ABP invests around £9 million in state-of-the-art pilot boat fleet

Associated British Ports (ABP) the UK’s largest and best-connected port operator, has commissioned a fleet of nine new state-of-the art pilot boats from Goodchild Marine Services, representing an investment of around £9 million to further enhance port operations across its network.

The faster and more fuel-efficient vessels will be constructed by the Norfolk-based boat builder and will be delivered over the course of the next five years.

Construction of the first vessel has already begun and it is expected to be delivered to ABP’s Humber region in 2021. In total, ABP has commissioned five vessels to serve its Humber ports, three for Southampton and one for Barry in South Wales.

Mike McCartain, ABP’s Group Director for Safety Marine and Engineering, said: “It is fantastic that we have been able to award this significant contract to a UK manufacturer who is at the leading edge of Pilot boat technology.

This will also help support existing local jobs and the regional economy which is great news given the current economic conditions.

“The state-of-the-art vessels will improve the efficiency of port operations and will ensure that we can continue to service our customers’ needs to a very high standard.”

ABP and Goodchild Marine Services have had a long history of productive collaboration. In July 2019, Goodchild Marine delivered its second pilot boat to ABP, the ‘Kingfisher’, which has been supporting operations at the Port of Lowestoft. This followed the delivery of their first pilot boat for ABP, the ‘Osprey’, more than 25 years ago.

Abu Dhabi, UAE – 3 November, 2020: The Abu Dhabi International Petroleum and Exhibition Conference (ADIPEC) 2020 Virtual Conference, the world’s largest gathering of oil and gas industry players, is set to begin on Monday, November 9, 2020.

Taylor Hobson alignment products help shipbuilding industry meet their green credentials

Shipbuilders around the world are currently facing the challenge of reducing their environmental impact. Accurate alignment of engines, propeller shafting and stern tubes all reduces vibration and wear, which cause fuel inefficiencies, so the Taylor Hobson alignment telescope is an invaluable tool to shipbuilders and marine engineers across the globe.

Shipbuilders and marine engineers have used the Taylor Hobson Micro Alignment Telescope range for applications such as the alignment of propulsion machinery since the late 1930s. These Alignment Telescopes (used for checking and setting straightness and alignment) are typically used to precisely align the position of the ships engine in relation to the propeller shafting and stern tube. Other tasks include alignment of the engine to the stern tube and alignment of rudder bearings. Every percentage of fuel efficiency achieved by reducing these misalignments saves around 1500 gallons of fuel – over the lifetime of a ship this can equate to millions of dollars in savings.

In recent years the capabilities of the Telescopes have been enhanced with the use of new camera technology for remote viewing when working in difficult locations and over very long distances and computerised measurements. Equally, the Micro Alignment Telescope has the advantage of being capable of running entirely without power if circumstances so dictate.

Large diesels used in marine engines are prone to twisting and deformation during periods of extended service. Before remachining the main bearings, the alignment telescope is used to quickly and accurately assess the amount of deformation in the engine bores and determine the precise amount of metal removal. First the engine bores are measured – any misalignment can be viewed by the operator through the camera system which is attached to the Micro Alignment Telescope eyepiece. Once all the bore centres are in line and with the telescope in place, the boring machine tool is moved along the same line for machining, skimming any bores to the correct size.

The Alignment Telescope is sold around the world through Taylor Hobson’s worldwide network – the equipment is also available on hire from their technical support agent, Spectrum Metrology, for individual jobs during refurbishment projects.

George Gair joined the business in early September and, since starting, has already met with many key clients to gain insight into their inspection needs and discuss specific project requirements in detail. George is committed to supporting the industry and sits on several industry committees focusing on competence and training; he is also a regular speaker at both national and international conferences, including IMCA, IOGP and OTC.

ScanjetPSM launches Unique Digital Sextant

An Essential New Navigational Backup for Every Offshore Vessel

ScanjetPSM is poised to launch a new development which provides essential back-up in the event of failure or malicious adjustment of the GPS system. The first ever Digital Sextant provides a simple to use solution that requires no specialist training and is capable of delivering pinpoint accuracy within just one second of sighting without the need for additional charts or tools.

The Digital Sextant enables fast, accurate identification of position with longitude and latitude readings (no training is required), minimising the opportunity for operator error and providing and recording the location within seconds. Once readings have been taken, the position is immediately displayed. If the vessel is moving, the heading and speed can be entered. With no manual calculations required, the attendant risk of errors is removed.

The Digital Sextant provides the ultimate backup, in the event of failure or ‘adjustment’ of the GPS system.  Whilst it is electronic, it is stand-alone and not reliant on any other external sources or systems.

The new Digital Sextant has been developed as an alternative to traditional manual sextants, providing a simple alternative which uses the latest computerised technology to eliminate the need for complex calculations and additional equipment.  The embedded design incorporates a built-in chronometer, with access to the astronomical details of 67 celestial bodies (the sun, moon, stars, planets etc).

Powerful algorithms offer automatic position analysis and global position calculation with easy self-zeroing calibration. Eliminating the need for specialist training, the new Digital Sextant displays accurate positioning data within one second following sighting, compared to the more usual 20-30 minutes.

The new Digital Sextant offers significantly improved accuracy at distances less than one kilometre, with traditional sextants by comparison, typically delivering accuracy from 18.5 kilometers outwards. Error measurements in altitude have been halved from 250mm / 10 inches to just 125mm / 5 inches.

Between uses, the Digital Sextant, which is CE and FCC certified, can be stored for protection in an optional robust case that provides complete EMP shielding. As with all ScanjetPSM products, the new Digital Sextant is supported by 24-hour worldwide support through the Scanjet network.

PSM Supply Complete Tank Instrumentation Package for Spanish FPSO Vessel

PSM Instrumentation continue to deliver global projects during the COVID-19 pandemic. Working closely with their Spanish Agents, Aries Industrial Y Naval Servicios, they have recently delivered a complete instrumentation package for the vessel ‘Blue Eagle’, a newbuild Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) which is under construction in Spain.

The completed vessel will measure 106 metres long, 25 metres wide and 12 metres deep, and have a capacity of 7,300 cubic metres of crude oil and be capable of treating 20,000 barrels per day.

As part of Scanjet, PSM are able to offer a full range of intelligent maritime tank instrumentation and so for the cargo tanks they supplied Scanrad level transmitters, Multi-point averaging temperature transmitters, Inert gas pressure transmitters and High/Overfill alarm switches.

PSM also delivered PSM APT1000 Series transmitters for all ballast and service tanks. Zener Safety barrier panels were included for all instrument signals.

Representatives from Scanjet PSM will be onboard the vessel to commission the instrumentation, with the delivery of the completed vessel scheduled for 2021.
