Glasdon expands its cost-effective and low maintenance cycle shelter range.

Designed to coordinate with contemporary architectural environments, the Cadence™ Cycle Shelter and Strada™ Cycle Shelter are cost-effective and low maintenance solutions by Glasdon for cycle storage.

Ideal for city centres, coastal locations and modern outdoor environments, the cycle shelters are available with optional cycle toast racks and stands to accommodate up to 10 bicycles and arrive pre-assembled for immediate installation.

Maximising Space

Designed to sit side-by-side with other Strada or Cadence Shelters, the shelters maximise space and bicycle storage capacity while allowing users the flexibility to provide cover to a greater number of bicycles if required. Available with or without Toast Rack Cycle Stands, the shelters can easily store up to ten bikes and are adaptable to different applications, such as motorbike or scooter storage.

Lowering Maintenance Requirements

Featuring a sturdy yet simple design, both the Cadence Cycle Shelter and Strada Cycle Shelter offer contemporary and stylish cycle storage. With an Armortec® coated steel frame and Rivnut roof panel fixing, Glasdon’s latest cycle shelters prevent steel frame corrosion and protect from weather and vandalism.

Like the curved roof on the Cadence Cycle Shelter, the angled roof design of the Strada Cycle Shelter prevents rain and snow from accumulating on the shelter and, along with the UV protected 3mm PETG roof panels, provides a natural run-off for rainwater and snow.

Providing Strength and Durability

Constructed using corrosion-resistant Armortec coated steel framework and PETG roof panels, the shelters protect the bicycles from weather elements.

To ensure sturdy and safe cycle storage, both shelters utilise a 15mm thick base plate and anchor points to secure the frame to a pre-prepared concrete foundation and a 3mm thick mild steel frame to provide sturdy and durable cycle storage. A one-year warranty is available on both cycle shelters as standard.

Ground-breaking Project successfully crosses the Atlantic Ocean

A pioneering project, supported by Rotec Hydraulics Ltd, has achieved a fully autonomous ship sail across the Atlantic Ocean.

Solo and unaided, the Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship (MAS) set sail from Plymouth harbour in the UK and reached its end destination of Plymouth USA on 30th June 2022 after 36 days at sea and 3,900 miles, having made two stops in Horta (Azores) and Halifax (Canada).

The futuristic vessel was powered by AI and powered using renewable solar energy technology, and a backup diesel generator for night sailing. Throughout the journey, the vessel collected data that researchers hope will provide critical information in the battle to safeguard the future of our oceans. A challenging project relied on a diverse team that spanned 10 countries and 3 continents, including Rotec Hydraulics Ltd.

ProMare, a US based non-profit organisation with a branch in Plymouth UK, teamed up with IBM to build the third Mayflower and asked Rotec to supply a range of hoses and hose assemblies to support the project. Rotec was also pleased to be able to help spread the word of crowdfunding efforts at the start of the project.

Brett Phaneuf, Managing Director of the MAS Project, commented: “[The Mayflower Project is] ushering us into a new phase of oceanographic and climatological research with state-of-the-art technology.”

“This project brings a number of new  technologies together in a way that hasn’t been done before. There are some smaller autonomous crafts in existence, however nothing anywhere near this scale in terms of size and technicality.”

ROCOL Collaborative Wire Rope Lubrication Research Rewarded

The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) has given Product Development Engineer Dr Chris Dyson and his colleagues the Walter D. Hodson Award.

The Walter D. Hodson Award honours one of STLE’s founding fathers. It is given to the lead author of the best paper written by an STLE member 35 years of age or younger and published by the society in the previous year. The purpose of the award is to stimulate the interest of young engineers in the science of tribology and lubrication and the activities of STLE.

The award was given for the paper “Representative Tribometer Testing of Wire Rope Fretting Contacts: The Effect of Lubrication on Fretting Wear.

This project was one output from several years of collaborative research on wire rope tribology between ROCOL, The School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds, and the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics at the University of Bradford.

