SMM 2020: Secure And Smart

Wednesday, 4th March 2020

At the leading International Maritime Trade Fair from 8 to 11 September 2020, numerous exhibitors will showcase their security-related innovations, and international experts will discuss military defence challenges, technology developments and cyber security.

MS&D, the international conference for maritime security and defence, will provide a perfect stage for this exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Hamburg, 03 March 2020 – Specialised materials, sophisticated locating technology, efficient combat and weapons systems: naval shipbuilding is complex and requires an enormous amount of know-how. To support the domestic industry, the German federal government has raised naval surface ship building and electronic warfare to the status of a Key Technology. "We want to preserve and strengthen our domestic key industries and strategically relevant development capabilities in Germany and the EU," said Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier. SMM in Hamburg provides German, European and international naval suppliers and shipyards with an ideal opportunity to present themselves to an expert audience.

From antipiracy missions to protecting ports and sea routes, through to cyber security, SMM 2020 will provide industry visitors as well as naval and coastguard delegations with many opportunities to familiarise themselves with exhibitors’ security-related innovations, especially along the Security & Defence Route.

The 29th edition of the leading international maritime trade fair will be entirely dedicated to the current transitional phase of the maritime industry. “Our motto, ‘SMM 2020 – Driving the maritime transition’, applies to four segments: Digitalisation, Environment, Energy and Security. The Security Transition theme will explore maritime security and defence technologies. For example, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems opens up an entire range of new options to this industry," says Claus Ulrich Selbach, Business Unit Director – Maritime and Technology Fairs & Exhibitions at Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH.

SMM visitors will be able to learn at many exhibition stands and in personal conversations with subject matter experts how these technologies can be applied in specific situations.

Modernising Navies

Efficiency enhancements, higher speed, smaller crews: US President Donald Trump has approved a budget of roughly $207 billion for the expansion and modernisation of the U.S. Navy during the fiscal year 2021 alone. A portion of that sum has been earmarked for unmanned surface ship technology. The Pentagon is planning to build a total of 17 autonomous combat vessels. Having commissioned its experimental autonomous unmanned surface vehicle Sea Hunter in 2016, the US is the global pioneer in this area. The robotic vessel has two major advantages: No human lives are risked because the craft does not require a crew; and its operation is much cheaper than that of a conventional destroyer. Instead of causing operating costs of US$700,000 per day, Sea Hunter costs as little as $20,000 per mission day thanks to the use of autonomous solutions, says the US research unit DARPA. "There's broad agreement across the government that our Navy needs to grow, we need to pursue unmanned technologies, and we need to solve tough technology and policy issues associated with unmanned systems,” said Admiral Michael Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations.

The Australian Royal Navy is likewise using new technologies to reduce its operating and personnel costs. For example, a 3D printing system was put on board the frigate HMAS Parramatta during a manoeuvre to produce various spare parts. "We were able to reproduce defective parts to restore the full functionality of our equipment. That is a great success for the team," says Nathan Little, an experienced naval officer and Electronic Communications Manager at the Royal Australian Navy. 3D printing will feature prominently at SMM, as well: "We are again setting up our Maritime 3D Printing Show Area to provide an extra stage for this fascinating technology. To satisfy the enormous interest in this technology, we have doubled the exhibition space compared with 2018," says Carin Steinbach, deputy project manager for SMM.

Digital threats

As digital technology evolves and fleets are tightly interconnected by digital means, cyber threats increase, and not only for naval ships. "When it comes to cyber security, our protection is only as good as the weakest link," said Margarethe Vestager, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age at the Munich Security Conference 2020 in February. Executives in the shipping industry are well aware that fending off cyber threats is of critical importance in shipping. 83 per cent of them continue to believe that cyber security is an "important" or "very important" issue, according to the current SMM Maritime Industry Report (CLICK).

Conference dedicated to security

How can shipowners brace themselves for new threats in the digital age? From antivirus software and 24×7 protection by IT experts to effective defences against system sabotage, the International Conference on Maritime Security and Defence (MS&D) held in Hamburg on 10 and 11 September 2020 during SMM will propose practical solutions. Distinguished experts from science, defence organisations and the naval industry, and high-ranking naval representatives will be able to share views and experiences on this and other security topics.

Vice Admiral Lisa Franchetti, commander of one of the world's most powerful naval units, will explain how the 6th US fleet helps stabilise the situation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Her participation in the conference highlights the international importance MS&D has achieved. What the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) holds in stock will be examined by Carsten Stawitzki, Vice Admiral of the German Navy and Head of the Equipment Department at the German Ministry of Defence, and Dr Hans Christoph Atzpodien, Chairman of the Federation of the German Security And Defence Industry (BDSV). Other focal topics include the effects of climate change, especially on coastal regions, and shifts in the geostrategic balance of powers, for example as a consequence of China's growing dominance in Central Asia and the Asia Pacific region.

