Castoldi launches US division

Castoldi is creating a permanent presence in the United States with an American office in Seattle called Castoldi USA Inc.

The US division, being headed up by James Langner, US sales representative, will take care about new sales in the territory and handle after sales service for the company’s American customers.

“The US office gives us a firm presence in America and will reassure our customers that we have a truly global presence. It will give them the confidence to invest in our proven waterjet technology knowing that they will also receive the top quality after-sales service our customers have come to expect,” said Mr Langner.

Competitive edge
The US office will handle all American sales across all markets, including fishing, workboats, fast ferries, high speed craft, military and shallow draft applications.

Castoldi’s competitive edge is centred around its integrated gearbox offering one of the most efficient, light weight and compact propulsion systems available on the market today.

Much more than a simple pump, it is a complete, integrated marine propulsion system. The Castoldi waterjet drive is very light due to the aluminium alloy construction of its principal parts. The gearbox with hydraulic clutch is integrated in the unit therefore the engine need not be provided with a marine transmission.

Castoldi provides full support to its customers supplying the waterjet (with integrated gearbox), the control system for waterjet and engine and designing the suitable transmission set.

The Castoldi waterjet can easily operate in shallow waters and critical conditions due to its unique design including all oil lubricated bearings and the impeller shaft rotating into a housing, not in contact with water. The waterjet intake is protected by a movable grid and optionally the waterjet can be equipped with the ultimate cleaning system by Castoldi (called Clear-Duct) that performs the impeller reversing (back-flush) in combination with the opening of the intake grid.

The waterjet is made from high quality material with AISI 316 or Duplex micro-cast stainless steel impellers and stainless steel or titanium liners. It has been toughened using an anti-corrosion hard anodising treatment protecting all the aluminium alloy components with 60 microns thickness of aluminium oxide (ceramic), three layers of special paint and cathodic protection by sacrificial anodes. This makes the waterjet unique in its construction quality.
The Castoldi Waterjet is installed worldwide on various types of fishing, commercial, military and pleasure vessels.

Not even dark clouds could stop Team Hydroscand from skydiving for Samaritans!

In January this year, Hydroscand UK made the decision to support Samaritans as our chosen charity for 2022.

In order to raise money, Branch Manager Nick Thomas suggested doing a Skydive!

We asked all team members whether they would like to take part. Initially there were eleven people interested. Slowly but surely, the team was confirmed as Rebecca Galley, Managing Director; Deb Wardle, Assistant Branch Manager; Claire English, Administrator and Corey Lewis, Branch Technician.

In June the skydive was booked at Langar Airfield, Nottingham for 18th September and there was no going back!

Fundraising began! Deb Wardle said: “I agreed to join in our charity skydive challenge, and having done so, I set about thinking of ways to generate the greatest amount of funds and donations.

“Time was fast approaching, and we only had a month to complete our fundraising before jump day. A Hydroscand JustGiving page was set up: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/hydroscand-uk, and I set about sharing the details with close family and friends and posting the link to my social media pages.

“I received a few donations but by the time two weeks had past, leaving just two weeks to jump day, I felt a different tack was required.

“I purchased some blackout cards from Amazon and once received, I created a message which I shared individually to all my family, friends and work colleagues, social media friends and acquaintances, stating that I intended to sell each of the 40 squares on the sheet, at £5 per square, generating £200 income.

“I planned to split the funds 50/50 with the charity, and a cash prize to the person with the winning square. This raised a lot of interest and over the course of the weekend, I received 36-40 pledges.

“By Sunday evening I delved a little deeper into my contact lists and pushed to fill the card. As a result, I had an influx of pledges and ended up completing 2 full cards!
“I went into work on Monday morning, took photos of the completed cards and arranged for our Product Manager to reveal the winners, by removing the foil tabs in the presence of Rebecca Galley and myself.

“I took photos of the cards and then set about notifying the donors with a message of thanks. I sent off the 2 x £100 donations to our charity page and sent the 2 x £100 payments to winner’s accounts.

“One of my works colleagues, Claire was also doing the jump. I gave her one of the cards and explained the format. Claire managed to fill the card and generated another £100 charity donation.

“Our target figure was reached, and we increased it twice more, following both Claire now sharing the donation page details daily on our social media pages.

“During the week before the jump, I also printed off the picture of the Hydroscand Team and text which I laminated and put on our branch doors saying that all donations would be gratefully received.

“I placed a collection tin in our canteen and one on our trade counter asking for donations.

“On the evening before and the morning of our jump, I decided to send a message out to some of our customers and supplier contacts and managed to get another £300 of donations.

