This prestigious award recognises achievements, activities and initiatives employed throughout the area of health and safety across a period of the last 12 months. This coupled with their recent RoSPA Gold Award, demonstrates an unrivalled commitment to ensuring health and safety remains the number one priority.

The project, which was delivered using specialist marine plant, involved a significant environmental interface.

Unique Group wins multi-million-dollar HBOT system contract from HMS Group

Unique Group, global innovators in subsea technologies and engineering, has announced the sale of its Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT) system, Uni-Heal, to HMS DXBone Excellence Center, a part of HMS Group of Hospitals in the UAE.

In partnership with Hie Capital, Unique Group will deliver its bespoke technology to Dubai-based HMS DXBone Excellence Center by February 2023. This tri-party partnership paves the way for the creation of one of the largest HBOT centres in the Middle East. As part of the contract with HMS Group, Unique Group will design, manufacture and install a twelve-patient HBOT system along with set-up and maintenance services from its UAE office, while Hie Capital will offer their consultancy services for setting up the HBOT center.

Part of the HMS Group of Hospitals, which operates more than four speciality hospitals in the UAE, HMS DxBone Excellence Center is specialised for orthopedic services in the country. The hospital offers value-added healthcare services to residents in the UAE and GCC, with leading medical and surgical consultants providing state-of-the-art orthopedic and musculoskeletal solutions.

The HBOT system is designed and developed by Unique Group’s UAE and South Africa offices in compliance with stringent design codes for medical devices such as EC93-42. It has a fully digital chamber control system which is ergonomically designed for easy operation and optimum healing experience for medical conditions ranging from carbon monoxide poisoning to diabetic wound care and non-healing cuts. Unique Group will provide the technical support required to integrate the equipment in the hospital and train staff members to operate the system.

Countdown to Ocean Business 2023 as Registration Opens

Registration is now open for Ocean Business 2023, the global technology and science exhibition for marine industries.

The three-day event, which runs from April 18-20 at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, is open to all visitors for free by registering online at www.oceanbusiness.com.

With more than 300 manufacturers and service providers already booked for the sold-out exhibition, this year’s Ocean Business promises to attract record crowds from around the world, offering unrivalled networking opportunities.

The Training and Demonstration programme – featuring 130-plus hours of new technologies demonstrated in the dockside waters, onboard vessels and in the classroom – is also now live and can be viewed on the Ocean Business website.

The sessions will allow visitors to see tomorrow’s world today and meet the experts behind cutting-edge technology in an ocean environment.

CP&A Talks Automated Cranes at Virtual Conference

Casper, Phillips & Associates Inc. (CP&A) was among speakers at the Overhead Crane and Hoist Innovation Conference earlier this month (October).

CP&A was represented by Richard Phillips, mechanical engineer, who tackled the subject of automation alongside Richard Emmer, business development manager, automation at Magnetek, a Columbus McKinnon brand. CP&A offers a wide variety of services, including procurement, specification, design, manufacturing review, modification, and accident investigation.

The free-of-charge conference was hosted by Progressive Media International along with its global media partner, TOC Worldwide. The conference was delivered digitally on October 19 and included a series of papers that addressed the latest in cutting-edge technology from the Marine Lifting and handling industry, focusing on the key equipment used in the logistics, manufacturing, and warehousing sectors. Attendees learnt about the innovations that can help to improve an operation’s efficiency and safety. Presentations also covered performance data analysis, braking systems, anti-sway technology, and other relevant topics.

Phillips brought design experience with automated crane systems to the conference. He has worked on both sides of these projects: first, crane procurement—writing specifications, evaluating bids, addressing specification deviation requests, and design reviews; and on the contractor side—designing power transmission systems, providing construction / fabrication support, and authoring operation and maintenance manuals.