"We are excited that many high-ranking naval representatives will be attending MS&D again, including personalities like Vice Admiral Andreas Krause, the Chief of Staff of the German Navy. In his opening address at MS&D he will give an assessment of global maritime security and highlight future challenges," says Jan Wiedemann, conference chairman and editor of NAVAL FORCES. His magazine is once again the conference partner of MS&D, which will take place at the Hamburg exhibition complex on Thursday, 10 and Friday, 11 September 2020. Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet Sweden wins life extension contract for survey vessel Ocean Surveyor

Monday, 2nd March 2020

Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet in Sweden has won the public tender for a contract to undertake a major life extension programme on the survey and research vessel S/V Ocean Surveyor, owned by SGU, Sweden’s national geological survey agency.

The vessel will undergo the life-time extension over the course of 12 months. It will include the replacement of the all the machinery, bridge and auxiliary systems including HVAC and a complete overhaul of all remaining equipment.

A key aspect of the project will be the conversion of the propulsion and electrical systems from diesel to diesel electric. The overall objective of the year-long programme will be to deliver a modern, low-impact vessel with a good working environment for both the crew and the scientists working on board and better overall accessibility.

“We are happy to let Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet perform the extensive conversion of the vessel and are confident that she will be ready for another 25 years of marine surveying prior to the field season 2021. Ocean Surveyor is a key platform for many marine surveys conducted in Sweden, not only for SGU, but also for other operators hiring the vessel’s unique surveying facilities,” said Björn Bergman, operations manager at SGU.

Built 1984 in Norway, the Ocean Surveyor is a twin hull, multi-purpose, survey and ROV support vessel constructed using Kevlar / FRP composite for operations mainly in coastal waters. 38 metres long and 12 metres across she has accommodation for 15 personnel across 12 cabins and is equipped with DPS as well as various fixed hydroacoustic measuring systems. The main deck is fitted with winches, cranes, an aft frame and a moon pool for deploying samplers and underwater cameras. There are two laboratories on board; a wet lab for sediment and environmental sample analysis, and a space with a gamma spectrometer and sediment X-ray for the detailed study of samples.

“We are delighted to have won this contract,” said Flip van der Waal, managing director at Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet Sweden. “The tender process was rigorous, requiring a lot of research and pre-engineering, and now that we have been awarded the project we are responsible for the entire design scope and the procurement as laid down by the SGU. In many ways it’s not so different from a newbuild. We are very confident that our capabilities and facilities are perfectly suited to this project – including our main hall where we will carry out the work. This covered environment is the ideal location to conduct work on a composite vessel such as this. We look forward to getting started.”

The contract was signed on Friday 28 February. Work will begin on the vessel on 6 April 2020 and is scheduled for completion by 31 March 2021.

In 2020 Boat Operators can Collide or Engage with the Future

Tuesday, 25th February 2020

Devices, apps and digital are coming fast at sea. As simple and cost effective technology solutions become available for boats, the NEXT GEN Shock Mitigation Workshop brings decision makers together to highlight the burning issues today and identify viable solutions for the future.

Repetitive Shock and Whole Body Vibration (RS & WBV) has kept scientists busy in recent years. Boat operators need to understand the short and long term effects of impact and vibration on their crews and passengers. Low speed workboats deal with different forces to high speed military craft – BUT pain is pain!

Marine organisations around the world now recognise there is a need to address the implications of compliance regarding Control of Vibration at Work regulations. Borders need to be protected, navies need to launch boats from ships at sea, and on a dark and stormy night mariners need search and rescue.

July 2020 is 10 years since the EU and UK Vibration Directives came into force. Over the past decade operators have learned hard lessons about which suspension technology works and what vibration data is relevant – or not. A burning question is, Have Vibration Directives Helped Crews and Maritime Operators?

Held at the Grand Harbour hotel in the historic port of Southampton UK on 31 March 2020, the NEXT GEN Shock Mitigation Solutions Workshop focusses on sharing knowledge and practical experiences to improve safety at sea. The unique programme brings together a dynamic group of maritime professionals.

NEXT GEN gives maritime professionals the opportunity to meet other organisations with similar challenges.
Industry experts sharing knowledge and showing their latest innovations include SKYDEX Technologies – Scot Seats – KPM Marine – Dyena Offshore – Shockwave – SEAir Flying Boats (foiling systems).

Workshop Lead, John Haynes said, ‘We are running the NEXT GEN Shock Mitigation Solutions Workshop on Tuesday 31 March and a Marine RS & WBV Awareness Course back to back on Wednesday 1 April. People are welcome to attend one or both days.’

The Workshop and Training is relevant to operators of workboats, pilot boats, patrol, search & rescue, survey, wind farm support, superyacht tenders, training and charter vessels. Attendees include Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Ministry of Defence, Border Force, HM Coastguard, RNLI. International attendees include end user organisations, boat builders, equipment manufacturers and service providers.

Supporters of the event include UK Maritime Pilots, UK Harbour Masters, University of Southampton and Southampton Solent University. There is a discount rate for members of British Marine, RINA, UKMPA, UKHMA, YBDSA, PCA, SAR, military and government agencies.

Enerpac JS-125 Adds to our Heavy Lifting Services

Tuesday, 18th February 2020

Increasing the heavy-lift capacity of Collett & Sons with the addition of the Enerpac JS-125 incremental lifting system.

