Take A Seat On A Piece Of History at Maid of The Loch

Loch Lomond’s paddle steamer, Maid of the Loch, has welcomed its original buoyancy benches back on-board the historic ship. 

The buoyancy seats were part of the ship’s original marine lifesaving apparatus and were designed to float if the boat were to sink, giving passengers something to grab onto until help came.  Due to years of continuous weather exposure, the benches were subsequently in need of restoration as part of the Maid’s refurbishment project; and were transported to the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine where they were fully transformed. 

The seats have been put back to their former glory alongside a ‘lost’ seat that was discovered by a diver in 2014 and restored by a Maid volunteer.  They are now joined together and are currently situated on the rooftop deck where they can seat up to eight people. Guests to the Maid can sit and enjoy the Northly views around one of Scotland’s bonniest loch’s from Inchmurrin to Balloch Country Park.

John Beveridge, Director of the Loch Lomond Steamship Company, said: “We’re thrilled to have our buoyancy seats back onboard; they’re part of Maid legacy and it’s come just in time for our guests to enjoy the rest of the summer whilst enjoying the scenic views.

“The Scottish Maritime Museum did a fantastic job of restoring the seats to their original state and none of it would be possible without the help of our local company Galt Transport, who transported the two benches from Balloch Pier to the Museum.  Everyone who has contributed to the Maid, whether it be financially or through hard labour, significantly helps us reach our end goal to get her sailing again.”

David Mann, Director of the Scottish Maritime Museum, added: “It has been a joy and privilege to watch our boat building team of apprentices and trainees work on the buoyancy seat. The Scottish Maritime Museum has been supportive of the herculean task the team at the Maidhave undertaken and hope that we can continue to do so as they start work on the refit of this wonderful old vessel.”

The Maid currently operates as a static tourist attraction and has received a number of its original historic treasures back after putting out an amnesty appeal earlier this year, including the builder’s plaque and passenger ‘clicker’.

Charity Loch Lomond Steamship Company (LLSC)has worked tirelessly since 1996 to transform and restore the ship, with the aim of bringing her ‘back to life’ and fully operational once again.

RINA welcomes Coltraco Ultrasonics’ CEO to the Board of Trustees

Coltraco Ultrasonics Chief Executive, Carl Stephen Patrick Hunter, has been welcomed onto the Board of Trustees at The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), an internationally renowned professional institute at the heart of surface and sub-surface ship design. Formed in 1860 and established by Royal Warrant RINA occupies a central and essential role at the heart of British and global maritime with 70% overseas members and Consultative Status at the International Maritime Organisation.

Damen lays keel for 77-metre DAMEN SeaXplorer expedition yacht

On 27 July DAMEN SeaXplorer marked a milestone in the construction of the SeaXplorer 77 expedition yacht at a keel laying ceremony at Damen Shipyards Galati on the banks of the Danube. The owner attended the ceremony and welded the traditional coin on the keel. Following the hull building phase, the 77-metre luxury expedition yacht (253 ft) will arrive at Damen’s Vlissingen East yard in the Netherlands for completion and on-schedule delivery in Q4 2020. 

The SeaXplorer 77 is a customised design from the DAMEN SeaXplorer range. The yacht accommodates 12 guests in six suites with full custom interiors, featuring the finest luxury quality and finishing created by the owner’s choice of interior designer. The 25 crew, pilots and expedition staff operate the submersible, tenders, toys and two aircraft with a fully certified helideck and helicopter hangar. 

“The SeaXplorer 77 is the largest of two projects we are currently constructing from our SeaXplorer range,” comments Product Director Mark Vermeulen. “The SeaXplorer 77 shares the range’s core attributes: compliance with the IMO Polar Code, the long periods of autonomy at sea, and the crossover of superyacht luxury with professional capability. But the design incorporates many specific client requirements such as his passion for heliskiing.” 

The construction of SeaXplorer 77 leverages the Damen Shipyard Group’s global strength, combining:

  • Overall management from Damen’s yachting headquarters in Vlissingen in cooperation with superyacht builder AMELS, part of Damen since 1991
  • SeaXplorer design and engineering at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem in the Netherlands
  • Hull building at Damen Shipyards Galati, the largest of Damen’s 33 shipyards around the world. The yard’s almost 4,000 employees work on many of Damen’s most important projects to date including the 160-metre IMO Polar Code category-compliant Australian Antarctic Division research ship NUYINA. 

