Motive Offshore Group Invests Six Figures to Expand Peterhead Facility and Support North Sea Growth

Motive Offshore Group (Motive), a leading provider of rental, inspection, and engineering services for the energy sector, has announced an investment of over £500,000 in its Peterhead facility. This significant investment follows Motive’s acquisition of the site in 2024 and marks a major step in enhancing its operations across the North Sea.

The purpose-built Peterhead operations hub is set to be fully refurbished by the end of 2025. The facility will serve as a central base for Motive’s expanding fleet of offshore equipment and testing services, offering clients a comprehensive end-to-end solution under one roof — from loadouts and testing to full operational support. Purchased as part of Motive’s acquisition of Aquatic, the site will streamline support for subsea projects in the North Sea, delivering faster turnaround times and reinforcing Motive’s ability to provide integrated solutions across global offshore energy markets, including oil, gas, and renewables.

Ocean Business 2025 conference programme announced

Preparations for Ocean Business 2025 are well underway, with a bigger-than-ever exhibition and a packed two-day conference programme, more details of which can now be unveiled.

The line-up of industry experts reflects the scope and ambition of the sector as it gathers together for the global marine technology and science show, to be held at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton from April 8-10

Keynote Speakers Day 1

Keynote speakers on day one of the conference, which will take place on Tuesday, April 8, include John Siddorn, NOC chief executive, who will examine the centre’s role in industry engagement; Andy Liddell of Defence Equipment and Support, who will explore the future of autonomous systems in the Royal Navy; and Commander Mark Butcher, who will represent Navy Develop and its many technical collaborations.

At the end of the morning session, the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) will present its coveted Business Person of the Year Award.

After lunch, Becky Conway, CEO of the Hydrographic Society UK & Ireland, will lead a discussion on Future Skills for the Next Generation of Ocean Technology, along with Fugro Academy’s Mike Redmayne, while Chris White of the Australian Maritime College will offer an Antipodean perspective on training in autonomous maritime systems.

Following an early careers platform for student hydrographers, two pan-sector panels, both mediated by Conference Chair Sue John, will look at Space and the Marine Environment, with the NOC’s Paul Bell investigating the Remote Sensing Revolution, plus presentations from the European Space Agency, the Space South Central Enterprise Network, and Surrey Satellite Technology.

The Future of our Ocean Day 2

The Future of our Ocean is the overall theme of day two, on Wednesday, April 9. Chaired by BP’s Mark Poole and with a roll-call of international innovators, from RS Aqua’s Ryan Mowat to Neil Manning of Cellular Robotics Canada and Adam Hamilton of MMA Offshore, Australia, the event addressed everything from intelligent underwater acoustics to long-endurance AUVs and the challenges of renewable energy surveys.

Also not to be missed, in the second session on this theme, chaired by Trish Buxton of Thurn Group, are talks by Port of London hydrographer John Dillon-Leetch, on meeting the needs of the UK’s number one port; Andrijana Horvat from Hidrocibalae Croatia with an update on AI’s role in security challenges; Adam Parnell, of safety at sea charity CHIRP, focusing on incident reporting and saving lives; and Sam Taylor, of Ocean Infinity, charting the course of the Armada fleet of unmanned surface robots.

Continuing the Future of our Ocean theme, David Parker and Rob Clarke of the UK Centre for Seabed Mapping and UK Hydrographic Office will be joined by Nicola Robinson of ORE Catapult, the UK technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy, and Ryan Mowat, SMI’s Marine Science and Technology Council Director.

All will then reconvene for the final panel session of the day, chaired by Mike King of Sulmara Subsea, to consider how developments in the ocean science community are disrupting the status quo.

Diverse Marine’s Finance & Lease Programme Delivers Two CTVs, with Five More in Build

Since launching its Finance & Lease Programme in November 2023, Diverse Marine has successfully delivered two crew transfer vessels (CTVs), with three more currently in build for delivery this year and two further shortly thereafter of the first batch. The programme continues to operate as a rolling initiative, providing new-build CTVs based on customer demand.

The first vessel completed under the programme was NR Alpha, which was unveiled at Seawork last year. This Storm Class crew transfer vessel has set new benchmarks for fuel efficiency and performance, leading NR Marine Services to order a third vessel—NR Rival, the first of the new Typhoon Class CTVs.

NR Rival was delivered in January 2025. The Typhoon Class features a hull form designed for exceptional head-sea performance and tower access while maintaining high buoyancy reserves for superior seakeeping in following and stern-quarter seas. It also comes with Zero Emissions (Power Management) class notation, recognising its efficiency in reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Further CTV’s in Build

Stock Build 3, a first Brevity Class CTV is undergoing sea trials with the vessel available for quick delivery following rebrand to suit prospective clients requirements.