The day finally arrived. Everyone arrived at the allotted time of 11am and registered. Then the wait began! It became cloudy and at one point we were not sure if the skydive was going to go ahead.

After being delayed due to bad weather, they took to the sky around 2pm before completing freefall from 10,000ft followed by a slower descent via parachute a few minutes later.

The atmosphere was amazing, and everyone was buzzing. We asked for some reactions after the skydive and here is what they said:

Corey said: “Oh, that was brilliant, I loved it.”
Deb said: “I did it.”

Claire said: “I’m glad I am on the floor.”

Rebecca said: “Absolutely terrifying. I’m glad we did it because we did it for a great cause.”

We want to give our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has sponsored the team. We have raised in excess of £1,500 for Samaritans. The funds will help keep their helpline available for people who need it.

Diverse Marine is pleased to announce that it has completed the purchase of the freehold of Medina Yard and Medina Village from the Peter Harrison Trust. This site represents 12 acres of waterfront at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, part of which is the current base of the UK’s leading workboat builder.
Diverse Marine specialises in the construction of a varied fleet of workboats, primarily offshore wind crew transfer vessels, but in recent months also amphibious watercraft, search and rescue craft, crew boats for the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier and a number of small workboats and RIBs. A recent notable delivery was ’Seacat Columbia’, the first of class BARTech30 for Seacat Services.

MJR Power and Automation Secures Additional Grant Funding as Part Of Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition

A leading UK marine electrical engineering specialist – MJR Power and Automation – has successfully been awarded a second round of UK government funding for development of its offshore charging system technology, to connect and charge Service Operation Vessels (SOVs) working in the field.

The “Service Operational Vessel Offshore Charging System” project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 2 (CMDC2) which was launched in May 2022, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. As part of the CMDC2, the Department allocated over £14m to 31 projects supported by 121 organisations from across the UK to deliver feasibility studies and collaborative R&D projects in clean maritime solutions.

The funding will enable the Teesside based business, to fast track the next development and prototyping  of its already proven offshore charging technology system which will now allow Service Operation Vessels (SOVs) and Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs), as well as other vessel types, to connect in the field to a 100% green energy source generated directly by the offshore wind turbines for the efficient, safe and reliable transfer of power.

And the project comes on the back of MJR Power and Automation already successfully securing the first round of funding as part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition.

This has seen the company fast track the development and factory testing of an electrical offshore charging vessel system suitable for Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs) which was showcased earlier this year at the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Final Showcase held at Portsmouth International Port, and is now in its final stages of testing with deployment expected imminently.

As part of the next phase of development – enabled by the second phase of funding – the business will lead a consortium of partners, all pioneers in maritime decarbonisation, to deliver the project over the next eight months.

At present, the shift to fully electric and meaningful hybrid electric power – for many vessels – is hampered by a lack of available infrastructure for recharging offshore, with shore power and shoreside charging facilities being very limited or non-existent. As such, MJR Power and Automation’s innovation is already set to break down existing range barriers for CTVs – and now additional vessels with the next round of grant funding – to increase the uptake of fully electric and green propulsion systems, for retrofit and new build vessels by vessel owners and operators.

It is estimated in the UK alone, the range of vessels working in offshore operations – powered by Marine Gasoil (MGO) – is responsible for producing an estimated total of 285,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum. As such, the ability to charge when in the field, with the company’s offshore charging system, will significantly accelerate adoption of current emission-free propulsion systems which will be a major asset for the decarbonisation of the UK and global maritime sector.

Speaking about securing the grant, Paul Cairns, Managing Director at MJR Power and Automation said: “We are delighted to have secured this second round of funding from the Department of Transport that will be absolutely pivotal in supporting the decarbonisation of marine operations. Working with our key partners, who are all experts in their fields, we will take the lessons learned from the first project and apply extensive knowledge to develop this solution and bring it to market, where there is already a huge demand for it.”

The CMDC2 is part of the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emission’s (UK SHORE) flagship multi-year CMDC programme. In March 2022, the Department announced the biggest government investment ever in our UK commercial maritime sector, allocating £206m to UK SHORE, a new division within the Department for Transport focused on decarbonising the maritime sector. UK SHORE is delivering a suite of interventions throughout 2022-2025 aimed at accelerating the design, manufacture and operation of UK-made clean maritime technologies and unlocking an industry-led transition to Net Zero.