Final construction and outfitting at Damen’s Vlissingen East yard, located just a few kilometres from the Vlissingen City yard where AMELS operates. Does your radio comply with the NEW IMO REGULATIONS?

Regulations set down by IMO came into action at the beginning of this month. These regulations involved fire fighters radios used aboard vessels.

The regulation 
SOLAS regulation II-2/10.10.4 requires that: "For ships constructed on or after 1 July 2014, a minimum of two two-way portable radiotelephone apparatus for each fire party for fire-fighter's communication shall be carried on board. Those two-way portable radiotelephone apparatus shall be of an explosion-proof type or intrinsically safe. Ships constructed before 1 July, 2014 shall comply with the requirements of this paragraph not later than the first safety equipment survey after 1 July, 2018."

PSM’s Analogue Programmable Transmitters: Off to a flying start

PSM Instrumentation are delighted to announce that their latest product, the Analogue Programmable Transmitter (APT) is now fully certified and has received both Type Approval and Intrinsic Safety certification under IECEx and ATEX.

These 2 wire 4-20mA transmitters, which are suitable for marine, industrial process and hazardous area applications, have already demonstrated that they are fit for purpose and meet the required environmental and performance criteria.

The range includes both Level Transmitters and Pressure Transmitters. Versions are offered in stainless steel, hastelloy, and titanium for a range of specific applications including ballast tanks, fuel oils, fresh water, cargo overpressure, manifold pressure and a version with a special process connection for use in ODME systems. Maintenance and repair for Fugro Mercator at Damen Shiprepair Harlingen

Damen Shiprepair Harlingen (DSHL) has completed marine maintenance and repair works on the Fugro Mercator, a twin-hulled survey vessel operated by Fugro.

Fugro Mercatoris a 42.35-metre survey vessel deployed in some of the most challenging locations by Fugro for bathymetric and geophysical surveys, cable and pipeline route surveys. The vessel’s visit to DSHL was a scheduled docking for maintenance and repair works.

The yard’s planned work sheet included overhauling most of the vessel’s equipment as well as upgrading its accommodation areas. This consisted of work on the main and auxiliary engines, thrusters and winches, and refitting the kitchen and dining areas.

During the docking it was decided to upgrade the hull in order to extend the life of the vessel for the time to come. The motivation for this decision was based on the fact that the Fugro Mercatoris considered a ‘one- off’ vessel in meeting the needs of the near shore geophysical industry.

100% focus
“Due to the extensive scope of the project, triggered by the modifications to the hull, a new delivery date of the vessel to the owner was agreed to both Damen and Fugro’s satisfaction,” states Arjan Sebel, Project Manager at DSHL. “But due to the excellent cooperation with Fugro and the commitment of the yard personnel, the works were completed within the newly agreed timeframe.”

“DSHL has proven to be a flexible and trustworthy partner. Their ability to incorporate the hull upgrade in a timely manner resulted in a successful project,” states Chris de Bruin, Vessel Superintendent at Fugro.

After working on several Fugro vessels over the years, DSC has established a strong relationship with them. “In terms of safety and working procedures, in particular, we know each other’s standards. This makes for a smoother docking period, allowing all involved to focus 100 per cent on the job at hand,” Mr Sebel concludes.

Damen Shipyards Group assumes operational control at Mangalia shipyard

To signify its first day of operations at Damen Shipyards Mangalia in Romania, Damen held a modest ceremony at the yard on Monday, July 23rd. The celebrations mark Damen’s successful completion of the transaction with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) for the Mangalia shipyard, formerly known as Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries (DMHI). The yard, which will be renamed Damen Shipyards Mangalia, will be operated as a joint venture with the Romanian Government. Damen will assume operational control.

The yard is located on the Black Sea coast, has three drydocks with a total length of 982 metres and 1.6 kilometres of berthing space. The docks, with a width of 48 and 60 metres, will provide Damen with capacity to cater for larger maritime vessels and structures. As such, this move represents a strategic complement to Damen’s current shipyard portfolio, with the possibility for the construction and conversion of larger, high-end, and complex ferries, offshore construction vessels, etc. The yard’s total area of approximately 1 million m2makes it the largest yard in the Damen Shipyards Group.

