Stornoway Port on the Isle of Lewis is the largest harbour in the Outer Hebrides. Well sheltered and easy to access at all states of the tide and in all weather conditions, the 80-berth marina provides a safe haven for island hoppers and day sailors.

With visitor safety one of its highest priorities, the Stornoway Port Authority recently installed GRP QuartzGrip Flat Plate throughout the port’s slipway facility. Step on Safety supplied over 165 square metres of the anti-slip 4mm floor panels, pre-cut and pre-drilled to enable port staff to simply bolt them down to the existing floor surfaces quickly and with minimum disruption.

Record breaking results for The SMS Group – interior outfit and marine refurbishment exceeds all expectations

The SMS Group, based within the Port of Southampton, is pleased to announce the busiest year in the company’s history.

The company, traditionally a ship repairer, has invested in a team of industry professionals to establish, develop and deliver in the challenging interior outfit and marine refurbishment sector within the cruise industry – and 2021 was THE defining year.

Dan Lockyer, who heads up the team, said: “2021 was our year.

“It’s the fourth year on this journey and, ironically, the 22nd year that I’ve been in this industry.  On the back of the Covid hiatus and the industry restarting, we’ve achieved some phenomenal milestones.”

He added: “Concurrent working on multiple vessels simultaneously is now the norm.

“We’ve recruited new project management and estimating resources.  We’ve worked globally.

“We’ve attracted new customers and supported old with their vessel reactivations.

“We’ve invested in new storage facilities, and we’ve expanded our supply chain. We’re halfway through our financial year and we will exceed all of our expectations.”

The company has completed cruise refit marine refurbishment projects across Europe and currently has a further three superyacht projects ‘live’ and four cruise projects under contract and in the planning/pre-deployment stages.

With a pipeline in excess of £5 million, Darren Smith, Head of Business Development, said: “By staying true to our core values of ‘turnkey project management, ‘value engineering’ and the ‘lifetime value of customer relationships, ’ we’ve genuinely benefitted as the industry has restarted.”

He added: “2022 is going to be so exciting for both the industry and our business.

“We’re still recruiting. We’re looking for new people to fill new roles.

“We have a serious pipeline, much of which is under contract, and we’re really going to push for continued growth in 2022.

“You’ll see a real step change in our business as we continue to support industry events such as Cruise Ship Interiors Expo in London and Miami, Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, and Shippax in Stockholm.”

57 Metre Blades for Twentyshilling Wind Farm

Collett & Sons have completed all wind turbine component deliveries to Twentyshilling Wind Farm, located approximately 4.8km south of Sanquhar, in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland.

Appointed to undertake all planning and deliveries for the 9 Vestas V117 turbines in June 2021, Collett began transporting the components from King George V Dock.  Each of the components for each complete turbine, the three tower sections, three blades, nacelle, drive train and hub, would require specialist transport logistics for the 170-mile journey to the site.

With Collett Consulting having already surveyed the route in detail, including undertaking a test drive of the 170-mile journey from the port simulating the loaded blade components, Collett identified several necessary route modifications.  Most importantly, this highlighted the access to the wind farm site itself.

2 miles from the construction site, on approach to the wind farm, the 57-metre loaded blades would be unable to facilitate the necessary left turn to access.  It was proposed that the construction of a turning head at this location would provide the required clearance to allow all 27 of the blades to safely navigate the turn.

Identifying this pinch point during the test drive allowed for the construction of a turning head at Eliock Bridge ahead of the component deliveries, this would ensure that the vehicles could safely turn around off the main road and complete the right turn on the approach to site.

Working to a two-day delivery schedule, with three deliveries per convoy, Collett called upon their specialist fleet to deliver the 81 individual components.

Utilising their specialist fleet, the Collett Team employed super wing carriers to transport the 57-metre, 14.9-tonne blades.  In addition, the use of these specialist super wing carriers allowed Collett to overcome issues of the vertical alignment from the main road to Eliock Bridge, avoiding the need for work to be undertaken on the listed structure.

For the other components, the 25-metre long bottom and 26-metre middle towers, with weights of 67 and 44.5 Tonnes, Collett utilised specialist clamp trailers, whilst the remaining components, the top towers, nacelle, drive trains and hubs were transported using Collett’s 5 and 6 axle step-frame trailers.

Working to a detailed delivery schedule, produced in line with the site construction needs, over a period of 14 weeks, the Collett Team delivered each of the components from King George V Dock to the Dumfries & Galloway construction site.  All components travelled under Collett escort, with Police escorts in attendance for the blades, tower sections, nacelles and drive trains.

All deliveries to the 38MW Twentyshilling Wind Farm are now complete with the 9 Vestas V117 140 metre tip turbines expected to be fully operational in 2022.

Film-Ocean – growth & future expansion drives investment for a purpose-built complex

Film Ocean Ltd (Film-Ocean), a Stapem Group company, announces that construction contractors have broken ground on its new purpose-built facilities in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.  The bespoke development is due for completion in late summer 2022.

