Top choice wipers for the fishing market

Monday, 13th May 2019

DuroWipers is once again demonstrating its ability to cater for all sectors of the commercial marine market securing new contracts to supply window wiper systems to two fishing vessels courtesy of its long-standing customer, Macduff Shipyards.

The yard has ordered a single Class 90 twin drive pantograph wiper system which will retrofit an existing 15m crabber belonging to Scrabster Seafoods.

DuroWipers will also supply 3 x Class 50 twin drive pantograph wipers for a newbuild 14m twin-screw catamaran workboat for a salmon farm being built for Scottish Sea Farms.

“We chose DuroWipers for these two projects because down to previous experience, we know that their wipers are durable, trouble-free and very reasonably priced,” said Roy Morrison of Macduff Shipyards.

“DuroWipers were ideally suited to these two projects as the units are reasonably compact which is perfect for smaller vessels and we know that they’re long-lasting and will give a trouble-free service in the harsh environment that they’re exposed too.”

Green choice

Mr Morrison said that they’re a sustainable choice too for the vessels.

“Although the wipers come with a three-year warranty as standard, having fitted DuroWipers to workboats, small fishing boats, pilot boats and harbour tugs over the years we’ve never had an occasion to use the warranty,” he said.

Noel Gould, MD at DuroWipers, added: “Our customers are buying into the concept that buying our wipers is also making the right choice for the environment.”

“The fact that DuroWipers pantographs are so long-lasting means there is no need for any spares or maintenance costs, a greener choice in terms of the lifetime of the vessel.”

Robust

DuroWipers prides itself on manufacturing top-quality products that are not only sustainable but also the most robust on the market.

Its pantographs are specified on the UK Shannon Class Lifeboat where the conditions they encounter are extremely treacherous and the vessel operator needs clear vision at all times.

DuroWipers patented design transfers the power from the motor to the two spindles equally meaning both spindles drive unlike any other marine wiper on the market.

This action creates a smooth, quiet and powerful maintenance free performance lasting the lifetime of the vessel.

The Class 90 pantograph utilises the 80Nm Bosch motor with a considerably smaller transfer box than the Class 80, for applications where space is limited.

While the Class 50 pantograph is the smallest in DuroWipers range and is also ideal for applications where space is at a premium.

DuroWipers offers a ten-year guarantee on its wipers for the RNLI and a lifetime guarantee on its products to the Royal Navy. For commercial operators it offers a free warranty for three years, above and beyond the usual 12-month standard.

Live demo – Marine Wipers For the Fishing Market

DuroWipers will be at the European commercial marine exhibition again this year showcasing a live demo of its wide range of pantograph systems on stand PY1115.

Shakespeare Marine’s innovative inflatable emergency VHF antenna wins Product of the Year 2019

Tuesday, 7th May 2019

World leader in marine antenna design, Shakespeare® Marine, has been announced as winner of Product of the Year at the HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show 2019 for its GALAXY-INFL8, the world’s first inflatable emergency VHF antenna.

The GALAXY-INFL8 has taken the industry by storm since its launch at METSTRADE 2018, with this award adding to previous recognition from the highly prestigious DAME Design Awards and the Miami International Boat Show Innovation Awards.  It can be rapidly deployed via an embedded canister or manual tube and inflates to 1.6 meters (5 feet) to offer a full 3dB functioning unit and a range of up to three times greater than any existing helical emergency antenna. The GALAXY-INFL8 is also supplied with a unique splice connector, enabling fast and efficient connection to existing radio cables, which further improves the radio transmission range – another industry first.

The independent jury, chaired by Guido Beekmann, was full of praise, explaining, "With the GALAXY-INFL8 we see many applications of this inflatable antenna for a broad target group: from canoeist to applicability in liferafts. It is a safety device which is multi-applicable and can also be applied to handheld equipment by the supplied connectors."

European Sales Manager at Shakespeare® Marine, Dave Manasseh, comments, “It is an honor to have received the award for Product of the Year at the HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show this year. The GALAXY-INFL8 is the culmination of years of hard work from our engineering and design specialists, and the reception it has had has been overwhelming. We’d like to thank the jury for their recognition and our distributors for their support.”

