New smart service plugs from Hydroscand

Tuesday, 1st June 2021

Hydroscand is launching specially designed marine service plugs in carefully selected materials that enable both reuse and recycling.

Service plugs are important tools for minimising the risk of environmentally harmful leakage, such as during oil changes, service, assembly, and hose changes. Leakage can also lead to high remediation costs.

To help customers reduce their environmental impact, the service plugs are made of oil-resistant TPV, a thermoplastic elastomer. Unlike rubber plugs, Hydroscand’s plugs can be recycled instead of burned.

The material also has properties that allow the plug to sit firmly in place and can be reused for a more extended period. The plug can withstand a temperature range of -40°C to +130°C.

Hydroscand’s new plug is available in many different sizes and can be used for various jobs: wherever you need to plug something that is not pressurised temporarily. They work excellently in hose breakage, for example, where you want to protect the environment but also need to ensure that as little as possible is lost from the system. They also work to plug a drain to avoid unpleasant odours.

The new service plugs are, therefore, suitable for those working in areas such as hydraulics, plumbing, workshop service, shipping, and more.

Approved Hydraulics Ltd exports to UK, Europe and the rest of the World

Thursday, 13th May 2021

Approved Hydraulics Ltd Started 34 years ago as Geoff Hindle (a man with a van). It focused on repairs and service work for the hydraulic industry. The work covered everything under the hydraulic banner but was focused more on the truck hydraulic industry (Lorry cranes, Skip Loaders, hook lifts, etc.).

Over the years, the company has changed and evolved to move into new areas. As the repair business became less and less sustainable due to a lack of engineers and longer free service contracts from equipment manufacturers, the company decided to move into more of a sales role, using the years of hands-on experience to ensure customers would receive not only the correct parts for the job but also the backup and knowledge support on how to fit and install the component correctly.

Approved Hydraulics Ltd has always been based around Manchester, initially covering the northwest of the UK area when we were a service and repair company. However, as the company transformed into sales, we now cover all of the UK and Ireland in our day-to-day sales but also, and more frequently, export items to both Europe and the rest of the world.

We cover a large range of sectors (almost any in the hydraulic industry in some way) however some stand out far more than others such as the forestry market, Rail Market, truck hydraulic market, industrial hydraulics for factories, Demolition markets and subsea and offshore sectors to name a few.

To become a market leader in any market, you need to have good-quality products, support, and knowledge behind you. We hold three main attachment UK dealerships that offer all this to the subsea market.

Intermercato AB (sold in Sweden) – Official the Sole UK agent for over 10 years, Intermercato offer the most extensive range of log grabs in the market. They are predominantly known for their strength-to-weight ratio. Many consider them in the market indestructible. There are vast amounts of these currently being used on cable and pipeline repair and replacement

Statement for MD at Intermercato—Approved Hydraulics have been our partners and sole UK agents for more than 10 years now, and we are more than pleased with the way they represent us and our products. They have a very dedicated sales team with high technical ability and a sales backup that can be trusted 100%.- Lotta Hilderbrand(MD)

Minelli SRL (Based in Italy) are a long-standing excavator grab attachment manufacturer. There grabs are well known for the their strength and have huge lift capacities compared to some on the market. They offer all their range in standard or full subsea specification.  We have supplied many polyp grabs and bucket grabs in subsea spec to many UK customers.

CMB SRL (Based in Italy) is one of approved Hydraulics’ latest ventures. With the success of early sales, Approved Hydraulics has moved to become the official UK dealer. CMB specializes in excavator grab attachments. Their range covers forestry, demolition, and material handling. The majority of these attachments are available in subsea specification upon request.

Approved Hydraulics began our own product range around 5 years ago called HYDRA – Part.  This covers a full range of standard hydraulic components, including Control valves, line-mounted valves, Pumps, PTO units, Tanks, Motors, Stabiliser pads and cages, to name a few on the ever-going range. We spent some time shopping around the world and discussing quality and price with a world of manufacturers. We signed UK sole rights on most of the range and have it all branded under out HYDRA-Part registered trade mark.  We always sold these items but with no real strong hold or price advantage to the customer. After the world when to buy online we were left with only 2 options, compete in this market or simply Bow out!.

We’ve never been the type of company to turn down a challenge, so we decided to compete. Once we found all the right parts and the right price, we started an all-singing, all-dancing buy-online website. This has been very successful, as we now sell a full range of standard hydraulic equipment to end users, dealers, and original equipment manufacturers.

The subsea market has always seemed very buoyant (pardon the pun). We have been selling to this industry for around 10 years, but sales have really increased over the past 2 years due to a large push from Approved Hydraulics. Many customers are now confident with the equipment we supply, knowing it will be perfectly fit for purpose. We can often offer a modified standard design to suit any application or need.

We also offer underwater compatible rotators as of 2021.
For the future, Approved Hydraulics is looking to develop more of its own products to increase its profile. We are also very interested in undertaking more bespoke work, as our years of knowledge and hands-on engineering give us a great advantage over many suppliers.

We are always interested in customer input on this, as this is essentially how we have developed new items over the past few years.

Rotrex Group set to significantly expand its fibre rope capability over next two years

Tuesday, 11th May 2021

The Rotrex Group, which is one of the leading winch specialists in Europe, is looking to invest heavily in its fibre rope capabilities over the next couple of years as customer demand changes.