This multi-point lifting system features a 125 Tonne capacity per tower, synchronously lifting loads by utilising the sliding and stacking barrels to form the lifting towers.

Featuring self-contained hydraulics in each jack-up unit, the JS-125 is ideal for more restricted environments where operating space is at a premium.  By stacking the lifting barrels together to mechanically hold the load, each unit’s lifting and lowering operations occur simultaneously maintaining the balance of the load.

With a lifting height of 6-20 metres, the JS-125 is ideal for bridge construction and demolition, port crane lifting and top side lifting.  The JS-125 jack-up system provides precision control suitable for many lifting and lowering applications.  The comprehensive self-contained design features computer control for operation, automatic synchronisation of multiple networked lift points, centre of gravity calculation and up to 5% side load capacity dependent on the capacity and lift height.

The addition of the JS-125 to our already diverse heavy lift equipment provides our customers with an adaptive heavy lifting solution required to manoeuvre, position, extract and relocate a variety of cargoes, ideal for the power generation industry and oil & gas related installations.

Guardianâ„¢ helping to boost Eagle Scout ambition

Thursday, 13th February 2020

We’re always happy to hear how our products are helping to boost safety, efficiency and convenience, in an array of different industry sectors.

However, we were particularly proud to hear how the Guardian™ life ring cabinet is helping a, particularly inspirational, young-man achieve his dream of helping to protect others, whilst also working towards his long-held ambition of becoming an Eagle Scout.

What was the problem?

Boy Scout, Zachary Evans, grew increasingly concerned when he noticed that Pawleys Island seven beach access points didn’t have any lifeguards or lifesavers nearby. This became a particularly pressing issue during the peak tourism season, where the possibility of rip tides and rough currents were a very real danger.

Keen to help, and get his Eagle Scout project well underway, Zachary enlisted the help of his Dad, Raymond Evans, and began to brainstorm some ideas.

As inspirational solution…

Noting the lack of water safety equipment on the island, Evans headed straight to the Pawleys Island Police Chief with his ambitious idea – where his idea really began to gain some traction.

Last summer, Evans hosted a car wash at Pawleys Island Realty – with proceeds helping fund the plans to improve water safety equipment on the island’s beaches.

The Eagle Scout prospect also began to see lots of engagement on Twitter and Facebook, set up a Go Fund Me page – and after an awful lot of hard work and tireless dedication, was successful in his quest to raise the funds required to turn his dream into a reality.

Zachary’s project has led to the installation of 7 Guardian™ 24” life ring cabinets, each of which were prominently sited at different public beach-access locations. Pawleys Island residents, as well as visitors to the area, have been hugely positive in their feedback, and are loving the new water safety equipment now in place.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Zachary on an amazing achievement, which could have potentially life-saving consequences. And a massive thank you for letting us be a part of the journey!

If you would like any more information on our range of water safety equipment, visit https://uk.glasdon.com

Island Ropes Announce the Launch of Its New Hmpe Rope ‘Ox Fibre’

Wednesday, 12th February 2020

Discover a new approach to rope.

Island Ropes is a company with an ethos as strong as their rope, with employees holding over 50 years’ experience in the industry and strong knowledge of both the products and the market. The team at Island Ropes, including in-house splicing and rigging experts, focus on service, quality and speed; working as partners with customers, building strong, long lasting relationships.

At Island Ropes, cost control is guaranteed and unfortunately, customers going directly to the manufacturer aren’t getting the best value for money.

Through working with leading EU manufacturers and maintaining higher than normal stock levels, Island Ropes can proudly offer eight different types of break load, including Dyneema® and with a rigging department in-house, reels are easily tailored to the customer’s needs.

Managing director Steve Hayman says; “we realised that the customer was limited to one product when buying from a manufacturer.

We differ because we can offer a selection of rope to meet their needs, based on buying criteria such as diameter, break load, price and delivery, rather than being restricted to a singular product.”

Ox Fibre is a new approach to HMPE rope used for many applications such as: winching, lifting, mooring and towing. For years Dyneema® has held centre stage, providing the answer for many companies and although its quality cannot be faulted, alternative brands of HMPE fibre are just as impressive in terms of performance. With Ox Fibre, there is huge cost-saving potential of nearly 50% for a product of the same break load, ideal for the customer who enjoys high quality yet exercises cost control. Island Ropes can also offer Ox Fibre in five different grades.

Although Ox Fibre is a favourite at Island Ropes, Dyneema® is also fully stocked and available. The team at Island Ropes understand the comfort that comes with a well-known and reputable brand and for some clients, the name holds significant value when sourcing high strength ropes for industrial actions. For this reason, Island Ropes supply Dyneema® SK75, SK78 and SK99, alongside Ox Fibre.

Although Island Ropes is a fairly new company, the team is dedicated to providing the best customer service, speedy processing and delivery; offering top expertise within the industry. This all runs hand in hand with the firm belief that happy employees result in happy customers, upholding the tight-knit culture at Island Ropes.
