Maritime Partner Delivers Electric Passenger Boat

Tuesday, 20th August 2024

Maritime Partner AS in Alesund has recently delivered an 18m electric passenger boat – catamaran to Moskenes Shipping. The boat, an ALUSAFE CAT 18 EL, has an all-electric propulsion system and a capacity for 75 passengers.

Electric catamaran

This is an important delivery for Maritime Partner, and a milestone since it is the first all-electric catamaran we are building, says Henrik Myklebust, VP Sales at Maritime Partner. ABB has delivered the complete propulsion system including the electric motors and batteries.

Two air-cooled electric motors and frequency converters and a battery capacity of total 524 kWt gives the electric passenger boat a speed of 12 knots. Running on electric operation, with an efficient hull design and built using aluminum in the construction, the boat is as “green” as it gets with today’s knowledge and technology.

Aluminum is an environmentally friendly alternative that, when recycled, requires very little energy to be resurrected as a full-fledged material for new applications.

Shipping company

Moskenes Shipping is a local shipping company that operates passenger transport and charters in and around Reine in Lofoten. The boat will be used for the company’s route in the Reinefjord, a route which they have operated for 26 years. From 2023, a new ten-year contract was entered into with Nordland County Municipality for the operation of the boat route from Reine and the places Rostad, Kirkefjord and Vinstad. In addition to permanent residents, the route handles a large number of tourists each year from Reine.

‘The green islands’

The boat is part of the project “the green islands”, where the goal is zero emissions on land and sea. Lofoten “the green islands” is a private-public partnership for green growth and conversion to the low-emission Lofoten society. Together with residents, businesses and the public sector, work is being done to ensure that the future of Lofoten is renewable, attractive, sustainable, viable and contributes to achieving the UN’s climate goals.

Design and arrangement

The boat is a new model designed by Engineer Ola Lilloe-Olsen. Maritime Partner has been responsible for the detailed design, engineering and construction.

In order for all passenger facilities to be available for everyone, the boat has been arranged in line with requirements for universal design. The main salon has access from both the fore and aft decks.

The lounge has seating for 75 pax and handicap/wheelchair space in accordance with the regulations. Several seats are arranged with tables, which makes the boat suitable for both sightseeing and transporting tourists.

There are large window surfaces that contribute to a bright and light interior with a good view for everyone on board. The top deck is accessed for passengers from the aft deck, where a wheelchair lift is also installed.

In addition, the boat has plenty of space for luggage and a dog cage on the aft deck.

The boat is built in accordance with the Norwegian Maritime Directorate’s rules for passenger ships and navigation area 4. This includes both design, safety equipment and electronics with navigation and communication.

Maritime Partner

Maritime Partner AS sells and builds fast boats of its own design. Maritime Partner has customers worldwide and has surpassed 2,300 delivered boats. Boat types range from offshore rescue boats, workboats, patrol boats, tourist boats, and other fast boats under the brand names Alusafe, Seabear/Sjøbjørn, and Weedo.

Inland & Coastal promotes ‘Get Onboard Safely’ at conference

Tuesday, 9th July 2024

Following a successful run at Seawork 2024, Pontoon and water access specialist Inland and Coastal Marina Systems continued to promote its Get Onboard Safely message at the Port, Skills and Safety Conference which took place at London’s Stamford Bridge on 2 July.

Representing the UK’s professional safety and skills membership organisation for ports, every year Port, Skills and Safety (PSS) hosts a conference where its members are invited to come together to discuss the key issues of safety and skills in ports.

This year, the annual conference included even more time to network and speak with exhibitors, with the afternoon session seeing the finalists of the inaugural PSS awards presenting on safety and skills initiatives which they have undertaken.

Get Onboard Safely

Keen to listen to the port and harbour professionals, Inland & Coastal was on hand at the conference to promote its Get Onboard Safely campaign and discuss its wide range of solutions on offer to help mitigate potential hazards in and around pontoons

With over 20 years’ experience, Inland & Coastal understands the physical, environmental and commercial challenges for ports and harbours and believes that safe access is the key starting point to a well-run operation.

Outdated Boarding Methods

Many ports and harbours still operate using antiquated methods, such as vertical wall ladders, narrow gangways and poorly designed mooring systems, which can be a hotspot for hazardous slips, trips and falls. Over 34% of accidents resulting in lost productivity occur when getting on and off boats. Inland & Coastal recently joined Port, Skills and Safety to better listen to and understand the needs of safety and operations professionals.

This association will enable greater collaboration and innovation on safer ways of working in and around pontoons, and as the ports industry’s leading body for safety and skills, PSS are perfectly placed to help ensure it meets the highest safety standards in everything it does.

“We are keen to be collaborating with Port, Skills and Safety, whose vision and drive match our own dedication to safer access to boats and shared commitment to excellence,” says Jon Challis, Head of Business Development at Inland and Coastal.

“We continually strive to ensure that every individual, whether working shore side on the pontoons or as part of the crew heading out to sea, can work safely with confidence and security.”

“We welcome the initiative from our member, Inland and Coastal Marina Systems, to raise awareness of safer access to boats in ports,” says Debbie Cavaldoro, CEO Port Skills and Safety Limited. “Their ‘Get on Board Safely’ campaign message was a prominent feature at our recent annual members’ conference in London.”

Inland & Coastal Marina Systems

At Inland and Coastal Marina Systems, we manufacture and install water access solutions. From access platforms, leisure marina pontoons to commercial concrete breakwaters and crew transfer vessel berths, our mooring systems are designed to enable boats of all shapes and sizes to moor safely and securely.