Fifteen distributors across fourteen countries worldwide are now stocking the multiple award winningGALAXY-INFL8. A game-changer for emergency communications, it has been designed with multiple features to enhance users’ safety at sea, including contrasting colors to allow it to be seen mounted on the vessel day and night and built-in reflective strips for extra visibility. The antenna is mounted with included hook and loop straps allowing for quick and easy installation in any weather, as well as grommets top and bottom to facilitate securing to masts, stanchions, outriggers or other vertical structures on board. Thanks to its inflatable design and manual valve it is reusable, so it can be deflated and stowed away safely until it is needed.

In addition to being an emergency replacement for the primary vessel antenna, the packable and storable GALAXY-INFL8 can also be adapted to improve the range of handheld VHFs, making it an ideal addition to ditch bag and even non-emergency applications where extending the range of portable VHFs is desirable.

Established in 1897, Shakespeare® Marine is a global antenna brand with a reputation for superior quality. Find out more on the website, www.shakespeare-marine.com or contact the Europen offices on 00 44(0) 1253 858 787.

Damen cuts steel for new Day Cruise Vessel

Tuesday, 7th May 2019

Building for an inland location with Damen Technical Cooperation

Damen Shipyards Group has cut the first steel for a 34-metre long Day Cruise Vessel for Windermere Lake Cruises, located in England’s Lake District National Park. Damen and Windermere Lake Cruises have planned the vessel construction process in close consultation with local authorities and residents to minimise the impact on this protected and environmentally sensitive area, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Windermere Lake Cruises currently runs a fleet of sixteen lake cruising vessels: three traditional ‘steamers’ – each with a capacity of more than 350 passengers – as well as other traditional and modern launches. The fleet operates all year round, taking passengers on tours, day trips and evening functions on the Lake District’s largest lake, Lake Windermere. The role of the company in the local economy cannot be overstated: more than 1.6 million passenger journeys are taken every year, making Windermere Lake Cruises one the most popular attractions in the UK.

A one-off vessel
To accommodate this consistent and extensive growth in visitor numbers, and enhance the sustainable transport offering on Windermere, Bill Bewley, Chairman Windermere Lake Cruises explains that the company felt that it was time to increase the size of the fleet. Assisted by James Fisher PLC, Windermere Lake Cruises first approached UK-based shipyards. “However, it soon became clear in the procurement process that the shipyard with the depth of experience to undertake this project, within the cost and timescale requirements, was Damen,” he adds.

The resulting design and construction contract with Damen detailed numerous specifications relating to the rather extraordinary inland location of Lake Windermere.

Looking the part
In terms of design, says Damen Jan van Ooijen, Design & Proposal Engineer Ferries, it was important that this new ‘one-of-a-kind’ vessel not only matches the looks of the existing fleet and heritage of this area, but also stands out as being a technologically modern lake cruising vessel. “This diesel-electric vessel – to be named Swift– will have four-star comfort seating capacity for 300 passengers,” he says. “It will be fully accessible by wheelchair and the top deck can be opened or closed, depending on what the weather decides.”

Building for a (protected) inland location
The fact that the Swiftwill operate in an inaccessible inland location and that the Lake District is a UK National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site means that Damen will combine two of its shipbuilding methods to ensure maximum possible care and respect for the local environment.

“Building a ship is typically a very noisy process, so it is obviously not possible to build this vessel from scratch on location,” comments Damen Design & Proposal Engineer Maarten Lamboo. “Therefore, to optimise the production process and limit local disturbance, we are prefabricating the hull and superstructure in sections at Damen Shipyards Kozle in Poland. And then, under the scope of Damen Technical Cooperation [DTC] – which can be briefly described as building any Damen vessel at any facility in the world – we will assemble these sections at a lakeside location next to the Lakes Aquarium and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway.” Once completed, Damen will transport the newly built vessel to the water by multi-wheeled vehicle, and lift it into the water for its final outfitting and trials.