He said: “There are lots of reasons why automation is a buzz topic. Automated cranes can be run without operators so it can reduce the overhead costs and increase productivity. This is a big deal in the current economic climate as many countries / markets are trying to curb inflation and boost production. Rick and I come from different backgrounds; he had a lot of interesting talking points, and we were able to give different perspectives.”

People and automation
The automation session attracted a variety of attendees, with a demographic largely centered on production and procurement functions. The delegation put questions to Phillips and Emmer about modifying existing cranes to be automated and how much labour needs to be replaced before automated cranes are worth the cost.

While they weren’t directly addressed during this Overhead Crane and Hoist Innovation Conference item, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are also part of the wider automation discussion.

Sensors have been placed on powertrain components, such as gearboxes, to actively monitor and predict when certain maintenance tasks need to be performed. This is an extension of how powertrain components are tested without IoT devices. Instead of a technician hooking up all the special equipment for the test, the testing equipment will be permanently mounted on the gearbox. Here, data will be constantly sent to AI systems where algorithms are used to dynamically suggest optimum maintenance intervals.

However, Phillips said: “With all this complexity, sometimes we forget about the basics. A state-of-the-art IoT and AI monitoring system will not fix a bad design. If a hoist powertrain isn’t properly designed, the AI system will suggest an unreasonable amount of maintenance. On the other hand, there are always risks and costs for moving to automation. There isn’t an answer for every single industry and every lifting application. You would be amazed at the number of decisions a crane operator makes on a simple lift—trying to program all of that is a very big challenge.”

“It is still an emerging technology,” continued Phillips. “Although there are automated cranes, they are not all automated to the same extent. Some cranes have special instruments that will inspect wire ropes and automatic bearing lubrication systems, while others only have the travel motions automated. New technology is coming out very quickly. One of the biggest issues is that the automation industry needs to start standardizing products and interfaces. A lot of the suppliers come up with great new designs and interfaces; however, they don’t like to give away all their research and development to their competitors. I think the next big step will be to have standard platforms across the different industries that any supplier can easily interface with. Right now, it seems all the different automation packages are custom and / or proprietary to a specific supplier.”

Exciting place to work
This technological drive dovetails with ongoing efforts by industry stakeholders to attract young people into the lifting sector, while newcomers may have been among conference delegates.

“It helps to have exciting projects to work on,” enthused Phillips. “Right now, the market is very competitive, especially in the U.S. A lot of the current research at universities is on robotics. If you think about it, automated cranes could be considered giant robots. Arguably, industrial lifting hasn’t been revolutionized in years—generations, even. Now, with the advent of automation, IoT, and AI, that is changing. Meanwhile, training practices and recruitment of the next generation of skilled workers are challenges all companies will need to address in coming years.”

  • The latest presentation follows CP&A’s recent appearance on a panel that took questions from an American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) delegation. The company’s past president, Rich W. Phillips, a structural engineer, was among panellists that explored, ‘Engineering solutions to your container handling equipment obstacles’ at the Facilities Engineering Seminar & Expo.

Valeport appoints new Innovation and Product Manager

Leading manufacturer of oceanographic and hydrographic instrumentation, Valeport, has appointed Iain Slade as Innovation and Product Manager. Iain comes from a position as a Surveyor and Hydrographic Training Programme Manager at Fugro and Fugro Academy.

In the newly created role at Totnes-based Valeport, Iain will be responsible for formulating ideas for new products and solutions, as well as managing the New Product Introduction (NPI) process from prototype to finished project. This includes reviewing existing products to ensure they remain relevant and meet customers’ current and future needs.

With over 18 years’ experience as an accredited hydrographic professional working within a range of sectors including: civil hydrography, marine renewables, coastal monitoring and offshore oil and gas, Iain has an established international reputation within the hydrographic community.

Iain has a strong commercial background and joins Valeport following 12 years across various roles at Fugro and Fugro Academy, where he was involved in operations offshore as a surveyor, and designing and delivering the internationally recognised FIG/IHO/ICA (IBSC) Category B Applied Hydrographic Survey Training Programme for Fugro Academy.