The development represents a significant investment for Film-Ocean, with the design and capacity of the project being driven by future growth and development plans.

The new facility will accommodate the demands and needs of the business and its employees with modern office, meeting and conference facilities.  The large workshop is designed to accommodate the company’s expanding ROV fleet, with designated equipment maintenance and test areas.

A key element of the new test facilities is a 5m3 Test Tank with an overhead gantry crane to accommodate wet testing of ROVs and tooling.  The test tank includes innovative features such as a ‘flow generator’ to simulate subsurface currents, ensuring the testing of equipment is as realistic to the prospective working environments as possible.  Client engagement features include an observation viewing platform for visitors and inspection areas, along with technical auditing facilities with CCTV coverage of underwater testing facilities.

The new development will offer a dedicated Remote Onshore Control Room to support remote inspection and ROV operations.  Film-Ocean has recently delivered a successful campaign for ‘Remote Support’ during an inspection work scope. The service allowed onshore-based inspection and CP and NDT specialists access to and control offshore equipment for the duration of the project.

Film-Ocean continues to invest significantly in expanding its ROV fleet, recent investments include a Schilling Heavy Duty Work Class ROV and a further SMD Quasar 150HP Work Class ROV.

On contractors breaking ground on the new site, Scott Jenney, Film-Ocean CEO, stated: “2021 has been an extremely busy year for Film-Ocean, and it’s reassuring to see we remain a trusted service provider for our expanding client base.  Our growth has enabled us to introduce several new job roles within the business, which is aligned with our people strategy, and it’s great to be able to welcome new, highly talented work colleagues to the team, adding to the positive workplace culture that we already enjoy.

Recent investments have enabled us to offer further support to our clients. For example, the addition of larger Work Class ROV assets has enabled us to expand our capabilities significantly and deliver on work scopes that we would previously not have been in a position to support.

Senior Management Change at Teignbridge Propellers

As part of a planned succession strategy, the New Year saw a change at the top of Teignbridge Propellers International Ltd. Mark Phare has moved to the position of Group Managing Director, succeeding David Hunt.

Hunt remains a Director and shareholder of Teignbridge Propellers along with David Duncan the Chairman. Phare who has been with Teignbridge for 19 years previously held the positions of Operations Director and Group Sales & Marketing Director.

“Mark is an experienced executive with a strong track record of leadership and an extensive knowledge of the marine industry and the sectors in which we operate,” said David Hunt.

He went on to say, “The Teignbridge board has done an excellent job steering the company, specialists in ship propeller design and manufacture,  through the past two years of the pandemic. We have developed a strong cash position which has underpinned the rollout of the company’s strategic initiatives. I have every confidence that Mark and the board will continue this work”

Mark Phare commented “David has implemented a number of positive and successful changes in recent years that have made Teignbridge Propellers a stronger brand in the global propulsion market.  We invested $1.0m USD last year in new CNC lathes to enhance our capabilities and just before Christmas we moved into our newly built $1.5m USD offices.

I look forward to developing the established strategy with my fellow directors and continuing with the purchasing of new machinery to further enhance our capabilities.  We will be turning the previous office space in the main factory building into additional manufacturing space which will include a designated area for training our team of apprentice engineers.  A further new building is already underway at our Newton Abbot headquarters as we continue to invest in the future.

The outlook for Teignbridge is extremely positive.  We have a unique arsenal of highly qualified, experienced and skilled people supported by pioneering software, modern, technically advanced machinery and our own test boat.  Our focus is on innovative product development, designing and manufacturing highly efficient propulsion systems and customer service excellence.”

Mark Phare :
Mark began his career as a Deck Officer in the merchant navy, studying at Plymouth University up to Master Mariner and serving for 11 years on a wide range of merchant vessels across the globe.
He then joined Caleb Brett (Intertek) for a total of 14 years as a Marine Surveyor and then Operations Manager before moving to Teignbridge in 2003.
He has held several senior management roles within the Company, including Operations Director and Sales & Marketing Director.

Mark is an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute (AFNI). Mark is now responsible for all the Teignbridge Group Companies, including the UK Headquarters in Newton Abbot, the Foundry and Factory in India, the Sales Office, Workshop and Warehouse in Dubai and the Sales Office in Penang.

Diverse Marine & Caister Volunteer Lifeboat Service to Build New Lifeboat

Diverse Marine Ltd. and Caister Volunteer Lifeboat Service Ltd. are pleased to announce that the two parties have signed a new vessel construction agreement for a first of class 14m Medina Class Lifeboat.

After a competitive international tender process using a design from Walker Marine Design, the lifeboat construction at Cowes on the Isle of Wight completes the evolutionary process that saw the original Medina Class Lifeboat built very close to the current build location over 35 years ago – before the design was adopted by the Dutch who built the station’s current Lifeboat, ‘Bernard Matthews II’ 17 years ago.