Ben Buchele Launches Water-Cooled Motors

Nürnberg, Germany-based Ben Buchele Elektromotorenwerke GmbH has unveiled a new range of stainless steel, water-cooled, induction motors for use in confined spaces and cleanrooms. They are available globally in 0.75 to 300 kW capacity.

The three-phase (or asynchronous) motors are suited to applications where high performance is a requirement, but noise and heat must be kept to a minimum, such as in small spaces that are common in many sectors.

The company, which manufactures standard and custom-built motors for heavy-duty applications globally, is offering the range as an alternative to air-cooled motors. The electric current in the rotor is supplied by three separate phases, producing torque by electromagnetic induction. The range meets international standard class IE3 (S1), which covers both efficiency and duty cycle.

The new range starts with the WD71 model and goes up to the WD315; WD is a reference to ‘water-cooled’ in German, while the numbers represent the motors’ frame size. The dimensions of the products vary as the motors increase in frame size in 13 total increments, also including 80, 90, 100, 112, 132, 160, 180, 200, 225, 250, and 280.

Detlef Koslowsky, head of sales at Ben Buchele, said: “With our WD model, you can achieve significant reduction of the footprint on people and the environment through noise emissions and heat dissipation. As opposed to air-cooled motors, water-cooled motors do not cause swirling of dust or dirt, making them the ideal solution for hygienically critical areas. The S1 duty cycle means that the motor runs continuously, which is important for these types of application.”

Koslowsky explained that the range will be sold to both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end users, with test facilities, printing devices, textile machines, injection machines, maritime hybrid engines, and anchor / mooring winches, among target applications. Depending on the end use—and customer preference—they can be supplied coated, or painted in white, which will likely be the chosen option for those utilising them in food production environments.

The new water-cooled (or WD) range can be used in the most challenging conditions, such as those where seawater, salty air, and ambient temperatures of up to +60°C are present. Manufactured with high-quality, application-sensitive seals and sealants, Ben Buchele can achieve protection levels according to IP56, 66, or 67, depending on the motor, without compromising performance.

While the range—WD71 to WD315—is standard based on frame size and capacity, each unit is prepared accordingly to individual specifications. With the variable multi-foot attachment and adjustable casing, the shape of the motor can even be modified multiple times, including onsite. The coolant supply openings are located on the non-driving side to allow for further ease of modification. The performance range reaches currents up to 690V, for operating modes of S1-S9, regardless of whether the motor is then operated at 50 / 60Hz or using a frequency converter:

Recyclability and Sustainability

As a market-leading manufacturer of recycling solutions and other products and a company driven by our passion for the environment, product recyclability is an important part of their design process. Driven by their desire to improve their environmental performance and integrate sustainable and ethical practices into Glasdon processes, most of their products are recyclable at the end of their service life. Through such, it not only seeks to close the loop between manufacturing and consumerism but contributes to the extension of material life cycles.

Alongside this, many Glasdon products also contain recycled material. Ranging from 15% to as much as 100%, the recycled material in Glasdon products varies depending on material type and colour.

Williams Shippings fast launch, Willfetch is now on the berth at her new home in Pembroke Dock

Williams Shipping’s fast launch, Willfetch is now on the berth at her new home in Pembroke Dock. The vessel is ready and waiting to transfer passengers throughout the haven and the anchorages, continuing the company’s commitment to long-term investment in Pembroke’s marine industry.

The vessel

The Lochin Marine 38G.D.S.V. pilot boat has been part of the Williams Shipping fleet for several years. Named ‘Willfetch’ she has previously transferred ship’s crew, agents, pilots, samplers and engineers from the company’s marine base in the Port of Southampton.

Powered by a pair of Yanmar main engines with generating 740hp, she can reach speeds of 22kts and carry 12 passengers.

Commitment to the marine industry

Williams Shipping signed a new lease with Milford Haven Port Authority in February 2022 which will keep us operating and providing marine services in Pembroke Port for the next 15 years, continuing the company’s commitment to long-term investment in marine and renewables industries.

General Manager of Williams Shipping Pembroke said,” We have been operating in Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven since 2004. In February, we signed a new lease with the port to be able to work even closer with them and our colleagues in the marine industry.

Bringing Willfetch into our Pembroke fleet opens a new service that we can provide to larger vessels and the port itself. We will become one of the only providers of crew transfers and pilot boats in the area, and the company with the most experience.”

Williams Shipping provides the port with services and solutions, including stores, deliveries to ships at the oil and gas terminals, crew transfers, navigation mark servicing, oil pollution prevention services, offshore renewable energy support, marine civil engineering support, including providing crane barges, towage services and supplying containers through our subsidiary Willbox.