Chris said, “This is really an award for the whole project team. I’m thankful to my co-authors, colleagues and everyone who has been involved in this. The collaborative work this paper describes has been a huge success. It has given us all great insight into fretting wear and lubrication, facilitated conversations in the wire rope industry about the importance of lubrication and running-in in maximising asset life, and given students opportunities to work on industrially linked research projects. We are grateful to STLE for giving us this award.”

The co-authors who also received this award were: Dr Richard Chittenden (University of Leeds), Professor Martin Priest and Professor Malcolm Fox (both University of Bradford), and Dr Bill Hopkins (retired Technical Director at ROCOL).

Prof Priest, who also received an award, said: “Chris is an outstanding researcher, innovator and practitioner who I have worked with throughout his career; from undergraduate student to PhD student and then KTP Associate at ROCOL, and now as a collaborator in research.  The work we do together champions student research projects, and the many students we have worked with have been inspired by the experience of working on innovative projects of genuine value to industry

Maintaining and nurturing long-term relationships with high technology companies such as ROCOL is vital to academia, as it grounds everything we do in the demands of international industry.  ROCOL often seeks the views of trusted academics such as Malcolm, Richard and I, on their latest challenges, and their staff, notably Chris in this instance, contribute their skills and experience to the University sector.”

The STLE is the premier technical society for tribologists and lubrication engineers. It has 250 member companies and over 13,000 individuals as members, many of whom are employed by the world’s leading corporations, academic institutions and government agencies.

MJR Power and Automation Receives Award for Revolutionary System

Teesside’s leading marine electrical engineering company – MJR Power and Automation – has secured a highly acclaimed award at one of the industry’s most coveted events.

Based in Stockton-on-Tees, MJR Power and Automation was announced as winners of the Innovations Showcase Category for renewable energy at Seawork, Europe’s largest commercial marine exhibition.

The award was received in recognition of the firm’s game changing offshore charging system that is set to transform the marine sector by facilitating and speeding up the process of electrification of vessels.

Set to be the world’s first offshore wind vessel charging system demonstrated in the field with energy delivered direct from the wind turbine, the flagship project secured funding as part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

The charge points will enable all electric crew transfer vessels and other offshore support vessels, for example SOV’s to connect in the field to a 100% green energy source generated directly by the offshore wind turbines for the efficient, safe and reliable transfer of power.

Diverse Marine & High Speed Transfers announce build of two further CTVs on First Day of Seawork 2022

Diverse Marine and High Speed Transfers are proud to announce the contract signing of two further hybrid propulsion Chartwell Marine Ambitious Class CTV’s, following on from the success of ‘HST Ella’ delivered last summer.

The international expansion of the offshore wind sector is creating significant opportunities and challenges for the maritime supply chain and rewarding operators, builders and designers of innovative craft that meet legislative requirements, whilst reducing vessel emissions and fuel consumption.

These two new vessels, to be named ‘HST Frances’ and ‘HST Millie’ are developed sisters of ‘HST Ella’ that incorporate subtle changes following the operation of the vessel on multiple European projects over the last few months.

The catamaran’s unique hybrid propulsion system incorporates an electric motor alongside a diesel engine, which drives a high-performance changeable pitch propeller (CPP) system. At low speeds, such as port departure and arrival or whilst loitering in the wind farm zone, this allows for silent, zero emissions operation enabling the vessel to comply with port air quality requirements. At transit speeds, it can perform capably and efficiently while ensuring the comfort of technicians. The Chartwell Marine hull form with high bollard push and superior bow height ensures confident transfer at high wave heights.

Other features of the two new craft include enhanced foredeck capacity and wheelhouse visibility, which enables skippers, crews and technicians to safely navigate challenging logistical assignments. For HST, the vessels will support an ongoing commitment to the highest standards of service for offshore wind farms, while adding new levels and standards of efficiency, versatility and flexibility.

