The vessel is scheduled to go into production within 2 months. Vessel completion will be finished within 10 months. This is one of many contracts being signed by SBA who are building for several fishing owners in the UK. Kort Propulsion are proud to announce a contract signing with 2 of the most important shipyards in Romania: ATG Shipyard, located in Giurgiu, in the southern part of the country and Navrom Shipyard, established in 1890 in Galati.

With direct access to the Danube river, ATG Shipyard has a steel manufacturing capacity of approximately 10,000 tons of steel per year. The new 32m “Semnal” multipurpose boat will be fitted with Doosan engines supplied by Watermota Romania and Kort Sterngear, Propellers and Nozzles. A KT200 Tunnel Thruster will also be supplied. Weka will supply Boxcoolers for the new vessel that will be finished in the first quarter of 2019.

Port of CNFR Navrom SA group, Navrom Shipyard have selected Kort Propulsion for a 500TDW Coastal Tanker project being built in Galati. Navrom SA is one of the most significant inland operators on the Danube, with over 10 million of the most diverse goods being transported: ore, charcoal, cement, limestone, grains, fertilizers, rolled steel, parts and equipment. The cargo shipping fleet of the Company includes covered and uncovered barges ranging between 1000-3000 tons capacity, 1000-1100 tons crewed barges and 1300 tons tank barges. For their propulsion and handling C.N.F.R. Navrom S.A. has got pushboats ranging between 800-3500 HP and 400-550 HP tugboats. Kort will supply the Sterngear, Propellers and Steering for this tanker project which is already in production.

Over the past 10 years Kort Propulsion has built up a good reputation with Romanian Shipyards and developed an exclusive partnership with Watermota Romania and Diesel House.”

MIT deliver Bespoke Exhaust Suspension System by Rubber Design for Sir David Attenborough Research Vessel

MIT has successfully delivered a bespoke exhaust suspension system to Cammell-Laird Shipbuilders in Liverpool who have the official contract to build the 128m, 5,000t Sir David Attenborough world-class polar research vessel.

Designed by Rolls-Royce, the vessel is set to be the first of its kind. With the ability to carry a scientific cargo of approximately 900 cu meters with an icebreaking capability of up to 1m thick at 3 knots, she will be able to withstand up to 60 days at sea within the Polar Regions. Travelling up to 19,000nm at 13 knots of transit the vessel will house up to 29 crew and officers and up to 60 scientific and support staff, along with boasting a heli-deck and hanger, a science hanger, a moon pool and on-board submersible which will be deployed for underwater research.

Due to the nature of her work in natural environments, the critical challenge to a diesel engine exhaust system is the ability to run at full power while emitting the least noise and vibration as possible, both within the vessel and into the marine environment. Limiting the levels of noise and vibration pollution provides minimal disruption to marine life and to the scientific measuring equipment on board, which is imperative to operations such as those that will be carried out on her deployment.

This challenge, accepted by Rubber Design, a leading international specialist in solutions for noise, vibration, and shock related problems. Experts at developing solutions that isolate the source of disturbance reducing marine noise and vibration pollution for an array of ocean-going projects.

Working from plans supplied by Rolls-Royce, the, and expertise of Rubber Design meant they were able to provide a bespoke system built precisely to design specifications. The suspension system will comprise of 148 fixed-point mounts, 142 stabilisers, and 30 stainless steel bellows, forming the complete section that will hold in place the chosen exhaust system. A typical array from Rubber Design would be equipped with double elastic mounting systems, with calculations and design provided for not only the intermediate frame but a variety of measurements to determine the optimum mounting types, rubber hardness and frequency calculations to aid in the reduction of noise and vibrations.

The relationship built between Rolls-Royce and Rubber Design on previous projects and the engineering excellence and product adaptability of Rubber Design products made them the clear supplier of choice when addressing such a significant portion of the specification and build. The vessel is fitted with 2 × Bergen B33:45L6A (2 × 3,600 kW) and 2 × Bergen B33:45L9A (2 × 5,400 kW) diesel/electric engines to improve fuel consumption and reduce environmental impact.

MIT provided local technical and logistics support while also ensuring that each of the 320 individual components was delivered on time to each exact job location, ensuring that the build plans were on schedule.

Both MIT and Rubber Design are proud to have been involved with the delivery of this project and to play a part in the increased UK scientific presence within the Polar Region.