As a Director of The Hydrographic Society UK, Iain also helped manage the development, external accreditation and implementation of a Hydrographic Professional Accreditation Scheme (HPAS), and now sits on the International Federation of Hydrographic Societies (IFHS) HPAS steering committee as one of the UK representatives.  Iain holds an MSc in Hydrography (IBSC Cat ‘A’ recognised Programme), and a BSc in Ocean Science from the University of Plymouth.

SolarDuck will build Japans first offshore floating solar demonstrator in Tokyo Bay

SolarDuck’s partner, Tokyu Land Corporation, has been awarded the contract from Tokyo Metropolitan Government to realise the Tokyo Bay ESG Project.

This project is aimed at realising local production and consumption of energy in the Tokyo Bar Area through the implementation of cutting-edge, sustainable technologies

The Tokyo Bay ESG Project’s consortium consists of Tokyu Land Corporation (project owner), s (offshore floating solar technology) and Everblue (automated sailing boat with battery storage).

SolarDuck B.V. (the Netherlands), Tokyu Land Corporation (Japan) and Everblue Technologies Inc. (Japan) are pleased to announce that their proposal for Japan’s first offshore floating solar power generation and automated sailing boat technology demonstration has been selected as of November 4, 2022, as part of the Tokyo Bay eSG Project, an advanced project led by the Bureau of Policy Planning of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

This project is part of the Tokyo Bay eSG Project, which aims to create a sustainable city that looks 50 to 100 years into the future, and aims to implement cutting-edge technologies in the fields of “cutting-edge renewable energy,” “next-generation mobility,” and “environmental improvement and resource recycling” in the central breakwater area. The project aims to realise the world’s most advanced technologies from the Tokyo Bay Area. This project was selected in the field of “cutting-edge renewable energy.

The three companies aim to realise local production for local consumption of energy in the Tokyo Bay Area in the future through the practical application of Japan’s first “offshore floating photovoltaic power generation system,” the use of renewable energy generated on the ocean to power electric-powered boats, and the demonstration of marine transportation of storage batteries.

Hydroscand France to acquire Pathel Industrie SAS

Hydroscand France has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in Pathel Industrie SAS, with subsidiaries in France, UK and Spain. Pathel Industrie is headquartered in Lyon, France.

Pathel Industrie was founded in 1975 and their main business consists of industrial hoses and fittings. With close to 50 years of experience, Pathel Industrie is positioned as a leader in providing a broad range of quality couplings and fittings, stainless steel and technical hoses. Through its subsidiary Clarel, the company offers additional expertise and services for production and assembly of hoses, training, and product know-how in nine different locations in France.

The acquisition is in line with Hydroscand’s strategic ambition to become a leading player in hydraulics and industrial hoses.

Charles Cleghorn Ltd – A Radical Development

A major stockholding of the Forani & Pecorari bronze pump range is being established by Charles Cleghorn Ltd at their new Royston, Herts warehouse.

Although first brought into the UK in 1986 by Cleghorn Waring, stocks have not been readily available for some time.   The bronze centrifugal bilge, deckwash & fire pumps can now be supplied promptly, in a variety of sizes, predominantly in 1 1/2″, 2″ & 2 1/2″ bore, offering flow rates from 27 to 90 cu.m/hr ( 450 to 1500 lit/min ).
The centrifugals are complemented by further stock of Forani’s bronze turbine ( regenerative ) seawater pumps, in sizes from 1″ up to 2 1/2″, widely used for engine cooling & particularly for systems cooling ( hydraulics, gearbox, refrigeration etc ) in the smaller models.
All can be supplied in bare shaft form, with manual or electric clutches if needed, or as compact 3-phase electric motor pump units.
With an enviable reputation for longevity & reliability, the FP range is backed by a stockholding of spares to ensure that down-time is at a minimum when service or maintenance is required.