The celebration introduced the Damen Shipyards Mangalia management team under the leadership of managing director Chris Groninger to the yard's employees.
 
Speaking at the event Damen Shipyards Group executive board member Mr. Eggink, CFO, said, “We will face a challenging period, considering the yard’s current condition. However, with the full support of the Romanian Government, 2MMS, the shipyard’s experienced workforce, and the local community, Damen aims to restore the financial health of the yard, stabilize employment and pursue fitting commercial opportunities internationally that will contribute to rebuilding activity levels. In the meantime, Damen will facilitate a smooth transition and keep talented and skilled resources meaningfully employed.”

According to the newly appointed managing director of Damen Shipyards Mangalia, Mr. Groninger, “The impressive shipyard facilities and in-depth shipbuilding knowledge and craftsmanship in Mangalia, in combination with the design and commercial power of Damen, should position the venture for a successful future.”

Strong presence
Damen’s commitment to the Romanian shipbuilding industry is well established. The company has owned and operated Damen Shipyards Galati since 1999. This yard has been responsible for some of the group’s most significant vessel deliveries in recent years.

The commencement of operations at Damen Shipyards Mangalia also indicates the strength and geographical scope of Damen’s global network of shipbuilding and repair yards.

Goodchild Marine celebrate bumper year of success at Seawork

Boat builders Goodchild Marine have branded Seawork 2018 the best yet. During the three-day show, the Norfolk-based company celebrated two handovers, a new contract and the company’s 40th anniversary.

News that Goodchild Marine Boat Builders will build the UK’s first ORC 136.HY hybrid pilot boat for the Port of London Authority was also highlighted by Tony Birr, Business Development Manager, who gave a presentation on hybrid power.

And Alan Goodchild, Managing Director, was presented with British Marine’s Peter Millward Award for his voluntary contribution to BM associations, after serving as chairman of the Commercial Marine Association for eight years.

Peter Millward owned Teddesley Boat Company and was the chairman of the Association of Pleasure Craft Operators (APCO), which he led into British Marine.

APCO started life as a standalone association, but was renamed during a re-brand as British Marine Inland Boating, which represents the interests of the members involved in inland boat hire operations and supporting services.

Peter also restructured the dormant British Marine Federation Midlands Association and became chair, before he sadly died of cancer.

Alan said: “I was very honoured to be presented with the award during Seawork. Peter Millward made a real difference during his marine career and it is humbling to think that British Marine feel that I am worthy of such an accolade.”

Seawork saw Goodchild Marine showcase the ORC 136 pilot boat on the pontoon, the first of its kind in the country, which was officially handed over to Estuary Services Limited.

Also displayed was a 14.5-metre aluminium Crew Transfer Vessel, received by Commercial Rib Charter.

A new order from Briggs Marine to build two further ORC 136 pilot boats was announced, along with a drinks reception to mark the partnership between the two companies.

During the event Goodchild Marine held an anniversary dinner to celebrate its milestone year with partners and collaborators.
Steve Pierce, General Manager of Goodchild Marine, said 2018 had been one of the best years in business so far.

“We invested in a new stand this year to mark our 40th anniversary and it was well worth it – Alan’s award was the icing on the cake and thoroughly deserved.

“There was a continual hive of activity during the show, lots of positive interaction and we are now looking forward to engaging with people about various projects that we may be able to assist with.”

Norfolk boat builder to help revolutionise industry with groundbreaking hybrid pilot boat

The Port of London Authority (PLA) has ordered the UK’s first hybrid pilot boat from Goodchild Marine Services Limited in a move that is set to underpin dramatic environmental performance improvements.

The vessel, set to completely change the face of the pilot boat industry by drastically reducing the release of greenhouse gases into the environment, will be constructed by the innovative Norfolk boat builder.

The ORC 136.HY, a parallel hybrid pilot boat, will combine both diesel and electric power and has been designed to be completely emission-free when operating in electric mode.

The PLA has placed the order as it starts to deliver on the commitments in its recently published Air Quality Strategy for the tidal Thames – also the first of its kind for any UK Port.

Among the 18 proposals for action is a commitment to encourage the installation of green technology.