The investment means it will grow its overall rope capacity by 40% and be able to offer an equal choice of steel or fibre rope to meet the market’s demands as it recovers following the pandemic.

Rotrex’s decision to ramp up its use of fibre ropes, which are made of HMPE fibres (highly modular polyethene), follows a large upturn in enquiries from clients across various sectors. Core benefits, which include potentially higher load strengths, better buoyancy, significant weight reduction, easier handling, and the ability to be used for both on-shore and offshore projects, are being seen as the main drivers of customer demand.

However, Rotrex Group still see a role for steel rope and is therefore committed to maintaining this option to ensure customers have a choice and that its team of experts can recommend the most appropriate material for each individual project.

Rotrex’s most recent and significant investment used Dyneema HMPE fibre ropes on its new ‘Magni’ winch. Omac manufactured it in Italy to Rotrex’s exact specifications, including state-of-the-art remote control and Wi-Fi technologies. It is now the most significant capacity trailer winch currently available in Europe and offers an additional 20-tonne pulling capacity when compared to the firm’s previous largest model. It also has more extensive rope storage facilities, allowing pulls of up to 2,400m, which is more than double that of a traditional 40-tonne winch.

Rotrex Group is working on two major windfarm projects in Taiwan using fibre ropes. The first is on four banks of six wind turbines, and the second is on eight banks of seven wind turbines. The winch with the fibre ropes will be used to pull cable from the offshore substations to land.

Don Wilkinson – European Sales Manager at the Rotrex Group – said: “As a business, we are always looking to innovate and stay ahead of our clients’ demands. Steel ropes have been the principal option for years but the technology around fibre ropes has intensified. This means more and more people are now aware of – and appreciate – the performance benefits they deliver. However, our commitment to steel ropes will remain strong so that will be able to specify the right product every time.”

First Slips, Trips & Falls Poster Designed Specifically For the Maritime Industry

Monday, 10th May 2021

Maritime Progress, a major player in the photoluminescent marine signage arena has developed a new Slips, Trips & Falls poster designed specifically for the Marine Industry.

Deborah Egan, Director commented “Slips, trips, and falls remain the main cause of incidents leading to injury for seafarers but the unique nature of the hazards and conditions Seafarers find themselves working in meant there wasn’t a safety guidance poster suitable for this unique environment, until now.”

This maritime safety poster reminds seafarers of some simple but effective rules that will keep them and their crewmates safe when working around the ship.

The poster also introduces another and often overseen hazard common to the Marine Industry, that of dropped objects. Dropped objects could be from a person working aloft or a loose item on a suspended load or crane.

The carefully illustrated poster clearly displays safety tips for the marine environment covering:

  1. Trips and falls
  2. Working aloft
  3. Maintain tidiness
  4. Avoiding slips
  5. Machinery awareness
  6. Dropped/Falling objects

The 480mm x 300mm poster is available in vinyl, rigid plastic and photoluminescent material from the Maritime Progress website:

Queens Award for International Trade for The Wight Shipyard Company

Thursday, 29th April 2021

The Wight Shipyard Company, the UK’s leading specialist manufacturer of aluminium marine craft, based in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, has been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for International Trade in recognition of its work to increase British exports.

A home-grown British marine manufacturing success story, the Wight Shipyard Company builds high-speed passenger ferries, tourist vessels and commercial workboats for the windfarm support vessel market, both domestically and internationally.

The company was formed by leading entrepreneur Sir Charles Dunstone and business partner Peter Morton in 2016 with a bold vision to restore the UK’s shipbuilding business.

Over the past three years, nearly 60% of the company’s turnover was for export market.  Furthermore, the employment opportunities created on the Isle of Wight have made the Wight Shipyard Company a thriving hub of innovation in shipbuilding and high-tech manufacturing with a highly skilled local workforce.

Speaking at about The Queen’s Award for International Trade, Peter Morton, Chief Executive of the Wight Shipyard Company stated: “We are delighted to receive this recognition. The overarching ambition was always to see a revival in British shipbuilding to compete on an international stage. To do so we understood and drove the need for efficiencies whilst nurturing a completely new generation of shipbuilders in order to produce world beating products for both the domestic and international markets.”

The domestic fast ferry market is significant in the UK. However, the Wight Shipyard Company has the capacity to produce more boats than required, so exporting and competing internationally has been vital to its development and success.

The company’s sales efforts naturally led it overseas and membership of Interferry, the shipping association representing the ferry industry globally, opened up the markets of Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, West Africa and South America. The Wight Shipyard Company also works closely with the ferry broking industry giving it a competitive advantage when tendering for projects.

To date the company’s three largest export orders have come from Austria, Mexico and Malta. An Austrian ferry operating on the Danube for Twin City Liners was delivered in 2018.  In 2019, two high speed ferries were completed ahead of schedule and were the first vessels exported from the UK to Mexico since 1980 for Ultramar, Cancun.   This was followed by the build of four high-speed ferries for the Maltese operator Captain Morgan Cruises in 2020.

Peter Morton, CEO, further commented: “Keeping a steady stream of both international and domestic orders has enabled us to grow and the Queen’s Award for International Trade is a significant recognition that will open doors around the world. It is a testament and endorsement to everyone who works at the Wight Shipyard Company and for Sir Charles, who has been a committed supporter of British shipbuilding and enterprise.”

The Wight Shipyard is one of 205 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2021. Now in its 55th year, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious business awards in the UK.