MJR Power and Automation to Present Worlds First of its Kind Offshore Charging System at The Largest European Commercial Marine Exhibition

Well respected industry leader in marine electrical engineering – MJR Power and Automation  – has been invited to present the company’s ground-breaking offshore charging system at this year’s highly acclaimed Seawork 2022 event.

The event – taking place in Southampton this week – brings together marine and civils professionals from all over Europe across three days.

MJR Power and Automation’s experienced Sales and Business Development Manager, Ryan Reilly will present the innovation and will be joining other high-profile experts to discuss the company’s Offshore Wind On-Turbine Electrical Vessel Charging System at the Commercial Marine Conference – Hybrid & Electric Propulsion which will be held on Thursday 23rd June at 9am.

Set to be the world’s first offshore wind vessel charging system demonstrated in the field with energy delivered direct from the wind turbine, the flagship project secured funding as part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

Most recently, the company has announced construction and in-house testing have now been successfully completed on the offshore charging system that is set to revolutionise the offshore wind sector.

The charge points will enable all electric crew transfer vessels and other offshore support vessels to connect in the field to a 100% green energy source generated directly by the offshore wind turbines for the efficient, safe and reliable transfer of power.

This innovation will break down the existing range barriers and increase the uptake by vessel owners and operators with the transition to fully electric and green propulsion systems, for retrofit and new build vessels. In combination with other field-proven technologies, the charging system will be an important part for government and offshore wind owners and operators, to achieve their net zero maritime operations targets, and switch away from fossil fuels. The ability to charge when in the field, will significantly accelerate adoption of current emission free propulsion systems which will be a major asset for the decarbonisation of the global maritime sector.

MJR Announces Successful Project Completion for UK Largest Independent Towage Company

The UK’s leading marine power and electrical engineering specialist – MJR Power and Automation – has successfully engineered, supplied and installed its industry-leading MAP OEtm – Alarm & Monitoring System – for East Yorkshire-based firm, SMS Towage.

SMS Towage – specialists in offering 24/7 service to shipping companies and recognised as the UK’s largest independent towage firm – appointed Teesside based MJR Power and Automation to deliver a complete upgrade of the alarm and monitoring system on one of its flagship tugboats, Roman.

With its user-friendly interface and redundant system architecture, MJR’s unique MAP OETM alarm and monitoring package delivers excellent operational functionality on Roman for continuous monitoring and diagnostics, backed up with MJR’s service team to provide service and through life support.

Completed in just less than four months – which is a rapid turnaround for a project of this nature in the current market conditions – MJR successfully completed:

  • The removal of an existing system,
  • Installation of a new alarm and bridge panels complete with HMI’s, outstations, and alarms located in the engine room,
  • Installation of the new alarm throughout the ship’s bridge and Chief’s cabin whilst retaining existing instrumentation and sensors.

And on the back of the successful contract completion, MJR has secured several other contracts with the leading towage firm including alarm testing, CCTV upgrades and relay replacement on Roman, as well as a series of additional projects on the company’s tugboat fleet.

Marine Fire Safety Secures Supply Agreement with Williams Shipping at Seawork 2022

Marine Fire Safety, specialists in firefighting and lifesaving equipment for the marine industry, has secured a supply agreement with one of the UK’s leading marine and logistics experts, Williams Shipping.

Marine Fire Safety will be providing a full range of fire and safety equipment and service support for 16 of the vessels within the Williams Shipping fleet, as part of their recently launched Workboat 1.2.3 service package. This includes the supply of liferafts, man-overboard equipment, pyrotechnics, portable fire extinguishers, and the servicing of their existing fixed Stat-X and CO2 fire systems.

Philip Williams, Managing Director of Williams Shipping, comments, “Staying on top of equipment service intervals and expiry dates, for all the fire and safety equipment onboard our vessels, is a time-consuming business. Working with Marine Fire Safety and signing up to a fire and safety management scheme like Workboat 1.2.3, will alleviate a lot of that burden and give us more time to focus on other areas of the business.