Goodchild Marine Services Limited, a family-run business in Burgh Castle, near Great Yarmouth – whose ORC flagship range lends itself to incorporating hybrid power – is partnering with EP Barrus for the “Yanmar” engines, and transmission specialists, Marine and Industrial Transmissions Limited for the “Transfluid” Hybrid system, to deliver a plug-in diesel hybrid pilot boat.

The hull will be based on the established ‘ORC’ design, developed by naval architects Pantocarene and adapted by Goodchild Marine for the UK market.

ORCs feature a unique ‘beak’ bow design, which gives it unmatched all-weather capability.

The new hybrid vessel is due for delivery spring 2019.

PLA Chief Executive, Robin Mortimer, said: “We are in the environmental vanguard in the UK ports sector – following the first green tariff and first air quality strategy, with the first hybrid pilot cutter order.  Introducing the hybrid boat is going to result in a major improvement in the environmental performance of our operations.

“We expect that through the power train, hull design and lower weight, the hybrid cutter will use less than 10% of the fuel used by our current pilot vessel, with carbon dioxide emissions similarly reduced. That should see us going from using 86,000 litres of fuel for our pilot cutter operations a year to around 7,000 litres.

“It’s fantastic that we have been able to partner with Goodchild Marine on this groundbreaking move for the UK ports sector.”

London is the UK’s second biggest port, handling around 50m tonnes of cargo annually; PLA pilots undertake more than 10,000 pilotage acts a year.

The new pilot cutter, which is expected to reach up to 15 knots under hybrid power, will be used by the PLA for the transfer of pilots to and from vessels in Gravesend Reach.

Alan Goodchild, Managing Director of Goodchild Marine Services Limited, said the company was delighted to respond to developing technology and market interest.

“We are extremely proud in our 40th anniversary year to have secured the contract to build what is thought to be the first hybrid pilot boat. We already have a working relationship in place with the PLA and we have drawn upon some of the most respected and talented partners in the industry to collaborate with in facilitating the project.

“Our flagship ORC range of pilot boats are extremely fuel efficient because the hull shape is light and has minimal drag, meaning the envelope of operating under hybrid power is greater.

“Providing the vessel is operated under electric mode for the majority of the time it will make a significant impact upon the carbon footprint.  Other than the generation of electricity through the national grid, there are no emissions. We are already witnessing low emission lorries and taxis, and diesel is being banned in some cities, so it makes sense that boats are next.

“There are lots of hybrid boats on the market, but in my opinion, not like this. It’s down to the application, the speed it must reach, where it operates and the time its working over the course of the day, which means it is a challenge to achieve.

“Passenger boats, such as ferries are low speed on a pre-determined duty cycle and there are times they can be plugged in and re-charged.

“Pilot boats however, can be erratic on duty cycle and speed requirements, so to achieve 15 knots under hybrid power is a leap and perhaps why no-one else, to the best of my knowledge, has gone for it.”

Marine and Industrial Transmissions Limited (MIT) and its manufacturing and technology partners Transfluid will provide the hybrid system.

John Logue, Managing Director of MIT, said: “Our manufacturing and technology partners Transfluid have invested heavily in the development of our plug and play electric/hybrid system and have numerous reference projects around the world. However the PLA project is unique in that it is a first for a UK pilot vessel and will operate at speeds up to 15 knots in electric mode.

“Combined with our Twin Disc marine gear the electric/hybrid system will provide controlled propulsion power transfer, helping to ensure a smooth operation.

“This system will help reduce emissions, pollutants and noise whilst operating on the Thames, thereby delivering an environmental benefit for years to come.”

Robert Plant, General Manager, for the Marine Diesel Division of EP Barrus, suppliers of the engines, said the twin Yanmar 6LY400 engines form part of a new 6LY-CR family of six-cylinder inboard diesel engines, which are reliable and efficient.

“Having worked with the PLA and MIT on a number of applications in the past, we were pleased to have been approached by Goodchild Marine to supply the engines for the first hybrid pilot boat.

“Environmentally friendly with superior power-to-weight ratio, these engines deliver class leading performance and suit this application perfectly.

“We are excited to be part of this new wave of technology and look forward to seeing the final result out on the water.”

