Blade Runner Two

Harnessing energy from the wind provides a renewable source of low-carbon energy, cleaner and more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels. But developing the tools to harness that energy requires innovation and investment, not only from energy companies but from right across the supply chain.

Bespoke blade barge

Offshore wind turbine blades present a unique transport challenge. At 80 metres long, the blades manufactured by Vestas on the Isle of Wight cannot be transported by normal vessels, so Williams Shipping operates a purpose-built blade transport barge for the business.

BLADE RUNNER TWO (‘BR2’) is a 75 metre shallow water barge designed to meet the precise demands of both cargo and delivery route. Vestas state-of-the-art factory near Newport is on the River Medina, on the site of the old cement mills, so BR2 has a ‘Medina Bow’ engineered to suit this berth. A ‘Solent Bow’ provides versatility for the rest of the journey.

Dedicated and experienced crew

Williams Shipping provides a round-the-clock service for turbine blade deliveries. BR2 is crewed by a local team of 16 on four shifts.

Each team of four is multi-skilled. The crew provides Ship’s Captain, Mate and two deck hands at sea, and at the quayside they become the blade lifting team. The cumbersome blades are loaded with Williams Shipping’s crawler cranes by two crane drivers and two slinger/signalers who supervise the lifting operation to load and unload cargo.

Transport to Fawley and Portsmouth Docks

Blade Runner Two operates day and night, collecting wind turbine blades from the Isle of Wight and shipping them to the Vestas facility on the mainland. Here the blades are painted and finished before being delivered by BR2 to a Load Out port (Southampton or Portsmouth) ready to be shipped to projects around the UK and Europe.

In a neat evolutionary twist, this new Vestas finishing facility is at Fawley Waterside, site of the old oil-powered Power Station and iconic chimney, a navigational landmark due for demolition this year.

Renewable energy facilities for the UK

Since the Government announced the Offshore Wind Sector Deal in 2019 the wind energy sector has benefited from its vision for offshore wind to become the backbone of the UK’s power system, with capacity set to treble to at least 30GW by 2030 – providing over a third of our annual power needs.

Vestas has continued to invest in its wind turbine facilities on the Isle of Wight and at Fawley, and most of the blades transported by Williams Shipping on BLADE RUNNER TWO supply offshore wind facilities around the UK. The rest are exported to wind farms off the coast of northern Europe.

Clarksons Port Services Unveils Aberdeen Quayside Premises Reduces Carbon Footprint

Aberdeen-based Clarksons Port Services (CPS) has underlined ongoing commercial success and a commitment to its sustainability strategy with a move into new, larger premises at Aberdeen Harbour’s Matthew’s Quay.

Based on Matthew’s Quay peninsula, the new location will see CPS – a division of Clarksons, the world’s leading provider of integrated shipping and offshore services – become one of only a small number of shipping agencies located within the Harbour boundaries. A wide range of onsite plant and machinery, along with access to a heavy lift pad, 1,600m2 outdoor storage space and 2,000m2 of customs bonded warehouse, will be available at the new location. The ability to mobilise and operate cranes, plant and labour will allow for large-scale mobilisation and de-mobilisations to take place on the agency’s doorstep.

The move follows a busy 2020 for CPS, which has seen it complete a number of large projects on behalf of major North Sea EPCI contractors, whilst continuing to service its bulk cargo customers, keeping the UK stocked with animal and human feedstuffs and bulk material.

Marine services provider Williams Shipping welcomes new Multicat Willchallenge as the latest addition to the fleet.

Williams Shipping is delighted to welcome another Eurocarrier 2209 to the fleet. Our crew joined the vessel at Neptune Marine’s yard in Aalst, The Netherlands and sailed to Southampton in February.

Willchallenge is a marine barge and the latest version of a Eurocarrier 2209 built by Neptune. Her specification includes all Caterpillar machinery, an HS Marine 185 tonnes /m hydraulic crane, a 50 tonnes anchor handling and towing winch and hydraulic anchor handling pins.

The accommodation is fitted out to a very high standard including fully airconditioned cabins for four crew. She joins Willendeavour our other Eurocarrier 2209 and our fleet of Damen Stantugs and Meercat workboats.

Why flexibility is the key to effective spill containment

It’s fair to say that oil and water have a complicated relationship. While they famously don’t mix, it’s also true that when there are no intervention spill containment measures in place, oil will usually find a way to reach water.

When it does, it’s incredibly problematic from an environmental perspective. Whether as the result of an accidental spill or deliberate, malicious activity, oil entering waterways and filtering through to the watercourse causes widespread damage. Just one litre of oil – a relatively small amount – has the potential to contaminate as much as 1 million litres of water.

The wildfowl, mammals, fish and plants in the immediate area are the obvious casualties of these avoidable scenarios, but there is a human impact too: water sources may no longer be suitable for irrigation purposes while oil-related complications in the treatment process may lead to water becoming unfit to drink.