Stock Build 4, to be named NR Rebellion, a second Typhoon Class CTV, is now in its final build phase, with the wheelhouse and saloon fitted earlier this month. Again ordered by NR Marine Services, she is scheduled for launch and sea trials in March.

Meanwhile, Stock Build 5, to be named NR Hunter, a third Storm Class CTV, is currently under construction at Diverse Marine’s facility in Cowes and will be launched at Seawork in June. Stock Build 6, an Ambitious Class CTV is also currently under construction and will be delivered to OEG, whilst Stock Build 7, a further Brevity Class CTV, will follow in Q3/Q4 of this year.

Inland and Coastal Marina Systems Awarded ISO 14001

Inland and Coastal Marina Systems is thrilled to announce it has been officially awarded with ISO 14001 certification, an internationally recognised standard for organisations that meet the strict requirements for their Environmental Management Systems (EMS).

After deciding to go through the internal processes and works necessary for compliance in early 2024, Inland and Coastal’s team at its Banagher headquarters in Ireland worked tirelessly to achieve certification within a year, highlighting the effectiveness of its Management System already in place.

ISO 14001

The ISO 14001 standard provides a framework for organisations to design and implement an effective EMS and continually improve their environmental performance, taking proactive measures to minimise their environmental impact, comply with legal requirements and achieve their environmental objectives.

The framework encompasses various aspects, from resource usage and waste management to monitoring environmental performance and involving stakeholders in environmental commitments.

Major Achievement

This addition to the ISO certifications represents a major achievement for the company in its accreditations. Inland and Coastal has been certified for its Quality Management (ISO 9001) since 2014 and for its Health & Safety (ISO 45001) since 2019, spearheaded by Shannon McDermott, Inland and Coastal’s Quality and Health and Safety Manager, whose knowledge, dedication and support has proved invaluable throughout.

The latest achievement on being awarded the ISO 14001 completes the company’s enduring commitment to quality, environmental management and occupational Health & Safety.

Regarding recent improvements and changes implemented by the business, Floriane Catillon, Sustainability Manager at Inland and Coastal, comments: “The ISO 14001 didn’t require us to make tremendous changes as many of our current practices already align with international standards. That said, any Management System comes with its challenges and the biggest one, I believe, is to get everyone engaged, which requires every department to be involved.

“When it comes to health and safety, it literally implicates everyone, and most of the time can be associated with serious injuries if not applied. When it involves the environment, sadly, it is up to everyone’s beliefs, and I think it is the biggest hurdle for many businesses. The biggest challenge, and one which remains an ongoing journey, is engaging people and encouraging their commitment to the sustainability cause and certification.”

After working alongside consultant firm Antaris, which helped guide the team through the process, Inland and Coastal was ready to take the next step and engage certification body SGS, which assigned an auditor to ensure the company was meeting all the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard.

New Practices

As a result, Inland and Coastal has now successfully implemented a wealth of practices to improve its environmental impact. These include a more efficient method of segregating waste, greater awareness of hazardous substances and associated risks, and innovative methods for reducing and reusing the water system in its production facility.

It has also created a biodiversity-friendly garden space encouraging pollinator species to flourish by the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan (AIPP) and recently installed Photovoltaic solar panels and EV charging points at the site.

“This accomplishment is the result of the dedication and hard work done over the last year,” adds Catillon. “It demonstrates that our processes are aligned with internationally recognised best practices for managing environmental impacts, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. This achievement is a significant milestone for us, and it highlights the continuous efforts of every team member to integrate environmental practices into our daily tasks.”

Walcon Marine Delivers Access Pontoon to the Falkland Islands

Walcon Marine has designed, built and despatched a bespoke bridge and pontoon to the harbour authority of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. Its primary purpose is to be the point of entry and exit for the 80,000 plus tourists who arrive at Port Stanley between October and March each year on board cruise ships.

The harbour authorities had been discussing replacing the previous floating jetty for some time. Both the structure, originally built for domestic use, and its location were inadequate, with the largest cruise ships capable of bringing up to 4,000 visitors. Long queues of passengers waiting in the open air to embark and disembark were becoming increasingly common.

Project planning

Project planning for a new access bridge plus pontoons got underway in 2022 and, once Walcon Marine was on board, the design brief was agreed; to create a safe and stable facility that would be long enough to accommodate four tenders (two on each side), each 10 to 14 metres in length and capable of carrying up to 100 passengers. It also had to be safe and efficient; able to move passengers between the tenders and the shore as rapidly as possible. The requirement was the supply of commercial-grade pontoons with non-slip decking and Kee-Klamp handrails, with many of the visitors being of retirement age.

