legal issues for the employer.

Attendees include commercial, professional and military end-user organisations, along with boat operators, boat builders, equipment manufacturers, naval architects, safety integrators, training organisations and legislators. Presentations are relevant to passenger vessels, pilot boats, police, patrol craft, survey vessels, work boats, superyacht tenders, military craft, search & rescue vessels, ports and marinas.

John Haynes added, ‘We have shaped this agenda by asking a dynamic industry group to share their confidential concerns about personal safety in the maritime workplace. This open approach generates burning questions with plenty of constructive discussions. Man overboard and death by drowning or exposure is still the prime risk for anyone that goes to sea. We simply aim to reduce that risk.’

Landau UK Launches ‘Lifecord’ – the lifecord you’ll never forget

Landau UK are delighted to be launching the new ‘Lifecord’ during London Boat Show 10th – 14th January 2018. The official press launch will be held at 11am on Wednesday 10th January on the Landau UK Stand LB076 at the London Boat Show. There will also be presentations during the Innovations Show on Friday 12th January at 1330 & 1515 in the Legends Theatre.

Lifecord is a newly designed kill cord providing the certainty and reliability of a tethered connection between a boat’s engine ignition kill switch and pilot, ensuring the vessel’s engine stops should the pilot be inadvertently thrown from the helm. However, unlike the typical passive kill cords commonly seen, Lifecord is a ‘smart’ kill cord incorporating detection technology designed to trigger an audible and visual warning alarm should Lifecord be connected to the boat’s kill switch but not the pilot, similar to the seatbelt warning in your car.

Lifecord’s uniquely designed Key and Clasp connector is comfortable to wear and can be operated easily even while wearing gloves. It also offers a secondary method of pilot connection using an ergonomically designed Lifejacket Key which can be permanently fitted to lifejackets. Pilot change and reconnecting Lifecord couldn’t be easier or safer.

Lifecord ensures that should a pilot leave the helm when the boat’s engine is ticking over in neutral, they are reminded to reconnect the cord when they return, also ensuring a pilot change results in the new pilot being reminded to connect. It alerts the skipper and other crew members alike, should the pilot not have connected the cord.

Lifecord detects whether or not it’s being worn. Should for any reason it become inadvertently looped back on itself with the Clasp and Key connected but without being worn round the user’s leg, if it’s connected to the vessel’s kill switch it will alarm.

The Lifecord will be distributed through Landau UK and will be available to purchase in March 2018.

Fourth Damen 3307 Patrol Vessel delivered to Homeland Integrated Offshore Services

Homeland Integrated Offshore Services Ltd (Homeland) of Lagos, Nigeria, has taken delivery of another Damen 3307 Patrol Vessel for operations in the offshore oil fields in the Gulf of Guinea. This takes the total delivered vessels/Guardians since the first arrived in early 2014 to four. Guardian 4 has joined its three sister ships in providing security services to the oil majors active in Nigeria’s territorial waters, together with additional support services including crew transfers and equipment deliveries.

Homeland is one of the few Government-approved, private maritime security companies operating in Nigeria with a valid MOU with the Nigerian Navy, and the arrival of the fourth Guardian adds significantly to its ability to meet its goal of providing turnkey security services that include deterrence of and intervention in piracy attacks, so as to make the offshore environment safer for the benefit of all legitimate stakeholders.

The Damen 3307 Patrol Vessel is a variant on Damen’s best-selling Fast Crew Supplier 3307. It applies all the benefits of the basic FCS 3307 design; a top speed of 30 knots, rapid acceleration and excellent seakeeping, and adds a range of special refinements including an armoured wheelhouse and internal safe haven and is intended to carry up to 16 military personnel and their equipment. How Dynamic Positioning can make your vessels work harder by keeping them on station

Dynamic Positioning enabled vessels such as PSV (Platform Support Vessels), OSV (Offshore Support Vessel), DSV (Diving Support Vessel), Ocean Research Vessels or any other type of vessel that require the ability to retain station and maintain bow heading without using anchors or other external system often rely on a computer driven solution that will automatically control numerous propulsion elements. These elements are primarily the bow and stern thrusters along with the main propulsion system, which maintain the vessel within a certain reference frame controlled by satellite (GPS).

The choice of propulsion system that would enable the desired smooth, fast and precise reaction was until now limited to either diesel electric or a fully hybrid propulsion system. Users were finding whilst these systems were extremely reliable and flexible, they were also complex and expensive to operate. The Twin Disc Quickshift clutch technology combined with an extension of the Twin Disc proprietary EC300 electronic control system called EC300DP allows dynamic positioning operation to standard diesel driven fixed pitch propellers, at a fraction of the cost and without the complexity.

The solution is based on an existing dynamic positioning system, engineered and supplied by a DP specialist, along with a standard diesel engine propulsion package, comprising of Twin Disc MGX marine reverse gears available from 250 to 2500Hp, standard shaftlines and fixed pitch propellers. Engine and gears are controlled by the Twin Disc EC300 electronic control system with an extended EC300DP module interfacing with most other DP systems currently available on the market.

The ability of the MGX clutches when combined with the EC300 and EC300DP enables the operator to execute a high number of clutch engagements. Slipping the clutch continuously at limited Rpm allows multiple manoeuvers as requested by the DP system. For the user, the combination of the MGX clutch and EC300DP reduces the propulsion system complexity of a DP enabled vessel, providing a cost effective solution without compromising on the accuracy of the vessels positioning or the reliability of the various components within the propulsion line.

Both the MGX Quick Shift Gears and EC300DP Electronic Controls with Dynamic Positioning are available in the UK via MIT.

Northern Diver expands commercial and offshore range

Lancashire-based Northern Diver, known for its range of specialist drysuits and diving equipment, has added several new lines to its range of products for commercial diving and offshore industries, including SOLAS approved equipment.

The firm already manufactures and supplies commercial diving equipment such as hot water suits for saturation diving in extreme cold and diver recovery harnesses.

Northern Diver has now added launch and recovery systems, recompression chambers, air distribution panels, communications systems, underwater tools and compressors to its range.

Similar expansion is being seen in the company's other business sectors, namely sport, rescue and military.