Spill containment is, therefore, a crucial consideration for any site holding oil. Under the 2001 oil storage regulations in England, with similar rules applying in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – there is clear guidance for oil to be secured within secondary containment with a capacity that is equal to, or more than, 10% of the oil being held for fixed tanks, mobile bowsers, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) and other single containers, and 25% for drums. Anyone found to be non-compliant risks a minimum of a four-figure fine.

In our view, adherence to environmental requirements should be a cultural, conscious and consideration decision rather than a box-ticking exercise for fear of retribution. For oil spill containment to be truly effective, it must be factored into a broader view of pollution prevention, and even a Business Continuity Plan. One that fits with the realities of day-to-day life in fast-moving businesses that are increasingly under pressure to adapt to changing market demands.

Thought needs to be given, for example, to the volume of liquids kept on site. This can fluctuate according to external market triggers, but it remains essential that a proportionate level of spill containment measures are in place. At Darcy, we have recently seen clients extend the amount of bulk liquids they hold, either to protect themselves against potential distribution issues caused by Brexit or to meet heightened demand for certain products triggered by the pandemic. With the appropriate flexibility built into their spill containment set-up, these changing levels can be safely and agilely accommodated without disruption to the business or significant additional expense.

Indeed, there are a variety of spill trays and sump pallets designed to fulfil the requirements for secondary containment, with Darcy Group’s British-made range of products capable of managing volumes from 20 litres up to 1,100 litres in a wide variety of different oil storage situations.

Movement is a key factor to consider. It is not uncommon for oil storage containers to be moved into new positions on site, whether on a temporary or permanent basis. This scenario requires flexible spill-containment options to be in place to provide continued compliance with oil storage regulations and prevent contaminants from causing environmental harm.

Darcy’s Trident Drive-in Tribund, for example, is a ‘pop-up’ bunding system that is suitable for securing vehicles such as forklifts that are loading and unloading liquids. Extremely portable, it is simply unrolled into place without the requirement for additional supports.

Transportation and movement of tanks or bowsers might present an obvious spill-risk and so can be planned for, but less predictable situations can demand a swift response. Facilities managers can ensure they are fully prepared for such an event by equipping themselves with flexible spill containment options, such as bundstrips. Made of crush-resistant foam and covered with a highly visible yellow PVC outer cover, these durable, cost-effective products can be deployed quickly, allowing for waste liquids to be contained and then removed and disposed of at a later point using products and services that are relevant to the liquid in question.

In summary, spills are not a simple risk to manage – they are unpredictable in their timing and scale, and they typically require a range of products and approaches when they occur. Investing in secondary containment may provide essential compliance with oil storage regulations, but it is only by adopting a more comprehensive approach to spill management that site owners will have the flexibility to fully protect themselves – and their local environment – from the potential damage that occurs when oil and water mix.

Glad to be raising awareness through social media

Some industries are essential and commonplace yet despite existing in plain sight there is little or no perception of them among the wider world. The Lifting Sector is a good example. Fortunately its key stakeholders have resolved to change this. They are now shouting out from the rooftops, or rather from their laptops on social media, about their pride in their industry and how vital something as ubiquitous as lifting is to everyday lives.

“Lifting is a key role in the supply chains of many industries. Wherever goods, products, materials or people are moved, lifting equipment is involved,” points out Ross Moloney, CEO of leading industry trade association, LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association). “With lifting there is an inherent on-going battle between mankind and gravity. As we reach higher and further, the challenges become ever greater, involving more complexity and danger. By highlighting the importance of high standards, safe practices and technological innovation we can showcase to end users how important safe lifting is in their own sectors.” 

Moloney recalls how a chat about this issue one day in a hotel lobby with two other Lifting Industry stakeholders – LHI magazine’s Guy Harris and Mark Bridger of lifting sector media company Bridger Howes – sparked the idea behind a day dedicated to celebrating the lifting and working at height sector, particularly on social media. And so, Global Lifting Awareness Day – or GLAD, as it is appropriately known – was born. 

Outlining the objectives behind GLAD, Moloney says: “The Lifting Industry wants to attract the next generation of recruits into this incredible sector. But it is also crucial that we remind end users of how important it is to use high quality suppliers who utilise years of experience and high-quality training, and who routinely develop innovative and thoughtful solutions. Through GLAD we can highlight to policymakers that we need them to recognise and support the role we play in improving health and safety across numerous key industries. Finally, GLAD is a great chance for us all to celebrate the incredible role our industry has performed and continues to play.”

The inaugural annual Global Lifting Awareness Day took place on 9th July 2020. “GLAD was conceived before the pandemic, but the Covid crisis gave the day an extra impetus to boost the sector and it was a tremendous success,” says Moloney. People took to social media in their droves to post messages proclaiming what makes them glad to be in the industry. Across the platforms such as of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram there were almost 1000 individual and original mentions of #GLAD2020. Not bad for a first go.