Other vessels which may benefit from a hybrid solution include survey vessels, harbour workboats, passenger vessels, and patrol boats.

Goodchild Marine Services Limited, which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary year, will be exhibiting the first 13m ORC to enter service in the UK at Seawork, in Southampton, from July 3 to 5.

Tony Birr, Business Development Manager, will also take a speaker slot during the exhibition and conference to discuss hybrid power options.

Also on the pontoon will be Commercial Rib Charter’s latest 14.5m aluminium Crew Transfer Vessel.

CRC have already taken delivery of a similar vessel in GRP ‘Galaxy’ which is proving very popular.

On stand PB38, there will be a working model of Goodchild Marine Services Limited’s Man Overboard Recovery Platform, which is available to supply for retro fit and new builds.

For those involved in dredging, the company is the UK agent for Italdraghe and will have a full size hydraulic dredging head on show for fitting to any hydraulic excavator, making it a mobile cutter suction dredger.

Damen, Ampelmann and VEEM join forces in providing a single marine access solution

At the end of June, Damen Shipyards Group along with Ampelmann and VEEM hosted a Marine Access Event. Over two days, delegates from both the offshore renewable and non-renewable industries had the opportunity to sail from IJmuiden in the Netherlands to experience the latest in marine access solutions. The demonstrations took place on board a Damen Fast Crew Supplier 5009 equipped with an Ampelmann L-type gangway and two VEEM VG 260SD gyro stabilisers. 

This combination of VEEM gyro stabilizers, the latest Ampelmann L-type gangway system and a Damen FCS 5009 marks a step change for marine access solutions. Embarking at IJmuiden, visitors from Europe, the Middle East, South America and Africa took to the waters of the North Sea and experienced the L-type gangway being connected to a wind turbine at Eneco’s Princess Amalia offshore wind farm. Following the demonstration, this Ampelmann L-type will be shipped directly to Nigeria where it will be installed on another FCS 5009, owned by L.A.T.C. Marine Limited and operating for ExxonMobil. 

Wiebe Jan Emsbroek, Crew Change Market Manager at Ampelmann, said: “To be able to demonstrate the capabilities of the Ampelmann L-type system in combination with the FCS 5009 and VEEM’s gyro stabilizers was extremely important. It clearly showed the need to have partners to deliver a single solution for safe and efficient personnel transfer.  It was great to see that industry peers travelled from near and far to join us for this event.” 

Testing of the VEEM stabilizers proved to be a complete success with a roll reduction of between 35-40%, combined with the faultless performance of the Ampelmann system. David Stibbe, Damen Business Development Manager, said: “One of the many interesting features of the event was demonstrating the gyro stabilizers being switched on and off at the push of a button. This enabled guests to appreciate the positive effect they have on the vessel’s roll motion. Looking to the anticipated combination on the next generation of Damen fast crew suppliers, our new FCS 7011 design will feature the larger VEEM VG 1000 SD stabilizer, which will achieve a roll reduction of up to 70% in 2.5m significant wave heights."

Guests also had the opportunity to attend a series of short presentations delivered by representatives of all three companies. Damen, Ampelmann and VEEM covered the latest developments in marine crew change solutions, fast crew supply vessels, motion compensated gangway designs and gyro stabilization technology. 

“This event follows the successful operation of a Damen FCS 5009 equipped with an Ampelmann L-type, that is now deployed off the coast of Nigeria,” continued David Stibbe, “and our development work on the FCS 7011, which is progressing well. These steps demonstrate that, by working together with our partners Ampelmann and VEEM and pooling our respective specialist knowledge, Damen can provide its clients with so much more than just a vessel. We are able to act as a marine access knowledge centre, capable of delivering completely integrated solutions using proven technology that is both safe and cost-efficient.” 

VEEM Chairman Brad Miocevich, who attended the trials, said: “The performance of the VG 260 SDs were absolutely as predicted and exceeded Damen’s expectations. It was impressive to see the new Damen, Ampelmann, VEEM combination working so seamlessly. I am very excited to be able to sign off on the performance of the VG 260 SDs on the Damen FCS 5009 vessel. It is even more encouraging to receive Damen’s confirmation that they would now like to proceed to the purchase phase & confirm the commercial requirements & delivery dates to supply the VG1000SD for the new Damen FCS 7011.”