Huge improvement in safety

“The new finger pontoon installation adjacent to the public jetty has been a huge improvement for the safety of its users,” says Steuart Barlow, Harbour Master, Falkland Islands Maritime Authority (FIMA). I have personally been on the pontoon during choppy seas and the stability of the pontoon has been proven to be very stable with minimal movement. The addition of a central handrail is an added safety measure which provides users greater confidence when using the pontoon. I have spoken with cruise ship exhibition staff who have been coming to the Falklands for many years and they have had positive feedback on the new pontoon.

“From a Falkland Islands Maritime Authority (FIMA) perspective, these pontoon systems has been used more than once to extract casualties from ships/harbour launches. The widened gangway provides stretcher bearers easy access when transferring patients in stretches to the waiting ambulance in the car park. For single ship tendering operations, it provides the tender coxswain an option to use either the East or West side of the pontoon during times of challenging weather. FIMA and other marine users are very happy with this new installation.”

Fabricated at Walcon Marine’s factory in Hampshire, UK

The new equipment was fabricated at Walcon Marine’s factory in Hampshire, UK, and the units loaded at Southampton. The voyage took 30 days, arriving in Port Stanley after an 8,400 nm journey! The installation was completed by a local contractor in September 2024, in time for the start of what has turned out to be a very busy cruise season.

Ocean Business Launches Cutting-Edge Technology Training

With Ocean Business 2025 less than three months away, details can now be revealed about the Training and Demonstration programme, one of the main attractions of the global technology and science exhibition for marine industries.

The three-day show, which runs from April 8-10 at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, is open to all visitors for free by registering online at www.oceanbusiness.com.

This year’s Training and Demonstration programme, featuring the most exciting developments in the ocean sector, is bigger than ever, with 180-plus hours of new technologies demonstrated in the dockside waters, onboard vessels and in the classroom.

Cutting Edge Sensor Technology

Pipeline Upgrade in the Environmentally Sensitive Severn Estuary

A critical infrastructure upgrade was recently completed in the Severn Estuary as the long sea outfall pipeline—originally constructed in 1960 near Nash, Newport—was replaced to extend its operational life.

Appointed as Principal Designer & Principal Contractor, Kaymac Marine & Civil Engineering Ltd led the £8.4 million project, which involved installing a 1.4km 560mmØ high-density polyethene (HDPE) outfall pipe to replace the deteriorated concrete-coated steel pipe.

Situated within one of the UK’s most ecologically sensitive regions and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the Severn Estuary, the project not only secured infrastructure integrity but also adhered to stringent environmental protection measures.

Project Challenges and Environmental Safeguards

The Severn Estuary is renowned for its tidal range of 12–14 meters—the second largest in the world—and as such poses significant challenges for civil and marine works. In addition, due to the estuary’s designation as a SSSI, which protects its tidal flats, salt marshes, and diverse wildlife, the project team introduced and adhered to comprehensive environmental safeguards.  Sediment control measures such as careful selection of plant and equipment, implemented in collaboration with NRW, minimised water quality impacts during the excavation and pipe-laying activities.

Kaymac Marine drew upon its deep industry expertise and practical experience to drive the design direction and successfully secure all necessary permits and permissions for the project. Working closely with the local Council and Natural Resources Wales (NRW), Kaymac led the process of obtaining the required Marine License, Environmental Permits, and Planning Permissions, ensuring full compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Through comprehensive site investigations and advanced geophysical and bathymetric surveys, Kaymac identified critical site-specific characteristics that directly influenced the project’s design. This informed approach allowed the team to craft tailored solutions that addressed regulatory concerns while optimising project outcomes.

Kaymac’s practical experience played a crucial role in addressing the expectations of the environmental regulators. By proactively collaborating with NRW and other stakeholders, the team was able to satisfy stringent environmental requirements, demonstrating how the proposed designs minimised ecological impacts while maintaining structural and operational integrity.

This expertise and experience, coupled with a solutions-focused mindset, not only streamlined the approval process but also ensured that the final design adhered to both regulatory standards and the project’s overarching goals.

To maintain quality standards and to ensure the work could be undertaken within the licencing timeframes, Kaymac engaged suppliers early on, securing essential equipment and materials whilst conducting regular necessary quality visits and inspections to ensure technical and quality compliance.

Detailed Design & Planning

A comprehensive understanding of the physical forces that dominate the ocean environment, their origins, and the likelihood and intensity of these forces over the lifespan of an outfall is critical to its effective design, regardless of the construction materials used. These forces can compromise the outfall’s integrity either directly or indirectly, such as through seabed erosion or by destabilising its foundation. Additionally, sediment transport can obstruct diffuser orifices, potentially leading to system failure. These factors were considered and mitigated during the planning and design phases to ensure the long-term functionality for this particular environment.