There are even greater expectations for this year’s GLAD. Taking place on 8th July 2021, companies and individuals will again be able to highlight what they do and the importance of skills, competence and innovation. With vaccine rollouts well under way, there’s sure to be a mood of optimism among the messages.

“We encourage everyone with an interest in the Lifting Industry to support GLAD2021,” says Moloney. “We hope that on 8th July, social media channels such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook will be filled with content from across the sector. We encourage trade journals to also consider supporting the effort in their publication schedules. There are many pieces of content that can be used or amended, such as the ‘LEEA Think Lifting’ films, which can be downloaded at leeaint.com. But we hope to see new and original posts too, which might include written pieces, films, podcasts or interviews –anything that spreads the message.”

Moloney concludes: “This isn’t about any single company or organisation – it is an industry day. Posting messages using the GLAD logo – which is also available to download at leeaint.com – together with hash-tagging GLAD2021 will help to raise our collective voices and drive greater awareness of our vital sector.”

Mary Rose Would be all at Sea Without Hanwells Monitoring Technology

Hanwell Solutions Ltd has helped preserve one of the most famous tourist attractions in the UK by developing a temperature and humidity monitoring solution to ensure the correct environmental conditions are constantly maintained for the site.

Mary Rose, the 16th century warship sunk in the Solent in 1545, is now a museum after a 34-year conservation project during which Hanwell’s technology and environmental monitoring sensors played a key role, continuously checking and recording temperature and humidity of the ship during the drying out process to minimise distortion and the cracking of wood due to environmental fluctuations.

To this day Hanwell’s Pro technology continues to play a crucial role in protecting the historic vessel, recovered from the sea bed in 1982 and brought back to life for 21st Century visitors, as the Mary Rose Trust’s Head of Conservation and Collections Care, Eleanor Schofield, explained.

Eleanor said: “The Hanwell monitoring system was easy to set up to give us all the data we need.  We link it to alarms, which are set so that if one sensor reports an environmental factor has become out of tolerance we can react quickly. The system enables us to get the problem sorted quickly, as well as helping us with routine maintenance.”

Because of the unique nature of the Mary Rose, Hanwell had to design a customised solution for the conservation team. The system has been a key indicator in monitoring the drying of the timbers – if something had gone wrong it would have affected the whole ship.

Over 30 sensors from the Hanwell Pro range are on the hull of the ship, continuously mapping the condition of the wood. The Hanwell system not only monitors the ship’s hull, but the vital data is also fed to the BMS system via MODBUS, data from the wireless sensors also control the separate air handling units for the collection of artefacts through a Hanwell custom built MS1000 control panel.  Between the two control systems the critical environmental conditions are maintained between 18-20°C and 50-58% RH.

Eleanor concluded: “We continue to experience a good working relationship with Hanwell Solutions and support whenever needed. Our need to monitor and control the stability of the environment of course continues, measuring and reacting to how changes in weather, visitor traffic and so on affect the ship, so our Hanwell system will continue to be crucially important to the Mary Rose.”

Six-figure investment strengthens First Marine Solutions survey and positioning service

Rhenus takes over BLG freight forwarding sites and opens up new markets

The BLG Logistics Group has made a strategic decision to focus on its domestic and international business in its Contract, Automobile and Container divisions in future. Rhenus Air & Ocean is consolidating its position in Germany with the planned takeover of the freight forwarding business of the logistics company, BLG International Forwarding GmbH & Co KG. Rhenus is using the acquisition to tap into new business fields and is making its global network available to the BLG Group. Provided that the cartel authorities approve the development, Rhenus will acquire nine air and sea freight sites on 1 April 2021.

The nine freight forwarding sites operated by BLG International Forwarding with about 100 employees are due to be integrated within the existing network of Rhenus Air & Ocean in Germany, which currently has twelve branches, from the beginning of April onwards. They include business sites in Hamburg and Bremerhaven, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart as well as Munich. This will enable the company to handle greater volumes through its LCL gateway in Hilden and its air freight hub at Frankfurt, for example.

“We’ve gained a strong partner in Rhenus Air & Ocean and it’s making available its extensive network to our customers thanks to its global presence,” says Jens Wollesen, the Contract Board Member at BLG LOGISTICS. “BLG is strategically adapting to changes in market conditions through the sale of our freight forwarding business. Even if we’ll no longer be represented right across Germany in terms of freight forwarding in future, we’ll continue to provide extensive international services in our Contract, Automobile and Freight Container divisions.”

Thanks to the additional business sites, employees and business activities, we’re consolidating our network in the Air & Ocean division in Germany. The BLG freight forwarding site in Bremen, which focuses on overland traffic, transporting heavy goods, project business and sea freight, is excluded from the takeover.