The 14m self-righting Lifeboat features an aluminium hull, deck and coach roof together with a resiliently mounted GRP wheelhouse to reduce noise and vibration for the crew.  The fully air-conditioned wheelhouse layout has been designed for up to six crew, all with designated AllSalt Maritime SHOXS 2000 seats.  Configuration is for a central helm station forward, nav station aft to stbd and an additional dedicated space for stretcher and casualties.

Twin Scania DI13-077M main propulsion engines drive twin Hamilton HJ364 water jet units for speeds in excess of 35 knots.  Twin helm stations will feature Hamilton Jet’s AVX control system and Jet-Anchor functionality for station keeping. A comprehensive navigation and communications suite will be supplied by Boat Electrics and Electronics Ltd.

The vessel has commenced build and will be delivered in 2022.

Unique Group boosts its Make in India drive with the expansion of diving manufacturing capabilities

Leading integrated subsea and offshore solutions provider, Unique Group, has expanded its diving manufacturing capabilities in Vadodara as part of the company’s “Make in India” growth strategy. This is in addition to the multi-million-rupee investment made in 2020, which together will provide the infrastructure to support contractors and the Indian Navy and defense sector’s diving requirements in the region.

The state-of-the-art facility, which spans over 20,000 sq ft of manufacturing and assembly, is currently seeing the manufacturing of classed Saturation Diving Systems and Submersible vehicles for key customers in the region, including owners of commercial diving vessels.

To boost its “Make in India” initiative, the company has also started locally manufacturing Launch and Recovery systems including hydraulic controls as well as electrical switchboards and panels. For future expansion, indigenised Unmanned Surface Vessels (USV) and other key integrated projects are also being planned from the new facilities.

The company has set up class-approved partner facilities in the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, providing clients with increased accessibility throughout India. Plans are also underway to establish a presence in the Eastern part of India over the coming months. Signaling accelerated growth through 2021 with rising demand for diving products, the company aims to expand the team to over 200 employees, as the projects progress through different phases.

By continuing to train our teams, we can offer excellent customer service and confidence to our customers

Our teams receive regular training in several aspects of their roles. The British Fluid Power Association (BFPA) offer a suite of industry specific training courses. In November we held not one but two, two-day BFPA Hose Assembly Skills Training Courses, at our head office in Nottingham.

We had a good cross section of team members taking the course, from Sales Managers to Mobile Hose Technicians to Branch Technicians.

Here are just some of the comments from those who attended:

Rob Roseveare, Mobile Hose Technician at our Bodmin branch said: “The BFPA Course was excellently delivered by Stephen Dilks as always. He is happy to answer any questions and gives good suggestions to alternative methods to achieve better results.

“After 10 years of working within the hydraulic hose industry, this course keeps everyone up to date with all the latest industry standards, and new practices to keep us as engineers informed and safe and keeping customer downtime to minimum.

“The course content is very in-depth when looking at the Thread Form chapter. You come away with a better understanding, of how to identify the different types of hose inserts and adaptors Hydroscand keeps as standard in stock.”

John Vincent, who recently joined Hydroscand as Mobile Technician at our Birmingham branch added: “I attended the BFPA course and found it very interesting. It was a real eye opener to the dangers when dealing with hydraulics and making it a safer environment.

“I also learned about the hoses, fittings, measurements and thread types…very useful course and I enjoyed it.”

Inland and Coastal Marina Systems installs CTV pontoon for Scotlands largest windfarm

Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) has installed a new 30m pontoon for the Montrose Port Authority to service the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm, Scotland’s largest windfarm.

The new 30m x 4.4m heavy-duty pontoon will allow safe berthing and access for crew transfer vessels (CTVs) to the new operations and maintenance (O&M) base for the wind farm which is currently under construction 27km off the coast of Angus.

Located on Montrose Port’s South Quay, the new pontoon is topped with GRP decking suitable for commercial application offering excellent anti-slip properties. This, coupled with the high-level task lighting, ensures safe working conditions for workers and CTV crews all year round, day and night, during the commissioning and ongoing maintenance phases of the offshore wind farm.

Shoreside access to the new berth, and the vessels moored alongside, is via a bespoke 20m access gangway with a cantilevered shore frame platform.

“It’s been fantastic to be involved in a project which is so key to the provision of renewable energy in Scotland and the rest of the UK,” says Calum MacDougall, engineering sales manager (Scotland) at ICMS. “We worked closely with Seagreen, the Montrose Port Authority and Arch Henderson to create a bespoke, cost-effective solution, taking into account the existing infrastructure of the port.

“Our highly experienced in-house design team produced a design that moored the new pontoon to the quayside using vertical H-beams, as opposed to using driven piles, ensuring the ongoing integrity of the existing quay walls.”

Lynn Sayer, business and commercial manager at Montrose Port Authority, comments: “We’re delighted with the new 30m pontoon which will soon see operations staff and maintenance teams safely boarding crew vessels for transfer to the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm, supporting the production of enough electricity to power 1.6 million homes in Scotland.

“The decision to award the contract for this project to Inland and Coastal Marina Systems has proved a very wise investment, with the resulting facility not only being extremely well designed and engineered, but delivered on time and on budget.”