The Sir David Attenborough research vessel will be operated by the British Antarctic Survey and is due to enter service in 2019; we eagerly await her first expedition.

Damen ASD Tug 3212 Svitzer Glenrock delivered to Svitzer Australia

Damen Shipyards Group has delivered an ASD Tug 3212 as the second part of a two-vessel order placed by Svitzer Australia. Named the Svitzer Glenrock, the tug arrived at Newcastle, NSW, on its own keel from Damen Song Cam Shipyard, Vietnam. There it will work in the world’s busiest coal port, handling Cape-class bulk carriers and petroleum tankers as they enter and leave the confines of the harbour.

Svitzer operates one of Australia’s largest fleets of tugs, comprised of over 85 vessels. Twenty of these are built by Damen, including two Damen ATD Tugs 2412, the Svitzer Eurekaand Svitzer Otwayin the Port of Melbourne, ASD Tugs 2411 in Brisbane, Port Kembla, Newcastle, Melbourne and Sydney, an ASD Tug 2810 in Sydney and an ASD Tug 2310 in Sydney.

In addition to the power and manoeuvrability provided by the ASD Tug 3212, Damen was also able to deliver the vessel within four months of the contract being signed. This was the possible due to Damen’s policy of building its most popular vessels for stock, with clients then able to specify any modifications prior to finishing and delivery. The Svitzer Glenrockis fitted with a render recovery forward winch, which ensures the line always remains under a safe tension, even when sailing in large waves. This enhances her capability to undertake active-escort duties for the large carriers and petroleum tankers, safely under all circumstances.

Given this superior capability with attaching lines to ships, the tug has been committed to Svitzer’s AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) obligation and will be available for emergency assists for any vessel with propulsion or steerage problems outside the harbour.

“Svitzer Glenrockwill work in the world’s busiest coal port, moving bulk carriers and petroleum tankers around the harbour,” says Svitzer’s Newcastle Port Manager, Ben Hart. “The power and manoeuvrability of the tug will allow the port to accommodate the future demand for larger ships to call at Newcastle.”

Following crew familiarisation with the Svitzer Glenrockwill start work in August.

The delivery is the last to be made under the oversight of Damen’s Chiel de Leeuw, who has moved to a new role in the groupas Sales Director RoPax Newbuild.

His role as Svitzer account manager has been taken up by Erik van Hattem. “I am very much looking forward to working with Svitzer and to further strengthening the already good relationship between our two organisations,” says Erik. “I am confident that we can continue to develop and deliver the solutions that they require to optimise their operations in a highly competitive market.”

Damen embarks on Danish full electric public transport project for Arriva

Damen Shipyards Group recently signed a contract with leading multinational public transport company Arriva Danmark for five fully-electric ferries, known as the Damen Ferry 2306 E3. Damen E3 vessels are designed with the philosophy of being environmentally friendly, efficient in operation and economically viable. Arriva will operate the ferries for its client, Danish public transport agency MOVIA, in the country’s capital city Copenhagen.

Damen are long-standing ship builders and along with Arriva share a common vision of reducing the environmental footprint of public transportation via utilisation of innovative technology. Equally, both parties place great importance on the customer experience in terms of safety, reliability and comfort.

For the tender process of this contract, Damen’s in-house engineering team conducted extensive studies into the best possible solution for the operation in question. A key feature was environmental performance. To this end, Damen considered biodiesel, hybrid and full electric solutions. Unsurprisingly, a zero emissions, fully electric solution offered the best results in terms of sustainability. It also transpired that, over the twelve year period of the contract, this was the most cost-efficient solution.

Another crucial requirement was that the new vessels be able to fit into the existing framework – including use of current timetables and infrastructure, as well as capacity to carry at least 60 passengers. To fulfil this, Damen has developed a design with a capacity for 80 passengers, tailored so that the vessels can dock – bow first – at the existing jetties.

At the jetties at each end of the route, Damen will install fast charging points. These will apply solutions already proven in land public transport solutions. Charging, which will take place with each voyage, will take just seven minutes.

On board comfort was also an important factor. The ferries, without diesel engines, offer very low noise and vibrations. The passenger area – low in the water for wind protection – features very large windows, while the roof is also glazed. The wheelhouse has been raised to the highest possible position so as to provide operators with the optimal viewpoint.