“The Lake District is such a special and beautiful location – and we are so proud to be building a vessel that will sail here for generations to come,” adds Damen UK Sales Manager Arjen van Elk. “This is made possible by implementing our DTC construction methods. Building a vessel for an inland location in this way is actually unique in Europe.”

More information on this will be posted in our online marine directory and commercial offshore marine magazine.

Upgrade to Popular Bronze Pump Range

Tuesday, 7th May 2019

Designed and manufactured exclusively for the commercial sea fishing industry, the products of IFP in Italy have been promoted throughout the UK & Ireland, initially by Cleghorn Waring, now part of the Xylem Group, since 1986.

The widely used “Cleghorn” bronze centrifugal pumps have had an internal re-design that will interest visitors to Skipper Expo Int. Aberdeen 2019, where Charles Cleghorn Limited will be exhibiting on stand number 81b.

The target feature was to radically reduce self-priming time.  This has been achieved and first became available when incorporated into the 2” AM50 3-phase motor pumps, in mid 2018.

With a remarkable reduction in priming time of (approx) 50%, the benefit will be particularly effective in larger vessels where significant pipe runs occur and where there are isolating valves & manifolds.

The new feature is also appearing in the pedestal versions of the AM50, for main engine driven applications. Design is now completed and testing in progress for the smaller (1 ½” AM40D) models which will be following the improved AM50D series into production.

The new models have identical external dimensions and are therefore fully interchangeable with all AM40/50 series which have been sold into the UK and Irish fishing industry since 1986.

Complementing the new units will be the well established “PC” models, mostly applied to gearbox and hydraulic system cooling duties, plus “TS” models designed for engine cooling on propulsion motors of up to 850hp.

Charles Cleghorn says that the company looks forward to meeting with long-standing customers from the marine engineering trade and is also keen to meet with skippers, owners and marine engineers from all of mainland Scotland and the offshore islands.

Skipper Expo Int. 2019 runs 17-18 May at the AECC in Aberdeen.

This month sees Direct Gaskets reach another milestone – 30 years in business.

Tuesday, 7th May 2019

Since establishing as a business in 1989, Direct Gaskets have been a constant supplier of gaskets, sheeting, ‘O’ Rings and Gland Packing to industries in all sectors.

They have had to evolve over time to keep up with the needs of industries and invest in new materials as the times have changed. One example of this is the ban of Asbestos in 1999 – all new ranges of materials which are Asbestos free had to be manufactured to cover the wide application Asbestos had previously been applied in.

In the span of Direct Gaskets’ 30 year success, they have relocated twice to expand and house their huge range of items they keep on stock, seen staff changes and suppliers and customers come and go – but one thing stands true – Direct Gaskets have been at the forefront of Gasket manufacturing and supply. This has been recognised in awards they have achieved, the most recent being Yorkshire & the Humber Enterprise Awards 2018 in the category of Best Gasket Manufacturer & Suppliers 2018.

Being at the cutting edge of their industry is something Direct Gaskets always aim to achieve as well as maintaining a high level of quality and control. They are assessed by QMS and have recently been awarded their ISO 9001 : 2015 accreditation. They also regularly conduct customer satisfaction surveys to check their levels of professionalism with the most recent survey earning them a platinum 96% customer satisfaction rating.

Currently at the helm is Lyn Weichardt who is the acting Managing Director. Lyn began her career at Direct Gaskets being their resident book keeper. When Lyn became pregnant with her first child she decided to thin out her work load and leave some businesses she was accounting for. In doing this she decided to keep working with Direct Gaskets as she was truly interested in the business and what they were achieving. She soon stopped working for all other businesses and became a full time employee of Direct Gaskets – working her way to the top of the chain and taking over as the acting Managing Director.

Direct Gaskets wouldn’t have had a successful 30 years if it wasn’t for loyal customers – large and small, personal sales or industry sales keeping them in business; coupled with this Direct Gaskets offer an unbeatable turnaround time on all products at a competitive price.

So, 30 years in Direct Gaskets would like to say thank you – here’s to 30 more.
