Durham Lifting, one of the founding manufacturers of modular spreader beams in the UK, is proud to announce a new strategic global partnership with Mercia Lifting Gear LTD.

The partnership will see Mercia Lifting Gear become a distributor of Multisec Spreader Beam products, making them immediately available for purchase to their current client base.

Southbay Civil Engineering have refurbished short sea outfall structures off the North East Coast

Southbay Civil Engineering have successfully delivered a contract to refurbish two short sea outfall structures located off the North East Coast of England at County Durham.

The outfall structures are used to safely discharge treated mine water into the North Sea from the Dawdon Mine Water Treatment Scheme. Due to the tidal location of the outfall structures, construction progressed from a 250 tonne Jack Up Barge.

Using a team of specialist divers, the project involved replacing sections of damaged outfall, placement of scour protection, and the installation of marker buoys.

The specialist marine experience of Southbay was instrumental in delivering this challenging contract, which will ultimately help to protect a vital source of drinking water used to supply over 30,000 people in the region.

His Majesty The King Visits Global Underwater Hub in Aberdeen

In a historic occasion, Global Underwater Hub (GUH) – the leading trade and industry development body for the UK’s underwater sectors – received a visit from HM The King on Friday 25th September.

GUH, which represents the diverse range of businesses operating in the UK’s £8 billion underwater industry, provided The King with a tour of its premises in Westhill on the outskirts of Aberdeen, and showcased the vital work being undertaken across the sectors including offshore energy, aquaculture, defence and telecoms.

Upon his arrival, The King was welcomed by Neil Gordon, chief executive of Global Underwater Hub followed by introductions to key industry stakeholders, GUH board members, staff and representatives from member companies, and local school pupils.

During the visit, His Majesty took the opportunity to inspect the latest technology “all-electric” work-class submersible Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), built and developed in Newcastle by GUH member company Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD). His Majesty then viewed a live offshore operation in The Netherlands on a control station being carried out by one of Fugro’s Autonomous Surface Vessels which launched an underwater robot used for the inspection of subsea cables and pipelines.

His Majesty then toured exhibits from a range of companies working in the blue economy, including JFD who specialise in underwater diving technology, underwater 3D image capturing company Viewport3, and ARC Marine who make eco-friendly artificial reefs which provide subsea protection as well as enhancing biodiversity.

A team of senior pupils from Aberdeenshire’s Mintlaw Academy then showed His Majesty their fully operational ROV which they designed and built themselves. The Mintlaw ROV team is an example of how initiatives such as the GUH STEM Challenge educational outreach programmes can inspire young people about technology in the underwater industries.

Neil Gordon expressed his gratitude to His Majesty for the visit, and said, “We were honoured to welcome His Majesty to the Global Underwater Hub in Westhill. It was a unique opportunity to showcase the UK’s underwater sectors, the technology and expertise of our member companies, and our commitment to developing skills and capabilities to drive competitive advantage as the global leader.”

Before leaving, The King was invited to unveil a plaque to commemorate the visit.

Innovative Precast Retaining Walls Built Underwater for Estuary Waterfront Development

Believed to be the first of its type, Tierra Armada (Reinforced Earth) in Spain recently designed and supplied 1.5km of precast counterfort retaining panels in the Bilbao estuary.

The contractor Acciona Construcción and Altuna y Uría JV worked for the client Bilbao Port Authority to gain 50,000 m2 of land for future development for residential and mixed uses for around €20M.

A tidal estuary location, there were substantial challenges that were overcome through using such as system, but was successfully executed in under 22 months, finishing in early 2022.

Precast Retaining Wall – Key challenges

Working in a tidal zone always presents issues. The fundamental one is often the programme constraints when work can be conducted on either side of high tides. Instead of considering a standard dewatering method such as a cofferdam using steel sheet piles for support, which has a limited lifespan in water. By providing an off-site precast retaining wall the client immediately had a durable fully finished structure with an aesthetic surface to match existing estuary walls and an installation that offered extended whole life cycle costs.

The scheme therefore designed an approach using selective areas of stone column foundations, which were installed below the area to be built upon. In total around 60km of columns were installed. Granular fills were then deposited onto these and an area of levelled fills was later deposited where the thin-walled precast counterfort panels would be placed. The cranage of the precast units had to also ensure lifts of these panels could be made up to 115m from the side in some instances.

Innovation

Called TechWall, the low carbon precast panels are capable of being cast in factory conditions to heights of over 16m, widths of up to 2.5m and have only very thin sections of 140mm. The panel is reinforced and in hydraulic situations, GRP or Basalt can replace standard steel reinforcement bars. The panel is further strengthened by a counterfort system on the back face of the panel, allowing a variety of selective backfills to be utilised. TechWall has significant benefits not only for use in hydraulic situations but also where a cut situation is small, where the base can be suited accordingly to accommodate the situation.

Benefits

The significant speed of build even underwater. In Bilbao up to 10 units a day 160m2 were installed.

Cost benefits over conventional coffer dam solutions and whole life cycle costs were significant.

Surface aesthetics on the front face of the panels were possible and indeed could easily support biomimicry for coastal habitats in the intertidal zones.

Utilising GRP or basalt reinforcement further enhances the design life of the units and ensures no corrosion.

Offshore Europe 2023, the foremost industry event for the offshore sector, has been a resounding success for Barlow Technology.

A first for us in terms of exhibiting, following several years of walking the Aberdeen show, our expectations were optimistic, especially in light of the show’s previous postponement due to Covid.

Our Teesside based business has over 40 years’ experience working with companies at the heart of heavy industry, in the supply of a range of engineered products to suit a wide gamut of applications. So, with products uniquely designed for the harsh environments experienced by the offshore sector, we were perfectly placed to establish new connections and build on existing partnerships at OE23.

Exhibiting with our European partners, Johannes Hubner GmbH and VEM Group, we were able to introduce clients to the scope of our product and service within the UK, offering case studies and testimonials from established clients and accepting referrals to new contacts.

Incentivised further with two stand-based whisky-tasting sessions, the booth was a networking success and a hive of activity for the duration of the 4-day event.

We look forward now to re-establishing contact with those we met and working together in the coming months.

PDL Marine start build of 6.75m Survey Vessel

PDL Marine are pleased to announce the signing and start of a new custom-built 6.75m Survey vessel for CainTech in Inverness.

The vessel is designed to MCA cat 3 standards with certification and is road transportable, along with the shallow draft, it is perfect for working in hard-to-reach areas.

Fitted with twin 80hp Yamaha outboards gives a cruising speed of 20 knots. The moonpool also allows It to be equipped with a Norbit Multibeam Sonar system, amongst a plethora of other electronic equipment. The vessel is designed to operate with up to 4 crew onboard with sufficient weather protection including heating in the cabin.