Naturally, for vessels that are required to carry up to 80 passengers – both commuters and tourists – sixteen hours a day, reliability was of the utmost importance. Fortunately, Damen has a proven track record in fully electric solutions. To further ensure reliability, Damen has developed a robust, steel-hulled ferry with strong fenders. These features, combined with the electric propulsion, guarantee lowest possible maintenance requirements.

The design benefits from Damen’s in-house R&D and Innovation programme, which has delivered numerous maritime innovations over the years. Recent examples include hybrid and electric road ferries and participation in the production of the world’s first Class approved 3D-printed propeller. Another example is Remote Monitoring – a useful tool on sustainable, efficient operations such as this, to monitor use of fuel and upcoming maintenance requirements amongst other things.

HST’s naming ceremony for FCS 2710 held on opening day

Damen showed two new Fast Crew Supply vessels to the world for the first time on the 3dof July at the 2018 Seawork International Exhibition and Conference, currently underway in Southampton, UK. The FCS 2710 and FCS 1204 received their first public viewings and the naming ceremony for the FCS 2710 was also held on the opening day of the show.

The FCS 2710 is the successor vessel to the highly popular FCS 2610, which has sold over 40 vessels worldwide over the past seven years. The FCS 2710 retains the successful twin hull, axe bow design but is one metre longer and higher than its predecessor. That, plus a complete redesign of the interior, allows it to carry twice the number of passengers as the FCS 2610 and enables it to deliver more flexibility, more tank capacity, greater deck space, increased comfort and more accommodation. The extra metre above the water also allows the vessel to operate in wave heights of above two metres. This substantially increases the range of weather conditions in which it can be at sea.

On the opening day of the show the first vessel of the new class, owned by High Speed Transfers Ltd, was officially named HST Hudson by managing director Tom Nevin’s young son of the same name. Anew entry into the offshore transfers sector based in Swansea, Wales, HST has been set up by three experienced operatives from the offshore industry. They see the FCS 2710 as an effective way to make an immediate impact by using a completely redesigned version of a vessel-type that is already well known in the market.

After the naming ceremony, Tom Nevin commented: “We’re so excited to launch this 2710. We think it’s going to be a game-changer in the industry, and we’re very proud to be operating the first one! Also I’d like to thank everyone who visited our vessel today and for all the kind words. My son Hudson who the vessel is named after will definitely remember this day for a long time. A huge thanks to my partners Christopher Monan and Ian Oxford, all the crew, and to Damen Sales Manager Arjen van Elk and the Damen team.”

Fast Crew Supplier 1204 FRP
Seawork 2018 also saw the first showing of the new Fast Crew Supplier 1204 FRP (fibre reinforced plastic). The 12-metre boat replaces a previous version of the same name to become the smallest model in the Damen FCS range. As well as substituting the aluminium hull with a tough, lightweight FRP design, the new FCS 1204 is designed to be built using modular techniques. With hulls plus a full range of wheelhouse and accommodation options held permanently in stock, buyers can select the interior / exterior configuration they want, choose between shaft, waterjet and Z-drive propulsion options, and receive their vessel just 10 weeks later. Capable of carrying up to 28 personnel at up to 30 knots, it has a range of 200 nm at top speed. This represents a substantial uplift in performance and capacity over its predecessor.

Valeport releases new portable tidal observation hub

A new portable survey solutionfor monitoring tide, met and other sensors has been launched by leading British oceanographic and hydrographic instrument specialist, Valeport. The new TideStation (Portable)is a self-contained tidal observation hub which optimises performance of instrumentation.

TideStation (Portable) has Valeport’s industry leading tide gauge system, TideMaster, at its core. Housed in a large rugged ABS case, the compact and robust TideStation (Portable) offers a choice of either UHF or GPRS telemetry with connection to pressure or radar sensors along with interface to other meteorological systems.

The single unit includes all infrastructure required to maintain power to the tide and meteorological equipment and communications system contained within. Accessing data from the water level monitoring equipment within the TideStation (Portable) is easy, all data can be recorded locally and broadcast to a central command and control point as required. If using GPRS telemetry, data can be viewed and managed on a Valeport headed webpage using the Port-Log from Oceanwise software supplied, which is subscription free for 12 months, with the option to subscribe further directly with Oceanwise thereafter.