Kaymac appointed Pebble Engineering Ltd as Designers and worked collaboratively to develop the construction methods and, subsequently, the detailed design of the outfall.  Both the construction method and the detailed design needed to align and complement each other with regard to compliance with the aforementioned environmental and planning regulations, the seabed conditions present on site and the anticipated physical conditions (such as sea, wind, wave, tidal and current) of the location of the work.

Delivery and Preparation of HDPE Pipe

The new HDPE outfall, measuring 1.4km in length and 560mm in diameter, was manufactured by Pipelife Norge AS in Norway and towed 1,134 nautical miles to Newport in 11 sections under a single trip. Upon arrival at ABP Newport Docks, each pipe section was stringently inspected, tested, and later prepared for installation.

The preparation works involved the installation of over 260 nr bespoke pre-cast concrete ballast collars that were designed to ensure the stability of the pipeline against the hydrodynamic forces of the watercourse and the natural buoyancy of the HDPE material once it had been sunk to its installed position within the trench.

Innovative Installation Techniques in a Tidal Environment

Specialised low-pressure bearing amphibious excavators handled intertidal trenching at low tide, while a GPS-equipped dredging vessel undertook the offshore trenching requirements. The installation spanned an approximately 28-day period, working shift patterns under challenging tidal conditions, with trenches reaching depths of approximately 1.5–2 meters.

A key milestone involved towing the first 250-meter section of the pipe from ABP Newport, navigating the currents and flows of the Severn Estuary, to the installation site, approximately 3 nautical miles away. This segment, equipped with 50 concrete collars, was positioned over the trench as the tide receded and sunk under the guidance of Kaymac’s divers to ensure accuracy before being backfilled with the previously excavated spoil.

Finally, the pre-cast articulated concrete mattresses were installed by utilising a crane barge to provide additional scour protection and stability to the outfall.  Such mattresses have been used successfully for decades to protect oil and gas pipelines and since the early 1990’s, they have been increasingly used to protect ocean outfalls.

Throughout the project, Kaymac employed a ‘flotation and submersion’ technique whereby each 250-meter long section was towed into position, and the seaward end of the previously installed pipe length was recovered to the working platform before connecting to the new length and then sinking within the new pre-excavated trench.

Ensuring an accurate and safe sinking procedure in the Severn Estuary required considerable planning efforts from the delivery team, taking into consideration tidal movements and slack water periods.  Each sinking activity was planned meticulously to ensure that a constant submersion rate could be implemented, assisted by a number of key specialist vessels being present to position and secure the pipe section in place whilst the slack water period approached.

Slack water periods in this location are relatively short and as such, the rate of pipe submersion needed to be planned and controlled by adjusting both the water inflow and air release rates.  To avoid a bending radius that could become smaller than its allowable minimum and further, to prevent the pipe wall buckling, the rates needed to be carefully monitored and controlled, all whilst considering the load imposed by the ballast weights, the varying tidal water depth and the pulling forces applied to the outfall by the marine plant.

The pipe installation continued in four separate sections, totalling 1.47km, with a diffuser head separately installed through diving operations at the seaward end. A backhoe dredger was used to place the previously excavated material on to the pipe.  Following the backfilling, approximately 210 nr. of the pre-cast articulated concrete mattresses in total, each weighing 8.3t in air, were laid over the installed lengths of pipe from the crane barge.  The backfilling and mattress installation were monitored and supervised by Kaymac’s dive teams, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of both activities throughout the scheme.

Civil Operations, Plant Isolations and Final Connection

To prevent disruption to the client during their day-to-day operations, the marine activities to install the replacement outfall were carried out alongside the existing operational outfall.  Simultaneously, inland operations were undertaken by Kaymac’s skilled civils teams, who installed a temporary sheet piled cofferdam to excavate and expose the existing valve and land-based outfall arrangement.

Two short operational isolations were required: the first to replace the existing land-based valve and connecting pipes, and the second to connect the new replacement outfall to the existing infrastructure.  Again, these isolations were planned precisely around suitable tidal windows to maximise working efficiency and to minimise interruption to the plant operations.

During the first isolation, the existing land-based single non-return valve was replaced with new valves and a T-piece arrangement system that would permit future inspection and maintenance requirements.  Once the land-based replacement and connection works were complete, the replacement valve arrangement was housed within a newly constructed reinforced concrete chamber built alongside the plant’s normal operations.  The chamber was designed to permit safe future access around the valve arrangement and to retain a section of the existing flood defence embankment.

The second isolation took place while the land-based civil works were underway to construct the new chamber. Working at low tidal periods, a bespoke HDPE pipe section was fabricated that considered both the vertical and horizontal changes in direction to align with the newly installed outfall.  This section was installed to connect the newly installed outfall to the existing pipeline ahead of removing the isolation.
